Strong showing Kivalliq/Iqaluit The Kivalliq region put in a strong showing at the annual awards ceremony to recognize Nunavut's best in sport.

The event is hosted by the Sport and Recreation Division of C&GS and the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN).

Listed below are the four awards taken home to the Kivalliq during the Oct. 22 ceremony in Iqaluit: First Air President's Award for Excellence David Clark (hockey), Rankin Inlet Female Athlete of the Year Natalie Baker (wrestling), Arviat Official of the Year Paul Stroeder (soccer), Rankin Inlet Special Recognition Award Doris Bruce (soccer), Coral Harbour

Board members appointed Rankin Inlet Roxanne Reudiger of Rankin Inlet was one of three people appointed to Qulliq Energy Corp.'s board of directors

by Minister Responsible for Qulliq Energy Jeannie Ehaloak on Oct. 18.

Also appointed were Juanie Pudluk and Nastania Mullin of Iqaluit. The appointments are for three-year terms.

The recent additions expand the board of directors to 10 members and bring the board to 50 per cent Nunavut Inuit representation.

Ship inducted NWT/Nunavut The Canadian Arctic's tall ship, North Star of Herschel Island, was inducted into the Northwest Passage Hall of Fame at the annual Arctic Awards Gala at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

The ship is currently moored at the Vancouver Maritime Museum's Heritage Harbour.

North Star is the last of the sailing ships involved in Canada's Arctic fur trade.

Originally owned and operated by two Inuit trappers, Fred Carpenter and Jim Wolki of Sachs Harbour, from 1935 until 1961, she was subsequently chartered by both the John Diefenbaker and Pierre Trudeau governments to assert Canadian Arctic sovereignty.

Recently North Star served as the Canadian goodwill ambassador at an international tall ships festival.

Also inducted were Sven Johansson for being the first captain to sail a private vessel through the Northwest Passage and the Hudson's Bay Co. for its 1920's expedition to set up a fur trading post on King William Island.

Officers train for fire investigation in Rankin 'Our firefighters get the job done that needs to be done'

Fire officers from across Nunavut descended upon Rankin Inlet for a sixday course on fire investigations from Oct. 22 to 26.

Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said every member of Nunavut's Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) attended the training facilitated by veteran Ontario trainer and fire investigator Gary Jarrett, who has about two decades of experience investigating fires within a municipal fire department.

The course covers such topics as the basics of burn pattern analysis, explosion investigations, vehicle fires, how to liaise with the OFM and other attending agencies and other related topics.

Wyatt said a number of assistant fire marshals took the course in Rankin, as did members of various departments across Nunavut.

He and George Aksadjuak participated from the Rankin department.

"The course, basically, allows us to study fire patterns and the way things burn so that we can investigate the fires and determine their causes," said Wyatt.

"Whenever a fire happens, an investigation follows to determine the cause ... whether it was incendiary, accidental or, perhaps, an act of God. "The idea behind the investigation is to determine the cause for the insurance company and also to determine if there was a possible crime committed.

So, this is why we study all different kinds of fires."

Wyatt said the course is divided between the classroom and the field.

He said six different burn scenarios were set up for the Rankin course.

"Our fire department built the rooms inside different sea cans and then the

various groups of students set up each different scenario.

"We had fire scenarios in two different bedrooms, two living rooms, an office and a truck.

"Ideally, you want at least two people in your department to be able to conduct a fire investigation."

"The course is primarily taken by officers and chiefs. We had no one below the rank of captain in the Rankin course."

Wyatt said each scenario was set up with one idea in mind, but most had a number of possibilities as to what could have caused the fire.

He said as long as each scenario burned properly, the investigators would have to do a little bit of thinking to come up with the main cause of the fire.

"We put in about 18 to 20 hours to build the rooms within the sea can," said Wyatt. "Each unit had a full room, including floor, ceiling, drywall installation – the whole bit.

"The rooms were built first, then we sourced all the furniture to be put into them and went from there," he said. "It was an excellent course delivered by a great instructor."

Michael Leduc became Nunavut's fire marshal this past May. Leduc said the Rankin course went quite well.

He said the students were really engaged throughout the training.

"The instructors brought a lot of experience into this, so everyone on the course learned a lot about fire investigations," said Leduc.

"What you're looking at from a fire investigation perspective is that you take what happens at a fire event, you go in and figure out the origin and the cause and from there you're able to better understand how to prevent fires in the future.

"So, we use that across the territory to build our fire prevention program. As part of public education, we go into the schools and explain the dangers and concerns that are going on the community to help prevent fires in the future.

"As well, if the RCMP require assistance, then we're there to assist them with their arson investigation."

Leduc said any number of people could indicate there's something suspicious happening in connection to a fire.

Once something suspicious is noticed, the RCMP are notified immediately, he said.

"It could be a firefighter at the scene who notices something, the fire chief or one of my staff – but once someone indicates there's something suspicious, then it's immediately treated as a suspicious fire."

Leduc said his office would like to train as many people as it can across the territory in the different aspects of fire investigation.

He said, ideally, it would be great to have one or two people in each community with experience in fire-investigation training.

"My staff will come out and support that training across the board and some of the police officers in the territory have fire-investigation training, as well," said Leduc. "The volunteer firefighters in Nunavut work very hard and train on a continuous basis."

"The fire marshal's staff puts together training programs for them. They're constantly trying to improve and they work hard to get there," he added. "Our firefighters get the job done that needs to be done." bf l A ᐃᑭᑦᑐᖃᖅᑎᓪᓗᒍ m4WZz 9

Cadet Lieut. Dorothy Tootoo has another special memory of her years in the North to cherish after being presented with a defence commendation for her work with the 3019 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Rankin Inlet by Joint Task Force North Commanding Officer Brig. Gen. Patrick Carpentier in Iqaluit on Oct. 18.

Tootoo will officially end her position with student support at the Kivalliq campus of Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) this coming January, although her last day in the office will be Nov. 2.

She and her husband, Luc Paquet, are moving to Lac du Bonnet, Man., after 14 years in Rankin.

Tootoo said she's really going to miss the cadets in Rankin after she moves.

She said she's also going to miss her job at NAC a great deal.

"I've enjoyed every different aspect of my time at the college from my colleagues, to the new people who come in and the camaraderie you find everywhere here," said Tootoo.

"My whole time here has revolved around that type of lifestyle."

Tootoo, who was corps commander from late 2006 until November of 2017, said she can't say enough positive things about the years she spent with the cadets of the 3019 RCACC. An incredible honour She said it was incredible to receive the defence commendation at the end of her tenure with the 3019, an experience she described as quite humbling.

"In my eyes, the Defence Commendation is an award that goes to soldiers.

"Why did they pick me when there's so many other deserving people out there?

"I just found it really, really humbling and I don't have the words to describe how I felt because it was so far beyond anything I could have ever expected."

Tootoo said she is proud to have received the commendation.

She said for all the work she put into the cadet program, its success during her time with the corps comes down to all the people who helped her along the way.

"I do know, myself, how many hours I put in and the things I've done with the cadets and other officers who came in and out of Rankin – and

not just from the cadet program, but from the Rangers and various military personnel who came to conduct exercises – we were always here and available to help them with whatever we could," said Tootoo. "I received this award because of the people around me. And I've become a better person by doing the things I did with the cadets and at my job with the college."

"They expanded my horizons and made me think in so many different directions," she said. "You have to be open, willing to accept things and look at people from all walks of life

coming in with their own hopes and dreams, whether it's a child coming into cadets as a 12-year-old or an adult coming to NAC for secondaryeducational opportunities."

Tootoo said she leaves the 3019 RCACC with concerns about its future.

She said that's mainly because the corps can't find anyone to assume the bus duties it depends so heavily upon.

"Sakku allows us to use its bus but we have to provide our own driver and we've been having difficulty finding someone who can take on that responsibility," said Tootoo.

"We were fortunate to have Joe Makkigak drive the bus for many years and I'm not sure we can find anyone else in the community able and willing to do it."

"The lack of a bus driver could seriously hurt the corps because the FOL site, where we meet, is so far out of town," she said.

"If we can find a bus driver and enough people sign up again, the corps can keep going because we have enough senior cadets capable of carrying the corps, such as Warrant Officer Clifford Tatty and Master Cpl. Sakkattaaq Zawadski."

The annual Rankin Rock Season Opener hockey camp attracted its largest numbers yet with almost 200 players participating in the camp at the Rankin Inlet arena from Oct. 14 to 19.

The award-winning camp will also be making visits to Baker Lake and Arviat during the next six weeks, marking the first time camp developer and head instructor David Clark has taken it outside of Rankin Inlet.

Chester woman beating diabetes 'I'm determined to continue eating right because it does work'

Charlotte Kattegatsiak was determined not to let her diet ruin her health when she tested positive for diabetes this past May in Chesterfield Inlet.

Five months later, Kattegatsiak, 50, is no longer affected by the disease.

Kattegatsiak, who works with Kivalliq Counselling and Support Services, said she had not been feeling her best for a good while before testing positive for diabetes.

amount of rest seemed to rejuvenate her.

"I actually thanked them when I got the news because I had been having problems with certain foods that I ate, especially white flour and now I knew why and what I had to do to get better," said Kattegatsiak.

"I researched diabetes – how to diet, what to drink and what to do – and then I went on a very aggressive diet."

Kattegatsiak said she totally cut herself off from white flour, sugar and salt when she changed her eating habits.

She said she was very happy when her follow-up tests came back negative for diabetes.

'The mental challenge' "I had told my husband I thought I got rid of it (diabetes) about two months ago because I wasn't suffering from any of the symptoms anymore and, when I saw Dr. Ron Aspinall, I told him the same thing.

"He wanted to do more blood work and when I sat there with him about two weeks ago, he looked at me and said I don't have diabetes anymore," said Kattegatsiak. "The mental challenge of sticking to the diet is the hardest part, especially during the first six weeks, but I'm sticking with it because I don't want to go back to the way I was struggling before."

"Our local Co-op store manager Yvonne Scala has really supported me by bringing in what I need to stick with my diet," she added. "And I'm determined to continue eating right because it does work and I don't want to risk what can happen with diabetes, such as losing your toes or your eyesight and having heart problems."

Aspinall said one marker of diabetes is to check one's blood sugar level, while the other is a HbA1c test (hemoglobin) which shows a threemonth average of the level.

He said anything above 6.1 is diabetes and Kattegatsiak was at 6.4 when she was diagnosed.

"When she came back she was at 5.6, which is well down in the normal range," said Aspinall.

"So she went from definitely diabetes to definitely not diabetes during a three-month period.

"This is relatively rare because most people don't follow the diet recommendations and just keep on doing what they want so the diabetes slowly gets worse and they need more-and-more medicine as time goes on."

Dangers of sugar Aspinall, who is now in his twelfth year in the Kivalliq between Arviat, Chesterfield Inlet and Coral Harbour, said health professionals now know one of the worst culprits in a weak diet is food that turns to sugar fast, such as processed foods like pasta, bread and breakfast cereals.

He said the effect is almost as bad as pouring sugar down one's throat.

"Rice is another that turns to sugar very quickly and rice cakes are even worse because you're dealing with processed rice.

"Most people are loathe to change their diet ... but Charlotte (Kattegatsiak) was astute enough to understand and want to do something about it, so she told me she'd do whatever I told her.

"She was absolutely thrilled when I gave her the results of her second HbA1C test."

When Aspinall is doing nutritional counselling, he often recommends people eat foods such as oatmeal, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes.

"Charlotte will remain diabetesfree if she maintains her current diet, but it's not just people with diabetes that need to watch their diet, but, rather, it's everybody at every age, said Aspinall. "We've found that

"Studies show that if you look at all the problems alcohol and tobacco have, sugar (fast carbs) beats them both."

"Those in the food industry have hidden sugar in all sorts of foods because they know people will buy them more," he said.

"And, while there are different theories as to why, Inuit are very, very heavy on sugar and starchy foods."

Aspinall said when speaking about nutrition, he doesn't like using words like good, bad, properly or even healthier.

He said he prefers to use the terms

eating strong and eating weak.

"Saying if you eat strong foods you're going to have a stronger body than if you eat weak foods, basically tends to stigmatize it in a less judgmental way than healthy or unhealthy, or good or bad," said Aspinall. "If you eat junk food it takes away your appetite for real food."

"All this also plays a role in food insecurity in that the money going to junk food and tobacco is substantial and it's precious money taken away from the food budget," he said.

"The evidence against sugar is huge and the public needs to know that sugar and starchy foods are a lot more harmful than people realize."

'I just love it in the Kivalliq'

The Kivalliq Art Camp will be held in Rankin Inlet from Nov. 5 to 13.

The annual camp is sponsored by the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA).

This year's instructors will once again feature Rob Saley, Paul Mantrop and Andrew Qappik.

Mantrop said there's just too much on the go in Rankin during the summer and he's looking forward to travelling to Rankin in November.

This is his seventh time coming to the Kivalliq to help deliver the camp.

"I just love it in the Kivalliq and it's becoming a little more familiar each time," said Mantrop.

"Rankin's really becoming a familiar place to me. Rob (Saley) and I both love teaching and we really get results up North.

"You can see people really invested their energy into their work and you also see personal growth in people afterward.

"I don't know what it is, but it just seems to be that they're into it, focused and happy.

They make some nice art, get excited and want to make another piece."

Mantrop said the Kivalliq Art Camp is always a rewarding experience.

He said he's still impressed by the level of talent he sees every year at the camp, which has gone up since the camp expanded to all ages.

"We don't have any say in the selection of the students.

"I can recommend students to come back, but the KIA's policy is to give new people a shot first and then, if there's room, we can bring back some of the regulars.

"I enjoying seeing students return and being able to help them and I like to see what they've done during the past year to see if they've moved forward.

"I like the all-ages camp better because, when you get the elders in, they kind of keep the kids from messing around, goofing off, or not showing up."

Mantrop said he really noticed the difference in Whale Cove, when lower numbers in a small community prompted the opening of the camp to everyone.

He said a pair of female elders joined and they weren't long in setting the youth straight.

"We had a couple of grannies join and they didn't take any bull from anyone," laughed Mantrop.

"We had a couple of rough characters in that camp, but they listened to the two grannies and did what they said, I can tell you that.

"The mixed-age group we have now keeps the camp more interesting and every year the students are new.

"And we always seem to have one or two students every year – young and old – who just start to shine from inside when they create something that they can call their own.

"The addition of Andrew Qappik four or five years ago really resolved our curriculum too, so now I'm teaching portraiture, Rob's teaching landscape and Andrew is teaching traditional Inuit stencil technique."

Mantrop said he was particularly impressed with the variety of subjects that were done in Naujaat.

He said the students they had really drew from their life experiences to produce their art.

"We had people doing pictures of their grandpas hunting, or narwhal – just life in general in their community.

"We always do a little exhibition at the end of each camp and the Naujaat work really made for the best one we'd done.

"Seeing life in the community of Naujaat come to life in their art was really cool."
