Voices in song being heard Rankin students featured on international recording

As the accolades continue to come in for Darkspark's Four Directions Project, Rankin Inlet students are featured on the latest song to be released as a single, Taught by the Best.

The tune has been featured on the Spotify Indigenous Music playlist which has more than 10,000 followers, as well as Apple Music.

Darkspark – a not-for-profit arts organization – was awarded with the prestigious Intercultural Innovation Award by the United Nations Alliance of Civilization and BMW in Madrid, Spain, on Dec. 10, 2019, recognizing Darkspark as a global Sanikiluaq leader in promoting intercultural understanding.

Darkspark is one of ten selected organizations recognized worldwide for the award, following a competitive selection process with over 1,200 applications received from 128 countries.

Darkspark spokesperson Jenna Rogers said being recognized internationally by the United Nations is pretty significant.

She said the project focuses on empowering youth to speak about issues with their own voice, as opposed to having someone else speak for them.

"It's all about empowering the youth perspective and their experiences," said Rogers.

"The making of the music is an education-based process and having elders involved in the project is really important.

"The elder voice is really crucial for Darkspark teams that travel to the communities and they even have a lot of recordings from the elders on the EP (extended play) they released.

"Including the elders on the EP not only highlights their voices, it also shows that they're an important part of the learning as well as passing on their knowledge and traditions."

The Intercultural Innovation Award supports Darkspark extending its unique accomplishment and method with The Four Directions Project to other racialized youth and communities world-wide.

Darkspark's innovative method of community building, education and empowerment through music and media used in the project has created a blueprint to help and empower communities globally.

Grade 7 and 8 students at MUI took part in the Four Directions Project led

by Darkspark from Nov. 25 until Dec. 3 in 2018.

The program helps participating youth discover how colonial and stereotypical prejudices were created, are maintained and may be broken.

Rogers said including the elders also highlights the fact that the team members

are not coming in and essentially colonizing an educational song-writing process.

She said the Darkspark team members make it evident from their arrival that they want to work with the community during the process.

"From what I've heard in feedback from the kids taking part in the project, is that they definitely do feel empowered through being able to speak on the issues and then having the music distributed by worldwide platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

"I think it shows that giving them a voice and a platform where people listen to them, makes them feel like they're really being heard and recognized.

"That feeling will continue to grow as we get more coverage on national radio that gets syndicated to the United States.

"Music is a universal language and just having the platform is important to having the voices of youth heard."

Sharp gesture from Yellowknife company Overlander Sports donates skate-sharpening machine to Naujaat

Sometimes there truly is a silver lining hidden in those storm clouds.

Community Government and Services Minister Lorne Kusugak found one of those silver linings when his plane flew over Rankin Inlet when he was trying to get home for a meeting of the Nunavut Association of Municipalities and the grand opening of the community's new state-ofthe-art arena in December.

Kusugak said he ultimately ended-up in Yellowknife for a few days and decided to pay a visit to his old friends, Sandra and Bill Sterling, who are the owners of Overlander Sports in Yellowknife.

He said, as all old friends always do, they began chatting it up and the conversation soon turned to the new arena being opened in Rankin Inlet.

"Once we began talking about the arena and hockey in general, they mentioned to me they had purchased a new skate-sharpening machine,"

"Then they told me about their old machine, which is in the $30,000 to $40,000 range and still in great condition.

"They asked me if a community in the Kivalliq could use it if they donated the machine and paid to transport it to its new home.

"Really, I knew almost every community in the Kivalliq could use it, but then I came across Rodney Taparti from Naujaat and I thought what better place?"

Kusugak said the ges-

ture from Overlander Sports deserves to be recognized by the region.

He said Taparti told him it would be quite welcome in Naujaat.

"It's always nice to see a business make a gesture like this to help out a community, especially one that loves hockey as much as Naujaat.

"I'm sure the skate sharpener will be a valued piece of equipment in the community for many years to come."

Taparti, Naujaat's recreation co-ordinator, said he had

gone out for a quick shopping trip when he ran into Kusugak.

He said there was no way in the world he'd turn down an offer like that for the community when Kusugak presented it to him.

"We have one person in town people take to sharpen their skates, but this will be much better as a machine like that should do a better job on the blades and it will housed on-site at the arena," said Taparti.

"We have a workout room

at the arena that nobody really uses, so we'll move that equipment to the community centre and put the skatesharpening machine at the arena.

"It will be a lot better having it there, especially when players are in from out of town when we're hosting the Arctic Circle Cup senior men's tournament.

"We can't thank Overlander Sports enough for this machine and it will be appreciated in Naujaat for many years ahead, I hope."

Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Rock hockey team defied the odds and successfully defended its Winnipeg Jets Challenge Cup Bantam A1 championship last month in Winnipeg.

The Rock went undefeated (6-0) in the tournament which ran from Dec. 24 to 31, 2019.

Successfully defending the A1 Division title – the top level of A Division hockey – is even more impressive considering the Rock only have three second-year bantams on its roster this season.

Head coach David Clark said this year's team has a group of kids who have played together for a long time and know how to win.

He said, overall, the Rock bantam team is a little on the small side, but the players are very quick on the ice and they are all hard workers who rarely take a shift off.

"It was our hard work that really separated us from the other teams in the tournament," said Clark. "Many of the players on our team have been together since atoms and ever earlier, so it's a tight-knit bunch."

The Rock now focus its attention on the regional bantam tournament this weekend (Jan. 17 to 19) in Rankin Inlet, but Clark said they're all still enjoying their win in Winnipeg.

He said defending the A1 banner is no easy task and he's proud of the effort his players put in at the event.

"Successfully defending our title in Winnipeg with a lot younger team – and a different kind of team than the previous year to be honest about it – was pretty rewarding."

Clark didn't have much time to catch his breath before heading back to Winnipeg for the Winnipeg Jets AA Showdown from Jan. 2 to 5 with Nunavut's bantam team in preparation for the upcoming Arctic Winter Games (AWG).

The results were nowhere near the same in the win-loss column, but Clark said the team was in every game but one while trying to find their identity for the AWG. "We didn't win a game the whole tournament, but three of the five were one-goal games so we were in the majority of them," said Clark.

"It was a chance for us, as coaches, to try a few different things and it was a learning experience for some of our players before the AWG, as well.

"You might be fast, able to light it up a bit and take advantage of some of the weaker players in your local league, but this is a whole different level and it doesn't work like that here.

"Some players hear that being said and stuff but, until you play at this level and experience it, you really don't grasp how much of a step up it really is.

"We have some really good players on this team and we'll be ready to compete from the first time they drop the puck to the last at the AWG."

A final Beatles bow Northern News Services

I can honestly say there was only one good thing about my holiday season this year and that was picking-up my deluxe editions of the Beatles two incredible albums, The Beatles (The White Album) and their grand finale, Abbey Road.

Both albums returned to Number One status with their reissues a full 50 years after first entering the charts. Just an incredible accomplishment.

If you're into The Beatles at all, these two releases are the best of the bunch and the deluxe editions are worth every penny despite the exorbitant price tags.

Giles Martin – son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin – did another outstanding job remixing the two albums and the vast majority of songs have a fresh new feel to them that really make you Sanikiluaq sit-up and take notice.

He truly did a wonderful job on both efforts.

The White Album represents by far the most eclectic work of the Beatles and the remaster brings each and every track back to life with stunning clarity.

There are two main draws to the deluxe edition of the White Album reissue.

Having a very merry Christmas Rankin family wins big at NHL game in Winnipeg

The Kabluitok family didn't know Lady Luck had paid them a big visit when they left the NHL game pitting the Montreal Canadiens against the Winnipeg Jets 10-minutes early on Dec. 23.

Back at their hotel Panikuluk (Kayylynn), who purchased the ticket shortly after they arrived at the MTS Centre, mentioned to her husband that he should log onto the Internet and check the winning numbers picked at the game.

Eugene said he got super excited as he read the numbers on the screen.

He said he called his wife to take another look just in case he might be dreaming.

"I was in either shock or disbelief staring at that number looking back at me," said Eugene.

"There was our ticket number listed next to the top prize of $90,635 or something

like that.

"Our kids had no idea what was going on as I was yelling and my wife was in like absolute shock.

"It was all so crazy and we didn't actually claim the prize until Dec. 27 when my wife went to claim it while I watched my son play in his peewee tournament."

Eugene said the game was totally sold out and there were Montreal fans wearing red everywhere he looked in the arena.

He said the pot was also a little bigger because the organizers put an extra $20,000 in as a Christmas gesture to the fans.

"I was awhile believing we had actually won it, but it sure was an exciting feeling when the ticket was confirmed and we knew for sure we were getting the money.

"And I'm not even a fan of either team. I'm a New Jersey fan but we like to go down to Winnipeg every once in a while to see an NHL game."

Panikuluk was even longer to believe she had won the draw than Eugene because she thought her husband was playing a joke on her and putting her on.

Panikuluk said she even thought that number was from a previous draw because she doesn't usually have luck anywhere near that level.

She said it took a long time and a number of calls before she finally accepted the fact her husband wasn't deep into some kind of prank on her and they had actually won.

"At first I was really in shock and couldn't believe it to the point where I was thinking the numbers could somehow change," Panikuluk said with a laugh.

"That night Eugene couldn't sleep because he was so excited, but I slept like a baby because, I guess, I still didn't believe it was real, so I wasn't giving much thought to it.

"The next morning, I made more calls to check the

number and, when I finally accepted that this was real, I just started crying because I was so overwhelmed by it all.

"I must have checked that number a million times before I finally believed we won."

Panikuluk said the family has to wait a little bit to receive the money.

She said there's only a couple of things for sure she'd like to spend some of it on.

"So far, we've only decided that we're definitely going to buy a new snowmobile.

"I would love to take my kids on a vacation to somewhere we would never of had the opportunity to visit if it wasn't for this.

"My youngest one has a number of different health matters that make travelling difficult for her, so we're going to have to wait until her health is good enough for us all to go.

"But that's something I'd really, really like to do with some of the money from this."
