Food help Kivalliq Nunavut Premier Joe Savikataaq and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) president Aluki Kotierk announced more than $2 million for community food programs for children and elders as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic this past week.

The funds will be distributed directly to hamlets, to deliver community-based programming to fit their needs.

Funds will be allocated by community-size: communities under 1,000 people will receive $40,000, communities over 1,000 people will receive $90,000 and Iqaluit will receive $200,000.

These funds will provide nutritious meals for Nunavut's most vulnerable, using communities' existing expertise and networks during Covid-19.

"School closures have left too many of Nunavut's children without the breakfast or lunch programming that helped alleviate food security issues in our communities," said Premier Joe Savikataaq in a press release.

"We are committed to helping all Nunavummiut as we face this pandemic and we are very happy to be able to provide for our children and Elders in partnership with NTI during this uncertain time."

Byelection postponed Baker Lake The byelection for MLA for the constituency of Baker Lake will be postponed until Aug. 24, in light of the Covid-19 situation.

"It is vital we practise social distancing and stay home as much as possible to reduce the potential spread of Covid-19 in our communities," said Premier Joe Savikataaq in a press release.

"After receiving a request from the municipality of Baker Lake, our cabinet is fully supportive of postponing their byelection. The people of Baker Lake are doing what's best to keep their community safe."

The Commissioner of Nunavut was set to issue a formal proclamation for the writ of election, as required by section 38 of the Nunavut Elections Act, on March 23.

The writ will now be issued on July 20.

Detailed information for potential candidates will be made available by Elections Nunavut later this summer.

Public health emergency extended Kivalliq Nunavut's Minister of Health George Hickes has extended the territory's public health emergency until April 16.

"There are still no confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Nunavut and we want to maintain all our efforts to stay prepared and vigilant," said Hickes in a press release.

"I am confident we are taking the right steps to protect Nunavummiut and this extension will allow us to continue on this path."

All existing measures under the public health emergency order remain in effect.

"Thank you to all Nunavummiut doing their part to maintain social and physical distancing, staying at home and keeping their communities safe and well. It's up to all of us to plank the curve and slow the spread of Covid-19," said Hickes.

Baker Lake 'resilient' but long-term impacts unknown Community not lacking anything yet, SAO says

Everything is going as well as could be expected in Baker Lake amid the Covid-19 pandemic, said the community's senior administrative officer this past weekend.

Sheldon Dorey said everyone has concerns and worries, but the hamlet is doing everything it can to keep the community up to date with any new information on the coronavirus.

He said the hamlet distributed a number of sanitizing products to local residents when the sickness was first announced.

"We've also increased the number of daily water deliveries in the community, as well as the number of sewage pumpouts," said Dorey.

"Everything in town is all closed down, for all intents and purposes and we're not holding any social or fitness events until further notice – no commun-

ity gathering events at all.

"We're doing what every other hamlet in the Kivalliq is doing, I'd dare say."

Dorey said the community is not lacking for anything yet, at least as far as he knows.

He said having a food bank in town to distribute food to those in need has been a great help during this health crisis.

"NTI has come up with some different products and the Government of Nunavut has just announced a program that will help us in the food department.

"The local stores seem like they're doing OK with products coming in and going out and the HTO has given some caribou to those who need it in the community, so I don't think there's been shortages yet of any kind.

"Everyone, for the most part, seem to be really working together to beat this."

Dorey said a portion of people in the community take the Covid-19 threat really seriously, while some others don't take the whole thing seriously at all, at

least not yet.

He said the biggest concerns he hears constantly revolve around Baker's shopping establishments and the social distancing that is, or is not, taking place within them.

"I think we're a little too early in the game to know yet what mental impacts all this might have on some people in the community.

"People are resilient but when you're living in such close quarters for long periods of time – it will be interesting to see what happens two or three months from now.

"The hamlet's recreation department is starting to plan some activities that people can do in their own homes to, hopefully, decrease the stress and tension some people may be feeling.

"And, I think, the doctors and nurses across the region deserve a pat on the back for all they're doing in case that virus ever does arrive here, which we all hope will never happen."

Rankin player joins elite camp at Global Girls Game

A bantam hockey player from Rankin Inlet had a trip she won't forget earlier this year.

Mia Autut, 14, was selected to participate in the Global Girls Game in Signal Hill, N.L., Feb. 7 to 10.

Autut, the only player from Nunavut at the event, said she really enjoyed the experience.

She said there were a number of instructors for the different topics covered at the event and it was neat to meet so many female players and

coaches from around the country.

"I was nominated for this by my coach, David Clark, but I have no idea how or why I was selected," said Autut.

"We learned about endurance while there, as well as what it takes to be a fit hockey player and how to work effectively as a team with other people.

"We had all female instructors and they were all good at what they taught."

Autut said the mini camp also featured one hockey game where the camp's 20 participants were divided into two squads, red and white,

to face off against each other.

She said the game was a lot of fun but the overall talent really wasn't what she expected.

"I felt comfortable out on the ice and fit in pretty easily.

"It really wasn't as challenging as I thought it would be.

"They were pretty good but I thought the talent level would be much higher, probably because I'm so used to playing with the boys here in Rankin Inlet."

Autut said the biggest thing she took away from the mini camp was learning how to

workout properly in a small space.

She said that means working out effectively with absolutely no equipment of any kind.

"It was pretty cool to learn how to do that and I would strongly recommend this experience to any female player in Nunavut.

"If they get the chance they should take it because it's a really good experience.

"They showed me how far you can go in hockey and how much fun you can have getting there. And it's so much fun to meet a lot of different people from a lot of different places and learn about their culture."

Special moments in Kivalliq hockey Northern News Services

Just to change the subject away from Covid-19 for a week anyway – I was recently asked what was my favourite moment or game reffing for almost two decades in Rankin Inlet.

Wow! Didn't really realize just how many special moments there were for me until I was asked that question.

Rather than just one or two, here is a random breakdown of Kivalliq hockey's greatest moments as seen through the eyes of a zebra.

For sheer tension, Keith (Butchy) Sigurdson winning three draws in his own end with the Baffin pressing to tie the score with an extra attacker on the ice during the final game of a junior C Challenge Cup was incredSanikiluaq ible.

Arena ready for use as makeshift hospital Large facility in Rankin Inlet can be converted into Covid-19 treatment centre, if necessary

Rankin Inlet recreation co-ordinator David Clark and his crew have readied the new arena to be used as a relief hospital should Covid-19 appear and spread throughout the community.

Normally he and his staff would be hard at work preparing for the community's biggest bash of the year, Pakallak Tyme, which was scheduled to run during the first week of May. However, these days, Clark has more time to catch up on his yearend paperwork, now that the entire community is crippled by the threat of Covid-19 and community gatherings are strictly taboo. So instead of preparing ways to make people smile and laugh, the recreation staff have prepared the new arena for

the suffering and hoping it's never needed.

Clark said his crew have been working their butts off cleaning the building during the past three weeks so it's ready to go if needed.

"The head nurse and a doctor from our local health centre, as well as our fire chief and a representative from the Department of Health, came to take a look at the facility," said Clark.

"We did a walk-through of the arena and I assured them the building would be spic and span if needed.

"We finished the job this past Friday, so, basically, our arena is locked again now until we're given the OK to start having activities again or it's called into use as a makeshift hospital.

"So that's where we're at with our new arena."

Clark said he's attending a meet-

ing with hamlet administration this week to discuss Pakallak Tyme and the Ski-Doo races.

He said there's not much anyone can do about the situation if the lockdown remains in place.

"To me, yes, you have to follow the direction given by your government but, at the same time, you have to try and normalize some kind of living for everyone in our community.

"I was pretty disappointed when I was told we had to shut the arena down and put snow across our outdoor rinks on Williamson Lake.

"It hurts our community in more ways than one. People don't realize the benefits these facilities and programs bestow on people in general.

"I think the mental health of some folks and their sense of well-being is being compromised at this time, for sure."
