Special projects producing results at Naujaat school 'It was an excellent resource and the kids really got into it'

October was a busy month for special initiatives at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat, including one that focused on Canadian geography and another that focused on reading and literacy.

Vice-principal Julia MacPherson said a day dedicated to activities around a giant map of Canada provided by Canadian Geographic Education was a big hit with students.

"It was an excellent resource and the kids really got into it," she said.

MacPherson said the free resource offered to any class or school from kindergarten to Grade 12 came with curriculum-linked activities and supplies.

The activities were run by senior high social studies teacher Shona Stacey and the students in her class, she said.

"The map was set up in the gym for the day on Oct. 10, and it took up almost half the size of the gym floor," said MacPherson.

"Classes visited the map with their teacher and participated in various activities lead by Shona and her class.

"It was a major highlight of the month, which both students and teachers really enjoyed."

MacPherson said school staff came across the website highlighting the program this past year and applied to have it sent to Naujaat.

She said they received the OK from the organization this past August, and were even able to select the best time to have it sent to Tuugaalik.

"It came with all kinds of different lessons and activities the lead teacher could select for the students to work through, as well as different types of materials such as little pylons, chains and colour co-ordinated supplies.

"There were no labels on the map.

So one activity Shona selected was to label every community in Nunavut, which was really neat.

"Then there was an activity where they were going on a Ski-Doo trip, so they had to map out from point A to point B and then use the little chains to show the route they would go and

guess how far it would be.

Another activity had them going from one end of Canada to the other and figuring out what was in the exact middle. Some of the students were surprised to learn it was the Kivalliq community of Baker Lake.

MacPherson said she would really like to see other schools reach out to Canadian Geographic Education and obtain the project.

She said it's a simple process to obtain the giant map of Canada, and students really enjoy the experience and learn a great deal from it.

"We had it here for one day and did the activities, but we could have continued with it for a few more days.

Two days after the giant map of Canada, Tuugaalik held its annual Literacy Day activities on Oct. 12.

The event sees parents and guardians come to the school to hear readings from students, or do a little reading out loud themselves.

MacPherson said it's mostly the students who read to the adults, but they can switch back and forth if they like.

She said the senior school has

seven years now.

"As one school, of course, we were kindergarten to Grade 12 and, when we moved to Tuugaalik, we continued to incorporate it into our schedule, especially with our younger grades.

"The students read in both languages, and we have some really great programs now for guided reading in English and Inuktitut.

"So our students are working through those, as we're trying to incorporate a little bit more into the lessons while also getting that support so that they can work on increasing their reading, writing and comprehension levels.

"We've received some really great feedback and remarks from some of the students our learning coach, Bernadette O'Brien, works with – they have a real sense of pride with this and it's something they really want to work on and improve their skills, so we really support that."

MacPherson said there was a great turnout for this year's Literacy Day. She said emails were sent to the hamlet SAO and various other organizations in the community to remind them of the importance of parents or other guardians dropping in to read with one of the students on Literacy Day. "The community is great at assisting with Literacy Day. "In fact, it's something Aubrey (principal Bolt) and I have spoken with Bernadette (O'Brien) about – instead of just doing it once a year, we're going to try and do it at least once a month," she said.

Class act at fair

Baker Lake A Men's Fair was the scene of a touching act of family when Basil Tiktaalaaq presented the new Remington 783 bolt-action rifle with scope he had just won in a raffle draw to his brother, Peter Tiktaalaaq, as an anniversary gift in Baker Lake on Nov. 5.

The fair focused on healthy living for men 25 years of age and older.

Minister gets portfolios Kivalliq/Nunavut Patterk Netser of Coral Harbour was given the ministerial portfolios of the Nunavut Housing Corp. and Nunavut Arctic College by Premier Joe Savikataaq of Arviat on Nov. 8.

Netser was acclaimed as a cabinet minister in Nunavut's legislative assembly the previous week.

Netser replaces former minister Pat Angnakak, who resigned after Premier Savikataaq had stripped her of the two portfolios.

The move resulted in 13 MLAs passing a motion to censure (publicly reprimand) Premier Savikataaq and his cabinet for Angnakak's removal.

Rankin Inlet's Lorne Kusugak was the only minister to support the censure motion and vote against his own cabinet.

Christmas fundraiser Rankin Inlet There are only two days remaining to submit a funding proposal to the hamlet of Rankin Inlet for one of five donations totalling $45,000 to be made to non-profit organizations during the third Christmas Fundraiser on Dec. 1.

Proposals must be received by the hamlet by 3 p.m. on Nov. 16.

The fundraiser is co-sponsored by the hamlet and Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM).

The event will see the rewarding of four $10,000 donations and one $5,000 donation to fund a specific program or to help acquire a capital asset needed to run a program.

Proposals should include the organization's name and that of its executive members, along with contact information, and a description of what the funds will be used for, including a funding budget.

The proposal should also include any funding the organization is using to run its programs, as well as any funding contributed by other organizations.

The hamlet-AEM working committee will award the donations, which will be presented at the Christmas Fundraiser gala.

Sacrifice and Remembrance Rankin Legion playing growing role in region

The sense of community evident during the week of Remembrance Day was felt that much stronger in Rankin Inlet when Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 presented the RCMP with an $11,000 donation to its Kivalliq-wide Christmas Food Hamper on Nov. 9.

It was the biggest single donation the Rankin Legion has ever made, says longtime legion member and former branch president Darrin Nichol.

"It's no coincidence the donation was made just before Remembrance Day," he said. "It's a sign of our commitment to growing and supporting important initiatives like this in our region."

Nichol said it's important for the organization to maintain a high level of visibility when it comes to community involvement.

He said funding is tight and could be getting tighter for a number of organizations within Rankin and across the Kivalliq, and the branch executive feels the legion can play a role in helping to address numerous issues and causes that are before them.

"That's true for everything from supporting amateur sports teams to looking at the bigger picture of other important initiatives that are lacking in the Kivalliq, such as facilities for the elderly across the region," said Nichol. "We try to keep an open mind and look toward broader

issues as we move forward, and we look forward to being one part of many in trying to address these issues."

Nichol said making the donation to the food hamper just two days before Remembrance Day did make it feel a bit more special.

He said the Rankin Legion has a growing membership that wants the branch to be active and selective in terms of where it makes its donations, and the Christmas Food Hamper has always been a really important program to every Kivalliq community.

Nichol said the Rankin Legion isn't that unique insofar as a number of challenges it faces are also being faced by legion branches across the country.

He said Branch 169 was proud to represent Nunavut at this year's national legion convention in Winnipeg, Man. "In many cases, the Rankin Legion is at the forefront in terms of its operational growth and structure.

"We have a very young and diverse membership and, from our vantage point, a veteran is a veteran is a veteran, whether you're in the Canadian Rangers, the RCMP or you have past military service.

"That's an important component to it and, as a national organization, it's key to being committed to remembrance and honouring those who served, regardless of conflict, whether it was Cyprus, Afghanistan, Korea or the Second World War. "That's our solemn mission – what

we're committed to do – and we look forward to doing it for a long time into the future."

Funds will be split between communities The ceremonial cheque was presented

by Kelly Kaludjak on behalf of the legion and accepted by Sgt. Earl LeBlanc on behalf of the RCMP. Kaludjak said $5,000 of the money donated will stay in Rankin, with each of the other six Kivalliq communities receiving $1,000.

She said Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 enjoys giving back as much as it possibly can to the community throughout the year.

"We make a lot of donations throughout the year in response to the letters we receive asking for our help," said Kaludjak.

"We've helped everyone from the Deacon's Cupboard to various sports such as softball teams in the past year.

"It was nice to be able to make the donation so close to Remembrance Day, which is the biggest day of the year for the legion."

The artistry of creating art Students gather in Rankin Inlet for annual Kivalliq Art Camp

Concentration, creativity and beauty were all on full display when one entered the Kivalliq Art Camp in Rankin Inlet this past week.

The camp ran from Nov. 5 to 13, with a full showing of the students' work on display at the lab building next to the Learning Centre on Monday (Nov. 12) evening.

The annual camp is sponsored by the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) and was lead by instructors Rob Saley, Paul Mantrop and Andrew Qappik.

Saley said from an initial doodle to a finished work, artwork is a process with each part equally important.

"We actually encourage doodling," said Saley.

"Each student is given a sketchbook and, often, from those doodles come wonderful ideas which then can be translated into canvases.

"So the sketchbook and doodling are strongly encouraged."

Saley said the amount of talent he saw from the students during the camp was simply amazing.

He said the students were hard at work from day one

"We had an incredibly talented group of students – not only this year, but over the years we've been coming to this camp – and it's incredible to watch students develop from day one.

"At first, maybe you see they have a little bit of fear of tackling a canvas and paint.

But then you're watching that fear go away as they gain confidence with each canvas, and begin building on the experiences and what they've learned from the first canvas to the second and all the way through the camp.

"John (Tatty) was a little hesitant on day one – he wasn't sure about it – and by day five he was working on his sixth or seventh canvas.

"He was given a little, tiny bit of instruction and direction and he just ran with it, and that's incredibly rewarding as an instructor, to see skills learned and confidence gained, so we couldn't be happier as instructors at this camp."

Saley said the works produced at the camp resulted in stories being told and wonderful portraits being produced.

He said the instructors encourage the students to take on challenging projects and dissuade them from just doing an NHL logo or an ulu.

"If they're adamant they want to do that, we try to make it something more so they add a Northern flair to it or have some sort of personal story being told.

"That way they're not just doing a decorative piece, but

This year's camp featured mainly a mature group of students.

Saley said the camp being held in November, opposed to the summer months, meant many youth had school and other commitments.

But, he said, the camp did have a wide range of ages among its students and it was a pleasure to work with them all.

"We had five or six return students this year and we definitely saw improvements in their works.

"We've also become Facebook friends with many students over the years and, so,

I've seen work they've been posting and doing on their own time.

"That shows me they're inspired and motivated, and creating work when they're not at camp.

"We're here to help encourage them when they run into a problem or have a question and, really, to keep people from becoming frustrated is our main goal because a frustrated artist isn't having fun and that shows in their work."

Sam Tutanuak and Daisy Panika co-ordinated the camp for the KIA. Tutanuak said he decided to sit-in on the camp as well, as it was always something he wanted to give a try and broaden his horizons.

He said he enjoyed the

experience and getting a good idea of what producing art is all about.

"I haven't discovered my inner artist quite yet," said Tutanuak with a chuckle.

"I enjoyed doing the pencil-on-paper sketching through the week and following the lead of my late brother, Simon Tookoome, but I have a lot of following to do there.

"I had a lot of fun during the camp and, maybe it's a cliche, but I also found the experience to be therapeutic and quite relaxing.

"I really learned a lot, especially doing facials and stuff with portraits, and it's something now – doodling, at least – that I will definitely continue to do."

GN needs to get it together Northern News Services

Well, here we go again.

No matter how they felt about the manner in which it was handled, most Nunavummiut were hopeful those who head the Government of Nunavut (GN) would get back on the same page and start working together for the betterment of our territory when Arviat's Joe Savikataaq replaced Paul Quassa as premier.

That, however, seems to be far from the case.

And any hope of our Kivalliq representatives standing united for our region's betterment seems a lot more like wishful thinking now than it did in the glow of Savikataaq becoming Nunavut's first premier from the Kivalliq.

There may be just an inkling of sour grapes in Quassa's continued problems with the premier and his Sanikiluaq cabinet, but I prefer to give the man the benefit of the doubt on that point based on my personal impressions of him over the years and his impressive political resume.

But, make no mistake about it. Quassa saying he has difficulty believing Premier Savikataaq's explanation on the alleged double standard of his handling of two breaches of confidentiality that led to Pat Angnakak being stripped of her portfolios in Housing and Nunavut Arctic College, while Education Minister David Joanasie suffered no such fate when a similar breach

Construction budgets peaked in 2019 for AEM's next two Kivalliq gold mines at Meliadine (Rankin Inlet) and Amaruq (Baker Lake), with nearly $400 million (US) allocated to Meliadine and $175 million (US) to Amaruq.

It took the combined efforts of 6.5 sealift vessels to bring 132,000 cubic metres of cargo

by Agnico Eagle Kivalliq to Meliadine this past summer, including 50,000 cubic metres of construction materials, 30,000 cubic metres of concrete and 12,000 cubic metres of reagent (a substance used in chemical reactions).

Another 128,000 cubic metres of supplies were required at Meadowbank, including materials to advance Amaruq construction.

Work has been going year-round to prepare the future Amaruq and Meliadine gold mines for operations in 2019.

The grinding mill is seen inside the new processing plant at the Meliadine gold mine, 25 km north of Rankin Inlet. The mill is used to further break down ore into smaller pieces that can be sorted or processed.

Students learn the art of the bow 'Even some of the kids in the younger grades are pretty impressive at it'

Students are developing their archery skills thanks to a program being run by physical education teacher Gary Minaudo at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat.

Minaudo, who hails from the Windsor, Ont., area, said he has also spent time living in Arviat and Chesterfield Inlet, but Naujaat is the first chance he's had to teach high school physical education.

He said a bit of hunting back in Ontario represents his background in archery, and he only began teaching high school archery when he moved to Naujaat this past year.

"Archery seems to be pretty big in the North," said Minaudo.

"They had archery in the schools at Chester and Arviat when I was there, but I was never the phys-ed teacher when I was in those communities. So, I'm just trying to teach the Naujaat students a little bit about archery while trying to relate it to their culture, mainly through hunting, and the kids really love it."

Archery is taught to students from Grades 7 to 12 at Tuugaalik.

Minaudo said the students are very receptive to the instructions they receive and they've become quite good.

He said a number of them are naturals with the bow and arrow,

especially among the high school students who've been at it for the past few years.

"Even some of the kids in the younger grades are pretty impressive at it.

"It can be hard at first for some of them – getting the fingering right and learning the technique – but it can even be very difficult for some of our older staff members to get the technique down pat.

"So, overall, our kids are pretty impressive for how good they are.

"I don't know if archery is any easier for youth to learn, but maybe youth are just more receptive to a teacher teaching it to them."

Minaudo and his fellow staff members at Tuugaalik invited the staff members from Tusarvik School down for a little friendly competition on Oct. 18.

He said it was an overall competition, not school against school, and the best shots walked away with a few prizes.

"It was just kind of a team-building exercise with all the staff members," he said. "We set up a little tournament board and the first six places got a little prize. We shot some arrows, everybody had a really great time and nobody got punctured.

"I always teach safety as much as possible before anyone even touches a bow."
