Board members sought Kivalliq Atuqtuarvik Corp. is looking to find a pair of committed individuals to fill two vacancies on its board of directors.

Candidates must be beneficiaries of the Nunavut Agreement and be at least 18 years of age to be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience and ability in business ownership or management, board experience and corporate governance, financial literacy, economic development and strategic planning and knowledge of financial services.

Candidates must also agree to undergo and pass both a security clearance and a credit check.

Anyone looking for more information on the two positions may contact the Atuqtuarvik Corp. in Rankin Inlet.

Deadline to apply is June 12.

Hunter harvesting Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Hunters and Trappers Organization board has announced harvesting is open for hunters for the following – 10 young seals $100; 10 adult seals $150; 21 total tuktu male adult three per hunter, $1000; arctic char $25, with 100 to be caught; ptarmigan $20 with 50 ptarmigan to be caught. Only those who signed up for harvesting are eligible to be paid.

Residents of Rankin Inlet are hoping an alternative solution can be found to Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) dumping the contents of a catchment pond into Meliadine Lake.

The pond at AEM's Meliadine gold Sanikiluaq mine contains about 18 months worth of rain water and melted snow and AEM has had an emergency amendment to its water licence approved by federal Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal allowing the company to release the water into Meliadine Lake from now until the end of October.

AEM reports the containment pond is at near capacity now, holding 650,000 cubic metres of water and the company expects the spring melt to bring an additional 450,000 cubic metres of water.

Although AEM's studies show the water is non-toxic and will not harm the marine environment, Rankin Inlet Mayor Harry Towtongie said many people in the community, especially elders, have grave concerns over the water being released into Meliadine Lake.

Towtongie said he's not a scientist but he has concerns over water being pumped back into Meliadine Lake for, as far as he's aware, the first time in the lake's existence.

He said the lake provides drinking water for most in the community and the action just doesn't sit right with many in Rankin Inlet.

"Agnico Eagle has always given us a head's-up on what they're doing, but it happened differently this time and I

don't think that can all be blamed on Covid-19," said Towtongie.

"This action was taken through HTOs (hunters and trappers organizations), KIA (Kivalliq Inuit Association), NTI (Nunavut Tunngavik Inc), the Nunavut Water Board and NIRB (Nunavut Impact Review Board) – it went through all those and the federal minister, while the community, itself, was among the last to hear about it.

"That just doesn't sit well with what people are going to think about it, especially our Elders, who are not happy about now having to drink water that has been pumped back into a lake that they've been using for so many years."

Towtongie said the community is hoping a better option will surface than dumping the water in Meliadine Lake.

"Maybe they can use the water in the pond, that they say is OK, for their own water needs at the mine instead of pumping it into the lake.

"We don't have an answer, but we're hoping something more viable will come up that's different from what they're planning now. We, as a community, are hoping for a different solution.

"This is something that should have went to community consultation, which didn't happen because of Covid-19, but I still feel they should have done a radio show and taken other steps to inform the community as to what was going on.

"We need the jobs and everything, so we need to support the mine. But, at the same time, they need to be transparent with us and what they plan to do with our lake isn't sitting well right now and we're hoping they'll give us another option."

It's downright scary how much goes on in the world these days without the general public being aware of it and Canada is no exception.

Covid-19 has been a wakeup call on a number of different fronts and our own apathy towards what goes on in this country until it's too late is prime among them.

Couple that with the cracks in our food chain that the virus has also uncovered and some things become mind-blowingly surreal very quickly.

Food insecurity is very real for many families in Nunavut and a number of people here usually Sanikiluaq clamour quite loudly when one of our few grocery outlets dump food items that the public views as still being usable.

I've been following our supplyand-demand trail quite closely during this pandemic, mostly focusing on how the essential goods we require continue to make it to store shelves during a time of quarantines, isolation and public restrictions.

That curiosity (the curse and blessing of all writers) took me in a totally different direction this past week; one that had me shaking my head in disbelief and feeling not so great about being a card-carrying member of the human race once again.

Praising community efforts Mayor proud of year-round effort by Rankin Inlet volunteers

Rankin Inlet is a model of consistency when it comes to rising up and meeting any challenge, said its mayor.

Harry Towtongie said he's never seen a group of people put things together so smoothly as what the community has in place should Covid-19 ever invade Rankin.

He said it's nothing short of impressive when you see the new arena set to see duty as a field hospital, the drop-in centre to be used as a screening unit, beds available for those stricken with the virus at Keewatin Hall and Nanuq Lodge and the list goes on.

"It took a lot of work on some people's part, but everyone came together so well and it all went so smoothly that it almost seemed easy, but it certainly wasn't," said Towtongie.

"It was really something to see so many volunteers take time off from their busy schedules to make a community as ready as it can be, especially one lacking the resources it should have in dealing with this kind of pandemic.

"We were so proud to see all this happen.

Even when the original plan was in place, as an ongoing thing, they kept coming back to do more and help more, including gathering extra food and distributing it around the community.

"It's awesome, this place."

Towtongie said it was evident during the planning for Covid-19 the strength the community has through its solid base of volunteers.

He said the work never stops in Rankin for supporting hockey, soccer, volleyball and numerous other sports and activities.

"It's amazing all the money they raise in support of different things in Rankin and the number of volunteers who come out to run bingo games and help with the various sporting events and hamlet activities.

Mayor Harry Towtongie said the community's strong base of volunteers came in handy when planning defences against Covid-19 for Rankin Inlet.

"It's ongoing every year, all the time, in our community and the volunteers did everything we needed in case Covid-19 made it here. They just did it like clockwork.

"Everyone who needed to get together – all the important people like the healthcare workers, firefighters, RCMP and people from Nunavut Literacy – they came together, brought everything they needed together

Towtongie said Rankin Inlet often sets the example for other communities to follow, especially when it comes to tough decisions that need to be made.

He said Rankin is known for standing by the decisions it makes and working tirelessly to ensure those decisions work for the best of the community.

"People looking in – especially around the North – see this community takes the risk of making decisions that are tough sometimes and others follow suit.

"We follow what other communities are doing well and learn from them, as well.

"That's so important for us as both a regional leader and the transportation hub of the Kivalliq and many parts of Nunavut."

Rankin GeneXpert ready to go GN expected to release its reopening plan this week

People around the Kivalliq may soon find some of Nunavut's restrictions surrounding Covid-19 eased as a result of Rankin Inlet now having a GeneXpert approved, giving Nunavut the ability to more quickly analyze Covid-19 tests.

The announcement was made on Thursday, May 21, during which chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson said in a press release that the Rankin machine – combined with a GeneXpert machine in Iqaluit – now gives the Government of Nunavut (GN) the ability to meet its in-territory diagnostic capacity.

Patterson said a nasal swab can be analyzed in less than 45 minutes by the machine and the ability for rapid testing was a top priority in the GN's Covid-19 response plan.

"When coupled with the fact that we still have no confirmed cases of Covid19 inside the territory, we have now met two of our three conditions," said Dr. Patterson.

"While the situation in southern Canada will continue to play a role in our approach moving forward, we are now in a better position to consider reducing some restrictions in the territory."

In addition to greatly reducing its turn-around time on swab results, the GN will continue to send the Covid-19 test results to labs in the south to have them double checked.

Premier Joe Savikataaq says with GeneXpert up-and-running in Rankin Inlet, the GN will announce its reopening plans this week.

He said that didn't happen because the GN was still finalizing some elements to ensure the safety and well-being of Nunavummiut and the reopening plan will be unveiled this week.

"Covid-19 fatigue is real, but that doesn't mean we should let down our guards or ease up on the good work we're

all doing," said Savikataaq.

"If anything, Nunavut's measures show that staying attentive works!

"Being tired or bored doesn't mean this pandemic is over or that we should take it easy.

I'm recommitting to working hard and staying strong.

"We all need to do this together to keep our communities safe. Let's have each other's backs and be responsible for one another."
