Paliak-Angootealuk said the graduates really enjoyed making their sealskin jackets, and they were all very proud of their accomplishment.

She said, like herself, many will probably always live their lives in the North, and they will need to learn traditional skills such as sewing warm clothes to help them endure the bitter cold.

“This will help them in the future, when some of them will make families of their own up here.

“They will need to know how to do things on their own, and this project will definitely give them ideas as to how they can do that.

“I feel I have done my part to help get these ladies ready for their future!”

Students from both schools in the community hit the road in order to raise money for cancer research during the annual Terry Fox Run in Naujaat on Sept. 7.

Keeping the spirit alive Naujaat/Chesterfield Inlet Students at Tusarvik Elementary School and Tuugaalik High School combined to raise more than $1,500 for cancer research during the annual Terry Fox Run in Naujaat on Sept. 7.

The Naujaat run was organized by Tuugaalik High School physical education teacher Gary Minauda, and Tusarvik Elementary vice-principal Jolene Itkilik.

The students met at the elementary school shortly after lunch for a shotgun start, and then ran to Old Water Lake and back to the school.

Waiting for the students upon their arrival back at the school were a barbecue, juice refreshments, a bake sale and a 50/50 draw.

Meanwhile, students at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet held their annual Terry Fox Run this past Friday, Sept. 14.

The final tally on how much the Chester students managed to raise for cancer research was not available as of press time.

United for Life Baker Lake A special United for Life Summit 2018 was held this past week in Baker Lake from Sept. 11 to 13.

The event was hosted by the Hamlet of Baker Lake and Nunavut Suicide Prevention Strategy partners.

The gathering featured scheduled presentations by such personalities as Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami president Natan Obed, Embrace Life Council president David Lawson, Mianiqsijit chairperson Becky Kudloo, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Aluki Kotierk, the associate deputy minister of the Government of Nunavut’s Quality of Life Secretariat, Karen Kabloona, and Renee Linklater of the Canadian Association of Mental Health, among others.

A wide-ranging variety of workshops were also held, as well as group panel discussions and other activities.

Mayors meet Naujaat Mayors, senior administrative officers and numerous representatives from the private sector, including Calm Air president Gary Bell, and the Government of Nunavut, including Premier Joe Savikataaq of Arviat and Community and Government Services Minister Lorne Kusugak of Rankin Inlet, descended upon Naujaat for the region’s annual Kivalliq Mayor’s Meeting on Sept. 12 and 13.

Kivalliq Inuit Association president David Ningeongan was also slated to attend the gathering.

More than 40 students and teachers from across the Kivalliq hit the water in the name of science during the annual Kivalliq Science Educators Community (KSEC) Science Camp in Chesterfield Inlet from Sept. 6 to 10.

The theme of this year’s camp was Sanikiluaq qajaqing and, in addition to nine regional science teachers, the event attracted volunteer instructors such as longtime Kivalliq (award-winning) science teacher Katharine O’Connell (who took personal vacation time from her position in North Bay to attend) and Agnico Eagle Mines program instructor Katelyn Proulx.

KSEC vice-president and science camp co-ordinator Glen Brocklebank of Victor Sammurtok School in Chester said KSEC always tries to have the same theme for two consecutive camps.

He said the annual event is slated to move on to Baker Lake for 2019 and 2020.

“In addition to the qajaqing, our camp activities this year were first aid and learning the GPS (Global Positioning System),” said Brocklebank.

“The entire region was represented this year, and it was great to have Whale Cove back after missing the past three years.

“In reading through the student comments we have them leave with us every year, many of them were very nervous and afraid when they began the qajaqing portion of the program, but, by the end of the camp, they looked like they had been doing it for a lot more than four hours.

New festival would be win-win Northern News Services

Word on the street in Rankin Inlet has a group of folks coming together this past weekend in hopes of forming a committee to establish a second music festival in Rankin Inlet.

I write second out of courtesy to our Fire Chief Mark Wyatt and his band of merry fundraisers at the Rankin department, who host the annual Solfest event as a fundraiser for the local fire department and ambulance crew.

I have long marvelled at the overall musical talent in the Kivalliq, and another showcase for that talent in our region’s hub comes with a lot of potential upside.

Cost, of course, is the major deterrent to such an endeavour in our neck of the tundra. The committee members and the group of volunteers they’re able to attract to their noble cause will have a long year ahead on the road of fundraising and Sanikiluaq obtaining sponsorships.

I’ve followed along with the Arviat music festival for years, as best as one can from a distance, and came within a sour note or two of actually having the chance to attend it two or three years ago (the memory fades with age).

I was humbled and quite excited to receive the invitation from one Mr. John Main but, alas, when you’re dealing with four or five individuals – all with family, work and other commitments – things don’t always work out and it was not meant to be.

Staying healthy while pregnant Keeping away from alcohol eliminates threat of FASD

The Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project hosted a mocktail tasting table at the local Northern store to mark International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day in Baker Lake on Sept. 9.

The event was organized by the Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project under the direction of co-ordinator Laurel Kreuger, with funding provided by the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health (Community Wellness) and administered by the hamlet of Baker Lake.

Annie Anautalik and Kim Chipman served the tasty mocktails (non-alcoholic drinks) at the information table.

The mocktail-tasting table provided an opportunity for members of the Prenatal Nutrition Project to distribute information to expectant moms, and the general public, on the importance of pregnant women not drinking alcohol in order to prevent FASD. FASD is caused when a mother consumes alcohol during pregnancy.

Its symptoms include physical birth defects, developmental delays, learning disabilities and memory problems, To prevent it, women should not drink alcohol during pregnancy, said Kreuger.

“It’s important to raise aware-

ness of the issue and make sure everyone’s aware of it, especially pregnant women and people who are close to them, like their partners and family members, who can support them in their efforts to not drink alcohol during their pregnancy,” said Kreuger.

“There’s always interest in our projects and lots of people come by to enjoy the non-alcoholic mocktails we serve.

“We also hold a full event in February called a mocktail party with the same purpose.”

Kreuger said it’s hard to know just how many in any given community know, or don’t know, that FASD can be prevented.

She said awareness is pretty good in the community, but it’s such an important message that the Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project wants to always keep repeating it.

“With Sept. 9 being International FASD Awareness Day, we always do a bit more to get the message out around that date,” she said. “We had some posters up around the community that gave people brief information about FASD and how to prevent it.

“We also put together some small packages of non-alcoholic and nutritious drinks with information about FASD and preventing it, which we provided directly to pregnant women who we were coming in contact with leading up to Sept. 9."

Learning by land and by water Class trips play integral role in life, education at Naujaat’s Tuugaalik High School

Students and staff at Tuugaalik High School place a high value on the school’s annual landand-boat trips, which are part of the approach to the blending of culture and academic learning that Tuugaalik is well-known for.

Tuugaalik has held outings for at least four classes so far this semester, with cultural teacher Laimmiki Malliki being the lead planner behind the trips.

Principal Aubrey Bolt said there are a couple of factors that lead staff to view the trips as an important aspect of overall learning for the students.

He said as part of the Education Act, they’re bound to stress the eight principles of Inuit Quajimajatuqangit.

“One of those, of course, is custodian of the land, so we always emphasize the need to take care of the land as part of our trips,” said Bolt.

“They take care of all the garbage while out there. And the students harvest animals in an ethical manner, ensuring all the meat and skins are used.

“The trips also focus on respect and helping one-another as they learn how to pack for camping and boating, how to set up camp, and how to take it all down again to come home.

“They learn important land-and-survival skills they can use in their adult life, as well as how to to co-operate and work together.

“We strongly encourage that aspect in the school because, by learning from and helping each another, those who may have learning issues can be helped by some of the moregifted students. In turn, that stresses the need to include everybody, leaving nobody left out.”

Bolt said Tuugaalik melds education and culture together by consistently emphasizing the aspects and traditions of Inuit culture that help make school more meaningful to the students and encourages a rise in overall attendance.

He said students are more apt to come to school if they see it’s reflecting and emphasiz-

ing their culture.

“Just about 100 per cent of our students attend land trips because they see them as important and relevant, as well as highlighting the important aspects of Inuit culture that are different from southern culture.

“Also, during the trips, traditional orienteering and modern orienteering with compass and GPS are taught, as well as the proper mooring and handling of the boat.

“So there is certainly an additional emphasis placed on skill development during these trips.”

Bolt said there is also an element of selfconfidence built into the trips, giving Inuit students a chance to shine.

He said many students who are used to going out on the land with their families to camp, hunt and fish, are often able to help the teachers with their instruction.

“The students who are very familiar with the activities often take a leadership role in setting up camp, setting nets for fishing, etc.

“That builds confidence and increases selfesteem because they know skills that other students don’t, and sometimes even skills the teacher, particularly those from the south, doesn’t know much about.

“That aspect can be quite important because some students periodically see themselves as a leader within the group while out on the land, while, in the academic world, they might not be.”

Bolt said it’s also important for the students, at times, to see their teachers in a different environment than the classroom.

He said southern teachers, especially those from metropolitan areas, have little to no experience surviving on the land when they arrive in Naujaat.

“Often, the teacher is as much a student out on the land as a student is in the classroom, so students see them in a different light while out fishing, enjoying the land, and so on.

“In that case, a different rapport builds within the teacher-student relationship that you don’t often see in the classroom.

Tuugaalik High School learning coach and temporary Grade 8 teacher Bernadette O’Brien is all smiles while enjoying a trip on the land with her students in Naujaat on Sept. 6.

“Senior high students also earn some credits on land forms during the land trips (not boating trips), as well as a credit on survival skills and orienteering using compass and GPS. “They often build a qamutiik in the shop before they go out on the land, and there’s credits to be earned in the making and using of traditional Inuit tools such as an ulu or a harpoon for seal hunting.”

The trips have helped combine culture and academia at Tuugaalik High School, with every class going out on either a boating trip or a land trip in the late summer or early fall.

Bolt said students in Grades 7 and 8 go on the land fishing, while students in Grades 9 to

12 go on a boating trip.

He said boating trips can involve anything from fishing to whale hunting.

“A couple of our classes landed belugas this past year, and, once they accomplished that, they became involved in preparing the maktaaq and distributing it within the community.

“When the ice is on the ponds in early-tolate November all the classes go fishing, and, come spring, everybody is out on the land both hunting and fishing.

“It’s a vitally important-and continuous cycle defining much of everyday life in Naujaat, and we’re proud it plays such a vital cultural role in our school.”
