Preserving course teaches new skills and sharpens old First four-day workshops in Rankin focused on soups and vegetables

The first intake in a howto course on food preservation wrapped up with positive results in Rankin Inlet earlier this month.

The course is funded by the Food Security Coalition through the Department of Family Services.

Course instructor Kelly Lindell of the Ilitaqsiniq – Nunavut Literacy Council said the coalition put a call out for course proposals on different ways to help food security and, at the same time, help people foster skills that they may not currently possess.

She said she submitted the course proposal based on the skills she developed while attending the Atlantic Culinary Institute at Prince Edward Island's Holland College.

"Because I went to school and learned about that skill, I thought it would be such a good idea to teach the preserving skill to other people because we have such an abundance during certain times of the year here, and then we go for such a long period of time without dur-

ing the winter months," said Lindell.

"It goes in step with how people make mikku, and preserve food that way, or how they make pipsi — this course is just kind of a moremodern method that I thought people might enjoy learning.

"So, we set up our first two intakes to be a four-day workshop on soups and vegetables, with both a morning class and an evening class, and then towards the last week of October, we'll be doing a morning intake and an evening intake focused on preserving methods for tuktu and char."

Clark said the program attracted many, many applicants, making it impossible for them to take everyone in the first two intakes.

She said that tells her right away that food preserving is a program that should be offered in Rankin Inlet again because the interest is there.

"The first two groups were comprised of all ladies who had applied and everybody seemed to really enjoy the program and learn a lot of new skills that, maybe, they hadn't had before.

"Maybe they were just a little bit intimidated by the

"Some of the participants

may see it as another way they can preserve maktaaq without loading up their freezer, or maybe they'll see it as a way to go out this year and pick a lot more cranberries because now they know how

to make their own cranberry sauce or jam with it.

"It just gives them another outlet in terms of how to preserve what we are able to harvest locally, but in a different way.

Hockey camp underway Rankin Inlet The annual Rankin Rock Hockey Camp underway this week is running from Oct. 19 until Oct. 24.

The camp is holding on-ice and off-ice sessions for kids in the age brackets of U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, U17 and U18.

The on-ice instructors are David Clark, Stephane Nukapiak and Seth Ningeongan, while Pujjuut Kusugak and Tyrese Dias will handle fitness instruction.

The literacy instructors for the camp are Kelly Lindell, Tati Connelly-Clark, Shanti Dias and Alexia Galloway-Alainga.

Parents and players are reminded that all Covid-19 restrictions are in place for the hockey camp and must be followed at all times.

New wellness co-ordinator on the job Rankin Inlet Christina Best has been hired as the new community wellness co-ordinator for the community of Rankin Inlet.

The hamlet announced the hiring on Oct. 14.

Best originally hails from the communities of Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet and spent some years in Ottawa.

During that time, she worked as a trauma and addictions counsellor at the Mamisarvik Healing Centre and supported Inuit attending medical treatment in her employment at Larga Baffin.

In 2018, she was accepted into the Inuit community support worker two-year diploma program, and recently graduated at the top of her class.

Her work placement included delving into occupational health and safety, human resources recruiting and staff wellness at Qikiqtani Inuit Association, as well as working with Ilinniapaa Skills Development Centre in Iqaluit on workplace harassment and violence community training from a wellness lens in collaboration with the Nunavut Law Society.

The announcement said Best is excited to be back home in Rankin Inlet with her husband, six children and extended family. She is also excited to work with the community in the community wellness co-ordinator role and continuing her learning in the field with the Government of Nunavut health department and partners.

Niqitsiavut cooking class Baker Lake Tracy U. Pattunguyak, Jocelyn Meeka Amitnaaq, Gloria Anawak, Marina Kunilusie, Elizabeth Tunguaq and Annie Akilak were selected to take part in an afternoon Niqitsiavut cooking class at the Baker Lake prenatal nutrition program (old dental clinic) this past Monday, Oct. 19.

The group spent the class cooking caribou soup.

Space for the Niqitsiavut cooking class was limited to six people due to restrictions in place regarding Covid-19.

Terence Tootoo Memorial Tournament set to run from Nov. 26 to 29

Tournament organizers have decided to go ahead with the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's hockey championship this coming month rather than missing a year hosting the prestigious event in Rankin Inlet.

The TTM was rescheduled earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

TTM committee member Troy Aksalnik said, as it stands right now, the tournament will be strictly territorial.

He said the decision to move forward with the TTM was made Oct.13.

"If we'd left it wide open I don't think any player who had to isolate for two weeks would make the trip," said Aksalnik.

"The TTM will be a good way to kick off the season here in Rankin. We missed out on it earlier this year and I think it's only fair that we get to host the tournament for 2020.

"None of us wanted to see the TTM miss a year."

Aksalnik said there's no doubt that it's going to feel a

little strange with no crowds watching the games this year.

He said if everything stays the same between now and the TTM, there will be a maximum of 100 people allowed in the new arena at any given time.

"What we have planned now is that we'll have the two teams out on the ice playing and the only ones who'll be allowed to watch them are the two teams playing next.

"We ran the numbers and they showed about 75 people counting the four teams, as well as tournament staff and arena staff.

"It's going to feel weird playing without fans, but, hey, if the NHL can do it, we can do it too, right?"

Aksalnik said he expects 10 of the 12 teams that played in the 2019 TTM to be back in Rankin this coming month.

He said the biggest setback will be going back to one division after the two-division format had been so successful this past year.

"Most of the teams are interested, but it is a little risky moving forward.

"We have four teams con-

firmed for the TTM who still don't have ice in their home arena yet. So we should have some pretty good pond hockey going on," he laughed.

Aksalnik said the TTM is going to lose between $5,000 and $10,000 playing without fans, but that's not the end of the world.

He said the loss will sting a little bit, but it won't wipe them out.

"I think everyone has

been on the same page since Hamish (Tatty) and I made a presentation on the TTM during a hamlet council meeting.

"You know, the TTM also provides a huge economic boost to the community every year, and I don't see this year being any different with all the various activities they'll have going on in town.

"It's good for everybody to have the TTM go ahead as planned."

Big city lights beckoned Baker man leaves family, community behind for job opportunity in Iqaluit

Making the decision to take a job at the Qikiqtani General Hospital was no small decision for Matthew Nagyougalik Uqayuittuq, 59, who has called Baker Lake home for his entire life.

Uqayuittuq had spent time in Iqaluit as a teenager, attending school in the capital in Grade 10 through Grade 12 from 1977 to 1980, when it

was known as Frobisher Bay. Uqayuittuq said it's important to him to be able to work for a living to provide for his family, and that's what led him to Iqaluit this past April 28.

He said his last few days in Baker Lake were difficult, but he had made up his mind on trying the move to Iqaluit.

"My first question when I was first interviewed for the job was if I could bring my dog Cliff, who I've had for six

years now, with me," laughed Uqayuittuq.

"When the answer was no, I spent as much time as I could with Cliff before it was time for me to leave.

"One thing I noticed right away in Iqaluit was that everybody walks their dog on a leash here, and I think Cliff would have struggled with that because as soon I would get outside of the town of Baker every day on our walk together I would let the leash go.

"Here, no matter if I'm walking on the Road to Nowhere or right in the city, every dog, even the smallest, tiny ones, is on a leash, so I think that would have been quite difficult for Cliff."

Uqayuittuq said he still misses Cliff very much every day.

He said the first few weeks of not having Cliff around were very tough on him. While also missing his family members so much, it was touch and go for a little bit in the big city.

Everyone understands the frustration of really wanting to take part in an activity or program in their community and not making the final cut of selections due to what now seems like the neverending restrictions in place due to Covid-19.

Ditto reading that only one parent at a time is allowed to attend a sporting event due to those same restrictions.

And, believe me, I was not a happy camper to have spent no less than six weeks in isolation this past summer while trying to spend Sanikiluaq some time with my daughter before her surgery.

Nor was I over the moon with happiness over having my own health threatened by having to isolate two weeks in Winnipeg on my way home, given that I had never spent a day anywhere on this Earth where Covid was active before isolating in Winnipeg, especially considering I live alone in Rankin Inlet and could have self-isolated in my own home being no threat to others.

Add to that, there seems to be an ever-growing list of the privileged who are allowed to self-isolate upon their return to Nunavut, rather than self-isolate in the south before returning, and it's quite understandable to find one grinding their teeth over this ungodly virus unleashed upon us in 2020.

Arviat's Kelly Owlijoot was thinking about his future with some time on his hands while out wolf hunting, when he suddenly realized that future may rest considerably higher off of the ground than his current method of transportation.

Owlijoot said he started seriously thinking about becoming a helicopter pilot while out on the land this past year.

He said he had a lot of time to think about it while riding all day and, during one trip, he made the decision to start looking into it seriously.

"I began looking for funding and I was approved for a sponsorship from the Kivalliq Inuit Association and FANS (Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students), and that's when it really started this past summer," said Owlijoot.

"I'm taking the instruction through a company called Prairie Helicopters based in Gimli, Man. That's where the Gimli glider landed on that Mayday TV show.

"Justin Seniuk is my instructor's name. He's been with me for more than a week now and it's been going well."

As of this past Sunday, Owlijoot has been up in the helicopter three times with Seniuk. He said he was a little surprised when he was given the controls during his very first time

up with his instructor.

"When he first told me 'now you're going to fly', I told him no I'm not," laughed Owlijoot.

"Then he showed me how to just move the controls a little bit because they're very sensitive. One slight little move and a helicopter moves right away. And if you move one of the controls, you have to move the other two, as well."

Confidence on the rise Owlijoot said it was breathtaking to see the land laid out below him during his first couple of times up.

He said one little area that was really nice to see from the air is kind of a lagoon-type area with houses near the water with the Icelandic name of Saglivik.

"I started right after the Thanksgiving Monday and the course runs until the end of April, but, depending on how much I have to isolate with travelling, it might take a little longer than that.

"My confidence level is increasing with every flight up. My instructor always tells me to keep my hands on the steering stick because there's controls for both sides of the seats, the passenger and the pilot seats, so when he does a manoeuvre that I'm not sure about he lets me follow his movements.

"I've been on the controls myself now too and that's pretty cool."

Owlijoot said once he's finished his training he wants to work with

one of the companies operating in the Kivalliq area, hopefully Prairie Helicopters or Custom Helicopters, which do a lot of work in the North.

He said he also wouldn't mind working with one of the mines.

"The main reason I wanted to take this course was so that I might be involved in one of the wildlife surveys constantly taking place.

"Maybe I could get to take part in some of the caribou surveys and get to fly out among the big herds and look for the collared ones.

"That was my main thought at the time, and that's what got me up there flying."

Owlijoot said he has the full support of his family in becoming a helicopter pilot.

He said that support means a lot to him as he works towards achieving his goal.

"Maybe when I first told my family about it they were a little surprised and shocked, but they totally support me and they're very happy for me.

"It's nice to have that support behind me.

"At first I was a little scared and nervous but I expected that going in.

When you're scared of something in life, it's not that it's really trying to scare you, it's just that first step.

That's the big hurdle and you just have to overcome that.

"I have absolutely no second thoughts about the path I've chosen.

I'm not as nervous now and I'm going to just keep on flying now."

Owjioot works the pedals to control the pitch of his rear rotor blade as part of his training to become a helicopter pilot earlier this month.

Environmental investigation complete

About 30,000 to 40,000 litres of a mixture of propylene glycol and water leaked from a section of pipeline connected to the Kivalliq Health Centre as a result of equipment failure in fall 2019.

Rankin Inlet Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) has informed the residents of Rankin Inlet that an environmental investigation along Kivalliq Street has been completed, and that propylene glycol was below laboratory detection limits in soil, groundwater and surface water where sampling took place.

The announcement stated that the environmental investigation was completed following a leak in the corporation's district heating system in the fall of 2019.

About 30,000 to 40,000 litres of a mixture of propylene glycol and water leaked from a section of pipeline connected to the Kivalliq Health Centre as a result of equipment failure.

Frozen ground conditions prevented the inves-

tigation from taking place until summer 2020.

The report states that based on the results of the environmental investigation, residual propylene glycol impacts do not appear to be present and no remedial action was recommended by the contractor.

Propylene glycol is relatively non-toxic to humans and wildlife, and is used in district heating because of its ability to transfer heat.

QEC has provided the results of the investigation to appropriate authorities for review.

QEC also safely took the health centre's district heating system out of operation when the leak was discovered. The corporation will assess the pipeline and decide whether to decommission or repair the district heat system in this area.

so they're doing well. I went to see them for a week this past June and I just about cried when it was time to leave again.

"It was all so new to me at first until I found myself starting to fit in with my surroundings. The people here have helped me adjust a great deal too, because they were all so welcoming to me.

"Everyone here is so outgoing and it doesn't seem to matter much where you're from. You see Inuit and non-Inuit together here all the time, getting along so well, and that was a real eye-opener for me.

"People here are open to me, pretty straight forward and friendly.

Mostly everyone here gets along so well, and that's been so nice to see."

Uqayuittuq said Covid-19 has prevented him from experiencing everything Iqaluit has to offer. He's looking forward to finally watching a movie in a local movie theatre and watching all the performers at the Iqaluit Music Festival.

He said it's been a learning experience for him, and he's grateful for the friendliness of his neighbours and coworkers, which really helped him be able to start looking at Iqaluit like his home.

"I'm slowly starting to think of this as my home and, if I pass my probationary period this month, I'll be very happy to continue on here.

"I'm adjusting to my apartment. I have a dishwasher, which I ran once and it took like three hours. I haven't had it on again.

"If I had to do this again, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

"I'm very comfortable now in Iqaluit and, although I'm very much a day-by-day person, I'm hoping to call it home for quite a while now."
