Rankin Inlet Mayor Harry Towtongie presents Monica Aqittuq Ugjuk with the 2018/2019 Elders Recognition Award in the Rankin Inlet council chambers earlier this month.

Elder award Rankin Inlet Monica Aqittuq Ugjuk of Rankin Inlet has been named the recipient of the 2018/19 Elders Recognition Award.

The award is given every two years by Inuit Heritage Trust.

Ugjuk was selected for the award in recognition of her passion for Inuit culture and traditions and for passing on traditional knowledge to the next generations through her work. Rankin Inlet Mayor Harry Towtongie presented the award to Ugjuk on behalf of Inuit Heritage Trust on Jan. 15.

Arviat The 2020 Calm Air Cup Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) senior men's hockey tournament goes this week in Arviat from Jan. 23 to 26.

Nine teams are set to compete for JLM glory in A Division and B Division action.

Competing in the A Division will be Eskimo Point, Rankin Inlet, Naujaat, Arviat Kings and Whale Cove.

Set to go in the B Division are the Arviat Legends, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet and the Arviat Wolves.

The gold medal game for the B Division is set to be played at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, with the gold medal game for A Division immediately following at roughly 9:30 p.m.

New showdown date Baker Lake Due to conflicting schedules with Arviat, the 2020 Square Dance Showdown committee announced on Jan. 15 that the new date for the showdown will be April 2 to 7 in Baker Lake. The showdown was originally scheduled to be held from April 16 to 21.

Cooking program Rankin Inlet A Piujuq Program cooking class for expecting mothers or mothers with children under the age of two is being planned for Rankin Inlet.

The five-day workshop will run Monday to Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. from either Jan. 27 to Jan. 31, or, from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7.

The little school that can began its preparations for hosting the 2020 Kivalliq Regional Science Fair when Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) held its kindergarten to Grade 8 science fair in Chesterfield Inlet last week.

The tiny school in Chester has been a powerhouse at the regional fair during the past two decades, with at least one student qualifying to move on to the national competition for 16 straight years.

Kayalaaq Leishman-Brocklebank took top spot at the VSS science fair for her work on bean planting.

VSS teacher Glen Brocklebank said there was additional pressure – and opportunity – on the Grade 7 and Grade 8 students because two spots have been allotted for them to participate in the regional fair this March 20 to 23.

He said the kids did a great job at the VSS fair this year, with students in grades five and six producing the best science projects ever from those two grades at the school.

Students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) held their first semester elementary to Grade 8 science fair in Chesterfield Inlet last week.

The little school that excels in science will be hosting the annual Kivalliq Regional Science Fair from March 20 to 23, where eight students from VSS will have the opportunity to participate in the event compared to four for the other six Kivalliq communities.

Rankin man has canteen dream come true

Chadd Burrill began living one of his dreams the day the hamlet approved his proposal to operate the state-of-the-art Slapshot Canteen at the new arena in Rankin Inlet this past month.

Burrill has a three-year contract with the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet to run the canteen, with a possible option for a fourth year.

Burrill, 33, who works in the airports division with the Government of Nunavut in Rankin, has been involved with the food industry since he

started washing dishes at the Captain's Galley in the Siniktarvik Hotel when he was 12 years old.

Two years later, while working at a family member's restaurant in Rankin, he was standing on a bucket and cooking hamburgers.

The bucket was the only way he could reach the burgers at the back of the grill.

Burrill said he always had a spark inside for working in the food industry.

He said, over the years, it became a sort of hobby and then grew into much more.

"I've always enjoyed feeding people when

they're hungry and giving them good, honest food for their money," said Burrill.

"I'm self-taught in how I think food should be prepared and people seem to like my approach.

'I never dared to dream' "I never dared to dream in a million years that I'd ever have an opportunity like this. But it all happened in a kind of a spurof-the-moment way and here I am."

Burrill said he really didn't think he'd be selected when he submitted his proposal to run the arena canteen to the hamlet.

He said he was happy,

surprised and shocked when told his proposal was accepted.

"The support I've received from the community and my suppliers in town has been unbelievable.

"Everybody just stepped up to give me a helping hand when I needed it without a second's hesitation.

"I know people say it all the time, but it truly is a dream come true for me to be given the opportunity to run the Slapshot Canteen.

"I'm blessed and truly grateful. I don't have the words to describe how blessed I feel inside for all

the community support I've received while doing this."

Burrill said he couldn't be happier with the crew he has running the Slapshot Canteen.

He said it's like everything came together to complete the perfect puzzle during this time in his life.

"Things like this just don't happen for me too often in my life," said Burrill with a chuckle.

"It's been a real rollercoaster ride of emotions, but I couldn't be happier for how it's all come together so perfectly for me to operate the Slapshot Canteen.

"I have a lot to be thankful for these days."

Hoop dreams for Arviat teen Donald Baker Spence makes up for late start on basketball court

Donald Baker Spence has improved his basketball game enoug to head to the Arcic Winter Games this year.

Arviat's Donald Baker Spence quickly achieved one of the goals towards realizing his dream of one day playing college basketball when he was selected to hit the court with Team Nunavut at the upcoming Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Whitehorse.

Spence, or DBS as he is known to his friends, has thought of little else other

than college ball for the past two years.

At just 16 years of age, Spence led the Arviat Wolves to a 2-2 record at this year's territorial tournament in Cambridge Bay – catching the eye of every evaluator in the gym as Arviat's leading scorer and rebounder, while being quite effective at both ends of the court.

Wolves coach Ryan Barbeau said a monumental shift toward Spence becoming a complete basketball player

has taken place during the past 90 days.

He said he believes Spence's understanding of the game, leadership and overall skill developed so much because he was so invested in becoming a better player.

"All great athletes have three things in common," said Barbeau. "They have an obsession with their craft, a desire to improve and a willingness to be coached."

Spence takes full advantage of open gym time at John

Arnalukjuak High School to shoot baskets on his own and join a game after school.

Barbeau said the amicable teenager displays a passion for the sport that you just don't see in many kids and he truly loves the game. He said Spence also loves to practice and work on his skills.

"For someone who has only been playing basketball for two years, I have been extremely impressed with his ability and his growth during the past three months."

Spence said was pretty confident he played well at the territorial in Cambridge Bay. And, perhaps even more importantly, his description of his time in Cambridge shows a level of maturity not always found in a 16 year old.

"It was a great experience to meet new people and play against the other good teams," said Spence.

"And it was great to meet the other players from different communities.

"That was my first time in Cambridge Bay and it was an experience I will always remember."

Barbeau said it's awesome to hear and see all the kids interacting with each other and having a good time off of the basketball floor during

the territorial.

He said basketball has a special way of bringing people together and the Cambridge Bay tournament was no exception.

"The kids from Arviat had the chance to meet new kids from Baker Lake, Pond Inlet, Iqaluit and Iglulik, as well as other communities," said Barbeau.

"The thought of playing college basketball was always in the back of Spence's mind but, after the territorial, he realized that it may be something that is realistic and extremely possible.

While college ball is still a bit down the road for Spence, the AWG are just around the corner. He will be among the youngest players on the court in Whitehorse.

Spence will also be among the most competitive on the court and among those enjoying the AWG experience the most away from it.

"I am excited," said Spence. "I want to meet the other AWG players from Nunavut.

"It is going to be my first time in Whitehorse and I think it's going to be the furthest I have ever travelled.

"I am going to train very hard to be as prepared and ready as I possibly can be for the tournament.
