The ace returns for a chase Rankin Inlet The mega-popular Chase the Ace fundraiser has returned to Rankin Inlet as a way to raise funds for the community's fire department and ambulance services.

Rankin had previously produced a win of more than $80,000 for Mike Shouldice when he picked the ace with only nine cards remaining in the deck.

On the short list Kivalliq Eleven exceptional projects – by the North, for the North – have been selected as finalists for the eighth annual Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP).

The selected projects range in scope and focus, with every one of the 11 demonstrating the potential to generate a lasting impact across Canada's North.

Encouraging, enabling and celebrating Northern achievement and innovation, the AIP is the largest prize in Canada dedicated to the Canadian Arctic, awarding up to $3 million every year across three categories.

The recommendations from the three regional selection committees for Inuit Nunangat, the NWT and the Yukon will now go to the AIP's National Selection Committee for the final laureates to be selected and announced at the AIP's 8th Annual Awards Ceremony.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa on Feb. 5, 2020, in conjunction with the Northern Lights Business and Cultural Showcase.

Charges laid Rankin Inlet Members of the RCMP's Rankin Inlet detachment were dispatched to investigate reports of an ATV driving at high rate of speed, not obeying stop signs and driving recklessly around the community at about 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15.

The same ATV had also been witnessed driving around with three people on it by Rankin by-law officers, which exceeds the lawful limit of two riders.

The RCMP were quick to locate the ATV and the driver of the machine was subsequently arrested for impaired driving after allegedly failing the roadside screening device.

The 20-year-old male from Rankin Inlet faces impaired driving related charges after he failed additional breath tests which showed him over the legal limit.

The dawn of a new era $26-million arena set for a first season in Rankin

With one snip from a pair of scissors, the ribbon floated to the ground and the long-awaited new arena officially opened its doors in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 23.

The opening of the arena had been delayed for about a month due to one section of the ice not freezing properly, but it should be nothing but smooth skating ahead for the hockey-mad community of Rankin and its brand-new state-ofthe-art facility.

The annual Season Opener Rankin Rock hockey camp started things off Sanikiluaq (Nov. 23 to Nov. 27) for the new arena this past weekend and things will get turned up a notch quickly at the new facility when the bantam hopefuls for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) arrive for their territorial trials from Nov. 29 to Dec 1.

Hamlet recreation co-ordinator David Clark said there were a few minor issues to be addressed in addition to the section of ice that wouldn't freeze, but everything has been taken care of and the new $26-million rink is set to go for its first season in Rankin Inlet.

He said he's glad the delay is in the rear-view mirror and everything will soon be caught up and back to normal.

"I've been feeling the pressure for a long time now and it was difficult when I didn't have a definitive date for anything to get going on," said Clark.

"We had the ice done in five days once we got the green light and that's pretty incredible to us. It used to take us about four weeks in the old building because the rink was nowhere near level and the ice-making plant itself wasn't the best.

"We have two inches of ice on top at the new arena, while, at the old building, we used to have eight-to-10 inches in the corners.

"It's hard to put into words how much of an improvement this really is for the community."

He said the kids trying to earn a spot on one of the teams heading to the AWG needed to get on the ice and be prepared when their selection camps began.

"Representing Nunavut at the AWG is a dream every hockey-playing kid in this territory has and there's no describing the feeling of pulling that Nunavut jersey down over your shoulders.

"Rankin always puts its best foot forward when it comes to getting our kids on the ice before these camps begin and it just didn't feel right not being able to do that this year.

"The arena delay was putting our kids in a tough situation and that really bothered me.

"I'm just glad it's all behind us now and we can concentrate on continuing to grow our game locally and across the entire Kivalliq region."

Clark said when something like the arena delay happens, the kids have to take it upon themselves to step-up their off-ice training and be prepared for

their camp opening.

He said a positive-and-determined attitude can take someone a long way towards being properly prepared for a selection camp, but there's nothing like lacing up the blades and taking to the ice to get a young player's competitive juices flowing.

"You can do any workout routine you want, but there's nothing like skating to fuel the desire and get a young player ready to go.

"We've had the kids on the ice a lot during our opening camp and I can guarantee you they're going to break-in this new arena as quickly as they possibly can.

"This has been a big project for the hamlet for a long time and I've been involved with it from the very start so I'm feeling a little bit of everything right now – being nervous, worried, scared, relieved, excited and pumped all at once.

"But the kids who skated out onto that ice for the very first time this past Saturday morning will remember that moment for the rest of their lives."

Families bond through learning Pilot project brings parent, child together surrounded by cultural initiatives

An early childhood learning program being delivered by Ilitaqsiniq: Nunavut Literacy Council is off to a strong start in Rankin Inlet with eager young children and their parents.

The Pinnguaqta program closely parallels the Parents and Tots program Kivalliq parents may be familiar with and focuses on children still too young to attend school.

The program runs from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 until 11:45 a.m. in the mornings and from 1:15 until 3:30 p.m. in the afternoons.

It is located in the same building that houses the Royal Bank of Canada in Rankin.

The Pinnguaqta program is being funded through Makigiaqta, Early Childhood Education and the Healthy Child Initiative.

Ilitaqsiniq's Kelly Clark-Lindell of Rankin Inlet said the program is hoping to catch the youngsters who aren't going to preschool, are not attending a day care and are either being babysat at home or staying at home with one or both parents.

Clark-Lindell said the program affords these youth a place to come during the day, socialize with other children, do arts-and-crafts activities and use their imaginations playing with a wide variety of toys.

She said the program's main focus is to be culturally relevant and, to that end,

they have elder Quluaq Pilakapsi on staff to help deliver the program being coordinated by Jovette Kurok.

"If you're coming in to see our program, you would use the same main entrance as the Royal Bank and, kind of, veer to your right after entering," said Clark-Lindell.

"We (Ilitaqsiniq) talked to a few teachers and members of the community in general who mentioned that we have so many children starting in kindergarten each year, that a number of them don't get a chance to attend preschool because there's just too many of them.

"We also heard about overcrowded houses and people having nowhere to go and that's always a thing in Rankin – they have nowhere to go and nothing to do.

"So we really wanted to put an emphasis on parents being involved with their childrens' learning."

Clark-Lindell said the Pinnguaqta program is not a place for people to drop their kids and expect someone to entertain them all day.

She said parents are expected to stay and play with their children and be involved with their learning activities.

"We made the decision to offer this program as a pilot project in Rankin to see if it proves itself valuable to the community.

"The need seems to be there because we've had people coming every day. On one day, we had about 30 people in our space and that was just great to see.

"We started during the third week

of October, I believe and we intend on running the pilot project until the end of March 2020.

"The community's response to the program has been all positive so far and we keep encouraging anybody else who is at home with their child, or children – even if you're just visiting Rankin for awhile and you have young children – to come and enjoy our space and meet new people in a very, very welcoming atmosphere where no one is turned away."

Clark-Lindell said one big benefit parents reap who attend the program regularly is being engaged with their child in whatever activities they're participating in.

She said there are many times a parent – and she includes herself – is too busy at home to answer their child's question because they aren't seen as the top priority at that time.

"Our program provides a space away from home where a parent and their child can escape and have a great time together.

"Other benefits include learning from our staff elder and having access to a lot of cool cultural toys that were made for us by the Niksik Shop in Rankin's Area Six that you just wouldn't find anywhere else.

We have little ulus, skin-scraping boards and little wooden guns that all the kids – boys and girls – play with that, hopefully, will lead to them learning how to use the real things one day.

"Just while playing, they're learning how to hold a harpoon or an ulu properly and, hopefully, being surrounded by all those things is going to pay off in the end."

Earning the right to celebrate Northern News Services

Although I have shared my thoughts on the matter here and there in past columns found in this space, it would be impossible for me to attend a grand opening like the once I witnessed last weekend for the new Rankin Inlet arena and not write about it.

Although not a sell-out (it was pretty darn close), it's been a long, long time since I experienced such a sense of community as what was evident in that new building on Nov. 23.

If there was one person present who wasn't grinning from ear to ear, smiling at every face they saw and shaking hands a plenty, I did not see them.

And why not?

As I reminisced with a few people last week over a meeting we attended in one of the salons at the Siniktarvik Hotel some 21 years ago – getting this new arena trailed only a road to Sanikiluaq Manitoba (dare we dream) on the wish lists our community leaders have been fighting the good fight to obtain during the past few decades.

And, the heck with all those out there who snicker when Rankin Inlet is described as Hockey Town, or when someone speaks publicly about how much the game of hockey means to the community.

We got here without you and we will continue to love our game, cheer for our teams, support their various fundraising efforts and enjoy that sense of community that surrounds every one

High steppin' good times for dancers Rankin youth group claims George Hapanak Memorial crown in Arviat

The youth team from Rankin Inlet took an emotional roller-coaster ride to the 2019 George Hapanak Memorial square-dancing championship in Arviat from Nov. 8 to 11.

The Rankin team arrived in Arviat to find out they were the only youth group signed-up for the competition.

At first they were told they'd be named youth champions without competing, but, in their minds, they had worked too hard for this trip to win anything that way.

They just wanted to dance.

Rankin female lead Shanti Dias said the committee members eventually allowed the Rankin youth to compete in the adult category, but only if they forfeited the youth championship money.

She said they were quite happy to do that because they went to Arviat to dance and that's exactly what they did.

"I guess I'd been building to that point since I started dancing with a couple of people who asked me when I was in middle school (Simon Alaittuq School) in Rankin a couple of years ago," said Dias.

"I can't say there was any one thing that drew me in, but square dancing is fun and it lets us feel a bit better about ourselves, so I decided to stick with it."

Dias said the Rankin dancers felt good at first, but they started to become more-than-a-little nervous as they watched other teams take to the floor.

She said they really thought other

teams were dancing better, so they decided not to worry about winning and just have a good time dancing.

"It was so funny when they announced the winners because when we didn't hear our names called for second or third, we thought we didn't win anything and we were a little down.

"Then, when they called our group for first place, we were really surprised and couldn't believe it. We were all so happy."

Dias said her mom, Shawna, made the Rankin outfits out of material donated by Eskimo Point Lumber Supply.

She said in her opinion, having nice outfits really does help when it comes down to the final judging.

"Our group has been practicing and dancing at open dances in Rankin for about the past 18 months and I just adore my mom's sewing, so it felt really good to be dancing in outfits she made for us.

"Mom also designed one of our outfits, but the girls in our group actually designed the outfits we wore during the final dance."

Shawna said when she saw how hard her daughter was working to make this trip, she decided to get involved too.

She said Shanti's teammate and cousin, Kailee Karlik, also steppedup to help and that made things even more memorable.

"I usually try to help any group needing a donation or a little extra help through my own small business, Dias Design's.

"I'm willing to put my time in to help any group that asks it of me."

Shawna said she was impressed by how the Rankin girls created their own design and then helped select the right colours and cut the material.

She said she also appreciated Karlik's help sewing it together.

"Avaala Sabourin's mom helped make the outfits the guys wore, so it was a real team effort all around," said Shawna.

"I wasn't able to go to Arviat

but people were doing live feeds on Facebook, so we sat at home and watched as it happened.

"We were so happy the organizers took into consideration my husband (Tony) messaging them on how hard the girls worked to raise the money for this trip.

"And I was also grateful when the committee allowed them to join the adult division because I love seeing teenagers involved with traditional activities."

Karlik said she loves everything about dancing with the group, especially the excitement of a competition and being on the floor dancing with multiple people.

She said she found square dancing complicated when she first started, but it pretty much

comes naturally now.

"I've been square dancing for about two years now and this was the second championship we've won during that time," said Karlik.

"They held a competition during the Christmas Games here in Rankin this past year, which we won even though we had to pick-up a couple of people because two dancers from our regular group couldn't make it.

"Square dancing is a great thing to be involved with because a lot of people like to watch you and it feels good when you're doing something traditional that highlights your culture.

"And it's so much fun when you get the audience just as excited as you are and everyone is yelling out at the same time."
