Covid outbreak declared over Whale Cove The Covid-19 outbreak was declared over in Whale Cove by Nunavut chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson on Feb. 4.

As of 11:59 p.m. that night, the indoor gathering limit in Whale Cove increased to a household plus 15 people, while outdoor gatherings now have a limit of 100 people.

Community halls, conference spaces, government and Inuit organization facilities are all now restricted to 50 people or 50 per cent capacity, whichever is less.

Physical distancing must be maintained in public and masks are strongly recommended.

Whale Cove's Inuglak School has moved into Stage 2, meaning the elementary school students are now attending school full-time, five days per week, while middle and high school students are attending school two to three days per week, with a blend of in-school and remote learning.

"I would like to thank both the community and health-care staff for their diligence and efforts to end the outbreak in Whale Cove," said Patterson in an official Government of Nunavut news release.

"Although restrictions are being loosened in the community, no one should let their guard down.

"The Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing, and I encourage all Nunavummiut to continue to follow public health measures to protect themselves and others."

Also in the Kivalliq region, as of press time there were 15 active Covid cases in Arviat.

Draw winners Baker Lake The lucky winners of the two draws held at the Sanavik Co-op in Baker Lake earlier this month were Silas Arngnanaaq and and Kenny Arngnanaaq.

Silas Arngnanaaq won the pair of Calm Air tickets, while Kenny Arngnanaaq won the win-back-your-voucher-value prize.

Sewing course Rankin Inlet A two-week sewing class held in Rankin Inlet that wrapped up recently was delivered through Community Wellness with funding supplied by the Embrace Life Council.

The class was instructed by Aline Kabvitok and Alice Ipkornark.

Adult digital skills workshop on offer Kivalliq An adult digital skills workshop is scheduled to be held in Rankin Inlet from Feb. 8 to 11, in Coral Harbour from Feb. 13 to 16, in Naujaat from March 3 to 6 and in Baker Lake from March 8 to 11.

Helping to make a difference Couple and their team enjoy volunteering to help food programs in Baker Lake

The husband-and-wife duo of Akulaak Amaruq and Darlene Nukik-Amaruq, along with their band of volunteers, have been doing their best to help folks out a little with food items for quite awhile now in Baker Lake.

Nukik-Amaruq, who is the chief economic development officer for the Hamlet of Baker Lake, said it all started about a decade ago when her children were much smaller and they all had a lot of visitors to the family home.

She said during that time she was learning to cook like she was cooking for an army.

"The idea just came to me at that time to start taking all the leftovers to our arena, so I went to the local radio station to announce that there was free leftover hot food that could be

picked up at the arena," said Darlene.

"We had a really good turnout that first time, so my husband and I decided we should try preparing everything at home and talk to the arena crew about if the kitchen was available there to serve in every now and then.

"Our hot lunch program began as once a month and then, when I was off work for a couple of years, we got some funding help from the Northern store and the Kivalliq Inuit Association and started doing it weekly.

"My main team is four volunteers, including myself, and we took the time to prepare the ingredients, normally the night before, and then do all the prepping and cooking the next morning before delivering it to the arena."

Kativik store closes its doors After almost two decades, former owner bids community a fond farewell

The owner of one of Rankin Inlet's most popular stores is turning out the lights for the final time and heading off to enjoy his retirement years.

Ron Roach was part of the ownership group to launch Kativik – a general store on one side and a hardware store on the other – in December 1999.

The group included Howard and Joyce Green, Shawn Maley and his then-wife Chantal, and Roach and his then-wife Goretti. Over the years Roach bought out Shawn, Chantal and Howard.

The shareholders at the store's closure were Roach, Joyce Green and his daughter, Jody Kusugak.

Roach said candidly that he knew it was time to retire when, after almost 40 years in the industry, he found he had no patience remaining to deal properly with customers or little else for that matter.

He said he was really taken aback about how many people were saddened by the news of Kativik's closure.

"The other big thing in my decision was all this Covid and having to wear masks in the store. I just grew so sick of it all and knew it's time for me to go," said Roach.

"I was surprised by how many positive comments were made about the store. I honestly didn't think the store was as well liked as it was and would be missed a lot more than I ever thought it would be.

"It was nice to see the people saying thank you and stuff like that. It was very, very nice."

Roach said you do have to pick and choose who you sponsor in town when you run

a small business, but you have to sponsor all the major events that happen in Rankin Inlet.

He said sometimes it can get a little overwhelming when you have every single group coming to you for penny sales and everything else, but you still donated to them.

"It's hard to say yes to one and no to the other so I wouldn't do that because I don't show favouritism.

"The No. 1 challenge I always faced with the store was staffing, especially when it came to the evening shift.

The day shift was always a walk in the park, but evenings and weekends were always the two hardest and a challenge to have staffed.

"The biggest things to remember about running your own business in Rankin are to make sure you get your name out there and sponsor the groups and major events. The more you do for the community, the more it turns around and come back to you.

"You have to support your community."

Roach said he always found the people in the community to be loyal to his store but he found as the more older people left corporate positions or the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) and Nunavut Tunngavik Corp. (NTI), the support from government, KIA and NTI was virtually non existent.

He said they used to support the store all the time but that came to an end with the changing of the guard.

"With the new, young change in management, and I have no idea why, they would not support small local businesses.

Time for naysayers to wear adult pants Northern News Services

Just like pretty much everyone else, I suffer big time from Covid-19 fatigue and wish the darn thing would just go away or had never been released upon the world to begin with.

But wishing is for romantics and penny fountains and all the wishing in the world won't change reality.

Make no mistake about it – we are at war with this virus and, although we are making progress against it, the war is far from over.

Reports on certain variants spreading more than 50 per cent quicker and showing resistance to the available vaccines are especially disconcerting.

They are already talking about the need for an annual booster shot becoming a very real possibility in the Sanikiluaq United Kingdom. And the voice of fear over one of the variants eventually having a much higher mortality rate if we don't soon get this thing under control is rising in volume on a weekly basis. That truly is of utmost concern.

Covid is at the roulette wheel of human life and every spin it's allowed to take increases the odds of it hitting its number and the world becoming a much darker and very, very dangerous place for the human race.

We have become, very much, a desensitized society and it angers me the number of people out there who still think the entire pandemic is some kind of government-contrived hoax.

Grow up! Time to put your adult pants on.

Meanwhile, the Hamlet of Baker Lake had funding available and was looking for volunteers to continue on with the breakfast-in-a-bag program that local schools had started before the pandemic hit last March.

Nukik-Amaruq said the schools couldn't continue with the program once their students all returned to class.

She said she mentioned to the hamlet that her team of volunteers from the hot lunch program had been idle since her return to work and would be happy to volunteer their time to organize, plan and distribute for the breakfast program.

"We distribute 100 bags each Saturday afternoon at the health

and wellness building filled with a bag of oatmeal, pancake mix, muffin mix, eggs and a carton milk.

"We've had a couple of moms mention to us that their kids are learning to bake at home because of the muffin mix in the bag. And the program does help with food to families in the community, especially with the cost of living up here.

"The breakfast-in-a-bag program ends this week, but I have applied for funding to a couple of different places for my hot lunch program, so hopefully, that funding will come through and we'll be distributing the meals around the community or the arena will be reopened."

Nukik-Amaruq's husband, Aquilla Amaruq, said when they started the hot lunch program, he found it to be very rewarding, not in financial terms but in terms of his emotions and state of mind.

He said it had benefits he didn't really foresee.

"After we started the hot meal program, we began to see a wave

"Something opened up and more people saw the need, and thought maybe they could do something too after seeing what we were doing.

"Helping out with the breakfast program while off from work at the mine (Meadowbank) was great, especially when I would see children with big smiles on their faces and so happy to have breakfast for the rest of the week."

Penguins nip Bruins 4-3 to take Fun Cup Rankin father, uncle enjoy watching sons and nephew play the game

It was the young players who took the spotlight as local tournament hockey play returned to Rankin Inlet this past Sunday, Feb. 7, in the form of the Fun Cup. And the young ones provided a great tournament, with the Penguins nipping the Bruins 4-3 to take the A Division title in overtime and earn local bragging rights this time around.

Alfred Voisey had two sons playing in the Fun Cup and they each brought home gold with Draden Voisey, 7, playing on the A Division's top team and Mikkittuq Voisey, 6, being part of the B Division champs.

Alfred said it was an exciting tournament and all the kids were amazing to watch.

He said they were all talented little hockey players who played hard all weekend.

"This was the second tournament ever for both of my boys and they were really excited about it," said Alfred.

"They were both pumped up to be playing in this tournament but we went out for awhile after their first game and got home a little late, so we didn't have any problems with them being too excited to sleep."

Alfred said the two boys are very big fans of hockey.

He said they're growing up pretty much eating, drinking and sleeping the game.

"Kids get very excited for hockey each year here because we have a very good hockey program in

Rankin that gets them started at a very early age and they get a great deal of support from the program, as well.

"The boys tell me all the things they see me do while watching me play, they're going to try in their hockey games. It excites me when I hear that kind of talk from the boys.

That's probably the best thing I hear out of them.

"I'm very excited to look forward to watching them go through the Rankin program over the years.

"I'm very happy to be Rankinmiut so my kids get the opportunity to play in these kinds of programs."

James Merritt has been an allstar calibre goalie in Rankin Inlet for many years and he gets a tremendous kick out of cheering on his nephew, Leo Gee, as he blocks shot after shot in goal, as well.

Leo's mom, Jocelyn, said her son only choose to play goalie so he could be just like his Uncle (angak) James, and his sister's statement isn't lost on Merritt.

"It's pretty awesome watching him play and I got a lot of comments from people saying that he's just like a little me, I guess, when I was at that age," said Merritt.

"He really improved a lot from the last time I watched him.

"The championship was a really good game and he played awesome in the round-robin game against that same team, winning 1-0."

Merritt said his nephew is fully aware of his uncle's play in goal over the years and looks up to him big time.

He said it means a lot to him to have his nephew see him the way

team to win that final game. It was awesome.

system because you can see the joy in him playing and it brings back memories of myself playing at those levels."

Her enthusiasm is obvious as Dorothy Tootoo talks about helping to head up a new pilot program currently taking place in Rankin Inlet.

Tootoo, of the Arctic Buying Co., is co-leading creativity for entrepreneurship, a five-week cross-cultural, international entrepreneurship course which is being piloted by the University of Minnesota.

The youth who make up the class taking part in the program are as near as Arviat, Rankin Inlet and Manitoba and as far away as different cities in the U.S. and India.

The class, which began on Feb. 3, is a combination of selfdirected study with live Zoom videoconferences in English and Inuktitut.

Roach said he has no regrets whatsoever while leaving Rankin Inlet.

He spent 15 years coach-

ing hockey in Rankin and 20 years involved with minor hockey and said there are no other sports that have come close to having the huge economic impact hockey has had to his store.

"The impact has been just mindboggling. On a typical weekend I'd typically do $30,000 to $35,000 in sales, while during a hockey tournament weekend I'd do up to $75,000.

"People here love their hockey and the fans here love to go watch it. It's a great community and a great place to live."
