Bootlegging charges Baker Lake Officers of the Baker Lake department of the RCMP seized a large amount of alcohol and charged a local resident with bootlegging following an investigation into allegations of bootlegging in the community on April 21.

RCMP report that during the course of the investigation, the Baker Lake officers executed a search warrant at a warehouse, which resulted in the large seizure of alcohol consisting of 60 26-ounce bottles of whiskey for illegal sale in the community with an estimated street value of $15,000.

A 50-year-old woman from Baker Lake has been charged with keeping liquor for sale without lawful authority to do so, contrary to the Liquor Control Act. The woman's next scheduled court appearance is July 27 in Baker Lake.

The RCMP remind residents of Baker Lake that anyone with information in relation to bootlegging in the community is asked to please call the Baker Lake RCMP at 867-793-0123 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. A tip can also be sent by text to Crime Stoppers. The process is completely secure and anonymous. Text NWTNUTIPS plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).

Tax slips delayed Kivalliq The Department of Family Services' Income Assistance Division has informed Nunavummiut that T5007 tax slips for 2019 Income Assistance recipients have been further delayed and will be issued by mail the week of May 18.

To provide greater flexibility to those who may be experiencing hardships during the Covid-19 outbreak, the Canada Revenue Agency has deferred the filing date deadline for 2019 tax returns for individuals until June 1.

For further questions about T5007 tax slips and what income assistance recipients can do, they are asked to please call their community income assistance worker.

For those who choose to file their income tax early, the income assistance worker can provide them with an estimate of their T5007. They will, however, be required to file an amended income tax return once the T5007 is mailed in May.

Covid-19 update Kivalliq Premier Joe Savikataaq has announced April 22 that through the Nunavut Development Corp., the Government of Nunavut is funding seamstresses to make 5,000 face masks for Elders, Nunavummiut with underlying health conditions, and non-medical first responders, such as firefighters.

A minimum of 500 face masks have been set aside immediately for Nunavut air travellers to comply with Transport Canada's new requirements for travellers.

The masks will be made of cotton, are washable, reusable and made according to national standards and guidelines.

The mask are not meant to replace other measures such as social distancing and washing hands, but to give an additional layer of protection. Simple how-to instructions are being developed so people can sew their own at home.

As of April 24, the total number of people under investigation to date in Nunavut is 530, with 253 people still being under investigation, and 277 people are no longer under investigation.

There are still no confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Nunavut.

Making a difference

Small group of volunteers are friends to Rankin families in need

A small group has been making a big effort to lend a helping hand to local families in need, including overseeing a student lunch giveaway for students of all three schools in Rankin Inlet.

Kelly Clark-Lindell – a member of the group, along with Belinda Udjuk, Amanda Eecherk, Tara Clements and Trevor Nordmon – said the group receives strong support in its efforts from the hamlet's recreation crew.

She said April Wadland originally started a food hamper project about six Sanikiluaq weeks ago by gathering donations in the community for families in need.

"I volunteered to help out with that and, from that point on, we continued doing it once a week with funding support from Agnico Eagle Mines and the hamlet," said Lindell, "so now we're giving out 30 hampers a week to families in need (the family names come from the RCMP's Christmas hamper list or a list from the local food bank) filled with cleaning supplies and a gift card to a local store for food purchases.

"While we were doing the hampers, we saw the need to also try and get food to the kids out of school, so we conducted a trial run on the 24th to give out big lunches to any kid attending any of our three schools in Rankin.

"We gave out 180 lunch bags in total.

It was scheduled to run from 10 to 11 a.m., but we ran out at 10:55 and there were probably about 10 more kids who came after that, so we're now going to shoot for 200 and, starting this week, we're going to do it twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"We have enough funding available to cover the initiative for at least six weeks and, if it's still needed at that point, we'll see what may be available to help us continue on with it."

Lindell said funding for the first two months of the lunch initiative came from the Department of Health's Community Wellness program, which gave $15,000 of the money usually sent to the schools for their breakfast and/or snack programs to the hamlet to be used in a food-specific initiative.

She said the funds are normally sent to the local district education authority, which then disperses it among the Rankin schools.

"Not all of the volunteers within the group are teachers and they're being supported by their supervisors to take time out of their day to organize and help out

with this initiative, so we're very thankful to them for that, as well.

"I was given an anonymous donation of $1,000 to be used for the pizza movement with the Slapshot Canteen in Rankin right now, so, also on the 24th, we randomly inserted 25 gift certificates in the lunch bags that people could use to purchase a large pepperoni pizza for their family. That was pretty awesome. In fact, the whole pizza thing going on in Rankin right now is very, very cool.

"We don't know who received the certificates, but we do know they were probably pretty excited to find them and it also helps support a local business, so I was pretty proud and excited about it – just as I'm super proud of the ladies in our group volunteering to do these different initiatives that do help make a difference in our community."

Keeping skills in view Weekly challenge motivates students to be active and involved

The Skills Canada Nunavut At Home Skills Challenge is taking another tasty direction this week with the build a burger cooking challenge.

Skills Canada Nunavut launched the At Home Skills Challenge as a way to continue to help students learn skills in the trades, services and technology sectors in wake of the closure of all Nunavut schools for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year due to Covid-19.

The program sees a new At Home Skills Challenge released each Monday, with students having until the following Friday to send a photo of themselves doing the challenge, as well as a photo of their finished product.

The burger challenge began this past Monday, April 27 and this time around the entire family is asked to get involved, pooling their creativity to come up with a unique burger using any variety of patty and bun to fuel their creative juices.

The use of country food and homemade bun is encouraged as families have fun working together to create their own culinary masterpiece.

Billard said those responsible for the Iqaluit competition have always been passionate about getting kids involved with skilled trades and the At Home Skills Challenge is a creative way to continue those efforts while Nunavut schools are closed.

He said everyone involved was disappointed when this year's Skills Nunavut competition had to be cancelled, so, when he saw skills at home coming up on his Facebook feed, he began boosting the challenge on his school's Facebook page to encourage local kids to take part in it.

"I saw it as a really cool initiative and a cool way to keep kids involved and in touch with Skills despite the

fact this year's competition has been cancelled," said Billard.

"As soon as I saw it on the Skills Canada Nunavut Facebook page, I immediately shared it with our school's page to encourage the students here in Arviat to participate in it.

"I give the folks at Skills Nunavut kudos for keeping on the go in the midst of a very trying situation and making sure kids were still aware of and involved in, activities that promote the skill trades.

"I've always been a big advocate for the skill trades because, I think, that's where most of our students will gravitate towards when they graduate from high school rather than university and the academic pursuits – Nunavut is in dire need of all skill-

No change in safety-first approach with airports division

It's business as usual always putting safety first in maintaining Kivalliq airports, Covid-19 pandemic or no Covid-19 pandemic, said the director of the Nunavut Airports Division of the Department of Economic Development and Transportation.

Darrin Nichol said the department's level of service has not changed one iota during the virus challenge.

He said the department's regional crews continue to do their jobs making sure the runways are safe, the airports are compliant, they're suitable for both regular scheduled flights and cargo flights and passengers are safe travelling in and out.

"Really, nothing has changed due to Covid-19 in terms of what we're doing at the airport," said Nichol. "For sure flights have been reduced, given the environment, but our focus hasn't changed. It remains status quo and we haven't really changed anything with what we're doing."

Nichol said there's been no change in the number of hours dedicated to maintaining the Rankin airport despite the reduction in flights. He said that hasn't changed in any of Nunavut's 24 airports that his department oversees.

"We post our hours in the Canada Flight Supplement, we book within those hours and those are the hours we continue to maintain. Nothing has become any easier, or more difficult,

with maintaining the Rankin airport because of the current climate.

"We have a good crew in Rankin Inlet. We maintain the airport in a partnership with the hamlet and they've done amazing throughout anything and everything.

"But, again, the focus of maintaining runways and maintaining airports hasn't changed – it hasn't become easier, nor has it really become any harder – remaining pretty much status quo as it was before and as it is now."

Nichol said while there has been a noticeable reduction in the number of flights coming into Rankin each week due to the Covid-19 situation, there's still regularly scheduled passenger flights, charter flights and cargo flights coming into the community.

He said his department is doing the exact same thing across the board in every community it oversees that it was doing earlier.

"There's no doubt there's been a reduction in traffic and no doubt that most of the general public notices this or they're aware of the situation.

"It might not jive with what they (the public) think, but they can rest assured that hasn't changed our business-as-usual focus in making sure these airports are being maintained in a top-notch, A1 manner and our focus is always safety first.

"We have great people working at our airports across the Kivalliq, Baffin and Kitikmeot regions, who are very dedi-

Hamlet puts strict rules into effect for trial bingo game

The hamlet of Rankin Inlet took a cautious step towards life as usual by allowing a bingo game to be held in the community on a trial basis in support of its recreation department this past Friday, April 24.

Rankin rec co-ordinator David Clark said he had been pushing for a game to be allowed by hamlet council for awhile and presented a plan for the game during a special meeting of hamlet council on April 23.

Clark said the game, at this point, is a one-time deal and the results will be assessed at hamlet council this week.

"Council will review how things went and get feedback from the community and, if everyone followed the rules that we posted, I can't see why we couldn't be doing this for the time being," he said.

"If a case of Covid-19 were to come to Rankin Inlet, then that would be a different issue and this kind of thing just couldn't happen.

"But, in the meantime, we're losing a lot of our fundraising ability and the bills don't go away. And, at the same time, it gives some of our community members something to do on an evening or so."

Bingo is, indeed, a huge fundraiser for the hamlet and many organizations would struggle to exist without it in the community.

Clark said he's been trying to keep people updated on

the situation as much as he can but, since the Covid-19 shutdown happened before a meeting could be held to allocate the weekly game night slots, he doesn't even have an existing bingo schedule at the moment.

He said until things change with the current situation, there's just no sense in moving ahead to create a new schedule.

"Hamlet council has been meeting in the rec hall because council chamber is just too small to practise social distancing, so it was kind of nice for me to have the actual area that was going to be used available to demonstrate how we were going to run this bingo.

"The councillors had questions and concerns, naturally and they also brought up some good points that we implemented into the rules for this game, such as special times dedicated to those in the community with compromised immune systems to purchase their tickets, as well as a special time for Elders too.

"A lot of what was planned for the bingo – special purchase time for Elders, lines on the floors and Plexiglas separating the workers from those buying the cards – are all ideas we borrowed from our grocery stores.

"Concerns were also raised of other hamlets maybe copycatting our efforts, as Rankin is often seen as a leader in our region and bingo is often seen as a gathering, so the councillors had concerns

the possibility of other bingo games could be looked at.

"Again, I'd like to stress all this is not to say this is going to keep happening. This is a one-time trial and, if successful, it will probably still be reviewed on a week-to-week basis.

"The funds raised for this

game will go directly to the recreation department. We've lost six bingo games during this time and it's hurting our department financially, that's for sure.

"We haven't been running as many events as we normally do because of Covid-19 but we still have bills to pay.

Running two big buildings is not cheap.

"Things should go smoothly if everyone follows the rules and, given the situation and the fact we're all adults, then, as a community, no one should have any difficulty doing that in order to help protect everyone's safety."
