School plans unveiled Coral Harbour Staff members from Government of Nunavut's (GN) Department of Education and the Department of Community Government Services visited Sakku School in Coral Harbour to discuss the expansion and renovation of the school this past month.

According to a news release from Troy Rhoades, acting manager of communications for the Department of Education, the two GN departments gathered feedback on Sakku School's proposed new floor plan and phasing-in schedule.

Rhoades wrote that the phasing-in schedule identifies that the new gymnasium will be built first, then the old gymnasium will be renovated.

He wrote this will ensure that students, staff, and the community will always have access to a gymnasium during the renovations.

"The old gymnasium space is expected to be converted into a new trades and home studies area, which will include a wood shop and bigger kitchen for lessons and community use," wrote Rhoades.

He added, that, similarly, high school students will have a different entrance to the school than that of elementary and middle school students.

"Some upgrades during the renovation include acoustic insulation, which prevents sound from travelling between classrooms. There will be internet through the school and interactive projectors in every classroom.

"The library will be moved to the central area of the school, so it is more easily accessible to every class. A daycare will be added to the school and will have its own separate entrance, in-floor heating to make it comfortable for toddlers to crawl around, a sleeping area, a washer and a dryer."

The tender to build the expansion, and work on the renovation is planned to start in 2021.

Covid threatens medical travel Kivalliq Nunavut's Department of Health is alerting all Kivalliq residents that an increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 in Manitoba has prompted the province to reduce services, which might impact some medical travel to Winnipeg.

In response, clinical staff will be reviewing all scheduled medical travel out of the Kivalliq region. Patients will be notified by their health centre about their medical travel.

Anyone having questions regarding their scheduled medical travel are asked to please direct their inquiries to their local health centre and not Kivalliq Inuit Services.

Baker Elder worries about Covid-19 with CBC visit Joan Hitkati said rules should be the same for everyone

Joan Hitkati of Baker Lake was not happy when she saw a post on social media about Manitoba-based CBC employees on their way to her community without being tested for Covid-19 and, more importantly, not having to quarantine like everyone else in the community.

Travellers on medical from Baker Lake, after isolating for 14 days in Winnipeg, shared a plane with two of the CBC staff, first from Winnipeg to Rankin Inlet and then from Rankin to Baker Lake.

Hitkati, 72, said she was afraid for the health of community members.

She said she's grateful that Nunavut residents have been under strict protection measures for their safety, and wonders why that would be risked for employees from the CBC. "All that isolation and millions of dollars spent would all be useless should 'essential workers' get careless and spread the virus," said Hitkati. "I feel it would not be fair to hundreds of Nunavut residents who valiantly obeyed all the rules to prevent the virus (from coming here). Someone tell me, what's essential about CBC workers coming to Qamanittuaq?"

Jane Tran, regional manager of communications, marketing and brand for CBC's Northern and Saskatchewan regions, stated that CBC

sent four employees from its transmission services division to Baker Lake on Oct. 29 to perform "critical emergency" tower repair work.

"This work was required to keep our FM radio broadcast on the air," Tran stated.

CBC staff in the area have been approved for travel by the territorial chief public health officer in writing after staff filled out the Nunavut travel form. The travellers have been made aware of, and are abiding by, all required health precautions, according to Tran.

She noted that the tower repair in Baker Lake has been completed and the two tower contractors returned to Winnipeg on Sunday. The remaining two staff have work to finish in Arviat until Wednesday, she added.

Hitkati said everyone should have to play by the same rules with Covid19.

"The same rules should be applied to everyone who are coming up to Nunavut, especially from Winnipeg.

"I myself would refuse to get on the same plane if I knew there were non-isolated, non-tested persons on the same plane.

"Why are we put in a risky situation by their presence? At least warn us of such visitors so we can avoid them."

Hitkati said she thinks everyone has been affected in every area of their lives due to the virus.

"Just because we do not have cases yet in Nunavut, that doesn't mean we're worry-free.

"Like many other Elders and younger Inuit from my community, I decided to postpone my med-

ical appointments twice that I had waited more than 18 months for in the city.

"Having to have an escort would also mean a double risk for our community, family and contacts; not to mention the 14 days in isolation, which is very nikal'lungangnaq ihumamul'lu (stressful).

"If we're going to be visited in our communities by people who have not been tested for Covid-19, and who do not have to isolate, we should be given awareness so we have the option of whether to take part in whatever it is they're doing here."

The seventh annual Northwestel Rankin Rock hockey camp opened the new hockey season in Rankin Inlet in grand style in Rankin Inlet from Oct. 19 to 23.

More than 200 registered minor hockey players from across the Kivalliq participated in Rankin's five-day camp.

Things to consider as liquor plebiscite approaches Northern News Services

With only a few days to go until the Nov. 9 liquor plebiscite in Arviat and Coral Harbour, the arguments for both sides are heating up and there is precious little, if anything, new being said by either side that we haven't heard before.

Alcohol has a grim reputation in most Kivalliq communities but the fact is that as long as there are people in any community who want to drink, alcohol will find its way to them through the bootlegging element and that strikes a community twice as hard.

Families pay the high prices asked by bootleggers at the expense of food, clothing and community's most important resources Sanikiluaq in all of this, the children.

Binge drinking is also in the equation whether some folks want to realize it or not. And, it's been proposed that binge drinking often takes place when people of a community don't have easy access to alcohol.

Having to pay so much money for the alcohol they do get through their community's bootlegging element, it becomes a game of more bang for the buck in getting the most effect for the money, and folks in that situation rarely master the trick of being able to drink sociably or responsibly.

A nice little five-day getaway in Yellowknife for longtime Rankin Inlet resident Evan Morrison and his girlfriend had at least one upsetting incident, thanks to a poorly marked parking lot, especially for someone visiting and not used to the area.

Morrison, who resides in Iqaluit, and his girlfriend headed out for a bite to eat at the NWT Brewing Company this past Friday, Oct. 30. when things took a turn for the worse.

Morrison said they were approaching the eatery in their rented car when they noticed a sign saying 24-hour parking right across the street from the restaurant.

He said they parked the car and headed inside to eat.

"We made it in to get seated at our table and had just placed our order when, maybe a minute later, the waitress comes over and asks if anyone's driving a white Ford Explorer because it's being towed.

"I jumped out of my seat and went out the door to see another waitress watching my Explorer get towed up the road, so, I'd say from the time we parked until the time she said it was being towed was less than 15 minutes."

Morrison said the lot owner and the tow truck company made absolutely no effort to contact him before towing the Explorer away.

He said there was no other parking around the restaurant, so it seemed reasonable for him to park there.

"I phoned Age Towing and they told me they'd meet me there to get the vehicle back.

That ended-up costing me $315 plus GST and a

"I tried to tell him we didn't know the lot was owned by HAKS Autobody and we were only there for about 15 minutes and I was told that's what everybody tells them. Then, when I called HAKS Autobody to explain my case, I got hungup on. It was just brutal."

Morrison said he was told by someone at the restaurant that it wasn't uncommon for cars to get towed from that spot, but, being from Nunavut, neither he nor his girlfriend were aware of that.

He said the staff at NWT Brewing did every-

thing they could to make them feel better and even gave them a price deduction on their meal, "which was super nice of them."

"As far as coming to Yellowknife as a tourist, it wasn't a great experience, so I want to get this story out there so anyone else visiting the city doesn't end up at the parking lot at HAKS Autobody and meeting Age Towing … but everything else about Yellowknife was great and people at NWT Brewing were awesome."

Kivalliq News reached out to Age Towing for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

While Team Todd will be competing at the 2020 Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's hockey championship in Rankin Inlet from Nov. 26 to 29, the team won't be there defending the B Division title it won at the 2019 event.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the TTM committee to make this year's tourney a territorial event with all 10 teams competing in one division.

Team Todd captain Jason Todd also won't be making the trip to Rankin this month for the TTM, due to his work commitment at the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake.

Todd said he's not worried the switch to an A Division-only format this year due to Covid-19 will remain in effect during future years, due to the success of the B Division this past year.

He said he was told by TTM committee member Troy Aksalnik that it's being done in one division this year to prevent having no event at all this year.

"No one knows what's going to happen with this Covid, but Troy told me they're also going to attempt to have the regular 2021 TTM this coming March," said Todd.

"Troy told me there will definitely be a B Division at that event."

Team Todd has already lost a handful of players from its championship squad which it had to replace.

Todd said it's disappointing not to be able to defend the championship with the same squad that won it, but that's the nature of the beast with senior men's hockey.

Meadowbank during the 2021 TTM, he will be in Rankin to lead his squad in defense of its B Division title, provided Covid doesn't mess with the event yet again.

"It has been a little disappointing to win the B Championship and not have a proper chance to defend it, but that still might change.

"Troy told me that we'd definitely get the chance to defend it in March, provided, of course, the Covid situa-

tion allows it.

"He told me they're going ahead with the 10 teams in one division this month so they don't risk losing the interest of the people on teams from the other communities.

"I think, too, they have some money that they want to put back into the tournament and, just as importantly, back into the community by holding this month's tournament for 2020."

Todd said he's confident Team Todd will still be strong enough to give their B Division title defense a good go.

He said he has a hard time imagining the TTM being played in front of an empty arena due to Covid, and he wasn't that impressed with the NHL hockey being played that way.

"Honestly, I found it rather weird and rather boring.

"I really believe the crowd is part

of the game and players try harder when they hear people cheering for them.

"As for us, I'm really hoping things go well with the next two planned TTM tournaments, and I wish all the guys on Team Todd the best of luck competing in the A Division of this month's TTM. "It absolutely sucks that I'm not playing. I want to come home big time."

Halloween success in Rankin Month of October a stellar one for community despite ongoing pandemic

The sound of children's laughter during this ugly age of the Covid19 pandemic was a welcome sound in the community of Rankin Inlet, as kids dressed in all manner of ghost, ghoul or celebrity joyfully bounded from house to house trick or treating this past Saturday, Oct. 31.

Everyone paid heed to the few sanctions placed on the festivities, and the community was reportedly well-behaved during an evening that some years can bring just as many ill-spirited tricks as generously given treats.

This Halloween also featured the Haunted Hall, once again, courtesy of the Rankin Inlet Fire Department.

The community's trick-or-treat time was set for the hours of five to seven p.m., while the Haunted Hall ran from six to eight p.m. to give the volunteer firefighters a little time to spend with their own children before dawning their

spooky apparel in an attempt to scare everyone else's at the scarily decorated hall.

Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Rankin Inlet had a lot going for it in October with the Northwestel Rankin Rock hockey camp going ahead, awesome Thanksgiving celebrations taking place with families around the community, and the high presence the Rankin Inlet Fire Department always maintains in the hamlet during Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said the department spent a good deal of time in local schools once again this year, helping to educate local kids during Fire Prevention Week.

He said the department was also quite active during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

"During Fire Prevention Week, the Rankin Inlet Fire Department delivered 15 classes at Leo Ussak Elementary School between kindergarten and Grade 4," said Wyatt.

"For Thanksgiving, the Rankin Inlet Fire Department delivered a total of 40 Thanksgiving dinners to
