Rankin U14 team goes all the way to final before bowing to Coral

It was quite the ride for the youngest team entered in the Kivalliq junior softball tournament in Rankin Inlet from July 26 to 28.

The Rankin 14-and-under players surprised everyone at the rain-soaked tourney, with the exception of their coaching staff, Dave Wiseman, Holly Mercer and Robert Kabvitok, who entered the event full of confidence in their team.

The young guns dropped

the final to Coral Harbour 14-0 after eliminating Arviat 26-13 in their semifinal, while Coral ousted Rankin's 16-and-under squad 21-4 in their semi.

Baker Lake and Whale Cove also competed at the event.

Wiseman said the tournament itself was fantastic, despite the rain.

He said every player at the event seemed to have a great time all weekend long.

"A lot of the kids who came from out of town had just as much fun visiting family and

friends and playing with other kids in Rankin as they did playing in the tournament," said Wiseman.

"The playgrounds were full every time I drove past.

"Even though it rained like a bugger almost all weekend long."

Wiseman said the players on their team were all aged 12 to 14, so it's quite possible a team or two may have taken them too lightly as the games rolled past.

Some may not have realized that the team was almost

identical to the fastball squad he, Mercer and Kabvitok had overseen the previous year.

"Holly and Robert started a fastball league this past year and asked me to help out mainly because I knew the rules for fastball," said Wiseman.

"Once we realized David (recreation co-ordinator David Clark) was putting this tournament on, we entered our fastball team from the previous year. Everyone thought it was going to be a cake walk playing against us.

"My son (Gregory Wise-

man) was asked to play with a 16-and-under team, and I told him stick with us and we'll make it all the way to the final.

He did and so did we."

Wiseman said the big advantage the young Rankin team had was that its players were used to playing together.

He said the Rankin players had been together for two years and, with the exception of Coral Harbour, the other teams made far more mental errors on the field than the young squad.

"Our team was so young

and you could tell in the final they were really nervous playing Coral.

"Not to take anything away from Coral – they played great ball all weekend – but the errors we made in the final took us out of the game before we really settled in.

"But, for a team that young to make it to the final playing against a bunch of 16-year-olds was truly awesome.

"The kids in the tournament had a pure ball and that's what these events are supposed to be all about."

Federal Liberal candidate hails from Rankin Inlet Megan Pizzo-Lyall seeks MP's chair in upcoming federal election

Tootoo bids adieu Nunavut Longtime Nunavut politician Hunter Tootoo announced on July 30 that he will not be running in the upcoming federal election.

Tootoo was a member of Nunavut's first legislative assembly from 1999 to 2013, and has been the Member of Parliament since 2015.

Tootoo, who has strong ties to the Kivalliq region, thanked his family, friends and political colleagues for helping him through a difficult time in his life.

"I encourage anyone who suffers from addictions, mental illness or trauma to seek the help they need to heal. Remember, you are not alone," Tootoo stated in a news release.

"During my time as an MP, I contributed to positive change for Nunavut. Here we have consensus government — a group of elected individuals who work together to do the right thing for all the people of Nunavut.

"Coming from that work ethic, I was able to work with members of all political stripes, as well as my cabinet colleagues, and I am proud of all the things I accomplished."

Fish feedback needed Rankin Inlet The Kagniqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) is looking for feedback from the community of Rankin Inlet on an important restoration project.

The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) has been approved for funds to conduct some coastal restoration projects, and the Rankin HTO has recommended that coastal restoration activities be focused on allowing Arctic char to climb the Sulukpaugalik River once again.

The work would be done mostly by local Inuit over the course of two weeks in 2020, with some preliminary work that could also be completed in a few weeks.

The restoration work would be a collaborative project between the HTO and KIA.

Learning schedule Rankin Inlet Listed below are the dates and subjects for the final three sessions in the Learn To program hosted at the Iqalugaarjuup Nunanga Territorial Park near Rankin Inlet.

The Learn To events are focused on getting members of the public out to the park to learn something new.

The sessions get underway at 1 p.m. and are free to attend: Aug. 10: Learn to make bannock and prepare traditional tea.

Aug. 17: Learn to play traditional Inuit games.

Aug. 24: Learn to collect a qulliq wick and how to properly light the qulliq.

Volunteers needed Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet branch of CIBC has put out the call for local volunteers to help plan its annual Run for the Cure event in Rankin this September or October.

Money raised during Run for the Cure is donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Rankin branch of CIBC will host a preliminary volunteer meeting tonight, Aug. 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Megan Pizzo-Lyall of Rankin Inlet will be the Liberal candidate in the upcoming federal election on Oct. 21.

Introduced to Nunavummiut by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Iqaluit on Thursday, Aug. 1, Pizzo-Lyall, 31, is a former student councillor and Iqaluit city councillor.

Sanikiluaq Originally from Taloyoak, she has been living in Rankin Inlet for almost three years while working for the Atuqtuarvik Corp. as its manager of operations.

Pizzo-Lyall said she has always been passionate about helping people and has always been involved with the political scene on one level or another, including the National Inuit Council in her youth and her own "small town youth council stuff."

She said she moved to Rankin to accept her current job with Atuqtuarvik Corp. and now looks upon the Kivalliq as her second home.

"I always said if I could be in politics full time, I would love it because I really enjoy helping people and I enjoy working at the political level to help make life better for all Nunavummiut," said Pizzo-Lyall.

"I'm really passionate about bringing more badly-needed housing to Nunavut, and, to do that, we have to work hard to increase the amount of money that comes to Nunavut.

"I also want to work to address the level of poverty in Nunavut, so housing, increased federal funding and attacking poverty in Nunavut is my agenda."

Pizzo-Lyall said she has a bit of an understanding of what a territorial campaign and election will be like, but it's one of those things you will never truly understand until you go through it.

She said she knows she has lots of support from the Liberal Party, which she describes as having been really good to work with.

"I really enjoy living in Rankin Inlet.

I found my second home there, so to speak," she said.

Megan Pizzo-Lyall, the Liberal candidate in Nunavut for the upcoming federal election, said she is equally at home out on the land as she is in the boardroom or political arena.

"I have a cabin in Rankin and my feet are grounded in the community.

"The people there are truly amazing and so supportive of so many different initiatives.

"Rankin Inlet is a really good community to be a part of and I'm really proud to say that."

Pizzo-Lyall also loves the outdoors and is an accomplished hunter.

She said she's always loved being out on the land and hunting is a normal way of life in Nunavut.

"I was also really well-known for having high standards and expectations of our team during my time on city

council in Iqaluit.

"And, by that, I don't just mean the council itself, but the whole team, which includes all your on-the-ground workers and having the proper systems in place and followed correctly for their support.

"I certainly plan to bring those same characteristics along with me in my quest to serve Nunavummiut as best I can as their elected representative in Ottawa.

"With Election Day already fast approaching, I plan to work hard at increasing voter turnout with a definite eye towards the younger voters in our territory. It's going to be a really great run."

Not even Mother Nature's wet-and-windy mood could dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of kids and their parents who packed into the community hall for the Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM)-sponsored Family Fun Day in Rankin Inlet on July 28.

There were treats everywhere one looked, including a cotton candy machine that made its debut this year, lots of activities to occupy young minds and busy hands, as well as the popular Bouncy Castle.

Rankin SAO Justin Merritt said AEM provides the money for the day and the hamlet takes it from there.

This year's Family Fun Day came in at $40,000.

Merritt said AEM is good at stepping up when the community needs help. It also creates summer jobs for students and holds an annual gala during the holiday season that sees $40,000 donated to four

local organizations.

He said AEM also helped this past year when the town's grader was down and the community was hit with sewer-tank problems.

"The kids just go nuts for things like Family Fun Day," said Merritt.

"My heaven, you see them up there and they're just having an absolute ball.

"This year's funding went towards all the food for the barbecue, as well as shish kebabs, the cotton candy machine, the band (Aqqut) we brought in and our big square dance."

Merritt said three hamlet councillors sit down with AEM representatives to hash out the details when they're planning special events.

He said AEM also donated $1 million during its grand opening for the Meliadine gold mine on June 19, with $750,000 going to the Ilitaqsiniq – Nunavut Literacy Council and $250,000 going towards a training centre for local and regional firefighters, as well as AEM's

own emergency-response team.

"I must say, however, in my own personal opinion, the hamlet is not getting enough for the impact they're having on the community.

"They pay both the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. ($450 million in royalties and fees during the next 15 years), but the hamlet itself gets nothing out of the economic benefits the mine brings.

"There's good wages being earned by the people who work there, obviously, but there's nothing coming to us to provide infrastructure for the community.

"They have their Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement, naturally, so the money is going to the KIA, Nunavut Tunngavik and the Government of Nunavut for land taxes but the hamlet itself should be getting some of the benefits of the mine and seeing money coming in for the community's infrastructure needs."

Massive search undertaken for boater Man missing since going in the water on July 31

With the passing of each day, hopes faded that Solomon Tulurialik of Baker Lake would be found alive after he went missing out on the water about five kilometres from the community on July 31.

The attempt to find Tulurialik, 29, has been substantial.

Search reports filed online showed that on Aug. 1 and 2, there were 24 boats with captains and spotters out searching for Tulurialik. In addition, dozens of ATVs patrolled the area and a helicopter and drones also joined the search.

Tulurialik was on the water with his son and stepson when he ran out of fuel.

The report indicated Tulurialik decided to swim to shore to retrieve more fuel, but it appears he never reached the shoreline.

The two boys are back safely in the community.

Agnico Eagle Mines offered to do an aerial search and has provided the community with underwater cameras, while the RCMP continue to provide support to family members and the community in general, according to a news release.

As of press time, the search continued.

Coral Harbour (Salliq) downed the upstart Rankin Inlet U14 team 14-0 in the championship game to claim the 2019 Kivalliq junior softball tournament in Rankin on July 28.

A total of six teams participated in the tourney, with Arviat, Baker Lake and Whale Cove also travelling to Rankin for the event.
