Pencil artist's books champion human spirit Two decades of work comes to fruition for Manitoban with his book Portraits of the Far North

The culmination of two decades of pride, determination and effort took with Darrell Greer place in Baker Lake when pencil artist Gerald Kuehl held the Kivalliq's book launch for Portraits of the Far North in the community on Nunavut Day, July 9.

It's the second of Kuehl's efforts to Sanikiluaq be published, following Portraits of the North two years ago.

Portraits of the Far North was issued last month, featuring 106 drawings and written profiles of Kivalliq elders.

Of those 106 Kivalliq elders, 39 are from Baker Lake and their families will all receive a free copy of Keuhl's book.

Twelve new Baker Lake portraits were also unveiled during the book launch and presented to the elders or their families.

The 12 new portraits will join the 27 currently hanging in Baker's community hall.

Kuehl said Calm Air – helping to sponsor the book launch in Baker – has been assisting him with Portraits of the Far North since 2003.

He said the project would not have been possible if not for the airline's help and sponsorship.

"My first book has been very successful; spending the first seven months after its release on the Manitoba Bestseller List," said Kuehl.

"My expectations are high for my second book, especially given the current love affair for polar people such as Inuit and Sami around the world today."

Dreams come true

Rankin Inlet A group of gymnasts from the Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights Gymnastics) club made their dream come true by raising thousands upon thousands of dollars so they could fly off to Rankweil, (Dornbirn) Austria, this past week as part of the Team Canada contingent performing at the 16th World Gymnaestrada from July 7 to 13.

A total of 22,000 participants from 69 countries will be represented at the gathering, making it the largest single sporting event in the world.

Like the Olympics, the World Gymnaestrada is held once every four years.

Centre opens Baker Lake The Vera Akumalik Visitor's Center opened for the summer last week in Baker Lake.

The visitor's centre will be open from 10 a.m. until noon, and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. during the afternoons of Monday through Saturday.

Flag bearer Rankin Inlet Ashley Tulugak of Rankin Inlet will be Canada's flag bearer at the 25th Anniversary Young Living International Grand Convention at the Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 17 to 20.

Pencil artist Gerald Kuehl signs a copy of his portrait book, Portraits Of The Far North, earlier in Winnipeg. which he gathered a tremendous amount of knowledge.

He said that rings especially true at a time when Canada is involved in reconciliation, and he wishes the average Canadian had a fraction of his experiences.

"The First Peoples of this country

have amazing cultures and I have an immense appreciation for the people, their traditional cultures and who they are.

Bad weather forced the activities indoors at the community hall but it couldn't do anything to dampen the spirits of the hundreds who came out to celebrate Canada Day in Rankin Inlet on July 1.

It really seems like just yesterday when the birth of Canada's newest territory was fast approaching the horizon of reality, and consensus government (and if I may) of, for and by the people was set to reach new heights in Nunavut (Our Land).

It was to be a territory of one voice for the people, with the majority having its say on all major political decisions that shaped the future of our territory.

It was, of course, in this age of majority rules, wishful thinking and, today, in many ways, Iqaluit has simply replaced Yellowknife in the role Sanikiluaq of the evil empire that gets far more than its share of what the territorial government has to offer.

The dream, as Mr. John Lennon so aptly put it four decades ago, is over.

And, today, if we are to take a huge step toward the American style of state governance with our premier being separate from the legislative assembly – my two bold predictions are that the first publicly-elected premier will be from the Baffin and it's only a matter of time before we have our own version of a Mr. Doug Ford or (love him, or despise him) Mr. Donald Trump heading our territory.

Youth program battling for life Makimautiksat program has strong record against suicide

Mental health outreach worker Brittany Holm teamed-up with Tuugaalik High School's community counsellor, Jennifer Kadjuk, to deliver the Makimautiksat Youth Wellness and Empowerment program to a senior high class shortly before the end of the school year in Naujaat recently.

Holm said the Makimautiksat program is an evidence-based, community- and land-based program.

She said the program is designed to expand on the known protective factors for youth in the prevention of suicide, and the promotion of wellness.

"Since the program began in 2013, not one participant who attended the entire program has died by suicide," said Holm.

"Developed, piloted and evaluated from 2010 to 2015, the Makimautiksat program is based on an evidence-based model for supporting Inuit adolescent mental health, which was developed by the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre (QHRC), and published in the International Journal for Indigenous Health."

The Makimautiksat Youth Camp program is delivered by a pair of facilitators and includes a minimum mandatory land component.

Holm said if circumstances and student-and-teacher schedules can't be worked out for the implementa-

tion of a two-week camp to deliver the Makimautiksat program, it can be delivered as an after school drop-in program over the fall and winter months, ending with a land camp in the spring.

This model has also shown some success, although they are still evaluating its overall effectiveness.

"With permission from the QHRC, we choose to do the program twice a week throughout the second semester with the senior class in Naujaat," she said.

"The Makimautiksat is the Inuktitut term for building a foundation within oneself, as the Eight Ujarait/ Rocks Model and the Makimautiksat Youth Camp program celebrate the spirit of the whole child, and the strengths and capabilities of our

young people in Nunavut.

"The model for this camp includes a series of activities designed to incorporate both Western knowledge and Inuit Qaujimajtu Makimautiksat qangit into a program which celebrates all forms of knowledge and child development.

"During their time in this program, the students learned about strengthening coping skills, fostering healthy relationships, nurturing awareness of the body, crafting and exploring creativity, fostering personal and community wellness, encouraging self-discovery and future planning, understanding informed choices and peer pressure and, lastly, celebrating the land and connecting knowledge and skills while out on the land."

Summertime fun and learning Solid lineup of activities for youth in Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Inlet recreation department has been going full speed with a number of summer projects.

The hamlet recently opened its Area 6 playground, making it the fifth playground in the community the department of recreation maintains.

Rec co-ordinator David Clark said a new playground is always a valuable addition to the community.

He said this summer promises to be one of the busiest in recent memory, with a number of programs, camps and special activities planned in July and August.

"We have a good partnership with (charitable organization) ACTUA, which has been bringing its weeklong science camp and other programs to Rankin Inlet for quite a while now," said Clark.

The baseball program to introduce kids aged five to 10 to the game is now in its third year, with the kids taking to the field every Tuesday and Thursday evening to have some fun by hitting the ball and

running the bases.

"The program is all about having fun while learning the basics of the game of baseball."

The summer lineup in Rankin also includes two programs making their first appearance in the community.

The Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut will be hosting a week-long sports camp at the artificial-turf field from July 22 to 26 that will include flag football, ultimate Frisbee, soccer and a handful of other outdoor field sports.

Clark said the Mining Matters program is also underway at the rec hall.

He said the not-for-profit organization is having its camp funded by Agnico Eagle Mines in Rankin this summer.

"Participants will learn a lot about different rocks and minerals at the camp, as well as explore plant and animal life with people from the University of Saskatchewan.

"The campers will also get to learn how life as we see it around us would not exist today without the rocks and minerals being

"As far as the number of participants each camp or program can accommodate – we can have up to 100 kids in youth softball, 25 in Mining Matters, 40 in the summer-sports camp and 30 at the ACTUA science camp, and that's in addition to the 70 kids we've already booked in our

regular summer day camp."

Clark said it's shaping up to be a fun-filled summer for the kids, but there's still one thing missing he'd like to see back.

He said the hamlet is hoping to, one day, have a swimming pool back in the community again.

"A swimming pool is very import-

ant to me, so it's going to be the next big item on my list to strive for once the new arena opens.

"I started this job 12 years ago with a bunch of projects I wanted to get done and the new arena is the last one I had on my original list "So now it's time for me to make a new list."

The Kivalliq was saddened by a pair of recent tragedies; one involving an accidental drowning, the other a baby injured by a gunshot.

Officers of the Chesterfield Inlet detachment of the RCMP responded to a request for assistance in locating a person who fell into the water while rafting to an egg-picking location on First Lake on July 3.

The body of an adult male was recovered from First Lake, located about three kilometres from the community, with the assistance of local residents. Foul play has been ruled out. Alcohol may have been a factor.

The name of the victim will not be released out of respect for the family.

Meanwhile, a nine-month-old baby – who was medevaced to Winnipeg – is reported to be in stable condition after being injured when a gun was discharged in a home in Rankin Inlet on July 2. The baby was in an adjacent room when the weapon was fired.

The Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP has released no further information.

"I cannot stress enough of the importance of keeping your guns secured properly and that ammunition is stored away from the firearm," stated Cpl. Jamie Savikataaq in a news release.

"When firearms and ammunition are easily accessible and an individual is not in the right place of mind, the results can be damaging and life altering.

"It's the law to keep your firearms secured and locked."
