Students in Chesterfield Inlet receive items from Australian 'Uncle Bob'

Students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet recently received the latest box of generous goodies from one of the school's longtime benefactors, Australia's (Uncle) Bob Carveth.

Carveth, better known as Uncle Bob to more than a decade of students in Chesterfield Inlet, first became involved with Inuit students because he wanted to do anything he could to help impress upon them the importance of preserving their Inuktitut language after seeing the destruction of many languages in his home country.

He first hooked up with then VSS principal Allan Pitcher around 2009.

Pitcher was a big-time advocate of VSS and the students who attended and it wasn't long before he had Carveth hooked on how cool both VSS and its students truly are.

When Pitcher's tenure at the school ended, teacher Glen Brocklebank picked up the friendship with Carveth and the Australian has been a steady contributor

to the school and its students ever since, sending everything from cameras and flashlights to toothbrushes and genuine kangaroo fur.

He once paid $500 for a student breakfast at VSS and he also sent a little robot that students were able to program.

Brocklebank said Uncle Bob, now 78, has been back on somewhat of a roll for the past six months, or so.

He said the Australian's latest contributions were the hats he sent for younger students at VSS and pen knives for six senior students this past month.

"I know he subscribes to the Kivalliq News and he loves to keep up with everything that goes on at the school through that and his chats with me," said Brocklebank.

"We mention Uncle Bob a lot in class because he's usually sending things and he's had a few contests for us too.

"He had a Cinderella contest for the school this past year and, this year, he had a wolf-drawing contest for the kids who wanted to do it.

"We had close to 30 entries into the contest and we sent them all to him. He loved them all and sent a

wolf sweater to our contest winner, Joye Tautu and a little wolf pin to all the other participants."

Brocklebank said students at VSS view Uncle Bob as this cool guy who sends them stuff.

He said the students also perceive the Australian as someone who would genuinely like to see them succeed.

"Uncle Bob is a huge proponent for language. He used to call during class time and some of the kids have had really long conversations with him.

"He sent Donald Mullins a kangaroo skin a few years back because Donald once had about a 20-minute conversation with him over the phone on what he was doing and what he was interested in.

"We now have second generation Uncle Bob kids here at VSS and it would be a pretty long list if I compiled one on everything he's sent to students at VSS over the years.

"Uncle Bob is really is a cool dude among VSS students and, usually, when they see something come from him they say it's a super-cool item and they're happy and grateful to receive whatever Uncle Bob sends their way."

Community gatherings like the ones for the annual Easter Eggstravaganza may not be seen in Rankin Inlet for awhile yet as the Government of Nunavut has extended the public health emergency concerning Covid-19 until May 28.

Precautions against Covid-19 extended Kivalliq/Nunavut The Government of Nunavut (GN) has extended the public health emergency concerning Covid-19 until May 28.

In other news concerning Covid-19, Premier Joe Savikataaq took the time in his address to the territory on May 14 to remind all Nunavummiut that the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit program, also called CERB, is a federal program to ensure that people who have been financially impacted by Covid-19 have access to emergency funds to cover bills and stay above water.

"This is not free money," said Savikataaq in his address.

"It is considered income. It is a taxable benefit intended to help people who have been laid off, or whose employment has been impacted because of the pandemic.

"If your circumstances have not changed because of Covid-19, please don't access this program. If you are not eligible for this program, you will likely have to pay some or all of it back in the future."

Busy society gives thanks Baker Lake Volunteerism was front and centre again in aiding the Abluqta Society to give out 120 bags of food to those in need in Baker Lake this past Friday, May 14.

In addition to its volunteers, the society also wishes to thank the Baker Lake volunteer firefighters who donated their time and their truck to deliver food to elders who could not pick it up.

Abluqta also acknowledges and thanks Agnico Eagle for its funding of the food bank.

Summer jobs for students

Kivalliq Kivalliq students are reminded that the Government of Nunavut (GN) has numerous summer job opportunities available in the region to help students learn new skills and gain valuable work experience.

The Summer Student Employment Equity program is offered every year to secondary and post-secondary students to encourage continuous learning and foster skill and career development.

There was no shortage of smiling faces after 50 kids received brand-new bicycles in Rankin Inlet this past week courtesy of the hamlet.

Rankin recreation co-ordinator David Clark said the hamlet wanted to do something to brighten the kids' days a bit, with so many activities being cancelled that usually would have been held in connection with Pakallak Tyme.

He said the cancelling of activities Sanikiluaq and the constant practising of social distancing has been hard on everyone during the past few months, with the younger set of the community being particularly hard hit by not being able to spend much time playing with their friends.

"We thought it would be a great thing to do to help out a bit, you know, so the hamlet went ahead and bought a bunch of bikes to give away to some of the youth in our community," said Clark.

"We didn't really have a plan on how we were going to do this or anything, so I just got it done.

"We probably would have held a draw during Pakallak Tyme or at the start of the fishing derby – anytime we would have had a big gathering – but with no big gatherings being allowed yet, I had to get a bit creative."

The hamlet managed to come up with new bikes to put a smile on the faces of 50 lucky youths in the community.

Clark said the bicycles were available to be won by kids aged five to 10 who had their names pulled in a draw held at Rankin's new arena this past Thursday, May 14.

"If I'm able to find more available funding, the hamlet wants to do this type of thing more-and-more often as we move forward because we want to help keep our kids active and give them something to do.

"I think it's important we try to give the youth in our community a positive outlook on things, at least as much as we can, and, for a little kid, winning a brand-new bike is a pretty big deal."

Clark said in awarding the bicycles, the hamlet set up things similar to what one might expect to see at a penny sale.

He said the 50 bikes all stood shining in a straight line, with bags placed on the handlebars for each child to have one of their three free tickets deposited in.

"One of their three tickets was placed in the bag of a bike they hoped to win during the draw," explained Clark.

"Just in case someone was having a really, really lucky day, no kid was allowed to win more than one bike.

"We were practising social distancing throughout the whole process, so we had the parents come in one door and out the other to sign up their kids for the draw.

"They knew what size bike their kids would need and, maybe, what kind of style of bike they would like if they won."

One weird hockey day in Kuujjuaq Northern News Services

First off I'd like to thank everyone for the comments, thoughts and plain-old fun of reliving some most excellent Kivalliq hockey moments from a piece I penned this past month (Ref recalls special moments in Kivalliq hockey, Kivalliq News, April 9).

And, I must admit, at the time I penned the ditty, I never considered including funny, strange, bizarre or just plain weird moments I witnessed either in Kivalliq arenas or playing with a Kivalliq team during my first three years living in Rankin Inlet.

I'll start with a story that features a man I considered to be a very Sanikiluaq good friend of mine – who the good Lord called home way too soon earlier this month – Louie Tattuinee.

I was playing goal for a Rankin team that flew to a tournament in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, in 1999 and, to say we were a little overmatched at the event would be being quite kind to us.

However, we were a Rankin Inlet team, damn it and when the quar-

ter finals rolled around we were still mutter, "No, he wouldn't ..." when the Pang captain knocked down standing and in tough against a the pass up the middle and rifled very good Pangnirtung squad.

Believe me when I tell you folks, it behind me before I got past my disbelief. we played the game of our lives The Pang players were celebratagainst that team and were leading 2-1 with only about seven min- ing when Louie (Tattuinee) showed up out of nowhere right in utes left to go when Pang front of me; his face only dumped the puck into our inches from mine, his end on a line change. eyes the size of golf balls A guy, I don't recall and through clenched his name, we picked teeth he hissed, "I was up because Joachim gonna punch him right in Ayaruak felt sorry for him the mouth." when only six players A few minutes later, from his team showed up with Pang now up by for the tourney, ended up Darrell two, I went to our bench with the puck behind our Greer on a timeout. Louie was net. sitting next to the guy There was one Pang on the bench as I leaned on the player, their captain, deep in our end, standing low in the slot to put boards looking at all the dejected pressure on whichever winger our faces.

Louie turned to the guy calm guy made an outlet pass to along and sincere, like they were two the boards – but oh did our guy buddies having a beer together have different ideas!

He looked over at one of our wing- and gently inquired, "So, hockey's ers Andy Aliyak, nodded toward cen- not your first sport, eh?"

I was Louie's friend for life right tre ice and hollered, "Go!" My mind had just enough time to then, right there.

Australia's Uncle Bob Carveth has been sending gifts of all shapes and sizes to students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet for more than a decade.

Carveth first got interested in the students at VSS through his love of language and he has been a benefactor to the school while encouraging the students to do their part in protecting the Inuktitut language ever since.

Remembering the perfect storm Little goes right on Arviat teacher's trip home for death in the family

The cycle of life came calling on Arviat's Gord Billard in midDecember 2019, when the amicable teacher and well-known play director took a deep breath and resigned himself to the fact he was going home to Newfoundland to bury his father, Maxwell, 81, in his home community of Conception Bay South.

After being trapped in Arviat for a few days following his dad's passing on Dec. 8, 2019, the weather finally cleared and he was on his way to take care of one of the saddest chores of his life.

A well-grounded man by anyone's standards, Billard, nonetheless, was a little shaken by his father's passing, despite the fact he was terminally ill at the time.

"I thought we had several more months before that was going to happen, so it did, in fact, take me more than a little off guard," said Billard.

"Dad died on a Sunday afternoon and it was the following Wednesday before I could get out of Arviat, but, for the two days I was trapped by the blizzard, I was on the phone with my brother and sister trying to help them make funeral arrangements.

"I was completely distraught over them having to handle everything in my absence and, I also had Keith Collier, who was in Arviat to do some work with the hamlet in his role as a consultant, under my roof at the time all this came down.

"With all this going on at the same time, I found it very hard to breathe in that kind of situation."

There was another nasty surprise awaiting Billard shortly after his arrival in Newfoundland, when

Equipment operators were kept busy on main highways and local town streets following a major snow storm Arviat's Gord Billard ran into when he returned to Newfoundland in December of 2019. one of the worst storms in anyone's recent memory pounded the island mercilessly.

Billard said, after the funeral, he and his family were dealing with all sorts of legal issues that came about with having their father's will probated.

He said, at the time, everyone was just glad there was nothing else they had to fit on their plates.

"That's when 'Snowmageddon' hit," lamented Billard, an image of a white flag being raised seemingly accompanying his words.

"So, everything I was trying to get done was delayed, extending my stay in Newfoundland to the point where I ended up going beyond the bereavement leave I was allowed.

"I had to dip into my sick/stress leave in order to stick around for a few more weeks and see through all the meetings and paperwork with the legal issues, at least to the point where I could take off and return to Arviat.

"But, before that happened the storm hit and 'Snowmageddon' was certainly the biggest storm I've ever seen in my lifetime in Newfoundland."

Billard said at the storm's height the accumulation of snow and the intensity of the wind had the window in his living room actually bending in and out.

He said the ferocity of the storm had him staying up at night to peer out a window in total awe

of its power.

"It was an intense time. There's no doubt about that.

"I was lucky to have relatives nearby who were ready to take me in had I lost the power or been forced from my home but, thankfully, it never reached that point."

Billard said the blizzard was the first time that St. John's and the surrounding area was in a state of emergency and shutdown for such a long period of time.

He said no one was allowed out of their home for more than a week and emergency vehicles were the only ones allowed on city streets.

"Many people who didn't stock up significantly before the storm hit found themselves in dire situations

without food and other essentials.

"They had to start opening up pharmacies a few days into the storm because so many people were caught without enough of their necessary medications to see them through.

"The constant coverage of the storm by the media was much the same as Covid-19 is now, in that there was nowhere you could turn to get away from it.

"The attention it garnered nationally and internationally was one of the things that made me realize just how historic and monumental the event was – this storm was making news all around the world due to its size and intensity which, in my books did, indeed, make it a storm of a lifetime."
