Baker Lake residents get through major fire with a little help from their friends

The hamlet of Baker Lake recently sent out a letter of appreciation to all those who helped them overcome the fire that destroyed most of the hamlet's municipal fleet of vehicles in January.

Senior administrative officer Sheldon Dorey said Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) was there for the hamlet right off the bat.

He said in-town companies, such as Peter's Expediting Ltd., Arctic Fuel and BLCS, provided various levels of assistance for a short period of time until the hamlet received its new vehicles.

"The in-town companies were a great help by offering transportation, carrying stuff up to AEM, driving people to and from, and all those kinds of things," said Dorey.

"Aurora Ford quickly found a couple of trucks for us and the hamlet of Enterprise, NWT, and the Little Red River

Cree Nation of Alberta helped a great deal by agreeing to take a later shipping date on trucks that had been identified for them.

"So, Hay River Ford was able to sell us the two vehicles already identified for those two communities, and then they found us a chassis, as well, which worked out well for us because we had a tank here we were able to mount upon that chassis.

"We really owe a lot to the two communities that allowed us to take the vehicles that were going to them because, if not, we would have had to start looking around for less-appealing vehicles in the south that were not really specifically designed for the North and we would have had to wait a lot longer to get our vehicles."

Dorey said when hamlets are looking to acquire new water or sewer trucks, the orders are for those specific vehicles.

He said a company like Aurora Ford may have a chassis, but they just don't

stock four or five sewer trucks at any time.

"These vehicles are almost built individually when you're ordering them.

"You give them the specifications that you want – extra springs, this lever or that lever – and they take it from there.

"The municipality also received tremendous immediate and ongoing support from the Community and Government Services team, in particular, with regards to the logistics and financial requirements associated with air transportation for three newly acquired vehicles.

"The Hamlet of Arviat contacted us and offered one of their sewage trucks to assist until we can rebuild our fleet at sealift time and, again, one final tip of the hat to the hamlet of Enterprise and the Little Red River Cree Nation, as well as Aurora Hay River Heavy Truck Sales, for the most-appreciated parts they played in getting two new complete sewer trucks and a chassis to us in so short a time."

Call for nominations Kivalliq Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019 Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP), which will see up to 10 winning teams in three prize categories share up to $10 million in awards.

One exceptional team will be the deserving recipient of a cool $1 million at this year's awards, while up to four teams will be awarded up to $500,000 each, and up to seven teams with members 30 years of age or younger will be awarded up to $100,000 each.

The Youth prize category seeks to inspire the next generations of Arctic innovators to develop projects and plans that address issues and opportunities relevant to them.

AIP nominations will be accepted until Oct. 15.

Council days in Baker Baker Lake The resurrected student council at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School (JASS) created a total of 17 days worth of activities to help celebrate Nunavut's 20th birthday in Baker Lake from April 1 to 17.

The daily activities ranged from small events, such as trivia questions and showing your Nunavut spirit by wearing Nunavut colours to school, to a community gathering to open a time capsule and an afternoon house league event at JASS to launch the students into spring break on a positive note.

Volleyball gold Naujaat Team Naujaat captured the gold medal in the men's division of the annual Gold Diggers volleyball tournament in the Kitikmeot's Gjoa Haven from April 3 to 7.

A second men's team from Naujaat, the Warriors, took bronze at the event.

Community should be proud of dog effort Northern News Services

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt is probably bang on when he says there are still people who would prefer every stray dog caught in Rankin Inlet be shot, rather than shipped to a new home in the south.

But Rankin has come an incredible way in the way dogs, in general, are treated in the community since I first moved here almost 21 years ago – and that's a good thing the community should be very proud of.

No longer do you see dogs tied-up on a few feet of rope, barely able to stretch their bodies and having to eat in the same space where they relieve themselves of their feces and urine.

And, the vast majority of dogs in Sanikiluaq Rankin Inlet now – either through bylaw and Page Burt at the Nanuk Lodge, or during the annual visit of a team of animal health-care professionals from the Winnipeg-based Tuxedo Animal Hospital – all have their vaccinations, making for a much safer dog population and, as such, a much safer community.

You rarely see the old skin-andbone dogs of years past running loose in the hamlet and causing a panic, nor do you see dogs with obvious marks of physical abuse on their bodies.

The odd report of a group of overzealous kids bugging a tied-up dog and making it angry is all that appears, at least, to remain of the rampant abuse of man's best friend that used to happen far more frequently in the community more than a decade or two ago.

It's been interesting times recently at Tuugaaruk High School in Naujaat, with some happenings producing smiles among the students and others being more of the heartbreaking variety.

Specially selected students and staff members got to interact with members of the Arctic Expedition team trying to recreate explorer John Rae's famous trek during its 165th anniversary,

while the winners of the local science fair could not compete at the regional fair when their plane could not land in Arviat.

Finally, students were quite involved with the territory's 20th anniversary celebrations at Tuugaaruk, especially an exercise that saw them write why they love Nunavut on a button and post it on a Nunavut flag hanging in the school lobby.

Finding their forever homes Loose dogs rarely put down in Rankin Inlet anymore

A new approach by bylaw officers dealing with stray animals had led to an almost zero kill rate in Rankin Inlet the last two years.

The new approach was initiated by Rankin Fire Chief Mark Wyatt, who said a lot has changed since the hamlet's approach to loose dogs a few years ago.

He said the community bylaw, which he's trying to have amended, still reads the same in that a bylaw officer is supposed to make every effort to contact the owner once he

or she picks-up a stray dog, although it can often be difficult to find out who the owner actually is.

“Back years ago, bylaw officers didn't post the dogs on Facebook or anything like that,” said Wyatt.

“If they picked-up a loose dog, they would chain it up down behind search and rescue or at the dump, and the onus was on the owners to check if bylaw had their dogs tied up or not.

“If bylaw had the dog for two days and nobody came forward to claim it, they would simply take it to the dump and shoot it.

“A lot of dogs were put down that way and that's still the way it happens in a lot of hamlets – and there are still people in the community who think that's the way it should be, but there are many who don't.”

Wyatt said proof the approach is working is that there are far less loose dogs in the community than there were two years ago.

He said the bylaw officers are determined in their efforts to catch any loose dog reported and just as determined to find the pet's owner once he is caught.

“We take a picture of the dog and post it on Facebook, which has been a great tool in helping us reunite a good number of dogs with their owners and families.

“We register and vaccinate every dog that we pick up and, if we don't find the owner, or the owner decides he no longer wants the dog, we ship it south to our rescue agency in Winnipeg, which finds a new home for it.

“So dogs that we've pickedup in Rankin Inlet have ended-up in homes, pretty much, right across Canada.

“This past year, counting the puppies, we sent out about 130 dogs and they've all found good homes. I personally know several people who've adopted dogs from us and they're doing great.”

Wyatt said Calm Air has been a big help in helping bylaw find new homes for unwanted animals in Rankin Inlet.

He said the airline covers the cost of shipping the dogs out, which makes the whole process a lot easier for everyone involved.

“We really have to take our hats off to Calm Air for all the help they've given us with our new approach, and we work closely with Page (Burt) – who vaccinates all the dogs for us – to get all the dogs shipped safely out of Rankin.

“Our kill rate is actually down to zero, unless it's an aggressive dog that bites somebody and needs to be put down, or a dog that is very, very sick.

“We don't shoot dogs just for the sake of shooting dogs in Rankin Inlet anymore.”

He said, for the most part, the loose dogs the bylaw officers pick up are

not aggressive.

“We'll get calls saying an aggressive dog is loose and attacking kids, but, when we go there, no child has been attacked,” he said.

“A lot of these dogs actually like to play with kids, but, if there's a loose dog that you don't know, then it's natural

to be concerned for your children and be worried about the fact you don't know if the dog is going to attack.

“So we make every effort to pick-up the loose dogs as quickly as we can, but rarely do we find dogs in the community that are really aggressive.”

Edmonton teams salute Rankin Rock ‘B' peewee team's special needs player

Referees, players on the Valleyview Icebears and their coaches reached out to the Rankin Rock peewee 'B' team to produce a couple of incredible memories for the captain of the Rankin team, Jackie Nakoolak.

Rankin coach Ben Porter pulled the referee aside when the Rock team was warming up for its first game against Yellowknife to let the ref know the Rankin squad had a player with special needs on the team, and he was going to go on the ice, skate around a bit, slide and then come off.

Porter then told the referee what Nakoolak really wanted was to get a penalty in a real tournament game.

"The refs told me to throw him over the boards and they'd give him a penalty for too many men on the ice and he could go into the box," said Porter.

"They gave him the minor penalty and he went into the penalty box, took off his helmet and gloves, and put his hands on his face like he did something terribly, terribly, wrong.

"We thanked the refs at the end of the game and they said it was a beautiful thing we were doing, and really nice to see a great kid like

Jackie being allowed to play hockey."

The Rock 'B' team was placed in a bracket far too high to be competitive in, so the scoreboard was the least of everyone's concerns as the weekend rolled past.

Travel organizer and hockey mom Rachele Verbeek of Rankin Inlet said despite being annihilated every game, the kids on the 'B' team had a fantastic time in Edmonton.

She said despite the lopsided scores, the Rankin kids just kept smiling throughout the whole thing and they were rewarded for their resilience with another special moment.

"The penalty given to Jackie in the first game kind of set the tone that the Rankin 'B' team was here to just have fun and couldn't be competitive in that bracket," said Verbeek.

"By the third game against the Valleyview Icebears, it seemed every team had heard about Jackie and, with four minutes left in the third period, the coach of that team started yelling at our coaches to put No. 96 on the ice.

"So they put Jackie out there and it was just an amazing moment to watch all the kids from both teams come together to help him score two goals.

"There wasn't a dry eye in the arena watching that

happen, and then they gave him the game star which was pretty darn impressive."

Porter said everybody cheered at the top of their lungs when Nakoolak scored his goals.

He said all the players mobbed him so much he looked almost like some kind of a celebrity on the ice.

"The players on the other side were all really happy to give Jackie a special moment and every one of them gave him a high five before he came off the ice and passed me the puck to hang onto for him," said Porter.

"Then during our last game, the coach from the other team asked if we'd like to just mix the players up and play a game for fun.

"Once we made sure the players on both teams were OK with it, that's what we did and everyone had a blast just playing for fun.

"It couldn't have ended any better when the team that won the gold medal in the other arena came all the way down, in their gear, to have pictures taken with Jackie and us.

"The captain of their team gave Jackie his gold medal.

Jackie was ecstatic through all this and I'm sure he'll never forget his weekend at that tournament – and I don't think I'll ever forget those moments until the day I die."

Community: Rankin Inlet Interest: Numerous Mia is this edition's youth of the week for her participation in a number of programs and initiatives in her community.

She is also being recognized for giving it her all while laying down vocals for one of the songs produced by a group of students and the Darkspark team in Rankin Inlet in December 2018.
