Easter Games come with crabs Residents come out for Whale Cove activities

Easter weekend games in Whale Cove saw a packed gym, games on the ice and some impressive crab hauls.

On the first day of games, participants in the crab-jigging contest used socks with fish inside or dish racks with bait, letting the lines down to the bottom below the sea ice and pulling them up every 10 minutes or so.

They were catching Arctic lyre crab, an edible relative of snow crabs.

After catching crabs, participants filled up the gym for games, followed by church service and a square dance.

Gordon Jr. Okalik, recreation director for the Hamlet of Whale Cove, said Easter Sunday games included rabbit hunting on the ice, target shooting and men’s open class drag racing, with the evening seeing more games and a square dance at the gym.

On Monday, a ladies 600-class drag race held centre stage, with cod fishing in the afternoon.

“Later in the evening we tried having a movie night for the kids,” said Okalik. “It didn’t turn out as we wished, as kids weren’t listening, so we had to let them go.”

That said, he’s glad with how the events turned out and plans to prepare more for next time.

Ethan Tassiuk awarded Governor General medal

Arviat “This is a great moment for me,” said Ethan Tassiuk after returning to his hotel in Ottawa Thursday, April 21.

He had just received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall.

Tassiuk, recognized for his efforts to combat social issues in the Arviat Film Society, was one of 23 recipients to receive the medal.

He was particularly noted for his advocacy for youth resilience and community engagement, as well as fostering open discussions on sexual health awareness and bullying.

“These were the most important subjects for me,” said Tassiuk, who has been involved with film and television since 2012.

In her speech, Simon said she was grateful the recipients were nominated, because it gave her a chance to learn their stories.

“All of you being honoured today met challenges head-on, addressing the greatest needs in your communities by giving of your time and expertise,” said Simon.

“You have made a difference with your outstanding devotion, dedication and commitment. You did so without the expectation of recognition. But your work didn’t go unnoticed.”

She called it a privilege and responsibility to share their work.

“You have done good in your communities,” said Simon.

“You continue to do good. You shape our society through your actions and stories, helping others because it’s the right thing to do.”

Tassiuk said he was feeling confident heading back home to Arviat, and he’s planning to work on a new documentary-style video this summer.

Big prizes for big fish

Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Fishing Derby released its 2022 competition schedule and prizes, with tens of thousands of dollars up for grabs between trout and cod derbies in May. Top prizes for both categories include either a 2022 SkiDoo Grand touring 600 Ace or a Honda Rubicon 520. Second prizes are $9,000, then $8,000 for third place and so on for the top 10 finishers.

The trout derby will take place May 20-23 with a 50-mile boundary and list of allowable lakes, while the cod derby will take place May 27-29.

Both derbies require participants to register in advance.

Businesses offered free Covid tests

Kivalliq The Government of Nunavut is offering rapid antigen tests (RATs) and masks to Nunavut businesses that request them.

The goal of the program is to help businesses maintain their operations safely and support the health and safety of employees, while ensuring continuity of the supply chain in Nunavut.

“These RATs and masks are not for resale or public distribution,” wrote the GN’s news release April 21.

Hunter Kablutsiak’s Stage 4 kidney is working at 16 per cent capacity, but that hasn’t stopped him doing what he loves: hunting.

“He loves fox trapping, wolf hunt, wolverines hunt, caribou hunt, sea mammal hunt, any hunt,” said mother Francine Kablutsiak about the 15-year-old Arviat youth.

He’s also a hockey player for the Arviat Wolves.

In September 2020, Hunter was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease called juvenile nephronopthisis. He is currently on a ‘work up’ for a kidney

transplant, which is a term for the process of diagnosing all the medical needs of a patient.

As soon as a kidney donor is found, a transplant can be performed.

Francine said Hunter’s cousin Jackson Kablutsiak had the same condition at the same age as Hunter, and his transplant was successful.

“His kidney disease has not stopped him from what he loves to do,” said Francine. “We mainly watch closely what he eats and what he cannot eat.”

Now, Francine has taken to social media and any other means necessary to try to find a kidney donor for Hunter. Some family members have already signed up to be donors, but more are needed, said Francine, as donor testing

can take up to a year to complete all the evaluation for a match.

Hunter has A+ blood type, meaning he is eligible for transplants from people with A+/A- and O+/O-.

Francine said he is being monitored and seen every six weeks.

“They want him to get a transplant before he goes on dialysis,” she said.

“His kidney function is 16 per cent.

Dialysis would start when he goes five per cent.”

Rankin Inlet’s protective services department consists of a fire chief and a bylaw officer.

Eighteen on-call volunteers make up the rest of the fire department. They respond to about 700 calls per year, on top of hosting Easter egg hunts, veterinary clinics and so much more.

This summer, the department should be bolstered with a deputy fire chief, easing some of the burden on chief Mark Wyatt.

Despite the addition of a deputy chief, Wyatt would ideally like 10 more volunteers. And participating is not purely out of the goodness of people’s hearts: there is a stipend for being on call and fees paid for attending calls too.

It’s hard not to get inspired hearing Wyatt wax about the role of the fire department in the community and the responsibility volunteers Sanikiluaq take on.

small community, it’s even more personal.

Those who volunteer will see people they know at their worst moments, possibly even finding them deceased or on the brink of it.

Wyatt began his firefighting career as a volunteer. He talked about a motor vehicle accident he responded to in his early days.

“There were three young men in the car, all drunk,” remembered Wyatt.

“Two of them had been thrown out of the car when it rolled. The driver was still behind the wheel — broken neck. We treated him as though we were still trying to save him, so to speak, and I was directly involved in helping to extricate him and bring him out. I’m looking at this dead body, and it was the first dead body that I had ever seen. And it was like, wow. At the time, I wasn’t sure that I

could do what I do now.”

But the reality is, he continued, someone has to be there in these moments.

Someone has to attend the accidents and run into the chaos to make the best of a terrible and traumatic situation.

He couldn’t heap enough praise on the camaraderie and team that has been built through Rankin Inlet’s department, emphasizing how important mental health care is for the members to be able to perform the duties asked of them.

And it’s not an old boys club, either, as women make up the mastewart jority of the volunteer staff.

The Rankin Inlet Fire Departburnett ment does a lot for the community, and anyone interested in joining it and further bolstering that staff would be doing a tremendous service for the rest of us.

Hamlet ups funding to hire deputy fire chief

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt works 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday for the Rankin Inlet Fire Department.

He’s on call all night along with paid volunteers ready to respond to any emergencies. The only other full-time staff in the hamlet’s protective services department is a bylaw officer, who takes over as acting fire chief when Wyatt is away.

That’s why the hamlet decided in a March council meeting to boost the department’s budget by $160,000, which will increase fees to on-call volunteers and allow for the hiring of a full-time deputy fire chief.

“We do over 700 calls a year, which is a busy department,” said Wyatt, comparing that to a previous fire department he worked in that had nine full-time staff and 50 on-call volunteers for just 600 calls a year.

A deputy fire chief will provide the department more support, Wyatt more relief and also allow for more fire prevention work, such as servicing the fire extinguishers in town and checking smoke alarms.

Wyatt praised the 18 on-call volunteers the de-

partment has, but said he ideally wants 10 more.

“They work really hard,” said Wyatt. “They’re on call 24 hours a day. They get up in the middle of the night, no matter what. We respond to calls in blizzards, it doesn’t matter. We’re the only department apart from public works for the roads that works no matter what.”

Volunteers receive a stipend for being on call and fees for each call they respond to.

“We have the best trained fire department in Nunavut, no question about it,” said Wyatt.

“And we have an awful lot of people who are really dedicated to this department, not just because they get paid for what they do, but also what we do for the community in addition to responding to calls. We’re as effective as any full-time fire department with volunteers because of what we do.”

In addition to fighting fires and responding to calls, the department regularly holds community events like the Easter egg hunt, haunted firehall during Halloween and other special events. Members also fundraise for new equipment outside of the department’s budget, such as a rescue sideby-side for responding to tundra fires and taking on veterinary services in town.

“It builds sense of community in the fire de-

partment, and it’s just what we do,” said Wyatt.

“The fire department isn’t just, or shouldn’t just, be there to respond to emergencies. We should be there for the community in everything we do.”

It’s important for Wyatt that the department is involved in good times in the community, because members see the worst in their day-to-day work.

“I could tell you stories for days of terrible things that people should never, ever have to see,” said Wyatt. “But the reality of it is, if we don’t build a team that can deal with that sort of stuff nobody’s going to deal with it. That’s what fire departments are all about.”

That’s why mental health first aid, supporting each other and debriefing after major calls is important.

“There are a lot of horrible things that happen in the world, and somebody has to be there to make it better for everybody else,” said Wyatt.

“We have to be at our best on people’s worst days, all the time.”

Wyatt said there will be a job posting for the deputy fire chief position in the next month or two.

The department does a recruitment drive for volunteers once a year, but anyone interested in joining can drop by the office and talk to Wyatt about what volunteering entails.

The department started the Easter egg event five years ago but Covid had cancelled it for the last two.

Keeping the culture alive Rankin Inlet Appolina Makkigak teacher receives language award

When Appolina Makkigak was in Grade 1, just about every student in her class knew Inuktitut.

“We knew the common words, we knew what our teacher was saying, and she spoke in Inuktitut only,” recalled Makkigak, now a Grade 1 Inuktitut teacher at Leo Ussak School in Rankin Inlet herself.

“But now I feel like I have to go back and forth between English and Inuktitut. It’s a little hard some days, but it’s good they’re getting it back.”

Makkigak was one of three recipients of the 2022 Inuit Language Award presented by the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit Board.

“I felt very honoured to be receiving this award,” said Makkigak, who grew up in an Inuktitut-only household.

“I remember my grandma being my interpreter at one time,” she said. “That’s how much they wanted us to know Inuktitut.

There was absolutely no English allowed.”

Living her life in Rankin Inlet, Makkigak went on to graduate from the Nunavut Teachers Education Program in town and began her current position at LUS in 2017.

“I like teaching,” she said. “I feel like I’m getting better every

year. The kids pick up the syllabics very quickly and common words we use every day. By the end of the year, even if they weren’t able to understand much (at first), I could speak sentences in Inuktitut and they could understand it all.”

The language is important to preserve because it defines who Inuit are, she said.

“It’s fascinating being able to go between two different languages,” said Makkigak. “It connects at a deeper level to our culture and ways. Inuktitut stories said in Inuktitut feel more real than if they were told in English.”

One of the primary differences in the language is verb placement, she added. In Inuktitut, verbs precede the subject, so one would say “Running I am,” whereas it’s the opposite in English and would be “I am running.”

Makkigak looks forward to continuing to promote the language.

“I feel like maybe this is just the beginning of what I am able to try and help with to preserve Inuktitut,” she said.

IUT chairperson Louis Tapardjuk said in a news release that the selection process for the award was exciting and rewarding.

“All the nominees demonstrated a high level of dedication in protecting and promoting our Inuktitut language,” stated Tapardjuk.

The other recipients of the award were Attima Naalungiaq Hadlari of Cambridge Bay and Alexina Kublu of Iqaluit.

Appolina Makkigak is passing on Inuktitut to daughter Priya.

Appolina was one of three recipients of the 2022 Inuit Language Award, presented by the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit Board.
