It's been a trying path from sickness to success for John Arnalukjuak High School Grade 9 student Chasity St. John in Arviat.

But, for the 14-year-old, the sickness is long in the past and the focus is on the here and now, and that means wrestling.

The young athlete only began amateur wrestling this past October, and her 1-1 record at the Jan. 27 territorial in Pangnirtung earned her a gold medal in the female 74-kilogram weight class at the event.

St. John said her role model is Arviat's Sylvia Kablutsiak, a former Team Nunavut wrestler, and she got interested in the sport because of her.

She said it seemed like fun, so she decided to give it a try.

"I really liked wrestling

when I began and the more I liked it the more I got into it," said St. John.

"I learned a lot of new moves quickly and they were all like new experiences for me.

"I've got good strength and pretty fast reflexes, and I think they've helped me progress a bit more quickly.

"I learn fast, I'm kind of aggressive, and I like to take the action to my opponent."

St. John said she didn't expect to be leaving the territorial with a medal when she was on her way to Pangnirtung.

She said she knew her competitors had far more experience, she was really nervous waiting to begin and, at first, she didn't think she would win a single match.

"I was in my first year of wrestling and didn't really have a coach except for the help Sylvia (Kablutsiak) and Natalie Baker were giving me, so I wasn't that confident to begin with.

"Once I started wrestling though – like in my very first match – I really started thinking I had a chance.

"I wrestled one opponent who was a bit lighter than I am and one opponent who was a bit heavier than me.

"I tried to be more aggressive against my heavier opponent and be a little bit faster as I tried to get inside control, but it was all a great learning experience for me."

St. John is looking forward to going for more training with Team Nunavut and coach Chris Crooks in Cambridge Bay, and said she's really excited about the upcoming 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, Alta., from Aug. 9-18.

The Games will feature athletes from Nunavut, the NWT, the Yukon, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Without the benefit of a full-time coach in Arviat, St. John said she helps keep herself focused by talking to her parents and the two former wrestlers she works with.

"I believe in myself and I'm looking forward to improving with more training.

"I'm kind of a competitive person and I really enjoyed the competition at the territorial. It was a lot of fun.

"This is my first time to really play a sport and I'm enjoying it.

"I'm really excited about my first trip to Cambridge Bay and I'm looking forward to learning more and seeing my teammates again."

St. John's mom, Nataasha Komakjuak, also made the trip to Pangnirtung and said she never would have thought her daughter would become a wrestler.

All-star goalie James Merritt will be in tough facing the first place A&K in one playoff semifinal of the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League underway this week in Rankin.

Playoffs underway Rankin Inlet Semifinal playoff action in the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League is underway this week with (first place) A&K taking on (fourth place) Kativik in one semi, and (second place) M&T battling (third place) KIA in the other.

Both series are best-of-five affairs.

Truck woes Rankin Inlet The hamlet of Rankin Inlet was without the service of its two sewer trucks for a few days this past month, when both vehicles succumbed to mechanical issues caused by the run of extremely cold temperatures to deep freeze the community during the past few weeks.

Mayor gets probation Baker Lake Baker Lake Mayor Shawn Attungala, 44, received his sentence of 12-months probation when the circuit court visited Baker Lake this past month.

Attungala had pleaded guilty to a single charge of assault the previous month on Dec. 4.

The charge of assault was laid in connection to a domestic dispute that took place in the community on Sept. 8, 2018.

Attungala was granted a conditional discharge during the proceedings, and will have no criminal record upon the expiration of his probationary period.

Nuts and bolts Rankin Inlet The Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council in partnership with JL Repair will be hosting a 10-day workshop on smallengine repair Monday, Feb. 18 to Friday, March 1, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The course will be based on a supportive learning environment with lots of hands-on experience.

The workshop is being funded by the Department of Family Services.

Ilitaqsiniq will also be hosting a managing motherhood meal preparation cooking class from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14.

The cooking class has daytime and evening sessions, with the daytime sessions (Intake 1) running from 1 to 4 p.m., and the evening sessions (Intake 2) running from 6 to 9 p.m. each day.

The program is being funded by the Department of Health's Community Wellness.

Author event Rankin Inlet The Kivalliq Visitor Centre will be hosting a Rankin author event this coming Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The centre has scheduled authors Susan Aglukark, Germaine Arnaktauyok, Aviaq Johnston, Nadia Sammurtok and Suzie Napayok-Short for the event.

Arviat squads strike gold Hometown teams claim A and B Division titles at JLM Calm Air Cup senior men’s event

Arctic Connection dropped Team Kivalliq 5-2 to claim the Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) Calm Air Cup A Division senior men’s hockey championship in Arviat Jan. 27.

An upstart squad of young guns from Whale Cove defeated the Karetakers 4-3 to claim bronze on the strength of Darryl Adjuk’s unassisted marker in the first overtime period.

The Karetakers had fought their way back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game with less than five minutes remaining in the third period.

The Arviat Kings demolished the Rankin B Team by a score of 8-0 to become the first JLM Calm Air Cup B Division champs.

The Kings will join the A Division pool in 2020 with Baker Lake moving to the B Division.

Tourney organizer and Arctic Connection captain Gleason Uppahuak said he couldn’t be happier with how the tournament ran and, of course, the hometown Connection’s first JLM Calm Air Cup championship in three years.

Rankin Inlet were two-timedefending champs coming into the event.

Uppahuak said with each year the Arviat fans get more vocal and the attendance for each game gets higher.

He said the atmosphere in the Arviat arena for this year’s A Division and B Division championship games was just incredible.

"There are some games when the fans might not like this or that, but that’s just hockey," said Gleason.

"There were a lot of smiling faces in our arena on the final night of the JLM with an Arviat team claiming both banners."

Uppahuak said, overall, the players bought into the new format of having both A and B Division championships.

He said the excitement among the players and fans grew as the tournament progressed.

"After seeing the games going along,

I think the majority of players finally bought into the new format.

"Change is never easy and there will always be those who are against change of any kind, really.

"Everyone was surprised the defending champs went through the tournament without winning a game."

All reports out of Arviat during the Jan. 24 to 28 event indicated that the level of play in the A Division was fastpaced and intense.

Many of the games were completely sold out and the arena was filled to capacity during the games on playoff Sunday.

Uppahuak said the Arviat Kings showed a good combination of speed and skill during the event and he’s confident the B Division champs will be competitive in the A Division their next time out.

He said many players in the tourney were impressed with what they saw from a young Whale Cove Whalers team.

"This group of players from Whale Cove are very, very fast and they’re going to be a real force to be reckoned with in a few years if they can keep the team together," he said.

"They never seem to run out of gas out there, and they look like they’ll be a top-four threat in any tournament for a number of years.

"This Whale team has speed, skill and solid goaltending, so we may see them claim a big championship in the near future or, at least, be skating out to play for gold in the final."

Uppahuak said it was a big relief for an incredibly happy group of Arctic Connection players to break their championship drought, especially on home ice.

He said they were pumped and wellprepared for every game on their way to a perfect 4-0 record in claiming the 2019 banner.

"We signed two players from the Karetakers this year – Robert and Nap Karetak – and they were huge additions to our team.

"Robert’s play on defense and Nap’s skill and speed up front gave our team a big boost.

"They were the two missing pieces to our championship puzzle this year.

"As a team we played very positional hockey every game to shut down the other team’s ability to break out smoothly and, once we got the puck, we attacked and attacked and attacked again."

The JLM Calm Air Cup senior men’s championship has evolved into a true community event, with a number of community activities held during the tourney and a minor hockey skills-development camp being hosted for three days following the JLM. Uppahuak said there were plenty of happy moms, dads and young players following this year’s camp.

He said every kid in minor hockey had a blast and further developed their skills under the instruction of Scott Forcand, who also happens to be the Connection’s goaltender.

"Arviat benefits in many ways from the JLM Calm Air Cup and the community plays a big role in helping it grow and improve.

"On Saturday, Jan. 26, we hosted a big penny sale for everyone during the day and, that evening, we worked together with the Inummariit music group to put on an event featuring local talent, which helped make for a very successful weekend.

"I can’t say enough to thank our sponsors – Calm Air, Arctic Connection, Eskimo Point Lumber Supply, the Northern store, our local Padlei Co-op and Keystone Source for Sports in Selkirk, Man. – because without them, none of this would be possible.

Information sessions Baker Lake/Arviat The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) will be hosting a community information session in Baker Lake for the assessment of the Agnico Eagle Mines expansion proposal for its approved Whale Tail Pit project.

The information session will be held at the community hall on Feb. 18, beginning at 7 p.m.

The focus of the session is to discuss the proposal and the process for the reconsideration of the terms and conditions of the Whale Tail Pit project certificate.

NIRB will also be hosting a similar information session in Arviat on Feb. 16 at the Arviat Recreation Centre beginning at 7 p.m.

I can't say I've gotten to know a lot of people well in the community of Baker Lake, but I've gotten to know more than a handful very well during the past two decades.

And, like pretty much everyone else, I tend to take an interest in any community where people who I care about live.

That's why a shiver passed through me when I first heard the news of a big fire in the community in the early morning of Jan. 29.

And, although the community faced the loss of equipment and significant challenges, especially with the frigid temperatures in the region, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I learned there were no injuries sustained due to the fire.

I'll always go with the notion that Sanikiluaq equipment can be replaced, while lives cannot.

Having dedicated a lot of ink to the efforts of our local fire department over the years, I've spent a lot of time listening to extremely knowledgeable fire chiefs and program instructors – and I know the risks that come with battling any fire, let alone a major blaze in extreme temperatures.

So, yes, I was worried about the Baker firefighters battling that blaze in those conditions.

But, more than anything else – much more than anything else – I worried about the community itself, which has been taking one major blow after another for the past few months.

And, although listening to SAO Sheldon Dorey talk about the sense of community that is more than a little palpable in Baker Lake lifted my spirits, this is a community that has suf-

Rankin U16 girls volleyball team to compete in Alberta championship

A number of factors came together that ultimately led to the Rankin Royals girls' U16 volleyball team being set to compete at one of the premier tournaments in western Canada.

The Royals will be off to give it their all at Volleyball Alberta's Premier Number One North U16 girls provincial championship showdown on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24.

The draws for the tourney are usually posted about two weeks before the event, so the Royals should know this week or next what teams they'll be competing against and in what venue.

The Royals have been coached

by Robert Kabvitok said Holly Mercer for the past five years.

Kabvitok said bad luck and bad timing conspired earlier in the season to have the Royals miss one annual tournament they always attend and be too late to register for another long-promised event.

He said he and Mercer were determined to find a tournament for the Royals to participate in, and they didn't give up until the Royals were registered to compete in the Premier event in Alberta.

"We usually go to the December tournament in Yellowknife, but our flight flew over this year and

left us all pretty disappointed," said Kabvitok.

"It was hard for Holly and I to see the girls like that at the airport when they realized we wouldn't be going.

"We always said we'd take them to Winnipeg, but, when I tried to register us there, the organizer told me it had been full since November, so I was way too late for that and we just had to keep looking.

"When I finally got to tell the girls we were going to the tournament in Alberta this past month, they were pretty excited."

Kabvitok said he has absolutely no idea of the level of competition that awaits the Rankin team.

He said even, for all intents and purposes, entering a tournament blind to the level of talent they'll be facing, he has confidence in the 'game' the Rankin girls bring to the court.

"You know, we have some girls who went to high-performance events like the NAIG (North American Indigenous Games) and, hopefully, their experience will help us if the tournament does turn out to be the caliber of a top-tier event.

"That's kind of what I'm expecting, even though I have no clue as to the talent that awaits us."

Making the trip for the U16 Royals are Shanti Dias, Kailee Karlik, Amber Graham, Parker Faulk-

ner, Tati Connelly-Clark, Sanisha Nakoolak, Alyson Mckay and Elinor Mercer.

Shawna Dias will be accompanying the team as a chaperone to give Kabvitok and Mercer a little help on the trip.

Like every sport in Nunavut, due to the high cost of flying, travel is often dictated by the amount of money a team can raise.

Kabvitok said he and Mercer try to take the Royals to at least two tournaments every year.

He said he's still not sure exactly how much the Alberta trip will cost, but he and Mercer are already drawing the purse strings tight.

"We have to save some money to attend the Nunavut territorials in Iqaluit this coming May," said Kabvitok.

"We do all our own fundraising, usually by holding two major events – a bingo and one very large penny sale.

"We also get fundraising help from Shawna (Dias) through her awesome seamstress skills. She used to always donate a couple of parkas when we were doing penny sales and they're always very popular.

"Holly's awesome at managing our funds and, one way or another, we always seem to come up with just enough money to get the girls to a couple of tournaments every year."

The efforts of the people of Baker Lake in banding together to help negate the effects of a blaze that ripped through a municipal garage during the early morning hours of Jan. 29 show the strong sense of community spirit the hamlet is known for.

The blaze destroyed the hamlet's fleet of six sewage trucks, a garbage truck, two front-end loaders and a D6 CAT bulldozer.

Two local firefighters were taken to the health centre to be examined after fighting the blaze, but there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.

Senior administrative officer (SAO) Sheldon Dorey said the community has been great in helping to deal with the situation.

He said the hamlet office hasn't been inundated with calls for service or complaints and, as far as he's concerned, the community has been wonderful during a trying period.

"We had seven sewage trucks in town and we've been

crippling along using one truck that is still not functioning 100 per cent since the incident happened," said Dorey.

"Agnico Eagle Mines has been helping out by sending a small truck it was using at the mine for a couple of days at a time, and we've been running as many hours as we possibly can with the two trucks.

"Although we really had no issues with water, we had to issue a conserve-water advisory because if people are using their water then they're filling up their sewage tanks and their water will shut off.

"We don't want everyone in town with full sewage tanks because, if they're not exercised on a regular basis when full, they're going to freeze."

Dorey said this past Thursday, Jan. 31, the hamlet pretty much had the major crisis behind it, and was working with the Government of Nunavut (GN) and Hay River Ford in the NWT to get new sewage trucks into town.

The SAO said thanks to a couple of communities agreeing to take delivery of their trucks on a different date, the hamlet has secured two full

sewage trucks from Hay River Ford, as well as another complete chassis.

"We have an old tank here we're going to put onto that chassis when it arrives in town.

"That will give us four functioning trucks, which will bring us to a point where we're almost right back to full service.

"All we'll have to do is amend our schedule a little bit until sea-lift, which is in September, and that's not a big issue.

"We should be back to normal on Feb. 7 or Feb. 8."

Dorey said the garbage truck the hamlet lost in the blaze was the newer 2013 model, so the municipality has the old garbage truck upand-running again to provide services.

He said the hamlet only has one front-end loader remaining in its fleet but, if push comes to shove, there's two or three contractors in town it can contract services for, or lease from.

"The final figure for the total loss in damages hasn't been determined yet, but I would imagine it will probably be between $4 million and $5

million.

"That would be a ball-park guess on my part, and I'm only guessing at this point to give Kivalliq News a number.

"I have no indication as to what might have caused the fire, as the fire marshal has yet to determine that."

Dorey said the hamlet has been in constant communication with the GN in Iqaluit, and it let the Rankin Inlet office of Community and Government Services (CGS) know right away.

He said the hamlet of Baker Lake gets along well with the CGS staff in Rankin, and the procurement department in Iqaluit started looking to help procure vehicles for Baker on the morning of the fire.

"They did identify some vehicles down south, but they weren't a good fit for our community, and they also helped us identify aircraft to bring in the vehicles.

"Our three sewage vehicles were scheduled to be driven to Yellowknife from Hay River on Feb. 3, then flown by Hercules on Feb. 4 or Feb. 5 to the Meadowbank gold mine for us to drive into town.

"So, hopefully, weather permitting and all the gods smiling, we should be back to full service by the end of this week."

Baker has had more than its share of challenges during the past few years.

Dorey said although he's fairly new to the community – he's the type of individual who becomes a part of the community he moves to – he does sense a significant sense of community in Baker.

He said the people of the community have been great with their tolerance and patience during this ordeal, and they've co-operated every way they can.

"We put out an advisory and people are conserving their water, and we put out an

advisory on using their honey buckets like they used to years ago and they call to let us know.

"Everyone's been fabulous and even though all the other sad stuff is happening – suicides and such – there's a real strong sense of community here and, when something bad happens, the community comes together and we couldn't ask for anything more.

"Pretty much every corporate citizen in Baker Lake called to ask what they could do to assist, and we've utilized their equipment, staff and airport.

"There's a lot of darkness that could have happened during all this, but it didn't and that's a credit to the community."

Grade 9 student Chasity St. John of John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat has progressed rapidly since taking up amateur wrestling this past October.

of the sickness she went through about five or six years ago.

"We were down in Winnipeg with her and she wasn't able to walk for a whole month," said Nataasha.

"Later, when she would ask to play hockey or be on the soccer team, her dad kept telling her no because he was worried that she wouldn't be able to stand the physical strain.

"When they announced here at the high school that any students interested in attending wrestling practice were welcome, Chasity asked me for permission and I told her to go ahead but to make sure she didn't tell her dad.

"We kept it to ourselves for about two weeks and, when I told my husband, he got all worried and freaked out about it, but now she's going to the Western Canada Summer Games."

Nataasha agrees her daughter has really beaten the odds in becoming a wrestler, especially with how fast she's

improved.

She said the family is very thankful to Kablutsiak and Baker for all the help they've given her daughter, as well as the after-school fitness training she's received from teacher Jill MacKenzie and coaching tips from Andrew Faucet.

"Chasity is fairly driven and she always gives it 100 per cent when she tries anything new.

"She was always active after her sickness, but she didn't really think about sports that much until she got into the middle school and starting thinking of playing soccer, but her dad was too worried that she might injure herself.

"She started high school just this past August of 2018 and there were a lot of new opportunities in front of her.

"And, of course, I was very proud of Chasity – that's my daughter – and how she performed in Pangnirtung.

Now she practices at home a bit with her dad and he supports her wrestling 100 per cent."
