Food hamper help Rankin Inlet Hamlet staff members and volunteers put in a lot of extra hours and hard work to assemble 900 food hampers that were delivered to all community households in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 21 and 22.

The hampers were made possible with a donation to the community from Agnico Eagle.

Volunteers knocked on household doors to announce the arrival of the food hampers and left them just outside the door to ensure non-contact delivery.

People living in apartments and large multiplex buildings in Rankin Inlet, including Old Ilia, New Ilia, Tapariit, 33 Plex, 18 Plex and 200 block units, were scheduled to receive their deliveries from members of the local fire department throughout the day on Nov. 22. Sirens were sounded outside the buildings to announce the deliveries.

In Coral Harbour, as of Nov. 17, by order of the chief justice, all court operations and scheduled sittings at the satellite courthouse in Coral Harbour, along with court registry operations, have been suspended until March 1, 2021, pursuant to practice directive number 37.

All matters scheduled to proceed to hearing during this period of closure are hereby adjourned to March 1, 2021, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

All filing deadlines that fall before Nov. 23, 2020, are hereby extended to the close of business on March 1, 2021.

In Baker Lake, as of Nov. 17, by order of the chief justice, all court operations and scheduled sittings at the satellite courthouse in Baker Lake, along with court registry operations, have been suspended until April 13, 2021, pursuant to practice directive number 37.

Covid-19 numbers keep climbing New cases bring Nunavut total to 142

Three new positive cases of Covid-19 in Rankin Inlet and one in Whale Cove brought Nunavut's total to 142 confirmed cases this past Nov. 24, according to Nunavut chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson.

"As we head into our second week of increased restrictions in the territory, every single one of us needs to stay committed and dedicated to slowing and stopping the spread of this virus in our communities."

Whale Cove has a total of 15 positive cases with no evidence of community transmission.

Rankin Inlet has one new positive case, for a community total of 19 positive cases, while the two positive cases in Sanikiluaq have recovered.

Dr. Patterson said there remains no evidence of community transmission in Rankin Inlet, and that all 142 individuals with active Covid-19 are in isolation and doing well with mild to moderate symptoms.

He said contact tracing in all impacted communities is ongoing and public health staff are monitoring everyone in isolation.

"While the two cases in Sanikiluaq are now recovered, the current restrictions in the community still apply and I urge residents of Sanikiluaq to continue to follow the public health measures in place," said Dr. Patterson.

"I also want to remind all Nunavummiut that until health teams

have completed contact tracing and the virus spread is contained, the number of active cases will continue to fluctuate."

As of Nov. 23, 158 tests have been done in Rankin Inlet with negative results, while Arviat testing has yielded 375 negative tests. Testing in Whale Cove yielded 52 negative tests. Monitoring in Sanikiluaq continues.

Premier Joe Savikataaq said although the daily numbers of Covid19 cases in Nunavut seem scary, it is not a reason to panic.

He said Nunavut will continue to see dips and rises in its case numbers for some time.

"I am very proud of Nunavummiut for their efforts to slow the spread of the virus, and am incredibly grateful to every member of Nunavut's public health team for their amazing dedication and work in our communities," said Savikataaq.

"Let's all stay vigilant and compassionate as we fight Covid-19 in Nunavut."

Meanwhile at Agnico Eagle's Meliadine gold mine near Rankin Inlet, Melissa Bradley, community relations and communications superintendent for the company, reports an employee tested positive for Covid-19 on Nov. 17, which was confirmed by an accredited laboratory the following day.

Bradley said in an Agnico Eagle news release that the individual boarded the northbound flight in Mirabel on Nov. 17 and was tested

Nunavut chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson reported on Nov. 24, that the total number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 had surpassed the 140 mark in Nunavut. at the company's laboratory in Vald'Or, Quebec.

She said the individual did not present any symptoms. However, the testing facility has the ability to detect the presence of the virus even if the person does not show any symptoms.

"In accordance with the company's isolation protocols, the individual was isolated on site until being extracted on a special charter

flight later in the day on Nov. 17," said Bradley.

"Upon arriving at the mine site, employees from the Nov. 17 northbound flight were immediately placed in isolation in their rooms while a contact tracing exercise was conducted.

"The tracing exercise identified nine employees who may have been in contact with the individual. The company's extraction protocol was

activated, and protective measures were put in place to prevent potential contamination "The nine people identified as potential contacts remained in isolation at the mine site until being extracted from site on Nov. 18 on a special charter flight. They have been instructed to follow the recommendations of their provincial health authorities and will be re-tested prior to returning to site."

Covid-19, addictions a bad mixture Northern News Services

Addictions awareness should be amplified along with the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in Nunavut.

With the explosion of cases in Nunavut, which may take weeks to fully trace and isolate, the territory is in the midst of another lockdown.

Effective last week, the tightening health restrictions have closed schools and businesses, limited the number of people who can gather in one place and restricted travel.

What can't be stopped with a health order, unfortunately, are addictions. Despite the everchanging circumstances in a Covid-dominated world, addictions will remain, and, unfortunately, be exacerbated by lockdowns and restrictions.

With cases of the virus surging in the Kivalliq region and indications of community spread in at least one instance, imposing territory-wide restrictions was the right decision, without a doubt. There should be no questioning that, and everyone should continue to take those orders very seriously.

available studies or statistics specifically from Nunavut, but the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addictions released a study earlier in the year indicating that 25 per cent of polled Canadians were drinking more since the start of the pandemic. The most common reasons for drinking were a lack of a regular schedule, boredom and stress.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) also released a report in late October showing that efforts to minimize the effects of Covid-19 had resulted in the deteriorating health of Canadians – a large number of whom were turning to drugs, alcohol and tobacco to deal with the stress of the pandemic. Surveys from Statistics Canada have indicated nearly one in five Canadians was drinking more along with increases in tobacco and cannabis use.

Given the current situation with Covid-19 in our territory, there will be no stopping the harsh

but necessary health restrictions to save lives, even if it temporarily worsens addictions. This means now, more than ever, those afflicted with addictions will need the help of their community.

Cambridge Bay residents are already circulating on online petition to halt liquor imports into the community.

Even though Nunavut has been able to secure federal funding to get an addictions treatment centre in Iqaluit, which will be built in five years, hurdles to effective treatment remain.

Iqaluit Mayor Kenny Bell says that treatment facility is about 20 years too late and the territory is lacking in after-care programs.

Laurel McCorriston, executive director of the Uquutaq Society, says lack of access to housing will prevent some addicts from getting treatment in the south. She echoed Bell's statement on a lack of services upon return.

Bell also makes it abundantly clear that only those who truly want to get better will do so.

With tensions and the stresses of the pandemic mounting, it will only be harder for those already affected by addiction to get the help they need. Nunavummiut will need to look out for each others' health and wellbeing to weather the storm.

Tim Caulfield, the Canada Research chair in health law and policy at the University of Alberta, says you can essentially break antivaxxers into two groups.

The first group consists of full-on disbelievers who make up somewhere between two and five per cent of the population, depending on which study you look at. Their minds won't be changed.

The second group – somewhere between 20 and 30 per cent of Canadians – is for what some now call the vaccine-hesitant. They may get some of the required vaccinations for their children, but not all of them.

These two groups of Canadians could actually tip the balance as to whether enough of the population agrees to receive the vaccine to get us anywhere near the required 66 per cent we need to suppress Covid19, and that's taking for granted, of course, another roughly 30 per cent of Canadians eventually changing their minds and agreeing to the vaccination.

And I'm not holding my breath on that one anytime soon.

In short, a politician trailing by these polling numbers would simply give up the ghost and drop out of whatever race he or she was trying to win.

Hopefully, cooler heads and more well-informed minds will take over so we can defeat the pandemic in this country once a successful vaccine becomes available.

But, whether it's 95 per cent effective or not, a Covid vaccine in Canada today would be absolutely useless without a dramatic change in the thinking of about half our population.

Helping fight the Covid blues Arviat company doing its best to boost community spirit

With confirmed cases of Covid-19 rising in the hamlet on a daily basis, Jim Ramsay of Arctic Connection took matters into his own hands to try and brighten the mood of the community by preparing and helping to deliver 150 hearty meals to folks who could use an act of kindness in Arviat this past Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Ramsay said he wanted the meals to go to those in the community who, perhaps, could use a kind gesture and a bit of a helping hand during these most difficult of times.

He said he had also been talking to longtime Kivalliq resident Sean Maley about helping out a little bit, so, this past Monday morning, Nov. 23, Ramsay cooked-up 75 breakfast sandwiches, to go along with 75 muffins and packs of juice to distribute among Hamlet of Arviat staff workers.

He'll be doing the same thing again this coming Monday morning, Nov. 30.

"I've lost 25 out of my 30 staff workers here at the store during the past week or so, so it's been a little rough but you still want to help out where you can," said Ramsay.

"I just ordered a whack of quality bulk meats in because my plan is to do this every week if I possibly can.

"I had one girl help me put the meals together for about three hours on Nov. 18, but I was in the kitchen from about 4:30 in the morning. I threw-in 10 big loins-of-pork roasts and did each plate up with hot pork sandwiches, mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetables.

"I don't know what I get myself into sometimes, but I just do it because it helps people in the community and it makes me feel good, and that's all that matters."

Ramsay said the meals were delivered to the doors of a number of Elders whose names he was given.

He said he would casually ask his customers throughout the day if they could suggest anyone in the community who could use a good, nutritious, hot meal and appreciate the gesture.

"I was told of one family with, I believe it was, 13 kids there, so we sent over a bunch of meals to that house, and we had a girl help who took 30 meals and went to drop them off to different Elders, people in isolated buildings and things of that nature.

"We asked our customers for some names but, going

on seven years now here in Arviat, we know some of the Elders and other folks who, you know, can use a little extra help every now and then.

"Hilary Irwin also took some meals to drop off to a large family, so we got it done one way or another."

Ramsay said he had to shut his kitchen down with the pandemic raging, and figured what better way to make use of the store's beautiful kitchen than to do a little good in the community with the free meals.

He said he was more than happy to help, with the majority of people in the community more than a little scared right now with, as of press time, 58 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Arviat.

"People are scared, yes, but they're also doing pretty good. The momentum, I believe, is growing stronger to beat this thing.

"We're a little freaked out.

I mean, we're in the store every day and people from the two buildings that got nailed with Covid here are also in our store every day, so it worries you a bit, of course.

"I'm obviously going to have to be tested over the next day or two, but everyone coming into the store are wearing their masks, sanitiz-

Since the last Covid-19 related lockdown earlier in the spring, Nunavut has built up an improved testing capacity.

"The previous lockdown we had none in the territory, at the start of the pandemic we were flying everything south to labs, to do all of the analysis there," said Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut's chief public health officer (CPHO), on Nov. 18 when Nunavut's second lockdown went into effect.

Wait times for these were significantly longer than what the Government of Nunavut (GN) is capable of doing now.

"When we were reliant on that our average turnaround time was seven days and the range was up to 17 days when you think about how long it takes to fly samples south."

Over time the GN built up it's capacity for testing to be done within Nunavut.

"By the middle of the spring, certainly into May we had the GeneXperts online and we were doing limited testing in Iqaluit."

They now have improved testing capacity both in Iqaluit and in Rankin Inlet, both of which can confirm cases of Covid-19.

"We've accelerated from there, as of right now we have a GeneXpert and a BioFire in Rankin (Inlet) and in Iqaluit," said Patterson.

"The BioFire in Iqaluit can do eight tests an hour and the BioFire in Rankin can do four an hour, and we have the upgrades now on the way to

add extra modules in Rankin Inlet so they'll be able to eight an hour."

Anyone who has reason to believe they have been exposed to Covid-19 is advised to call the Covidhotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Thanking those on the front line TTM committee, Slapshot Canteen deliver about 40 meals to health workers in Rankin

Health workers in Rankin Inlet received a pleasant surprise when free meals were delivered to their place of work to thank them for their efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 18.

The meals were prepared and delivered through a partnership between Slapshot Canteen owner Chadd Burrill and committee members for the Terence Tootoo Memorial senior men's hockey championship.

Burrill said he was approached by committee member Troy Aksalnik this past week to cook lunch for the community's health-care workers.

He said even though it was extremely short notice, he felt it was really important to show the workers how much the community appreciated their efforts.

"I recently had to lay off all my staff members, including my two main workers Tristan Sammurtok and Chris Markell, so I really wasn't sure what direction I was going in with the canteen at the moment, with me the only one working," said Burrill.

"Troy wanted a good, hearty, cooked meal for them, so I suggested lasagna with a salad, which I made totally fresh that day in time for lunch after coming in at six in the morning.

"I'm not a baker by any means, but I got fresh lasagna, Caesar salad, a banana cream crumble cake and a bottle of water ready for all of them by lunch, and committee members

Troy (Aksalnik) and Hamish (Tatty) came, picked them up and delivered them to the health-care workers.

"I can't really remember how many they delivered, but somewhere around 36 to 40, I believe."

Burrill said as far as he knows, everything with the meal went extremely well.

He said Aksalnik told him all the health workers were very happy with the gesture, and they were all clapping and laughing when they brought the meals in.

"I had everything go out the door at 11:58 a.m., so we conquered," said Burrill laughing.

"I felt so bad about laying off my staff though. Tristan (Sammurtok) is just the best, you know, but she's also pregnant and I didn't want to risk her getting sick here, even though we were very, very shortstaffed already.

"I told her I appreciated everything she did throughout the entire year at the canteen here with me and that, once things get better, she can always come back here if she wants to.

"I just didn't want any of my employees getting sick while here at work because I would have carried that guilt around with me forever."

Burrill said he reopened the Slapshot Canteen this past Friday, working the kitchen by himself.

He said he's only allowing 10 people in line to pick-up their orders at any one time.

"What I'm going to do is have people call in their order, I'll give them their total and then they can (email money transfer) the funds to slapshotcanteen@gmail.com.

so I have to be open, but I don't want to put anyone in harm's way, especially my staff and customers who have all been so good to me."

On the land, away from Covid-19 Rankin family looks to the land and each other during lockdown

It's all about heading out onto the land near Qamaniq for Noel Kaludjak and his inner circle of family members in Rankin Inlet, as they turn to fishing and hunting to escape the threat of Covid-19 each day and the boredom of the community lockdown currently in effect across the Kivalliq.

Kaludjak said he and members of his family head out on the land just about every day.

He said there's also quite a few other people from Rankin Inlet setting nets in that area.

"It's nice to be out on the land every day and away from the threat of Covid-19," said Kaludjak.

"I bring my grandson, who is staying with us, along for the trips. He said he wants to isolate up there in our cabin now and not have to come back to town.

"We also look for caribou while we're out there – some guys I know have got some out there and some others have got a wolverine – and there's some muskox up there, so we might try for them. We'll see.

"We're thinking seriously

about it because there's some on Peter Lake, so we might go check them out and see how they are."

Kaludjak said it looks like there might be a record number of fishers out and about on the land near Rankin this year.

He said he's seen far more nets out there this year than he's ever noticed during past years.

"There's lots of nets out there right now and it's good to see people setting nets and catching a few char here and there.

"There's even more guys buying nets and setting them up in other lakes too.

"Fishing is on a high note right now and, I think, there's no doubt getting out of town and away from all the Covid stuff during the lockdown is the main reason behind a lot of that.

"Being out on the land is way better than being in town right now, but you gotta come back sometime."

Kaludjak said he always felt it was only a matter of time before Covid-19 made its way into Nunavut.

He said the Government of Nunavut did a really good job keeping it at bay for a long time but, unfortunately, the virus

managed to somehow sneak into the territory.

"We'll probably never know how, exactly, it made its way into Nunavut, but it's here now and we have to deal with it. We're lucky there's been no community transmission in Rankin yet that we know of.

"Our family has been doing lots of things together to keep our spirits up, like going out on the land and watching movies. I like cooking, so I've been doing a lot of that and making a few ulus here and there, while my wife has been continually sewing.

"And we go for rides and gather up the road once in a while. We don't take the kids out into the community at all, we just drive around to escape the house for a while. We, absolutely, don't let them out of the building without our supervision.

"We Facetime with family and make a mess and clean it up. Then we make another mess and clean that up. And we have a lot of music on the go, as well.

We do what we can to stay safe and keep our spirits up, which is all anyone can do right now, I guess, as we try to get through this together."
