Tourney reset Rankin Inlet Young minor hockey players from across the Kivalliq will be descending on Rankin Inlet this coming weekend as the community hosts the annual Arctic Atoms tournament from Feb. 14 to 16.

The tourney had originally been scheduled for the Feb. 7 to 9 weekend in Rankin.

The host Rankin Rock atoms squad will be trying to successfully defend their 2019 crown at this year's event.

KIA directors meet Arviat The Kivalliq Inuit Association will be holding a board of directors meeting in Arviat from Feb. 19 to 21.

The meetings will begin at 9 a.m. at the Katimavik Suites conference room.

Language month Nunavut The Government of Nunavut is inviting Nunavummiut to share their family stories through Attiiniq, the customary practice of Inuit naming, during Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq - celebration of Inuktut language month in February.

Minister of Languages David Joanasie wrote in a press release that this year's theme celebrates the practice of naming; a powerful expression of who Inuit are as individuals and as a society.

"Passed on for countless generations, Inuit names ground us in our families and communities, while keeping the living knowledge of our history, culture and language thriving and strong," wrote Joanasie.

Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq is an annual celebration on the importance, history and diversity of Inuktut in the territory.

The press release went on to say that starting in February, the Department of Culture and Heritage will promote activities and release various Inuktut literacy resources on Inuit names and naming customs, including the launch of the new Qilaut CD promoting family and relationships.

The $1.6 billion Kivalliq-Manitoba hydro-fibre link received a boost when a memorandum of understanding project was signed by the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) on Feb. 5.

The memorandum confirms the CIB will work in an advisory role with the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA), Sakku Investments Corp., Anbaric Development Partners and the Ontario Teacher's Plan on planning and development of the proposed project.

KIA president Kono Tattuinee said the memorandum is a significant step in advancing the project.

"We've been working with the federal government for a number of years now on this project and the CIB has a mandate to support green infrastructure

projects," said Tattuinee.

"This is the first project in Nunavut that the CIB is supporting, so we are very pleased. This is a nation-building project.

"We can't emphasize enough how important this project is to our region.

"We're still early in the feasibility stage, conducting the necessary studies to advance this project."

The CIB is a Crown corporation mandated to invest $35 billion in federal funding and attract private sector investment into new revenue-generating infrastructure projects.

The hydro-fibre link would see the construction of a 1,200-kilometre, 150-megawatt transmission line between Nunavut and Manitoba to deliver renewable, sustainable and reliable hydroelectricity energy to the region.

It may also reduce the area's depend-

ence on diesel power generation using shipped-in fuel.

The hydroelectric transmission line would provide five Kivalliq communities and several mine sites with environmentally sustainable energy and has the potential to create economic benefits for Nunavut.

And, fibre-optic cabling included in the project would bring broadband connectivity to the region for the first time, enhancing telecommunications services for residents, businesses and public services.

Kivalliq Inuit hold a 51 per cent share in the project through the KIA, which would eventually become 100 per cent when the Ontario Teacher's Plan is paid out for its investment. bflA m2WZ6

It was always cool to me to watch Rankin Inlet's own Jordin Tootoo play in the NHL, although I was disappointed in the way Detroit treated him during his stay there and, to a lesser extent, Chicago, as well – two places where the players on the team wanted him there.

But, first and foremost, when you realize how very, very few of all those with hopes, dreams and aspirations of playing in the NHL truly have as much as even an outside chance at making the show.

If you're a fan of the coolest game on Earth, you also truly have to respect the amount of talent, dedicaSanikiluaq tion and hard work it takes a player to make the greatest hockey league in the world, especially those destined to occupy a spot on a team's third or fourth forward line or third pairing on defense.

So, in the eyes of the game – which is a pretty big deal to me – Jordin had my respect from day one.

And, as every Canadian knows with even a passing interest in the sport of hockey, or the state of Indigenous affairs in our country, Jordin is also deserving of our respect for the undeniable reason that he is still here among us today, after the tragedy that befell the Tootoo family.

The first reaction from Rankin Inlet rec director David Clark, when approached by the CBC to do a piece on him during the Hockey Day in Canada telecast, was to tell the reporter he didn't want it to be just about him.

Par for the course for Clark, who would likely give up every medal and trophy he's won playing hockey – and that's quite a few – if it meant protecting or bettering his annual hockey camp for the kids.

It wasn't that Clark wasn't blown away by the offer of being part of the telecast. Far from it. He's spent his entire life around the game of hockey – and what hockey fanatic doesn't daydream about being on Hockey Night in Canada?

He was just being honest with the TV folks, while also being really busy – and a little stressed out – planning and scheduling the start of the hockey season around his annual hockey camp, as well as being ready

"I was pretty excited about it, but I was also a little nervous.

"We've all dreamed about being on Hockey Night in Canada – of course those dreams are about playing – but I didn't quite get that far so, I guess, this will just have to do.

"I'm also really curious to see what the finished product will look like from the filmmaker we had come to Rankin for our hockey camp.

"She does mini documentaries too, so I'm looking forward to seeing what she came up with."

Team Aliyak takes first hockey challenge Defeats Team Misheralak 6-4 in salute to Rankin's hockey-loving elders

The first Team (Tommy) Misheralak versus Team (Moses) Aliyak Hockey Challenge was warmly received in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 8.

The Rankin Rock peewee team split into two club squads dressed in Toronto blue and Montreal red for a game played on Hockey Day in Canada that salutes the two late hockey-crazy brothers – and the whole gang of super-fan elders who always occupied the same corner seats at the old Rankin arena while watching local hockey games.

Team Aliyak, dressed in Toronto blue, defeated Team Misheralak 6-4 in the first Challenge game, which is now set to become an annual event.

The Challenge was the brainchild of longtime Rankin Royals junior female volleyball coach Robert Kabvitok, who now coaches minor hockey at the peewee level in Rankin.

Kabvitok said the event turned out to be totally awesome.

He said he keeps the same two lineups together to play a best-of-five series throughout the season, but this game seemed different in just about every respect.

"Maybe it was the team names, or maybe the team colours, but it felt different than the games they play against each other during our season," said Kabvitok.

"I tried to make sure each side was the same team as during their five-game series and the team that hasn't won a game yet in that series won today.

"They were Team Aliyak, wearing Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys, so I think their win must have been because of the coaching, or the Toronto jersey, or, maybe, because they were just so pumped for that game.

"The crowd was so awesome, too – it was a really good game and they were really into it – that it felt like we were playing in a big tournament game."

Kabvitok said, even at the young age of peewee, he thought his players grasped what the game was all about.

He said when the team travelled to Winnipeg earlier this season, he told the players what they had to look forward to when this game rolled around.

"I had already told them that they would be playing in other tournaments and have other big games this year, but I think this was the game that they were most looking forward to," he said.

Kabvitok said, when all was said and done, the kids had a really good time and they enjoyed playing in that game.

He said it was priceless looking at their faces when they first entered the dressing room and saw their new jerseys hung around the room.

"My son and I had hung the jerseys up before they came in and that turned into a special moment for everyone.

"They also enjoyed all the attention during the game – the music playing, the crowd watching and being so into the game and Noel Kaludjak announcing all the goals and penalties.

"It can get tiring being at the arena almost every day, but, on a day like that – looking at the kids' faces and seeing the families in the crowd – you remember why you do this."

There was a distinct Rankin Inlet presence among participants who completed the Indigenous Cultural Competency (ICC) course which wrapped-up in Iqaluit last week.

Three of the eight who completed the ICC course – Emily Beardsal, Marla Balzer and Sam Tutanuak (now residing in Iqaluit) – all hail from Rankin.

The curriculum for the ICC course was developed by the Indigenous Reconciliation Group and is now delivered territory wide.

"Myself, personally, I would strongly recommend the ICC course to all Nunavummiut – those who are born and raised here, those who have been around Nunavut for a while and those who are brand new to Nunavut," said Tutanuak.

"There's still this perception of Indigenous people being drunk, poor, unhealthy and unmotivated and this is a damn good course that challenges you to alter those perceptions and it broadens thinking levels for everyone.

"The facilitating course I took was

geared towards Nunavummiut – there are some parts that pertain to southern Canada and wouldn't really apply up here – and what was added-in for Nunavut certainly hit the nail right on the head, so to speak."

The delivery of the course is managed by the Quality of Life Secretariat with continued support from the Indigenous Reconciliation Group.

The Department of Culture and Heritage prioritized the ICC course to support the Government of Nunavut's mandate to implement Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, while the Department of Education highlights it as an orientation step for all incoming teachers.

The course contributes significantly to reconciliation, workplace relations and service-delivery quality.

ICC courses are provided by certified facilitators, with most courses in Nunavut being delivered by local instructors.

Tutanuak said he had taken the ICC course a couple of years ago and was back this time because he was asked if he would be interested in becoming a facilitator.

"If I'm not mistaken, the two-week

course is geared mostly towards GN staff," said Tutanuak.

"I got in when I did because I was with the Kivalliq Inuit Association at the time.

"Facilitators work in groups of three – the facilitator course, itself, is only two-days long – and the ICC course is always delivered by two or three facilitators working together."

The ICC course material is challenging, with the potential for difficult conversations about inter-generational trauma, racism and inclusion and hope for reconciliation.

ICC facilitators are expected to have excellent skills in instruction and group facilitation, as well as a knowledge base in the course curriculum.

Tutanuak said when he took the ICC course, the participants often practiced how to present themselves to a group.

He said, within a group, there are always going to be those who want to learn, those who were forced to go and those who really didn't want to go, but ended-up there anyway.

Tutanuak said they learned how to work with each type of individual.
