Health minister George Hickes states in a news release that "now is not the time to relax measures or loosen our guidelines. We need to remain committed in order to protect our communities."

Emergency extended Kivalliq Nunavut's public health emergency was extended until April 30, stated a news release issued this past week by territorial Minister of Health George Hickes.

"Nunavut's efforts to slow the spread of Covid-19 have proven effective so far," wrote Hickes in the release.

"Now is not the time to relax measures or loosen our guidelines. We need to remain committed in order to protect our communities."

Supplies given out Rankin Inlet The Hamlet of Rankin Inlet distributed one bag of cleaning supplies per household to residents of the community on April 16.

The initiative was aimed at helping the community to do its part in helping to keep Covid-19 at bay.

Police reminder Kivalliq The RCMP have issued a news release reminding parents to be extra vigilant when it comes to what the internet is being used for and the types of messages being sent and received on home computers, cellphones and mobile devices with access to the web.

The police advisory, released by Cpl. Jamie Savikataaq, reminds parents of the potential dangers of the internet, especially with children and youth being at home and having to social distance from friends and extended family.

In the current situation due to the Covid-19 threat, the region's children and youth are quite likely to be accessing the internet more often in order to communicate with others and occupy their time.

The RCMP reminder to parents of the internet's dark side comes shortly after a Rankin Inlet man was arrested and charged with child luring earlier this month.

"While the internet can be a fantastic tool for learning, connecting families and friends and providing distractions for children and youth, it can also be used as a tool to lure, exploit and harm children and youth," said Savikataaq in the RCMP release. "Parents and guardians are reminded to monitor their child's internet use, given the increased screen time."

The Class of 2019 graduates are all smiles at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat on June 15. Grade 12 students on track to graduate this year are being assured their teachers and principals will work with them to ensure they complete any necessary requirements.

Schools remain closed, learning packages prepared

Citing the wellbeing and success of Nunavut's children and youth as the top priority, Education Minister David Joanasie announced the territory's schools will stay closed to students for the rest of the 2019-20 school year on April 17.

Chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson supported the decision for Nunavut, which still hasn't had a confirmed case of the virus.

In a prepared statement announcing the decision, Joanasie said it's now even more important that all school staff report to work on April 21 with Nunavut students having already missed more than a month of class time due to the threat of Covid-19.

"The Department of Education has developed guidelines to help school staff prepare learning packages to meet the specific needs of their students," said Joanasie.

"Staff will work with students and their families to determine how best to support learning ... teachers will prioritize literacy and numeracy for students in kindergarten to Grade 9, while strengthening the skills and knowledge that have been taught so far this school year.

"Teachers and administrators will evaluate the individual situations for high school students. Some students may already have completed the credits they need to graduate, while others may need to complete specific courses to be eligible.

"Teachers may provide opportunities for students to upgrade their marks, or earn the credits they need, by completing suggested assignments and projects – and they will review student outcomes to date, align them with skills that need to be strengthened and take into consideration what is possible for them to

accomplish at home."

Joanasie said there will be a strong focus on supporting health and wellness, literacy and numeracy for all students; including household projects and activities that allow families to learn together – reading together, journal writing and projects that draw on the creativity of students.

He said many families are out on the land and may not be able to receive student learning packages, but the department encourages on-the-land activities such as hunting and fishing, which complement student learning.

Realizing Nunavut's technological limitations, especially in some of the territory's smaller communities, continued learning for students will not be entirely online.

"Learning packages will take many forms – paper-based, activity-based and electronic – however, all of them will give students an opportunity to further their learning," said Joanasie. "(In addition to monitoring progress where possible) staff will also support students by assessing their work prior to the school closure to determine final grades and by preparing year-end report cards."

Nunavut's high school students and their families are reminded that all departmental exams are cancelled for the school year.

Grade 12 students on track to graduate are being assured that their principals and teachers will work with them to ensure they complete any necessary requirements.

Joanasie said staff will also plan and prepare for the 2020-21 school year, particularly with the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic in mind.

He said many students and families recognized the staff members who volunteered to return to work and prepare learning packages, expressing apprecia-

tion for all their handwork.

"As a parent and as minister of Education, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your dedication and enthusiasm and thank you for your efforts and commitment to Nunavut's students.

"We all want the best for our children and youth. As such, the Department of Education appreciates the support and patience Nunavummiut (and its education partners) have shown during these unprecedented times.

"The uncertainty has not been easy, but we will make it through, together."

Dance videos for Rankin Inlet Elder's 81st birthday go viral

A most welcome and fun break from the self-isolation doldrums that are an all-too-familiar part of battling Covid-19 came about as a son searched for a unique way to say happy birthday to his dad in Rankin Inlet this past week.

Robert Kabvitok's dad, Jack, had accepted the fact he would quietly celebrate his 81st birthday in Rankin on Saturday as his community continued to do its part to keep Nunavut Covid-19 free.

What Jack didn't know at the time was that it may be quiet on his birthday, but that didn't mean a small crowd of people couldn't kick up their heels to help him celebrate earlier in the week; and they had the choice of whether to do it inside or out.

Robert said since people couldn't go outside much because of Covid19, there was no way his family could hold a singing or dancing contest to help his dad celebrate his birthday.

However, Robert has been heavily involved with the local sports scene as a player and coach for many years now and, during that time, he has become rather well-known for quietly mulling things over in his mind until an idea starts to take shape that usually results in some sort of activity that people in the community get to enjoy participating in or watching.

And, this past week, the wheels inside his head were spinning.

"I was trying to think of some

sort of way we could hold a jigging contest without everyone gathering in one spot like we usually do," said Robert.

"Holly (Mercer) said she thought it would actually be better if I danced on the video, but I disagreed with her and didn't really want to do it until she pointed out that it would make more sense to my parents, so I agreed and that's how it started.

"It was just going to be for any of my Facebook friends who wanted to enter a little jigging contest for Dad's 81st birthday and maybe win a little prize, you know, but it just took off."

What actually happened was Robert didn't think of adjusting his privacy settings for the video and people started sharing it.

The video went viral by Kivalliq standards and, despite all his planning to keep things low key, Robert realized the horse had already jigged its way to freedom and the contest was now open to anyone who wanted to take part in it.

"I still hadn't committed myself to doing it but I started getting fresh requests and found myself realizing it was for my dad turning 81, so I just went with it," said Robert.

A few videos would be randomly drawn from those entered and Robert asked family members to pitch in a bit of money so they would have cash prizes for the ones drawn. His relatives started giving immediately.

The prize numbers grew as family members donated and soon other folks in the community started to text Robert asking if they could

donate to the prize pool, as well and it didn't end there.

The horse that left the barn decided to go for an all-out run and people from communities outside of Rankin began to contact Robert to tell him they loved what he was doing, enjoyed watching all the people jigging and they, too, were donating to the prize pool.

More than 120 entries were submitted, with roughly half of them featuring dancers jigging outdoors for at least 30 seconds.

The prize pool was finally frozen at, from first to fifth, $400, $350, $300, $150 and $80.

"This went further than I had any right to expect," said Robert "and seeing trees and different landscapes in the videos from the Baffin and places down south really made it more fun.

"It was also Holly's idea for our video to be shot outdoors, so she nailed everything that would work well for this.

"It all just worked out great."

Education Minister David Joanasie rebounded from a shaky performance at the press conference announcing the callback of 93 teachers to Nunavut to deliver a strong message on April 17 that, hopefully, marks the point where Joanasie realized he must start asserting more influence and leadership over his department.

Great vision and leadership is essential in one of the Government of Nunavut's (GN) most critical positions.

To accomplish that, Joanasie needs to turn his diplomacy skills to maximum and extend a recognizable Sanikiluaq olive branch to the staff at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat that will have them feeling like they're more than an afterthought following two reported attacks on staff in separate incidents in late February.

This approach may buy the minister a ticket to show up at Tuugaalik High School, when it's safe to do so in light of the coronavirus.

Candy bunny pays a visit Easter Feature

A small group of community volunteers gave the kids a break from the indoors to venture outside and search for some hidden sweets when they held the annual Easter candy hunt in Chesterfield Inlet on April 12.

Volunteers closely monitored every aspect of the event to ensure all protocols were closely followed in relation to Covid-19.

Company fills new orders amid pandemic Arctic Buying doing its part against Covid-19

Arctic Buying has maintained its focus and determination to live up to its handle as Amazon of the North and it's put the company reputation on the line to help deliver the tools badly needed by frontline workers in the ongoing battle against Covid-19.

The venture is also ensuring it's prepared to shift gears when the challenge of Covid-19 is met and business life returns to normal.

Arctic Buying has been in business for the better part of a decade; building a sterling reputation across the Kivalliq and beyond for its ability to pick up just about anything and everything and ship the goods to just about anywhere.

The company can take care of furnishing clients with all their Northern needs – accepting, amalgamating and forwarding parcels to their final destinations, often at less cost than other methods of delivery.

Rather than opening a retail outlet, per se, in Rankin Inlet and competing directly

with local merchants, CEO Tara TootooFotheringham said the company prefers adhering to its tried-and-true tradition of supporting existing Northern operations.

By placing its two-person head office in Rankin Inlet, Arctic Buying acts as the eyes and ears for the local business community in the south at Arctic Buying's Winnipeg distribution centre.

Tootoo-Fotheringham said Arctic Buying conducts business in the North by listening to people, hearing what they need and want and having its distribution office amalgamate those needs.

"We currently have nine people in Winnipeg involved with overseeing and fulfilling that process," said Tootoo Fotheringham, "and, also, having previously operated both a bed and breakfast and restaurant in Rankin Inlet – that allowed me to better understand what food items and other goods could help with the issue of food insecurity by being accessed in the south and made readily available and affordable there.

"The unwanted introduction of Covid19 has meant that, as a business, we've

had to adapt very quickly to a changing situation with no previous experience of any kind with a pandemic that pushes us like this, both personally and professionally.

"We, definitely, are having to wait a lot longer to get things and we're having to source products from places we've never accessed before because some of the businesses we were dealing with are no longer open or their hours are staggered, so that negative impact has made it a challenge for us to run business as usual.

"We've also had to diversify to do our part against the virus – stepping into a medical area that we'd only previously dabbled in – sourcing masks, gloves and gowns because people see us as being the ones first able to see these items and confirm they're legitimate.

"We just accepted the rush delivery of two thermometers from China in order to confirm they're acceptable to a customer needing 2,000 of them.

"We're putting our name on the line to ensure these items are legitimate and accessible in the fight against Covid-19."

Delivering packages of caring Easter treats to remind Elders someone is thinking of them

Elders in Chesterfield Inlet received a fun-filled Easter pack as a happy reminder that they are in the thoughts of plenty of Canadians at just about any time, but especially during the trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic across the globe.

Community volunteer Ana Leishman helped oversee the distribution of the Elder Easter packs. She said this was the third year for the Easter treats in the community.

She said she got started with the project when she was put in touch with the Facebook-based group Northern Canada Mini Projects,

liked what she heard about the initiative and found the group to be well-intentioned and super organized.

"The group's project organizer initially approached another staff member at the school who wasn't really prepared to get involved at that time, so she passed it along to me," said Leishman.

"I then contacted the project organizer, who is amazing and we've been working together on various projects ever since.

"With the Elder's Easter project, we try to focus on things compatible with that time of year, such as things that would come in handy while being out fishing, or just spending more time outside with family and enjoy-

ing the spring weather.

"The Easter packages all contain similar things such as tea, jams, crackers, cookies and other little goodies, but then they may also have something specific to that Elder – things they like to enjoy such as any hobbies they might have – because we provide as much information on the individual Elders as we can and then work with the group to try and have the packages personalized to the Elders as much as possible."

Leishman said the Easter packages are nice things to give the Elders and, in some ways, their arrival at the door is a pleasant surprise with pleasant thoughts to go along with it.

"The packages are also

really appreciated and welcomed by the Elders.

"And, obviously, this year has been very different and, I think, having something that shows our Elders people are thinking about them who hope they are well and who take the time to show that by sending a little something makes a nice thoughtful impact on them.

"Everyone likes to feel thought of and I think that's the one thing we strive to do in our community, is to let people know that we might not see you every day but we do think about you.

"It's a nice way to recognize they've had a long life and done a lot of amazing things, so here's a little something to treat themselves for all they've accomplished."

My partner Manasie Naullaq got this bear April 3 between Sanirajak and Iglulik. The bear got angry after the initial shot and turned on him. After a little running away, he was able to return and harvest the bear. A fat 9-footer.
