Change of scenery for Darrin Nichol Former NDC president transferred to Nunavut airports in Rankin

Darrin Nichol of Rankin Inlet leaves the Nunavut Development Corp. proud of his record after 11 years at the helm of the Government of Nunavut operation.

Nichol, 50, said he had mixed feelings upon hearing the news from the GN that he was being transferred to become the director of Nunavut airports, but he's always felt that change is good.

He said looking back upon his 11 years as president of NDC, he feels lucky to have had always been surrounded with a strong supportive staff.

"The sale of Pangnirtung Fisheries back to Cumberland Sound Fisheries was a big, and important, move for us back in 2015," said Nichol.

"I can't say enough about the super long-term staff I've had around me over the years.

I was blessed to always have had such a great team surrounding me during my 11 years as president."

Economic Development Minister David Akeeagok said in the legislative assembly on Nov. 13, that, over the years, Nichol has given excellent guidance to the NDC, board, staff and clients.

He said Nichol served Nunavut to the fullest capability and has been very successful working with various business entrepreneurs, as well as investing with new business ventures.

"On behalf of the government and the NDC board and staff, we wish all the best for Mr. Nichol and thank him for all the hard work he has

done," said Akeeagok.

"Our chairman, Donald Havioyak, and I will miss his leadership and hope to find someone as enthusiastic and dedicated to fill those huge shoes."

Nichol said it's always nice to have your efforts recognized.

He said he appreciated Akeeagok recognizing his time with NDC in front of the legislative assembly.

"There's lots of opportunities out there for NDC moving forward," said Nichol.

"That's especially true on the equity-investments side and placing investments in Nunavut-based businesses to help grow the economy, create jobs, support the growth of business and the ongoing diversification of the Nunavut economy."

Nichol said there's nothing in particular he leaves behind that he wishes he had seen through to fruition.

"There's still plenty of new areas NDC can invest in sometime in the future," he said. "We made numerous new investments during my time there and there's an

appetite for equity capital across the territory.

"It's managed a little bit differently than a loan and it works well for many Nunavut-based businesses, so, absolutely, I see a lot of new investment possibilities in the future for NDC." Nichol said he became

friends with a number of people who work under the NDC umbrella over the years.

"Being president of NDC was a great job with a great corporation and I'm proud to have spend that many years there.

"It was an awesome experience."

Junior firefighters Baker Lake A total of five youths took part in a highly successful junior firefighters program in Baker Lake earlier this month.

It was the first time the Baker Lake Volunteer Fire Department held the program, which was organized and facilitated by Baker Deputy Fire Chief Vincent Inukpak.

The goal of the junior firefighters program was to help the youthful participants with their school credits, as well as to give the teenagers the chance to experience firefighting on a first-hand basis.

The youths undertook the same training regular firefighters do at fire halls across the Kivalliq region, but did not take part in any actual fire calls that came in during their training program. The five junior firefighters conducted a demonstration on the new skills they acquired at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School on Nov. 13.

The Baker Lake Volunteer Fire Department hopes to hold similar youth training programs in the future, based on the success of its inaugural effort.

Sanitary pad funding Kivalliq/Nunavut A GoFundMe initiative has been launched by the African and Caribbean Association of Nunavut (ACAN) under the title of Free Sanitary Pads for Nunavut School Girls to raise funds to buy and distribute packs of sanitary pads to schoolgirls across Nunavut.

Sanitary pads cost $7.99 in Ottawa, while the same pack cost $15.99 in the Nunavut capital of Iqaluit. The prices go higher in Nunavut communities farther away from the capital.

It has been reported to the ACAN that some girls across Nunavut have resorted to using socks during their monthly period as a result of these exorbitant prices.

Logo contest and society news Baker Lake The Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association is holding a contest to update the logo for its off-ice clothing.

The association is retaining the name Blizzard in the logo moving forward. Deadline to submit an entry into the contest and a chance to win the $250 prize and an article of clothing sporting the new design is 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29.

The contest is open to all members of the community and those participating in the logo contest may drop their designs off at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School or email them to craigkelba@gmail.com.

In other news from Baker Lake, the Abluqta Society distributed a total of 89 bags of dry goods to those in need in the community on Nov. 13.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the work being done in the community of Baker Lake by the Abluqta Society – or to become a volunteer themselves – are invited to attend the Abluqta Society's annual general meeting in Baker Lake on Tuesday, Nov. 26, beginning at 7 p.m.

Man found Rankin Inlet A search conducted by the Rankin Inlet search-and-rescue (SAR) team concluded on a happy note in Rankin Inlet on Nov. 16.

Nanukuluuk Anawak went hunting with his uncle, Loren Tagornak, earlier in the day. The two men were travelling by Honda ATV and were headed towards Mumiqvik when their vehicle broke down. The pair started walking towards the Meliadine camp near Rankin. When Tagornak arrived at the camp without Anawak, four SAR volunteers were immediately dispatched to look for the hunter.

More searchers joined later in the day before Anawak was found healthy and in good spirits.

It's been a busy month for the rejuvenated 3055 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) in Naujaat.

The cadets took part in a corps sleepover, went on parade for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony in the community, and held a special evening of community-service planning along with some tasty ice cream.

The corps sleepover is always eagerly anticipated by the cadets in the 3055 RCACC and this time was no exception, said civilian instructor Brittany Holm.

She said the cadets had a "riot" spending the evening together at Tuugaalik High School.

"The kids had planned the sleepover all by themselves for the past couple of weeks: deciding on a menu of tacos, pizza and caribou for the evening, which were all prepared at the school for them," said Holm.

"A projector was set-up in the school for us, so we were able to watch movies on a big screen. We played some sports, the kids did face masks and everyone slept in the gym.

"The local Co-op hotel (Inns North) manager catered breakfast for us and the kids were all thrilled because, to them, it smelled like Whitehorse (home to the annual cadet biathalon challenge) when he brought it in."

Remembrance Day is one of the biggest events of the year for the Naujaat cadets.

"We had 32 cadets on parade this year and everything went smoothly," she said.

"We almost had one girl faint, but we were able to get her off the parade in

time."

Cadets have to undertake a bit of community service each year they're in the program.

The Naujaat corps got together on Nov. 13, to discuss their plans for community service and decided they wanted to focus on helping the elders in the community.

Full house for Nov. 11 service 'Remembrance Day is the biggest day of the year for the Legion,' says Branch 169 president Pelagie Sharp

With the Remembrance Day service now in the rear-view mirror, members of the executive staff can breathe a little easier as the busiest time of the year for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 in Rankin Inlet moves towards the holiday season.

Branch 169 president Pelagie Sharp said she was happy when she saw how many people came through the doors for the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

She said she was a little concerned about the size of the crowd that would attend this year's service.

"I was honestly quite surprised that we had such a good turnout this year," said Sharp. "Everybody just got so used to having it at the school (Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik), so, when I decided to hold it at the new community hall, I was a little worried how that might affect the size of the crowd that came out.

"But, it turned out to be pretty much packed and I was very pleased."

The Legion recently donated $11,000 to the RCMP Christmas Food Hamper for Rankin Inlet and surrounding communities.

Sharp said the donation is one way the Legion gives a little back to the community it serves.

She said Branch 169 receives constant funding requests throughout the year from sporting groups, youth groups and various other initiatives.

"We provide funds to the food hamper, suicide prevention and a number of other initiatives in the community during the year.

"We can't always help everyone, but we do as much as we possibly can throughout the year."

Sharp said the Legion executive first started discussing the Remembrance Day service and making sure

She said it came down to the crunch in October to make sure they had enough dignitaries in place to carry the various wreaths to be placed at the cenotaph during the ceremony.

"Getting the support of our political leaders and the families who had grandparents serve in a war, or in the military in general, is huge for us because Remembrance

Day is the biggest day of the year for the Legion.

"The support we receive from our head command is phenomenal, and requests are sent from Ottawa to all the schools asking them to hold a poster contest in honour of Remembrance Day. "Sakku School in Coral Harbour reached out to us this year and they're supposed to be sending us some posters to judge for their school.

"We're going to put a focus on having the poster contest return to our schools here in Rankin next year."

Sharp said the Rankin Legion is available this year for any department or organization in the community that would like to host a private holiday party this year.

She said the Legion expects to be busy until about mid-December and will then, most likely, close its doors for a week to 10 days during the gov-

ernment's holiday closure.

"The Branch is busy, really, throughout the year, but between October and January is our busiest time, I'd say.

"The main thing is to have an executive team that pulls together and we all take different leads on the various events that happen throughout the year.

"We wouldn't be where we are today without the executive team we have in place right now."

The silence of freedom lost Northern News Services

The hot topic of conversation across the hockey-mad Kivalliq region during the past week was, of course, centred around the dismissal of Don Cherry from Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada for his "you people" reference to those who weren't wearing poppies in this country as Remembrance Day approached.

It will come as no shock to regular readers of Kivalliq News that I am a Cherry fan, but that comes from his knowledge of the game of the hockey and his 'every fan' persona.

Although I believe he meant well, he was off with the words he chose.

But, the three things that bother me most about Cherry's dismissal are, first and foremost by a mile, what has become of free speech in our country, followed closely by how we pick and choose who to punish Sanikiluaq for falling outside the boundaries of this politically-correct-gone-mad era and, finally, how one person is persecuted to the max for their slip, while another says much more and escapes with barely a whisper as long as they reside in, or are speaking-out against, the proper demographic.

Cadets have been keeping quite busy in the 3055 RCACC during the past few weeks in Naujaat.

The corps held a sleepover on Oct. 25, went on parade for the Remembrance Day service on Nov. 11, and had some fun and tasty ice cream during a planning session for their community-service requirements on Nov. 13 in addition to their regular weekly meetings.

Baker coach receives First Air President's Award of Excellence

Jim Kreuger of Baker Lake was named the winner of the First Air President's Award of Excellence by the Recrea-

tion and Parks Association of Nunavut during a recent ceremony in Iqaluit.

The award – for Kreuger's work with local amateur sports in Baker Lake – is for the period covering April 1,

2018, until March 31, 2019.

Kreuger was quite humble in his acceptance of the First Air President's Award of Excellence and said, upon hearing he had won the award, the first thought he had was

that there are so many people more deserving of the honour.

He said he really had to wonder if they got it right in naming him as this year's winner.

"In town here, there are a lot of people I work with who have worked longer and do more for sports than I do," said Kreuger.

"I was very honoured and grateful for the award, but I feel quite undeserving because since I do volunteer in sport, I'm aware of people who do so much more."

Kreuger coached indoor soccer in Baker for about four years and has worked as an elementary phys-ed teacher for the past three years, spending a lot of time on afterschool sports on top of his regular duties.

His biggest contribution to local amateur sports, however, comes from his dedication to minor hockey, which he has coached and been involved with at the executive level for a quarter century.

He continues to coach at the initiation-and-novice levels, which he took over with other local people about seven years ago.

Kreuger said he hasn't coached hockey at the older levels for quite some time, preferring, instead, to concentrate on kids just entering the game.

He said there are 31 kids registered for initiation in Baker this year, as well as 33 registered for novice.

"The biggest change I've seen, especially with the younger kids, is the level of parental involvement with the game today," said Kreuger.

"When I first started to coach, it was to help one of my neighbours, Frank Tootoo.

He asked me help and, since my son was just a little toddler playing hockey at the time, I agreed.

"Back then, it was just a couple of us out on the ice with a bunch of kids but, today, while there are two of us signed up as coaches, at any given practice we could have as many as six parents out on the ice, a number of moms and dads in the penalty box or

bench areas helping out, and plenty of grammas and grandpas in the stands watching.

"The amount of parental and family involvement with hockey in Baker Lake is the biggest change I've seen in the past 25 years and I see that as huge, positive change."

The game of hockey has undergone significant changes in Baker during the past two decades, with interest at the older levels waning for years and then starting to strongly rebound.

Kreuger sees that pattern as the result of body checking in the game, which may have turned-off some players who just wanted to have fun playing hockey.

He said there have been strong enrollment numbers at the initiation, novice and atom levels for the past seven years.

"For a while, our numbers took a dip when players entered the peewee and bantam levels and body contact came into play," said Kreuger, noting that body contact has since been removed from peewee across Canada.

"Our kids at the older levels now have the same people coaching from year to year and they're starting to meet with success.

"That has encouraged, I

believe, more kids to continue on through peewee/bantam into midget, where our numbers used to be sparse and we'd often have to team up with other communities to participate in tournaments.

"We're soon going to reach the point where we have enough homegrown talent to fill out teams in years to come and that's because the volunteer coaches now commit to it, meaning it's no longer a one-and-out thing in Baker Lake."

Kreuger said, by his definition, the future of minor hockey is bright in Baker.

He said he defines that future as kids simply having fun and enjoying playing hockey.

"We have our share of talent now and that talent will soon start to show itself at the territorial level, so, by that standard, other people will soon start to see the quality hockey players we have here.

"We've always had a love of hockey in Baker Lake in terms of participation, kids practicing, playing on our Sunday game days and things of that nature.

"The love of hockey has always existed in Baker Lake and that love continues today, possibly even more so."
