Boil water advisory in Rankin Rankin Inlet The territorial government issued a boil water advisory for Rankin Inlet on May 23 due to increased turbidity in the water. Residents were informed to bring their water to a rolling boil for at least a minute when using water for drinking, cooking, baby formula, and brushing teeth.

The advisory had yet to be lifted by press time.

Jake Pissuk's big trout wins at Rankin's fishing derby

Rankin Inlet's Jake Pissuk celebrated his 19th birthday with a $10,000 cheque after he caught the biggest fish over the May long weekend during the hamlet's annual trout derby.

Pissuk's family was one of 237 households to register for this year's derby, the same amount as last year.

The weather couldn't have been any better with temperSanikiluaq atures rising to the plus side and sun shining all weekend.

"People really enjoy it," said Susan Hickes, one of the founding committee members of the derby. "It brings friends and family together for the weekend. It's also an opportunity to pass on traditional knowledge on the land."

The only person to get a cheer louder than Pissuk at the crowded awards ceremony was 86-year-old Adele Kumaruaq Angidlik, who took home an $8,000 cheque for finishing second place with a 43-15/16inch fish.

The elder was all smiles as she received a standing ovation on her way to the podium.

Pissuk caught the 45-1/4inch fish the day after his birthday, near the end of a session that began at 6 a.m. and

ended at 10 p.m. on Peter Lake.

Pissuk kicked off the weekend with his mother, little brother, older sister and his brother-in-law at Peter Lake on Friday night. Although he didn't get a bite that night, he shot two caribou and a ptarmigan to mark his 19th birthday.

The following day, the Pissuks returned to Peter Lake to camp for the evening. After drilling his fourth hole, Pissuk got his first bite of the weekend at around 8 p.m. As soon as he felt the fish on the line, he could tell it was big.

As he started trying to pull it up, his jigger broke, which left him to pull up the line with his bare hands.

He finally brought it up to the hole after a fight, but the fish was so big he had to get his brother-in-law to chisel a bigger gap while Pissuk held the line.

After about 20 minutes, he finally pulled the beast from the water.

"I was just happy to see his face come up," Pissuk told Kivalliq News at the awards ceremony.

Pissuk said he was going to spend his birthday winnings on his family.

"Now I get to buy a new Honda for my mom."

Easter play back in Arviat Legacy of singer-songwriter Charlie Panigoniak celebrated

Arviat's drama program paid tribute to the legacy of Charlie Panigoniak by putting on a production of "An Easter Story" earlier this month featuring a score with music drawn from throughout his career.

The beloved Inuktitut singer-songwriter from Chesterfield Inlet passed away in February.

The play was first written and performed by John Arnalukjuak High School's longtime drama teacher Gord Billard and its former principal 15 years ago. It hadn't been performed since the debut a decade-and-a-half ago.

Panigoniak's music was played during scene changes, which also featured images of the original production being projected on TV screens.

"We played his music because he sang about families and the old times," said Billard. "This play had a lot of the themes related to that so that's why we decided to pay tribute to him."

The play follows the story

of a family whose eldest son is set to play Jesus in an upcoming Easter school play on the anniversary of the death of his brother. The main character John, has a crisis of faith when his pregnant mother ends up in a coma after getting into an snowmobile accident a few days before the play.

While he questions his belief in a higher power, he is visited by the spirit of his brother who passed away the previous Easter, who encourages him not to give up. In the end John's mother comes out of the coma and gives birth to her baby, and all ends well.

"They story is all about hope, which is what Easter is all about," said Billard.

Billard decided to resurrect the play this year because it has an Inuktitut script, which community members could understand and relate to. The school's Inuktitut teacher Meeka Nangmalik and math teacher Melinda Kaviok both helped students with their Inuktitut.

They even had small roles in the play as nurses.

back-to-back English and Inuktitut performances on May 15, with just a short break in between the two versions.

Another performance was done for students of the high school and middle school the following day.

"They had to master both of their languages and they pulled it off pretty well!" Billard said.

The play was originally supposed to be performed over Easter, but two of the main characters were badly

injured weeks before its opening. Both of them are currently recovering from their injuries in Winnipeg and are expected home in Arviat soon, which in itself is a miracle, according to Billard.

In the end, the lead role ended up being played by Russell Suluk, who originally played the role of the baby when the production was first put on 15 years ago.

"We thought that was a really cool full circle event," said Billard.

Kivalliq News acting editor Cody Punter spent three days camping on the land over the Victoria Day long weekend with Ashley Sandy, her husband Alfred Voisey and two of their boys. They snowmobiled halfway to Whale Cove from Rankin where they met up with Alfred's dad, Lewis, and some of his family members.

Although they didn't end up catching a prize winning fish everyone was happy to be able to spend time with family on the land.

Sharing stories, laughter and food on the land? Priceless!

It’s the time of year when the sun barely sets, the sea ice is slowly receding, and people across Nunavut are out on the land as much as possible.

Otherwise known as fishing derby season, the few weeks before and after the May Long weekend are some of the most cherished among Nunavummiut.

You only need to look at the pronounced tan lines that develop around people’s eyes to see just how much time people are actually spending on the land.

The fact there is big money on the line certainly keeps things exciting. Especially since getting out on the land isn’t cheap these days. You need a machine, qamutiik, gas, fishing gear, tents and sleeping bags.

Sanikiluaq That’s without mentioning groceries, clothes and all the other little things you need to pull off a successful trip.

But the derbies are also a reminder that there are some things that money can’t buy: quality family time on the land.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend the fishing derby with Ashley Sandy and Alfred Voisey and two of their younger sons, Drayden and Mikituq, as they camped out halfway between Whale Cove and Rankin for three nights.

I once spent 21 days living in a tent in Iceland during the summer.

Basketball showdown in Baker Lake

The 11th Kemp Angoyuaq Memorial honours memory of player who passed away in 2001

Baker Lake's Lightning defended their title against an experienced Rankin Inlet squad in the men's division at the Kemp Angoyuaq Memorial Basketball Tournament, held over the Victoria Day weekend.

"They were a competitive team that lost a tough game in the finals," said Gary Kennedy, an organizing committee member.

The tournament featured five teams in the men's division and four in the women's.

All teams were from Baker Lake, except for Rankin's men's team and a women's hybrid team made up of players from Coral Harbour and Whale Cove.

"We normally don't get three or four out-of-town teams ... but it seems we get one or two teams every year," said Kennedy.

The men's final started off really slow, with the Lightning ahead of Rankin 8-5 going into the first half.

Things loosened up in the second half as both teams found their feet and the net.

Rankin was able to get the lead for a little bit at one point but the Lightning came

back and took control and managed to hang on by three points with a final score of 29-26.

"It was tough for Rankin because a lot of Bakermiut were cheering the hometown team," said Kennedy.

On the women's side, Baker Lake's Warriors narrowly beat the Hurricanes 27-25 in another tight contest.

The two teams have battled it out a lot over the years but this was the first time the Warriors were able to beat their rivals.

The Warriors are a much younger team trying to establish themselves, whereas the Hurricanes are mostly veterans.

"For the Warriors to break through that was big," said Kennedy. "A few players from the Hurricanes even posted on Facebook saying congrats, you finally did it."

This year marked the 11th year the tournament has been held in honour of Kemp Angoyuaq, an avid basketball player from Baker Lake, who passed away while playing the game he loved in 2001.

The tournament has long been a popular feature in the community and tickets were sold out all weekend long.

Charged with dangerous driving Teenager on ATV fled from police twice in one day

RCMP have charged a Rankin Inlet man with the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle after he attempted to flee from police twice in one day.

On May 23, officers tried to perform a traffic stop on an all-terrain vehicle they believed was driving in a dangerous manner.

The driver was also not wearing a hel-

met, which is required by law.

Upon activating their lights and siren the ATV fled “at a high rate of speed and continued driving in a dangerous manner on densely populated streets,” according to an RCMP press release.

The release states that RCMP did not pursue the ATV. A short time later police located the same ATV and driver in another area of town and again the driver fled from police “in a dangerous and careless manner.”

The driver was later identified by RCMP who arrested him without incident at his residence later that night.

In their press release, RCMP warned residents to respect the rules of the road, especially with the warmer weather on its way.

“Rankin Inlet RCMP want to remind the public that unsafe operation of ATVs is taken seriously and those found driving in dangerous manner will be charged accordingly.”

MCpl. Eden Sammurtok-Kolola was awarded the Cadet’s leadership award during a ceremonial review earlier this month. She was also promoted in rank and was presented her new stripes by Patterk Netser, the minister of housing and Nunavut Arctic College.
