Fond farewell Baker Lake A parade of residents honked their horns in tribute as they passed in front of the Kreuger residence this past week, honouring the couple for their 27-years worth of dedication to the community of Baker Lake.

Jim was a teacher in Baker for the 27 years, while Laurel managed the prenatal nutrition program.

Jim was also extremely well known for his time spent as a coach and executive member of the Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association.

The couple are scheduled to leave Baker tomorrow, June 11.

'We must do better' Kivalliq Nunavut Minister of Family Services Elisapee Sheutiapik issued a press release this past week to mark the one-year anniversary of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Final Report and Calls for Justice.

The report highlighted the painful experiences of violence and racism against Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ and two-spirit people for all Canadians to absorb.

Sheutiapik said, in the release, that the Government of Nunavut (GN) continues to work with its Inuit, provincial, territorial and federal partners to take steps to address the important issues identified in the MMIWG Final Report and Calls for Justice.

She said it is important that everyone recognizes there is always more that can be done and that they speak-up about the injustices they experience and witness around them.

"We must do better," said Sheutiapik.

"We need to recognize the pain, trauma and grief that communities experience when faced with systemic racism and discrimination.

"We must speak boldly and with courage, with a collaborative voice to support resilience and advocacy to supporting inclusion, diversity and equity.

"These values are explicitly highlighted in Inuit societal values and those principles help us honour all people."

Covid update: GN workers return Kivalliq GN employees who had been working from home returned to their workplaces this past Monday, June 8.

The announcement was made via press release this past week by Minister of Human Resources Lorne Kusugak.

Kusugak said the decision was made in consultation with the Public Health team and the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).

He said the GN recognizes that a healthy workplace is essential to the health and well-being of all employees, enabling them to bring their essential talents, skills and energy as they deliver services to Nunavummiut.

"In support of a safe and healthy workplace, the GN is following WSCC guidelines on risk assessment and worksite precautions and will continue to follow all orders and restrictions set in place by the chief public health officer in response to Covid-19." said Kusugak.

"GN employees will also continue to receive health and safety information and guidelines on an ongoing basis.

"The GN's Employee and Family Assistance Program is also available to support the overall well-being of GN employees and their families.

"We realize that with school closures and the uncertainty of summer day camps programs at this time, parents will need time to work out childcare options and, therefore, we encourage them to contact their immediate supervisors to discuss their options."

Second intake of RCMP program to be held in Rankin Inlet

The second intake of a recruitment program aimed at increasing the number of Inuit officers within the ranks of the RCMP in Nunavut may be coming to Rankin Inlet during the spring of 2021, said a staff sergeant within the force.

Denis Lambe, who has supervised the recruiting section for the past three years, said the program, which began in Iqaluit earlier this year, was unprecedented across the country and is now an example of a positive recruiting strategy not only for Inuit in Nunavut, but for First Nations as well.

He said having been in Nunavut for the past 25 years – 18 of them as an RCMP officer – he couldn't help but notice the force isn't recruiting any Inuit within its ranks.

"Every commanding officer down to every officer and the Government of Nunavut (GN) keeps saying we have to recruit more, we have to recruit more, but we were trying to recruit more using the same strategies with the same barriers and downfalls," said Lambe.

"We haven't had an Inuk RCMP officer go through Depot since 2003.

"I had a young officer over in Baker Lake named Dmitri Malakhov – I was his field coach when he joined the RCMP years ago – who I brought in to help me get the new program off the ground and David Aglukark has been handling the actual recruitment process side of things.

"I reviewed what we did years ago,

in 2001 and 2002, when we had some successful Inuit candidates join the force and I saw they were getting some assistance to raise their ability to pass the RCMP exam, which is the biggest barrier we have because people just can't get past it to advance to the following stages."

Lambe said recruits in 2001 and 2002 were allowed to continue on even if they didn't pass the RCMP exam and they all passed everything thrown at them in Depot.

He said today's hierarchy in the RCMP wouldn't exempt new recruits from the RCMP exam, so a new way had to be found to help them advance.

"So we set up a new program in Iqaluit this year. We were hoping for 20 Inuit recruits to sign up and we ended up with 11.

"We had the Nunavut Literacy Council design a program to specifically help the young recruits pass our exam.

"Everyone failed the exam the first time they wrote it but, after they had a chance to do more work on the program and get a bit more training, every single one of them passed the exam.

"So we're confident when we run this program again, we'll have the same result."

Lambe said they lost the majority of their candidates in the first intake for various reasons and now have two remaining who are waiting for their chance at passing Depot.

He said both remaining candidates, one male and one female, are from the Kivalliq region and he hopes hosting

the second intake for the recruitment program in Rankin Inlet will get even more Inuit interested in the opportunity.

"Depot will be spooling back up in a month or so, with a very limited number of candidates going through, so I'm hopeful our two remaining candidates from our first program will get the chance to go through sometime in the early fall.

"Pujjuut Kusugak, who taught the first segment designed by the Nunavut Literacy Council, will also be teaching the course in Rankin Inlet and Adriana Kusugak will be heavily involved, as well.

"We couldn't be doing this without the support of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., which funded the bulk of this whole thing and the GN's Family Services came on board in a big way and helped us with some funding.

"We had to go out and find external funding for this program, so without their help this whole thing would never have happened.

"We're looking at whether the RCMP can fund this moving forward but it doesn't look that way, so we're going to continue going out and beating the drum to keep this going on an annual basis and, hopefully, we can get the numbers back up to where we need them to be."

Time to cut back on cops?

There are few better examples of the complexities involved with policing than the differences of opinion we're seeing on the need for police forces going forward and the amount of money that should be invested in them.

Indeed across much of Canada and the United States right now, the cry to defund policing is gaining momentum following the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in the States and Regis KorchinskiPaquet in Canada this past month.

Defunding police would see money used for policing, instead, go towards funding services that focus on mental health and social supports.

Under this method instead of calling for police officers who are poorly equipped to deal with Sanikiluaq matters born of mental health and poverty issues, for example, people would have special emergency response numbers that would see someone arrive on scene who is trained in de-escalation.

Brightening up the landscape School gets new mural; students get backpacks in Chesterfield Inlet

It was a busy period for teacher Ana Leishman before she and her husband and fellow teacher Glen Brocklebank headed south with their family for a year on deferredsalary leave.

Leishman managed to finally put the finishing touches on a mural on the wall of the elementary side of Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) in Chesterfield Inlet in the nick of time.

An original mural she had done, which she wasn't entirely happy with but was still sad to see it go, had been painted over about five years ago when VSS received a facelift.

Leishman said she had sketched the new mural in pencil this past October but the school year turned out to be quite busy, which prevented her from getting back to it.

She said it wasn't until the final few days of the school year before she was able to finally finish the mural on May 29.

"I changed it up a bit at the last minute and Glen was able to put some Plexiglass around it and that's really what keeps something like this lasting

longer," said Leishman.

"The elementary side now looks so welcoming and inviting and there's something there for the kids to look at now.

"It's one of those things where you just want to help make the school feel more like a place where the kids want to be.

"Obviously we like putting up the kids' work because any kid likes to see their things up on the wall, but it's nice to have something welcoming like this up there, as well."

Leishman said the family didn't move south for a year because they needed a break from Chesterfield Inlet or anything of that nature.

She said they took the year away from the community to be near their aging parents.

"We had some scares this year, with my mom having a kidney removed just this past April.

"We had it planned for awhile to take this time and be down there for a little bit with them, but our hearts are always in Chester and it was very hard to leave this year.

"We have our best friends up here. When leaving it's like you're bawling on the plane and the flight attendant asks if you need a tissue and you manage to get out a no.

"We'll be going back the following year. There was never any question of that."

Leishman had one final duty to take care of at VSS before leaving. She had to pass out the backpacks donated by Northern Canada Mini Projects to students from kindergarten to Grade 4.

She said as the pandemic

was spreading and schools were just starting to be closed, the decision was made to carry on the project that she and Northern Canada Mini Projects had begun the year before.

"The folks at Northern Canada Mini Projects get prepared months in advance of a project, so they were

all set to go. The kids get their backpack and they look inside to find a pair of socks and, possibly, some crayons to colour with, a little workbook, a colouring book and some summer fun stuff like sunglasses and skipping rope.

"All I do is give a first name and a grade and the people donating the back-

packs pick the stuff to put inside them.

"The (Covid-19) restrictions had just been changed to allow gatherings of up to 25, so we had them gather outside VSS to get their backpacks and we were still able to follow all the health advisories still in place against Covid-19."

Hooked on a feeling in Rankin Annual fishing derby goes well despite storm

The annual Rankin Inlet Fishing Derby went off without a hitch from May 15 to 18, despite a different approach due to restrictions in connection with the ongoing Covid-19 situation.

Young fisher Troy Kaludjak took top spot and its $10,000 prize for his catch measuring 45.5 inches, while Solomon Ford and Iris Tatty-Tanuyak tied for second ($7,000 each) with their catches of 44 7/8 inches and Oscar Airut claimed fourth place ($5,000) at 44 5/8 inches.

Rounding out the winners were Amber Irwin in fifth place ($4,000) at 44.5 inches, Nathaniel Kaludjak in sixth ($3,000) at 44 inches, Richard Nattar in seventh ($2,000) at 43 13/16 inches and Chris Eccles in eighth place ($1,000) at 43 1/8

inches.

Derby committee member Susan Hickes said the derby went well despite a blizzard keeping fishers in their tents for most of Saturday, May 16, while out on the land at their favourite fishing holes.

She said the prize presentations took a lot less time than they did in previous years.

"We usually have an annual gathering at the Singiittuq Complex to award all the prizes, but we couldn't do that due to Covid-19 this year," said Hickes.

"We did all the prize presentations via Facebook live and over local radio this year and it went really, really fast.

"It usually takes a couple of hours to present all the prizes during the gathering but, this year, with only four of us there, the winner would come, claim their prize, have a pic-

ture taken, be congratulated and leave.

"So it only took us about 45 minute this year."

Hickes said the measuring also went quite fast this year, despite the weather being awful.

She said everything moved along smoothly with no crowds gathered around the measuring tables.

"People would just pull up, have their fish measured and go, so it certainly seemed to be a lot faster.

"Everyone seemed really happy with how it all went except for the blizzard on Saturday.

"We were out at Peter Lake and we couldn't see anything. We were stuck in our tent all morning and a bit in the afternoon.

"It was pretty much over by suppertime and after that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the derby."
