The Nunavut Development Corp. (DevCorps) outlets of Ivalu Ltd. in Rankin Inlet and Jessie Oonark Centre in Baker Lake completed their second year of bringing their wares to the masses by spending afternoons at the Meliadine gold mine site near Rankin and the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker.

DevCorps manager of finance and administration Bernadette Tutanuak said Ivalu took a large number of items from its retail location in Rankin, including products purchased from the south but promoting Nunavut such as flags, shooters (shot glasses), mugs, licence plates and jewelry made by sister company Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts in Pangnirtung.

She said crafts taken included sealskin and beaver mitts, slippers from Taluq Designs in Taloyoak and carvings.

“The most popular items during both our trips to Meliadine were the shooters displaying the Nunavut flag,” said Tutanuak.

“The guys at the mine love their shooters,” she laughed, “but, at the same time, they bought pretty much anything with the Nunavut flag or colours on it.

“While most of what the non-Inuit workers bought were the lower end of our products, it’s no different than when we go down south and buy P.E.I. souvenirs or whatever.

“Some of them did purchase the sealskin and beaver mitts, as well as the Taluq Designs slippers. We’ve averaged about $7,000 in sales each trip, which is about four hours of actual sale time. ” DevCorps business adviser for cultural industry Goretti Kakuktinniq said Ivalu has found its soapstone carvings, various pieces of jewelry and hats made in Pangnirtung to also be quite popular on the trips.

She said each of the DevCorps subsidiary companies had an item popular with the Meliadine workers.

“Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) actually initiated this by contacting us to go up to Meliadine ahead of Christmas – we made two trips on Dec. 5 and 19 – to sell our products,” said Kakuktinniq.

“They also support us by buying whole collections of art for their higher-end executives, and we always see their southern employees at Ivalu a lot when they visit Rankin Inlet.

“AEM is very accommodating when we make our trips to the mine and it’s been very good to work with since day one.

“We need to get up to Meliadine more often, not just at Christmas, so hopefully we can work that out in the near future.”

Oonark Centre in Baker Lake said AEM treats them very well during their visit to Meadowbank, including making lots of food available through its cafeteria.

He said the staff are very nice and helpful, assigning people to look after them and take care of any needs they may have.

“We invite artists in the community to come on the trips with us and we had about half a dozen craftspeople come along to sell their sewing, drawings and prints on each of our two trips this past month,” said Ford.

“We do between $4,000 to $5,000 in sales each time we go and the artists also seem to do quite well.”

Ford said the centre does well with traditional-type clothing such as mitts at Meadowbank.

He said they decided to bring actual furs along during their two trips this year and they sold quite well.

“Most of our sales are to other Inuit from different communities who don’t have access to stores in their community that sell the types of products we do,” said Ford.

“We do a lot of community crafts such as the Pangnirtung-style hats and scarves, fur mitts and items of that nature.

“Basically, we bring up everything we have in our store but mostly what we sell are items made in our community.”

Ford said the Jessie Oonark Centre has also talked with AEM about visiting Meadowbank on a more regular basis, perhaps a few times a year instead of just at Christmas.

He said people at the mine are always asking for more visits, but time seems to pass too quickly on them and they still haven’t been able to arrange the extra visits.

“Lots of times, as well, when people are travelling between the community and Meadowbank, they come into the store with orders to bring back to people at the mine.

“There’s definitely room for the extra visits and, if we can both find the time to accommodate them, we’d love to do them for sure.”

Ford said the money made at Meadowbank represents a pretty good day’s worth of sales.

He said although they’re only there for four hours in the afternoon, the long haul out and back takes the entire day for one trip.

“I’m not sure what the sales we make at Meadowbank represent as a percentage of our sales, but it’s more than double or triple our sales on a regular day.

“The local craftspeople we take really appreciate the opportunity, as well.

“They can go in and put their own price on their wares and, from what I see, the artists who make the trip to Meadowbank with us do quite well.

Heavy-equipment operators were put to the test when a three-day blizzard pounded Rankin Inlet this past week.

Freezing blizzard

Rankin Inlet Residents of Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove, Chesterfield Inlet and Baker Lake had the worst of both weather worlds when a heavy blizzard and extreme cold temperatures rocked most of the Kivalliq region for three days this past week.

Schools were closed along with municipal and territorial government offices until mid-week, with residents of Rankin Inlet being asked to stay off of the roads with their vehicles for an extra day to allow the hamlet's heavy-equipment operators to clear the large amount of snow that came down in the storm.

At the same time, extreme-cold warnings were the norm the entire week as temperatures hovered consistently in the mid -50's C with the windchill, and often dropped below -60C. The extreme conditions caused havoc most of the week in Rankin, with the extreme cold temperatures remaining steady until this past Sunday, Jan. 20.

Dart challenge Rankin Inlet The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 will be hosting a one-day dart challenge to select four players to travel to Nova Scotia to represent Rankin (Nunavut) at a major darts challenge.

The Rankin challenge will be held this Saturday, Jan. 26, at Branch 169, with the first dart scheduled to be flung at 3 p.m.

The contest is open to all darts players in Rankin with an entrance fee of $20.

Game on Arviat Ten teams will be taking to the ice to compete in the annual JLM Calm Air Cup senior's men's hockey championship in Arviat from Jan. 24 to 27.

The Rankin A team will be competing with five other squads in the A Division. The Rankin players will be looking to increase their championship run to three straight at the JLM. The hamlet of Arviat has also announced minor hockey teams from across the territory will be travelling to the community when it hosts the annual Nunavut Territorial Bantam Championship from March 15-19.

Activity day Arviat A special day of activities on Saturday, Jan. 26, has been scheduled to coincide with the large number of people in the community to attend the JLM senior men's hockey tournament this coming weekend in Arviat.

A special penny sale and bake sale will be held at the Mark Kalluak Community Hall from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., while a musical showcase featuring a strong lineup of local musicians will then take centre stage at the hall from 5 to 9 p.m.

The final event of the day is reserved for the majority of youth in the community as the hamlet hosts a teenage dance from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Health care staffing crisis Overworked, understaffed nursing affecting health-care delivery in Kivalliq, Nunavut

There is no magic bullet to solve the problem of nursing shortages in communities across Nunavut, said Arviat North - Whale Cove MLA John Main last week in Arviat.

Main, speaking to Arviat nurses being terribly overworked due to a shortage of staff and a nasty flu bug on the go, said the staffing and capacity issues at the Arviat health centre are nothing new.

He said the shortage is concerning for local residents and in terms of how it can impact the workforce at the health centre.

“It’s extremely concerning to see that these capacity issues keep coming up, and it certainly doesn’t help for healthcentre staff to have to go and work in an environment like that every day,” said Main.

Nunavut communities are not alone in their effort to recruit more nurses.

Communities across Canada have recruitment teams put together to focus on having incentive packages appealing enough to recruit and retain doctors and nurses.

Main said Nunavut has to realize it’s not the only province or territory looking for medical professionals, and it has to find ways to compete with the packages being offered by other locales.

He said Nunavut has to become number one in putting time and energy into its recruiting efforts.

“We have to hire people who want to be here and who are a good fit for the reality of life in Nunavut.

“Once people get on the ground here in our communities, we need to make sure we have everything in place that’s needed to retain them, and that goes to making sure they’re not overworked, making sure they’re made to feel welcome and that their housing is adequate.

“There’s been some talk of opening up job sharing for people who are semiretired so, from my perspective, there is a lot that can be done in terms of further developing our workforce.

“Retention is a huge issue and the Department of Health can’t solve it on its own. It has to be a larger, multi-pronged initiative that involves community members and different agencies such as those tasked with providing housing.”

Main said the staffing issues are

impacting health-care delivery on an ongoing basis.

He said people across Nunavut are feeling a huge amount of frustration over health care right now, and that’s particularly true in his constituencies of Arviat and Whale Cove.

“We don’t want to see people suffering because we can’t solve these staffing issues.

“We don’t want to see elders and infants – the most vulnerable members of our society – going without proper health-care delivery.

“We need to really focus on moving the dial on this problem in a good direction and the vision I have, for the next few years going forward, is if we can make a dent in this and get things going in the right direction, then it will become easier to keep it that way.

“Right now we’re in this downward cycle where nurses being overworked and not having great working conditions impacts our recruitment and retention, so it’s a huge issue for Arviat, Whale Cove and communities across Nunavut.”

Main said recruiting nurses and other medical professionals from within has to be part of the solution to the problem.

He said Nunavut has to invest more into developing its workforce and that has to include opportunities for Inuit to receive the training in their own communities.

“I’m not sure if a nursing degree has ever been offered in a Nunavut community other than Iqaluit but, when it comes to teaching positions, for example, it’s being done regularly now across Nunavut where degree programs are offered in the community.

“Nursing is a four-year program and if it’s offered closer to home – especially for Inuit with families – that can make a big difference when you’re trying to catch up on your workforce development.

“There’s no magic bullet for this problem because it’s such a multi-pronged and complex issue that we’ve been battling for such a long time.”

Main points to a tuberculosis-screening initiative a few months back in Whale Cove as an example of an initiative where resources were committed to a project which will have a lasting positive impact on the health of the people living in that community.

Fixing the health care system, in baby steps Northern News Services

Arviat North – Whale Cove MLA John Main is bang on when he states small steps taken today to help cure the continual nursing shortage in Nunavut will lead to much bigger steps forward in the future.

He's also right when he says there's no one magic-bullet answer to solving the capacity issue, and longterm solutions can only be found with a multi-prong approach.

Sounds simple enough, but the competition for health professionals across Canada is the toughest it's ever been, and provinces and territories have to be able to put a sweet package on the table to recruit new doctors and nurses to their locals.

In many areas, Nunavut can't comSanikiluaq pete with provinces offering warmer communities, climate-wise, and all the amenities southern Canada has to offer, and there are plenty in this great nation of ours.

But where Nunavut can compete and should be focusing all of its attention, is getting the young professionals while they're still finishing their degrees and setting them up to be debt-free in a relatively short period of time when they enter the working world.

I know an engaged couple down south, both doctors, who accepted a sweet deal in Ontario that will have them on the positive side of the financial ledger in an impressively short period of time.

The couple agreed to begin their practices in First Nations communities for a set period of time, in exchange for having their student loans paid by the government while they're earning handsome doctor salaries to begin their careers.

Dustin Issaluk works sewing the cover to one of the new qajaqs.

Senior high students came together to put the finishing touches on a new group of boats for the qajaqing program at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet earlier this month.

The qajaq program at VSS is in excellent shape now thanks to the infusion of funds provided by the Arctic Inspiration Prize this past year.
