Terry Fox Run gets personal in Chester, legacy still burns bright in Naujaat

In yet another example of Kivalliq spirit and generosity, students at Tusarvik Elementary School and Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat and Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet, raised more than $3,000 for cancer research during their annual Terry Fox Run in the two communities.

The Naujaat students held their run on Sept. 7, while the Chester students ran on Sept. 14.

Both communities raised more than $1,500.

VSS teacher Glen Brocklebank said the Chester run was a little shorter this year due to bear sightings but the event still attracted about 110 runners, with students from kindergarten to Grade 12 taking part, as well as about 20 community members.

He said everyone enjoyed some

light chatter with their hotdogs and juice at the end of the run.

"The RCMP, our bylaw officer and our wildlife officer were on patrol during the run and three teachers were stationed at various points along the route," said Brocklebank.

"We raised $1,523.75, with Seporah Sammurtok our top fundraiser with $286.45."

Brocklebank said VSS makes the effort every year to keep its young students aware of who Terry Fox was and what he accomplished.

He said kids in Chester have bought-in totally to stickers distributed by the Terry Fox Foundation.

They can write the name of who they're dedicating the run to on the sticker (I'm Running For __) and then stick it on for the run.

"My dad died of cancer, so my kids put ‘grandpa' on theirs," said Brocklebank.

"A few people in town died from

cancer and some kids put their names on the stickers. And we have a lady undergoing cancer treatment, so her nieces and nephews all put they're running for Gloria on theirs.

"In terms of keeping the spirit of the Terry Fox Run going, the stickers have been fantastic and actually reading who the kids are running for can be emotional.

"We also have the Marcel Maktar Memorial square dance in November and a couple of the kids ran for Marcel's legacy because he also died of cancer."

Running for a cause in Naujaat The Naujaat run was organized

by Tuugaalik High School physical education teacher Gary Minauda and Tusarvik Elementary vice-principal Jolene Itkilik.

The Naujaat students met at Tusarvik shortly after lunch on Sept. 7 for a shotgun start and then ran to Old

Water Lake and back to the school.

Waiting for the students upon their arrival back at the school were a barbecue, juice refreshments, a bake sale and a 50/50 draw.

Tuugaalik vice-principal Julia MacPherson said Minauda and Itkilik worked together to plan a great event and it was nice to have all the kids together from both schools for the run.

She said Fox still remains quite popular among Naujaat students and Tuugaalik makes a concerted effort every year to reinforce that dedication to his legacy.

"We have resources on our communal drive of Terry Fox and his videos, the new heritage moment commercial, newspaper articles and other things of that nature," said MacPherson.

The teachers spoke to the students about Fox's legacy in the weeks leading up to the event. Many of them

gathered in the gym on the morning of the run for a presentation, she said.

"It's always interesting because we get a lot of questions from the students," said MacPherson. "They still ask why couldn't the doctors fix Terry Fox? Why did they have to give him that leg? He's definitely a hero to a lot of the kids and they take Terry Fox Day very seriously."

MacPherson said school secretary Abby Haqpi has a son in Grade 1 named Lucas who came home the day of the run to ask her what had happened to Fox. "That had Abby very emotional.

She asked me for some resources to bring home to Lucas that might help explain things to him," she said.

"That's a small example of the impact Terry Fox can have. He's so young when they show him in a video or some of the other resources about him. Our youths kind of relate to him on that level."

Cadet corps gets reprieve Naujaat The multi-award-winning 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Naujaat may yet find itself back on its feet.

Hamlet senior administration officer Rob Hedley said cadet Capt. Erin McKinlay travelled to Naujaat from Winnipeg earlier this month to try to breathe life into the corps and recruit an instructor to keep the corps afloat for the current year.

And it looks like she may have accomplished her mission.

"The week here was spent trying to get everything organized and they held one night of signing-up cadets for this year and they had 26 sign up right away that night," said Hedley.

"So, we figure we'll likely have about 46 signed by the time we're done.

"We have a local civilian instructor we're looking at in Romeo Kopak and he seems to be totally committed to keep 3055 RCACC going.

"It's looking up again for the corps and the hamlet couldn't be happier about that."

Run for the Cure Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet branch of the CIBC is slated to join its sister branches across the country in hosting a Run for the Cure on Sunday, Sept. 30.

The CIBC Run for the Cure is a 5-km or 1-km walk or run that raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Run for the Cure is the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in Canada in support of the fight against breast cancer.

Puck time Rankin Inlet Rankin Inlet recreation co-ordinator and minor hockey coach David Clark has announced that his Arctic Inspiration Prize-winning Rankin Rock Hockey camp will be running in Rankin Inlet from Oct. 13 to 19.

The Rankin Rock Hockey Camp promotes itself as developing youth leadership capacity in communities by giving youth a hands-on experiential learning opportunity as coaches and leaders of a hockey camp.

The hockey camp took home $80,000 from the Arctic Inspiration Prize earlier this year to foster the development of young role models and promote healthy, active lifestyles.

In other Rankin hockey news, a hockey equipment giveout will take place at Rankin's community hall on Oct. 12, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The regular minor hockey season will get underway in Rankin on Oct. 24.

Winnipeg vets treat 85 animals in Rankin Most threats to furry family members nullified by vaccines

A three-person team from the Winnipeg-based Tuxedo Animal Hospital made the journey to conduct the annual veterinary pet clinic in Rankin Inlet from Sept.

18 to 22.

The health team consisted of veterinarian Dr. Jonas Watson and registered veterinary technicians Jenn Dakin and Erin Dack.

The clinic was organized by Page Burt and John Hickes of Nanuq Lodge.

Animal health-care professionals from the Tuxedo Animal Hospital have been travelling to Rankin to deliver the clinic for the past 18 years.

"It's a very satisfying feeling to be delivering our services to people and pets in parts of the country where we're needed the most," said Watson. "From an animalwelfare perspective, making veterinary medicine accessible to remote communities like Rankin Inlet is very important."

The health team attended to about 85 animals during the visit, with about half their furry patients being seen for spayand-neuter surgeries and half for wellness exams and vaccine administration.

Watson said access to regular veterinary visits has probably improved overall animal health and welfare in Rankin Inlet during the past 18 years.

He said there's still room for improvement with pet spaying and neutering in Rankin, with the visiting team doing about the same number of surgeries each year.

"There are probably populations – and pet owners – we're never quite getting to

that are still contributing to dog overpopulation in the community," said Watson.

There are many health benefits to an individual animal that has been spayed or neutered, he said.

Spaying a female dog eliminates the risk of deadly uterine infections and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancers, he said.

In a male dog, neutering helps prevent testicular cancers, prostatic disease and some anal gland problems. It also reduces certain undesirable testosterone-fuelled behaviours.

Cases of distemper and rabies in wildlife have been identified in and around the Rankin area over the years, which means it's important to vaccinate pets in the Kivalliq.

Watson said the first indications of the virus expressing itself in a beloved family pet may include neurological signs – seizures, dullness and aggression – and other behavioural changes.

He said it's quite possible for an owner not to notice the symptoms until their animal becomes aggressive.

"The onset can be insidious, but sometimes an owner will know the animal has had an interaction with a wild animal such as a fox.

"If that has happened, you want to make sure your dog is revaccinated to decrease the likelihood of it getting infected. These diseases are entirely preventable through vaccination," he said.

During a routine exam, an animal health-care professional looks for a lean body condition, clean teeth, a healthy, shiny coat and the absence of any sign of skin, ear or eye infections.

When it comes to ‘treats' and how many are enough to harm your pet with kindness, going by the recommendations on your dog or cat's pet-food bag is a useful guideline, said Watson.

"Then it's about feeding according to body condition, such that you can easily feel their ribs over their chest when you run your hands over their body.

"And, when you look at them from the side, they should have an obvious abdominal tuck inwards.

"We recommend annual examinations because they allow the veterinarian to detect things a pet owner may not be able to appreciate.

Watson said most of the contagious diseases a dog is going to encounter in Rankin Inlet are preventable with vaccinations while some infectious diseases, such as worms, can also be prevented by regular deworming protocols.

"Most problems we see related to infectious diseases are preventable ones.

"When we see a bout of kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) flare up in the south, it usually lasts a couple of months, so, conceivably, something like that could make its way up here, but it's not that serious.

Overall, the pet population in Rankin is doing pretty well, he said, but an emerging infectious disease they've been watching for is canine flu.

Kivalliq Mayors Forum in Naujaat More government ministers attend than any previous forum, says Arviat Mayor Bob Leonard

The 2018 Kivalliq Mayors Forum is being hailed as a success due to the levels of communication, participation and co-operation evident throughout the gathering in Naujaat from Sept. 11 to 13.

This year's affair not only had Premier Joe Savikataaq present; it had more Government of Nunavut (GN) ministers attend than any previous forum, said Arviat Mayor Bob Leonard.

The first day saw presentations by Premier Savikataaq and GN ministers David Akeeagok, Jeannie Ehaloak, David Joanasie and Lorne Kusugak, as well as Kivalliq Inuit Association president David Ningeongan, CEO of Arctic Co-operatives Rod

Wilson and manager of community and investor relations for North Arrow Minerals Nick Thomas.

Day two saw Nunavut MLAs Patterk Netser and Cathy Towtongie step up, as well as Calm Air president Gary Bell, Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo, GN minister George Hickes, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. president Aluki Kotierk, Dr. Maria Bronson (Building Strength in Naujaat) and Growing North co-founder Ben Canning.

Leonard said there was focused discussion on training citizens to work in the mining industry.

He said the mayors were unified on the importance of having as much training as possible take place in the Kivalliq and as quickly as possible.

"Everybody was together on that point, for sure," said Leonard.

"It was a really nice, sort of intimate, setting which produced a good meeting with everyone talking and participating."

Leonard said with the GN being about 18 months into its mandate now, there were no major surprises or announcements.

To him, the strongest aspect of the meetings was the level of participation from each hamlet representative, he said.

"These meetings had the best representation from cabinet we've ever seen," he said.

"That led to us reaffirming our commitment to each other to work together as a group moving forward.

"There was full participa-

tion from every community, which doesn't always happen, so, for me, the overriding feeling leaving the conference was one of co-operation.

Leonard said Arviat is looking for help with mental-health issues, as is pretty much every community in the Kivalliq.

Demand far exceeds the capability of what help is available across the region, he said.

"There was ongoing discussion on a regional elders' facility of some kind, probably located in Rankin and the need for more workers in the mental-health field.

"Mental-health workers in Arviat kind of come and go.

We're supposed to have three but, generally, we have one or two and, for the size of our community, three is probably

low to begin with."

Host community SAO Rob Hedley said the forum was productive because leaders who had been wanting to talk for a long time were all in the room.

"As far as participation and communication between the parties involved, it was one of the most productive mayors' meetings we've had in quite awhile," he said.

There's been frustration in the past as to who was invited to the annual forum and who actually came, he said.

"One thing I worry about is that sometimes you get all the people in the room who say they have a lot to talk about and then they sit on their hands," said Hedley.

"To its credit, the GN came to us and said it was trying to address various issues and

wanted frank and real discussions.

"I can't speak to all the past mayors' meetings – although I've been involved with all of them at various levels – but there has always been frustration over the fact we weren't talking to the people who we wanted to be talking to.

"We all have common cause in health and infrastructure and many of the presentations were quite good this time, especially with Health Minister George Hickes and Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo."

Hedley said the meetings did clear some of the air around the Kivalliq's infrastructure needs.

He said it's no secret what communities are struggling with, in that there just aren't enough dollars or resources to go around.

Rankin man first Nunavut futsal player invited to Team Canada camp 'I was surprised to be selected,' says Kris Ukpataujaq

Kris Ukpataujaq of Rankin Inlet was over the moon when he found out he was one of 20 players invited to a Team Canada national futsal evaluation camp in Gatineau, Que., earlier this month.

Ukpataujaq, 26, became the first futsal player from Nunavut to be invited to a national camp and he hopes to pass on what he learned to up-and-coming players in his home community.

"We're on the right track to improve our program in Rankin and I really want to help make that happen," he said.

The players who attended the camp were selected during a 2017 national qualifying tournament in Kingston, Ont. Team Canada picked a 20-player all-star team from the qualifying tournament to attend the evaluation camp and further their skills from there.

"I was surprised to be selected, but then I had a meeting over the phone with them and the coach (Kyt Selaidopoulos) told me what to expect, so I started to get more comfortable then," said Ukpataujaq.

Kyriakos (Kyt) Selaidopoulos was appointed as Canada Soccer's national futsal coach for CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) and FIFA competitions in 2016.

At the time of his appointment, Selaidopoulos was a former national futsal player who represented Canada in CONCACAF competitions in both 2013-14 and 2012.

He also represented Canada in beach soccer, including the 2006 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Ukpataujaq said the national camp was at a very high level and quite intense.

He had to learn and adapt to a whole new system of play that he was totally unfamiliar with, he said.

"The camp was a real eye-opener as to how Team Canada uses its offensive and defensive systems and, also, how to shut those systems down if you're playing against them," he said. "They taught me how to come back to Rankin and try to pass on what I learned to help our senior team improve and start coaching the younger generation.

"I'm not sure how our guys will react to a new way of playing – if they start to learn Team Canada's system or not – but in my mind, a team has to be able to play an effective system to be successful.

"Our Rankin team plays a more run-and-gun style but everyone is

on the same page with a system and, when you see play at the highest level, you see it's far more tactical and structured."

Ukpataujaq said he doesn't know where he was ranked at the evaluation camp, but he adjusted to the new system fairly quickly.

He said he's waiting for an email to arrive to know what comes next.

"I'm honestly not sure if the players at the camp are all going to be on one team to compete, or if there will be cuts.

"I guess I'll find out in the email."

Ukpataujaq said the camp really got him revved-up and he wants to start helping a new generation of players learn how to play better.

Unfortunately, he has another hurdle in his path before he can restart his futsal coaching career.

"Our guys are all starting to get a little older, so it's time to start focus-

ing on the younger kids now," said Ukpataujaq.

"I coached once five years ago and took Rankin's U15 boys to Whale Cove, where we won the tournament, winning 1-0 in the final game of our season, but I couldn't go back the following year because I started work at the camp (Melia-

dine).

"I wasn't picked to coach this year before I left for the evaluation camp – which I don't understand because I had said I really wanted to – even though I moved back to town to work so I could. So I guess I have to start over. I'm trying to find out what I have to do."
