Rankin Inlet is mourning the loss of its beloved mayor, Robert Janes.

After a lengthy battle, Janes succumbed to cancer on May 15 while receiving treatment in Winnipeg.

"He was all about helping people.

His vested interest was in the people of Rankin Inlet," said SAO Justin Merritt.

Janes served six years as mayor and was approaching the end of his second three-year term this fall.

Before that, he was the hamlet's

SAO and a councillor for a number of terms.

"I knew him pretty well. We were on council for six years," said Merritt. "We didn't always agree on everything but we had a common goal to help the community."

Merritt said Janes came up to Rankin after stints with the Hudson's Bay Company in Grise Fiord and Pond Inlet.

As mayor, Janes was always trying to help the community.

Throughout his career he fought to provide better infrastructure to the people of Rankin.

"One of his big things was getting a new arena and getting a new hamlet building. He was also an advocate for having increased capacity for elders' care. The community wants it so bad. To have one for Rankin was one of his priorities."

Outside of politics Janes ran a popular fishing tackle shop from his house. He was also a huge supporter of the cadets.

"I'd have a hard time to find something bad to say about him," said Merritt. "He was just one of those guys that always tried his hardest."

The fastest snowmobiler in the Kivalliq Chesterfield Inlet Rankin Inlet's Tristan Dias earned the title of the fastest man on a snowmobile in the Kivalliq after winning back-to-back titles in two different communities this month.

Dias came first in the Kivalliq Challenge in Rankin Inlet on the first weekend in May and the Igluligaaqjuk Snowmobile Races in Chesterfield Inlet the following weekend.

Chesterfield Inlet's annual race resumed after a two-year hiatus due to a lack of funding. A $30,000 contribution from the Chesterfield Inlet Development Corporation, as well as support from Calm Air and KIA, made it possible to organize the races.

During the Igluligaaqjuk junior races, racers completed 10 and 12 laps of a 2.2-mile course.

In the highly competitive senior division, the 20 races were divided into two qualifying heats with eight laps.

Anyone who didn't make it went to a last-chance qualifier, with the top four advancing to the 12-lap semis. The final featured 12 racers fighting it out over the course of 10 laps, with Dias being crowned the champion.

Iqaluit The Kivalliq had a strong showing at the territorial volleyball championships in Iqaluit earlier this month.

In the senior men's division, Naujaat ended up taking home the silver, falling to Iqaluit in the final.

Meanwhile in the girls' 18-U division, Rankin Inlet also ended up winning silver, with Iqaluit taking gold.

Rankin Inlet, Naujaat, Baker Lake and Arviat were all competing at the tournament, which featured both men's and women's teams in senior and 18-U categories.

Arviat man sleds to Rankin Inlet for dental treatment Daniel Alagalak hopes trip exposes lack of health services in small communities

An Arviat man, who rode a snowmobile seven hours to Rankin Inlet to have an infected tooth removed after his local dentist was unable to provide treatment, is hoping his story will shine light on the limited access to basic services across Nunavut.

"We sometimes face challenges with unbearable pain that can be treated," said Daniel Alagalak. "I'm hoping that other people in authority will learn where we're at right now for our territory."

Speaking to Kivalliq News in Rankin Inlet — 215 kilometres on a map from Arviat — Alagalak explained his saga started three weeks ago, when he began feeling extreme pain due to an infected tooth.

He went to the heath centre in Arviat, who told him the only dentist in town works at the school.

"They told me to go the

dentist at the elementary school. I went to him and he said he couldn't take my tooth out because he didn't have the necessary tools to perform (the operation)," said Alagalak. "The best he could do was give me some pills to help with the infection."

The pills ran out after a week. When he went to get a new prescription Alagalak learned the dentist was now on vacation.

"When the dentist gave me pills I wasn't as swollen. But when the pills ran out the pain came back. It became unbearable."

He then asked the health centre if he could be sent to another community for treatment but was told the government wouldn't cover the cost of his travel.

As a last resort he called the dentist in Rankin to see when they would be coming to Arviat next. When he found out it wouldn't be until June 20, Alagalak decided to take matters into his own hands.

"Once I got word they

couldn't cover for my travels I decided to head out by snowmobile," he said. "After waiting three weeks with my infected tooth. I'd had enough, I couldn't take it any longer."

Alagalak took the week off work and left first thing on the morning of May 13.

It took almost eight hours for him to arrive in Rankin due to partial white out conditions. By the next day he was able to see the dentist, who was able to remove the tooth within 10 minutes.

"I gave her a big hug. I was really happy after all that journey," said Alagalak.

Alagalak originally considered flying to Rankin but ended up going by sled because it would only cost him a few hundred dollars in gas. Considering how much pain he was in before the tooth was removed, Alagalak said the trip was worth it for him.

"I'm hoping that things will improve so that other people won't have to go what I had to go through."

First, I went back to Whale Cove.

With the help of my friend and interpreter Suzie Napayok-Short, I had Ulukhaktok the chance to interview some of the community's first inhabitants who arrived in the late 1950s at a time when Inuit were being relocated by the Canadian government. Hearing them recount the hardships they overcame and the enduring love for Gameti their families and the land was an extremely humbling experience.

Given that his brother Jordin, the first Inuk to play in the NHL, would be playing in the tournament for the first time and that this was the last one to be played in Rankin's old rink before the community moves into a new one next year, the moment was all the more special.

On my first day back last week, I had to file a street talk feature, which meant going out to find people to talk to. At the airport I saw some more familiar faces as well as some new ones. The last two of the six people I ended up photographing were both mothers on their way back to Coral Harbour.

I photographed each of them with their children. After a brief but pleasant conversation they asked me when they would be able to see their picture in the newspaper.

It felt good to be back in familiar territory.

Cadets honour elder Issaluk Northern News Services

Rankin Inlet's cadets held their 32nd annual ceremonial review on May 10.

The cadets showed off their skills in a variety of disciplines in front of a crowd of family and friends. The regiment was reviewed by Patterk Netser, Minister of Housing and Nunavut Arctic College.

He also took time to talk with each of the cadets as he inspected their uniforms.

One notable absence from the ceremony was elder Tukipkutak Louisa Ivasaaq Issaluk, who passed away in April.

Issaluk was one of original elders who volunteered with

the group in 2008, credited with being a driving force to make sure kids spoke Inutkitut.

There was an empty seat left for Issaluk and several speeches were made in her honour.

Dorothy Tootoo told Kivalliq News that Issaluk and the other corps elders referred to themselves as "Tukipkutak."

"It's something that you usually put on the edge of a lake to indicate a cache."

She recalled when they joined they said "we want to be more than just a corps elder. We want to a beacon for these kids."

Rankin Inlet falls to Iqaluit in senior soccer on Mother's Day Tight finish capped off exciting weekend at first women's only senior tournament

Team Rankin Inlet dropped a tough loss to the Iqaluit Vixens in the final of the first women's-only senior soccer tournament on Mother's Day earlier this month.

Team Rankin was one of three from the community to take part in the territory's first senior soccer tournament to be held exclusively for women.

Whale Cove and Iqaluit also sent teams to the tournament, which was organized by local women after Coral Harbour's Rick Ningeocheak

tournament – featuring both men's and women's teams – was played for the final time last season at the request of the family.

When the senior men put together a new tournament for themselves, the women decided to start one of their own.

"They had one and we wanted to do one for women too," said Keisha Aliyak.

"This is they first year we're doing the tournament so it's good that we got five teams and two from other communities."

Fundraising hurdles meant the tournament was pushed back from its original date in

April to May. The tournament ended up being unintentionally scheduled on the Mother's Day weekend, which was fitting considering about 90 per cent of the women playing were mothers, according to Aliyak.

"I think these mothers spent the day well doing something they loved." said Aliyak, who would have been playing herself if she weren't four months pregnant.

The final saw an exciting showdown between Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet. Iqaluit jumped out to an early threegoal lead just a few minutes into the game. Rankin held

off the sustained pressure for most of the half until Tamara Amarok broke the shut-out with 4:30 left.

After half-time, Rankin came out flying with two quick goals by Catherine Ayarok and Amy Kaludjak to tie things up. That got the crowd into the game and the crowd started cheering: "Let's go Rankin, let's go!"

Moments later Rankin's Molly Aggart scored two more to give her team five unanswered goals and a twogoal lead. But the lead didn't last and with five minutes left the games was tied 5-5. Rankin conceded a penalty shot

with three minutes left and their goalie came up with a huge save. Just a minute later Iqaluit's Kiah Hachey scored her third goal of the game for a hat-trick and the eventual game winner.

Rankin Inlet captain Amy Kaludjak said this tournament was the first time her team had the chance to play together.

"We felt pretty confident

as long as we could keep the momentum going," she said.

"But we were really burnt out from our semi against Whale Cove."

Whale Cove won the bronze medal game against the Rankin Inlet Bellas 7-4.

Aliyak said she hopes Rankin will host the women's tournament again next season.

"I want to play next year," she said.
