Giving a little back at barbecue People brave mosquito onslaught to attend SAR event in Rankin

A solid crowd of people braved a swarm of big, hungry mosquitoes to take part in a meet-and-greet barbecue sponsored by the local search-and-rescue (SAR) committee in Rankin Inlet last week.

SAR chairperson and search organizer Wesley Innukshuk said the event was held on July 25 the previous year and organizers want to make the gathering an annual event.

He said the barbecue will be back in 2020, but organizers have decided to hold the event in June next year due to the number of mosquitoes that plagued the event this year.

"We were more than pleased with the turnout we had, especially with the number of mosquitoes that were flying around during the whole time," said Innukshuk.

"There are lots of mosquitoes around this year and they're big and hungry."

Innukshuk said the barbecue brings more recognition to the local SAR, and the Coast Guard members in Rankin Inlet until late in the fall, and the services they provide, plus it's one small way of giving a little back to the community for its continued support of the SAR and its operations.

He said when there's a search going on people often give things to the searchers, such as extra clothing or extra food for when they go out on the land, and the SAR wants the community to know how much that's appreciated.

"We had hoped to do more things at the barbecue this year, like hold some different games and things, but our budget just didn't allow for it.

"Hopefully, we'll have a little extra funding that will allow us to do that at the barbecue we hold next year.

"We bought a case of hot dogs, a case of smokies, a case of burger patties and a mountain of buns for this year's barbecue, and there wasn't much left at the end of the event.

"So, I'd have to say this year's event was pretty successful, despite the number of uninvited mosquitoes that showed up."

Hall of Fame Arviat Susan Aglukark, originally from Arviat, is the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee for 2019.

The hall of fame is the latest accolade for Aglukark, who is also the first Inuk artist to win a Juno Award, is a recipient of the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for lifetime artistic achievement, and is also an officer of the Order of Canada.

Aglukark will be inducted into the hall of fame at the WCMA Artists Awards Reception in Whitehorse on Oct. 3.

AEM reports Nunavut Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) second quarter results show a net income of $27.8 million, or $0.12 per share.

The result includes non-cash foreign currency translation gains on deferred tax liabilities of $5.9 million ($0.03 per share), derivative gains on financial instruments, markto-market and other adjustments of $3.3 million ($0.01 per share) and non-cash foreign currency translation losses of $4.1 million ($0.02 per share).

AEM's report on the Meliadine mine – which declared commercial production on May 14 – shows the total precommercial ounces of gold produced were 47,281 (including 17,582 ounces in the first quarter of 2019).

Total capital costs for the development of Meliadine were approximately $830 million, which is below the original forecast of $900 million. Operations are continuing to ramp up and expected production for 2019 remains unchanged at approximately 230,000 ounces of gold (including precommercial production).

The report also shows the Amaruq project remains on schedule for commercial production.

Narwhal tags Rankin Inlet/Baker Lake The Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) announced the community of Rankin Inlet was awarded 30 narwhal tags for 2019 on July 25.

The news release stated due to the fact Rankin had not filled its quota during the past three years, there will be no restrictions on waiting, means of travel, or limits per person.

Hunters were also reminded that SPOT locator devices are available through search-and-rescue and survival suits via the local HTO. The Rankin HTO also asked hunters to observe Naujaat HTO bylaws, and to notify the Kangiqliniq HTO when heading out so it can keep track of hunters out on the water and tag availability.

The community of Baker Lake was awarded with seven tags. Hunting season began on July 15.

Inquisitive young minds Actua science camp spends week in Rankin Inlet

A group of kids spent a week enjoying their love of science with members of the visiting Actua summer science camp in Rankin Inlet.

Actua is a Canadian charitable organization that delivers science, engineering and technology educational programs to young people in Canada.

Actua camp instructor Aishani Chakravarty said the July 22 to 26 camp featured a number of activities pertaining to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

She said the activities varied from practicing suturing on small suture pads, to an introduction to computer science that included teaching the young science lovers a bit about coding using simple computer programs.

"We also had a day that focused on health topics that included careers in

health and public health activities, as well as a theme day that saw the students incorporate art into science, and some time spent focusing on robots," said Chakravarty.

"During theme day, we covered things such as the science behind music and the physics of sound, such as sound waves, and the kids also got to make their own record player.

"The kids really enjoyed their time with us and they were a very engaged group.

"They had a lot of fun questions about science during the week, such as how does the sound come from the record player to our ears, so, yeah, the week went quite well."

The Actua science camp and its focus on STEM activities attracted between 20 to 25 students aged seven to 12 during each day of the week in Rankin.

Chakravarty said the day spent bringing art and science together was the most

popular activity among the kids.

She said one can certainly see that music is a very big part of the Rankin community by watching the kids throughout the day dedicated to art and science.

"The kids were totally engaged when they got to do musical production and create their own songs using Hydrogen, which is a program you often find on a laptop.

"They also got to make their own instruments and learn about circuitry, which they also really enjoyed."

Chakravarty, a full-time student at Carleton University in Ottawa, took on the role of instructor with Actua as a summer job.

"I just love working with kids and I always wanted to come up North, so this job was a perfect fit for me right now," said Chakravarty.

"It's been everything I hoped it would be and more – a really unparallelled experience."

Depending on who you believe about the recently leaked report on the Nunavut Teacher's Education Program (NTEP), there are more than enough concerns to go around.

Let's be honest, it's a little hard to swallow the Government of Nunavut's (GN) response that it always meant to release the report, which, apparently, was completed in October 2017.

And, as most everyone knows by now, the report was quite critical of NTEP, saying that in its current state, it is unable to meet the needs for this territory to offer students a bilingual education.

Looking back at GN Education Minister David Joanasie's response to accusations from the Nunavut Teacher's Association that the GN lied about Sanikiluaq the report being completed, I think many would agree that something being completed two years ago and only out now because it was leaked was, indeed, secretly squirreled away by the government.

But, hey, it also shows that in a mere 20 years, the GN has learned to be just as secretive and misleading as every other government.

Time to count Arctic char Project to show how the fish population faring in the region

A $20 reward is being offered to fishers in the Kivalliq region who bring in the stomach contents and muscle from their catch of Arctic char to their local hunters and trappers organizations (HTO).

The project is being run by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in partnership with HTOs across the region.

Kangiqliniq HTO spokesperson Clayton Tartak of Rankin Inlet said the project started during a meeting with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in February.

He said during that meeting, a point of knowledge raised by Naujaat elder Paul Malliki kick-started the process.

"He told the meeting he was taught as a kid to check the stomach contents of fish he caught, and he still does that today," said Tartak.

"From the conversation we had following Paul's statements, it was determined that we could do a scientific study on stomach content – a stable isotope analysis that tells you what the fish are eating.

"Six of the seven Kivalliq communities are participating in this project, with only Baker Lake not involved."

Tartak said fishers pick up the sample bags at their local HTO and, when they catch fish, they simply take out the guts and a small piece of flesh and put them into the two bags provided.

He said the bags are then stored in a freezer to await being shipped to a lab in Winnipeg for both a stable isotope analysis

"We'll have a far better understanding of how our fish population is doing once we have those results, and they should also tell us why some of our fish aren't as red anymore, so that will be interesting to see,"

he said.

"There's no real concerns with the process as it's pretty straight-forward work, but it's work well worth doing.

"Moving forward, we're hoping to expand this project into other parts of the ecosystem

to ultimately include everything from shrimp or krill up to beluga whales and polar bears.

"Right now, we're looking at planning for the next three years of data collection and, at that time, it will be decided if the project is still worthwhile to continue with."
