Health Minister reminds all to 'remain focused', keep working together to keep communities healthy and well

Plane slides off the runway Naujaat A Calm Air cargo plane slid off of the runway upon landing in Naujaat this past Thursday, Nov. 27, at about 1:30 p.m.

There were no injuries in the incident.

"No passengers were on board and the crew are receiving medical evaluations," read a company statement posted to Calm Air International's Facebook page on the afternoon of Nov. 27.

"Calm Air has informed Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board of the incident," the company statement concluded.

Wanted man apprehended Rankin Inlet The man Nunavut RCMP were asking for the public's help in locating in Rankin Inlet has been apprehended.

Donovan Akerlolik, 32, of Rankin Inlet had been wanted on several criminal charges, including mischief under $5,000, arson, several breaches of court orders, and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

RCMP thanked the public for their assistance.

Health emergency extended Kivalliq Nunavut Health Minister Lorne Kusugak has extended the territory's public health emergency until Dec. 10.

All existing measures under the public health emergency order remain in effect.

Kusugak made the announcement on Nov. 26.

Nunavut chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson announced Nov. 30, that the territory had a total of 108 active cases of Covid-19 and a total of 73 recovered cases.

Patterson said four new cases were identified in Arviat, bringing the community's number of active cases to 86, while Whale Cove had no new cases, with a total of 14 active cases in the community.

"Nunavummiut are doing a remarkable job, and I encourage everyone to keep it up and stay vigilant," said Patterson in a Government of Nunavut press release.

"It remains critical that we keep working hard to slow the spread of this virus.

"Remember that fluctuations in the number of new cases are normal and not a reason to feel defeated. Please continue to practice all recommended public health measures."

Nunavut Health Minister Lorne Kusugak said Nov. 27, that the only way this virus will be beaten is if everyone is vigilant with their physical distancing, He said everyone must listen to Patterson's orders on isolation and they must protect their families, neighbours and, most importantly, their Elders.

"We have seen how this virus impacts our communities," said Kusugak.

"We have seen how quickly things can change, and we need to remain focused in our fight to slow and limit the spread.

"I know this is hard, but I remind you all to please not visit or socialize outside your household. This is so important.

"Please be strict with maintaining physical distance, washing your hands, coughing into your elbow, cleaning surfaces regularly and wearing a mask outside your home."

Kusugak said Nunavummiut are strong, resourceful and capable.

He said everyone has to keep working together to help their communities stay healthy and well.

"We also need to recognize our health-care providers, not only those on the ground in the communities but those that are working remotely by phone.

"They are putting in many hours to ensure you are well. So please be kind in your discussions with them and thank them when you can.

"Thanks to all Nunavummiut for their hard work in working together. We can beat this."

I'm always more than a little leery any time I hear the government in power promote that it's revamping a program, replacing a program, or upping the benefits it supplies in a focused effort to help better the situation many of Canada's poorest families find themselves in.

Canada's poorest families are able to do nothing to contribute to party war chests and, depending on which study you trust most, are among the least likely to change their voting patterns based on current issues, if they vote at all.

The rich, the powerful and the behind-the-scenes funders of political lobby groups have come to have far too much power in this country in regards to influencing government policies and programs.

That being said, people across this great nation of ours, regardless of their societal stature or political affiliation, should be outraged by payouts contained in the new Canada Child Benefit program.

For one horrible night this past week, Charles Phalen and his partner thought they were never going to see their five-year-old furry family member Tucker McPoodle again.

But folks in Baker Lake had other ideas.

Tucker McPoodle spent a chilly 22 hours on the land overnight Nov. 8.

Things quickly took a turn for the worse, however, and Tucker soon found himself dangerously outside of his comfort zone.

Phalen said the two dogs owned by his partner's daughter, also out on the run that day, are local dogs and it wouldn't be the end of the world if they had to spend a night out on the land. He said one of them actually prefers it.

"They took off and got over a rise when they saw some caribou and Tucker started to chase along," said Phalen.

"They had just borrowed Tucker to go running and then I get a text telling me to come help find him.

He'd taken off.

"They found one of the dogs he had ran off with around five o'clock, but it was already dark by then and he was nowhere around. That's when we started posting that he was missing. I posted on Tucker's page.

"I'm not a huge fan of Facebook.

I just use it for the community page and to creep (on) my kids and whatnot. But Facebook put it out and, before we knew it, there were

all sorts of people out helping and people saying they had seen him here or there."

Phalen said there was a person out looking for Tucker on a sled at 10:30 at night.

He said there were all sorts of people out looking in Baker – not in any official capacity but as friends and neighbours – and it was really heart warming to see that.

"Tucker was outside for about 22 hours from Tuesday afternoon until about 1 p.m. the following day.

It was a nice afternoon when they went out, around -13 C, but it went down as soon as the night came, with the overnight falling to -25 C, with wind chills at -33 C. "I was out looking and, coincidently, I was not very far away from him. Some guys saw me passing by, texted me, and then came and got me, and he was there.

"I asked them if he was alive and they said yeah, but he's shivering.

And he sure was. He was physically shaking, almost like he was vibrating.

"He kind of hobbled over to me, and then I warmed him up, put him

on the sled and took him back."

Phalen said the guys who found Tucker were out hunting, and thought he was a baby caribou that had been left behind.

He said he doesn't know what frostbite looks like on a dog, but Tucker didn't have any.

"I know it's hard to believe, but I figure he must have snuggled up with a caribou. That's the only way he didn't freeze to death. The night he spent out on the land, we had a really bad night at home. It was awful.

"We went to bed that night thinking he was gone. Tucker is only five years old and that was the saddest part when we thought he was gone.

"I think you can get more ready for it when, you know, they're older and you know it's near their time.

But having received so much help while trying to find Tucker really makes you appreciate humanity better because it was so nice that so many people cared." bf l A ᐊᓯᐅᓯᒪᓚᐅᖅᑐᖅ m4WZz 6

From Maple Ridge with care B.C. siblings collect and send 44 boxes of donated items to Baker Lake

Two teenagers from Maple Ridge, B.C., made a big impact on the community of Baker Lake this past week.

The brother and sister tandem of Mathew Cox and

Eleora Cox shipped a total of 44 boxes of food items and living supplies to the community.

After learning a little bit about Baker Lake and deciding to ask for donations from their community to lend a helping hand to the Kivalliq

community during the Covid pandemic.

Eleora Cox, 17, said she's been part of the Girl Guides of Canada for the past 13 years or so.

She said she had to do a service project for her final year, and the usual projects

weren't available due to the impact of Covid-19.

"We've already been connecting with a family to help them, and we were able to also connect with a food bank to help that, as well." said Eleora Cox. Mathew Cox, 15, was also

looking for a service project to do, having been a member of the Boy Scouts of Canada for the past 11 years.

He agreed with his sister that service projects are tough to find this year.

"You can't really go and sell popcorn door to door," said Mathew jokingly.

"So Eleora and I decided to pile our service project together and this is what we decided to do."

Eleora said the siblings were led to the Abluqta Society in Baker Lake through the Helping our Northern Neighbours organization.

She said following the contact with the organization, they reached out to their community to receive donations they could send North.

"I think when we first started this, we were going for 10 boxes, maybe just a little more, but that was about it.

"It's amazing that we ended up getting 44 boxes to Baker Lake with the help of people in our community.

"There were quite a few more trips to the post office than we first envisioned."

Mathew said many people bringing in donations were saying they thought it was great for them to be able to do this and help people in the North who really needed it.

He said the community of Maple Ridge has a big heart and he's just really thankful for everything the people there were able to do.

"Actually, I'm going to be

needing to do another service project and I'm thinking about doing this again.

"It was really quite something to be a part of, to feel joy and gratitude while having my faith in humanity somewhat restored."

Eleora said the whole process became a bit surreal, seeing how many people reached out in the community to help them with their effort.

She said people in the community seemed happy to jump at the chance to do something positive after dealing with Covid all year.

"We've been dealing with this since March and the news has been continually dampening since then. So, I think, seeing a way to outreach and help other people across Canada during a time of crisis like this; that appealed to a lot of people who genuinely felt there was a need, and they had the means to fill that need.

"I mean, our dining room table was covered three feet deep with boxes of donations we had received. It was a lot more than we had first planned.

"It was inspiring to see our community come together.

That's not something I've ever really seen happen before – to see so many people with the genuine desire to want to pitch in where they could.

"You know, I guess it did help to restore my faith in humanity a little bit."

Food bank using voucher system Ikurraq Food Bank has stopped distributing food due to Covid-19

The Ikurraq Food Bank is keeping up with demand in Rankin Inlet despite the challenges placed on it by the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent lockdown in Nunavut.

Ikurraq's David Fredlund said much the same situation exists in Rankin as in Baker Lake, with the food bank not actually being open during the lockdown, but able to give out gift certificates under the current conditions.

He said Ikurraq secured some additional funding from federal sources such as Food Banks Canada recently to help them do that and is still keeping its head above water.

"We're not distributing food at the moment, nor is the second-hand thrift shop open because of the quarantine, of course," said Fredlund.

"We've also received some funding and donations from the local stores here in the community. They contributed some gift cards and things like

that which we're using, as well.

"But the majority of what we're receiving is coming from southern donations."

Fredlund said the food bank has a regular clientele list of local residents who regularly come to the food bank.

He said Ikurraq is mainly basing what it distributes each week from that list.

"As much as we would like to, we simply can't help everybody.

"So it's the people who have been coming to the food bank regularly during the past six months who we're distributing the cards to right now, and the amounts depend on the size of the family and the month that we're actually giving the cards out in.

"It's usually around $50 we give to an individual or a couple, $75 to a couple with one or two kids, while larger families get $100."

Fredlund said Ikurraq will definitely be looking hard elsewhere for additional possible funding if the Covid situation, especially the current quarantine, lasts beyond Christmas.

He said the food bank is able, however, to meet the demand of those who are especially in need right now, at least until after the Christmas period.

"We're hoping, of course, that things will brighten and we'll be able to get back to distributing regular food items sometime during the next little while. But, currently, we're doing relatively OK for meeting the needs of those who are most in need, and that's what will remain our focus for now."

Fredlund said Ikurraq tries to share the money it distributes among local stores as much as it can.

He said vouchers are directed to Rankin's three main outlets, the Co-op, Northern store and Eskimo Point Lumber Supply.

"Every week that we distribute the gift cards, they're usually put into the post office which delivers them from there.

"Generally speaking, we get them to the post office late Monday afternoon so people can get them on Tuesday or Wednesday.

"There haven't been too many

people particularly worried about how we're doing at the moment.

"Actually, quite a few organizations that are helping provide food services – Agnico Eagle and the hamlet just had a food distribution drive here this past week – at the present time have lent a hand during this whole process to help the food bank to be able to keep on doing what we're doing.

"So, currently, there haven't been a lot of questions on whether we're going to be able to sustain ourselves or anything like that because, I think, the community has been rallying together doing what it can to help."

Fredland said doing vouchers or gift cards is considerably less time consuming than actually preparing food and getting it to those who need it.

However, he said, Ikurraq doesn't actually track what people are consuming while using the voucher system.

"So we're not exactly sure what that looks like at the moment, in regards to what people are actually

buying at the stores with the gift cards.

"We'd prefer not to have to do it this way, but, for the moment, it is what it is due to Covid."

Non-profit looking for commitment, understanding on eligibility criteria Abluqta Society to better communicate important issues to community

Abluqta Society member Erin Strachan was quite impressed with the efforts of Maple Ridge, B.C., siblings Eleora Cox and Matthew Cox in having 44 boxes of food and other necessities items donated and shipped to Baker Lake this past month.

She hopes that effort will demonstrate to folks in Baker Lake how a solid base of reliable local volunteers would help the society become more effective moving forward.

Strachan has been trying to get more residents in the community to realize the benefits come full circle when they make the decision to put in a few hours each month volunteering with the society – and she quickly adds that many hands make light work.

"We posted their efforts on the Abluqta Facebook page and, when I checked it this past Wednesday or Thursday I think it was, that post had been viewed, shared and liked more than 16,000 times," said Strachan.

"So there's been a pretty big response from the people in Baker Lake going on the page and saying things like thank you for caring and helping our community so much.

"I think it's even more appreciated right now with Covid active in the Kivalliq, even though there's no cases in Baker right now, and Covid has really impacted our food bank services too, making us move to a voucher system."

Strachan said the voucher system has been less than perfect, but the society has been getting the job done serving the community.

She said the society has been trying its hardest to make sure the food vouchers get to the people in the community who really need

"We've been experimenting with this voucher model and what we found was you tell people on Facebook that there's food bank vouchers at the thrift store and it seems like everyone in the community comes to get their voucher.

"People have to understand if they go down there and get a $75 food voucher that they don't really need – they have a pay cheque and could use their own money to pay for those groceries – then, what they're doing is taking food out of the mouth of some people who are literally starving.

"I think people sometimes look at Abluqta and think, 'Oh great, you got $500,000 from Agnico Eagle,' but they don't really understand what that means.

"Yes, we got $500,000, but that's over five years funding our enterprise and every time we hold a food bank that's $12,000, so if we hold a food bank every month, our money's gone without even talking about our staff, rent and the other costs of running our business."

Strachan said the society is trying to communicate to the community on how much things cost and be really clear about who is eligible to come when they use the voucher system.

She said making the who is eligible distinction is far from easy, because the society really doesn't want to be too strict about it.

"There can always be contributing circumstances to why someone's working but still may need to use the food bank, and we don't ever want to discourage anyone who really needs it from coming."

Strachan said there's also the fact the enterprise can't run without volunteers and Abluqta struggles so much when not enough people in the community come out to lend a hand.

She said it stings when the society goes on the community page to announce it's holding a traditional food bank and needs volunteers to come out and help and not a single person shows up.

"The majority of our new board are local Inuit, so we're in a good position in terms of our governance but we may have to look at changing out model in a way to ensure we have a more solid volunteer base moving forward.

"We eventually want the community to own this enterprise, so I see having people understand the associated costs and the amount of work that's involved are two priorities to be addressed right now."
