Gabriel (Gabe) Gely played a pioneering role in the development and promotion of commercial Inuit art throughout the Arctic for more than 25 years.

Although an artist himself whose portrayals of life in the Arctic were quite popular, his passion for photography is really not all that well known.

Collectors Kathyrn Knowles and Susan Howe took an interest in Gely's art, photographs and life history and, in 2014, donated images of his they had acquired to the Archives and Special Collections Department at the University

of Manitoba (UMA).

According to retired curator emeritus for the Manitoba Museum and independent researcher/volunteer for the UMA Katherine Pettipas, Gely, 96, had his interest in Inuit art begin with a chance viewing of an Inuit artifact display in Paris, France, following his military service in the Second World War. Pettipas said that by 1952, the veteran had the funds necessary to travel to Canada. Shortly after his arrival, Gely was working as a cook with the Department of Transport (DOT) at a weather station in Clyde River (Kanngiqtugaapik) on Baffin Island.

She said from 1954 to 1955, Gely aided starving families by providing

food stored at his workplace while working at the DOT weather station at Ennadai Lake, where he lived among the Ahiarmiut.

"The locals knew him as Taraami (downstairs), the location of DOT supplies," said Pettipas. "Gabe finished his tour as a DOT cook at Sachs Harbour (Ikaahuk) on Banks Island."

Pettipas said in the 1960s, Gely worked as a craft supervisor and area administrator for the Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources.

She said Gely was based at Baker Lake (Qamani'tuaq) in 1963-64; in Ottawa from 1965-66; and Arviat from January to May in 1966 and again in 1970-71.

"He also assisted other communities on term contracts as a technical officer and arts-and-crafts adviser for both the federal and territorial governments.

"In 1971, Gabe contracted with the Alaskan Shismaref Community Enterprise Development Corp. and, by the early 1980s, managed the co-ops at Hall Beach (Sanirajak) and Clyde River (Kanngiqtugaapik) before returning to Arviat in 1984 to re-activate the arts-and-crafts initiative.

She said 1985 "was particularly significant for Gabe and the Ahiarmiut after he raised funds, including a grant from the Canada Council Exploration Program, to document a visit by Arviat families to their

Ennadai Lake homeland.

"He also received a grant from the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife in exchange for a number of his oil paintings."

From 1988 to 2008, with the exception of two years spent at Goose Bay, Labrador, Gely and his family resided in Nova Scotia before relocating to Selkirk, Man. Michael Shouldice of Rankin Inlet, a past president of Nunavut Arctic College, remarked in a 2017 interview that Gely "was always wearing a camera which he called his 'petit jou-jou' or little toy."

Ilitaqsiniq garners positive reviews Rankin Inlet The Ilitaqsiniq (the Nunavut Literacy Council's food preservation program) is being met with rave reviews by those who took the two-week program earlier this month.

Course participants in Rankin Inlet learned how to make pickled beets, mustard pickles, apple pie filling, pickled maktaaq, cranberry sauce and red-pepper jelly.

Each course participant also received a book with 400 different preserving recipes.

Liquor plebiscite to be held Arviat Folks in Arviat will be heading to the polls to cast their vote in the Arviat liquor plebiscite this coming month in the community.

An advance poll will be held in the hamlet council chambers on Nov. 2 from 12 to 7 p.m., with regular voting being held at the community hall on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

To be eligible to cast a ballot, voters must be a Canadian citizen, 19 years of age or older on Nov. 9 and a resident of Arviat for at least one year as of Nov. 9.

The question will read: Are you in favour of replacing the current liquor prohibition system in the Hamlet of Arviat and surrounding area with a restricted-quantities system? (In addition to the general liquor laws of Nunavut, the restricted-quantities system would limit the amount of liquor a person can purchase-in, or import into, the community every seven days to one 24-case of 355 ml of beer, or eight litres of wine – two boxes of four litres or 10 bottles of 750 ml).

Voting Yes means you want the law to change, while voting No means you want the law to remain the same.

The Yes side requires 60 per cent of the vote for the law to change, while 40 per cent or more of the vote for the No side would mean the current prohibition system that prohibits the purchase, sale, transport and possession of liquor in the Hamlet of Arviat and the surrounding area will continue.

In Arviat's 2014 plebiscite, the No side carried the day with 509 votes (68 per cent) to the Yes side's 236 votes (32 per cent).

Coral deacon ordained Paul Pudlat takes on extra duties with church at age 71

Coral Harbour's Paul Pudlat was officially ordained as a deacon at the Anglican church in Rankin Inlet this past July 23.

Pudlat, 71, said being ordained as deacon by Lucy Netser, an Anglican pastor from Arviat, means that Sanikiluaq God is calling him to do what needs to be done spiritually in his community, as well as any other community he happens to be called to in the Kivalliq region or beyond.

He said he's been in the clergy since 1986 and is looking forward to the new challenges awaiting him.

"To make a long story short, I would like to be the voice for God wherever I am, because he needs me to speak for him," said Pudlat.

"So, if you hear me preaching somewhere, it's not really me you hear speaking but, rather, God speaking to the people, and myself, through me.

"I didn't make up the bible.

God made the bible and he wants us to follow where he is going. So, it is up to us to follow his word.

"We only live once and, if we don't do it for God, we're missing the other half of what we're supposed to be doing.

We have to bring it upon ourselves to do this and submit ourselves to God during our lives."

Pudlat said church activities in Coral have slowed down a lot since the start of the pandemic. That's mainly because the community is not gathering in the church together as it usually does – where they also hold their young person's choir – and his preaching is not being done directly.

He finds it a lot harder trying to serve the community with church services limited to 50 people at a time due to Covid-19 restrictions, he said.

However, he is doing radio shows where many more residents can tune-in.

"Hopefully, God has also been able to send his voice through the radio for both the people and myself," he said.

"I like to think the youth in Coral Harbour are doing well spiritually but, like I said, it's become harder for us to spread the word of God in the church

since people aren't going to church as much during the pandemic.

"By that I mean we're still going to church as a community, but only in the morning.

That's where we do our other half of our lives for God." Pudlat said Covid-19 has changed life around the globe quite drastically during 2020.

He said no one in the world expected what was coming their way and that rings especially true in small, remote communities.

"We know Covid is out there and that it touches people. We know it kills people and can take away the loved ones of so many.

"How do we deal with that?

It's hard for us to imagine that one day, eventually, it may make it into our communities, but we have to face the fact that possibility exists.

"It's hard, I know, but that's the reality of it and we must face that reality."

Pudlat said becoming a deacon has changed his responsibilities a lot.

He said he still needs to receive more training as he goes along but, with Covid-19, it's become hard just to meet with ministers to discuss the options that he will have moving forward.

"I'm going to be doing some of the work of the ministers in some communities, such as conducting marriage services, baptisms, and other duties such as keeping records of things around the church for year's end, and holding meetings with parishioners in the vestry and working directly with them.

"I have no intentions of slowing down, even at 71, until God calls me home. If anything, I'm going stronger than ever right now.

"I could not have done this by myself and I would like to thank the people who had a part in ordaining me in the Anglican church in Rankin Inlet during the Covid pandemic, especially Lucy Netser.

Serving up great food at great value Rankin man has canteen dream come true

Almost a year in and things couldn't be going much better for small-business owner Chadd Burrill of Rankin Inlet who is, in fact, living the dream.

Burrill began living one of his dreams the day the hamlet

approved his proposal to operate the state-of-the-art Slapshot Canteen at the new arena in Rankin Inlet in December of 2019.

He has a three-year contract with the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet to run the canteen, with a possible option for a fourth year.

Burrill, 33, who works in

the airports division with the Government of Nunavut in Rankin, has been involved with the food industry since he started washing dishes at the Captain's Galley in the Siniktarvik Hotel when he was just 12 years of age.

Two years later, while working at a family member's restaurant in Rankin, he was standing on a bucket and cooking hamburgers.

The bucket was the only way he could reach the burgers at the back of the grill, laughed Burrill, who said he always had a spark inside for working in the food industry.

He said, over the years, it became a sort of hobby and then grew into much more.

"I've always enjoyed feeding people when they're hungry and giving them good, honest food for their money," said Burrill.

"I never dared to dream in a million years that I'd ever have an opportunity like this but it all happened in a kind of a spur-of-the-moment way and here I am."

These days, the Slapshot Canteen is seen by many as offering some of the best bargain-priced meals in Rankin.

Even Covid-19 had little effect on his operation, which he ran as take-out only during the height of the pandemic.

Burrill said he really didn't think he'd be selected when he submitted his proposal to run the arena canteen to the hamlet.

He said he was happy, surprised and shocked when told his proposal was accepted.

"The support I've received from the community and my suppliers in town has been unbelievable.

"Everybody just steppedup to give me a helping hand when I needed it without a second's hesitation.

"I know people say it all the time, but it truly is a dream come true for me to be given the opportunity to run the Slapshot Canteen.

"I'm blessed and truly grateful. I don't have the words to describe how blessed I feel inside for all the community support I've received

Burrill said he couldn't be happier with the crew he has running the Slapshot Canteen.

He said it's like everything came together to complete the perfect puzzle during this time in his life.

"Things like this just don't happen for me too often in

my life," said Burrill with a chuckle.

"It's been a real rollercoaster ride of emotions, but I couldn't be happier for how it's all come together so perfectly for me to operate the Slapshot Canteen.

"I have a lot to be thankful for these days."

First off, a big congratulations to the Abluqta Society of Baker Lake for its successful annual general meeting recently and the announcement of its elected board members for the upcoming year.

The society has been making great strides in Baker during the past few years and continues to make a huge contribution with its various initiatives within the community, most significantly its food bank and thrift store operations.

The list of board members for the upcoming year is an impressive one, putting the society in good hands again as it continues to grow stronger and more effective seemingly on a month-to-month basis.

Donors back vital Arctic research Canadian Museum of Nature receives $300,000 in two donations toward Arctic field studies

The vital research role being played in the Canadian Arctic by the Centre for Arctic Knowledge and Exploration (CAKE) at the Canadian Museum of Nature received a significant boost recently in the form of two cash gifts.

Brookfield Asset Management donated $250,000 to create the D.K. Beckel Arctic Fieldwork Fund, which will focus on advancing critical Arctic field research at the museum, while the Kenneth Molson Foundation donated $50,000 to support the museum's National Arctic Field Research Fund.

The Canadian Museum of Nature, which is Canada's national museum of natural history and natural sciences, also embarked on a bold new course on Oct. 7 with the launch of the Nature Foundation, to which the gifts were officially made.

The independent charitable entity will accelerate the impact of the museum's world-class scientific collections, research activities, and education efforts through philanthropic investments.

Backed by initial support of close to $4 million in total gifts, the Nature Foundation will empower the museum to continue its critical work sharing knowledge with a network of global collaborators and partners that guide science-based decisions on environmental change (especially in the Arctic), species diversity, and conservation.

Dr. Jeff Saarela, CAKE's founding director and VP, Research and Collections, said the Canadian Museum of Nature has been involved in Canadian Arctic scientific research for more than a century, dating back to the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913 to 1918.

He said during the past 100 years it's been involved in learning about biodiversity throughout the Arctic on land, in marine and ecosystems in fresh water, as well as generating new knowledge about the geological diversity.

"We've had teams of scientists work on fossils that are known from the Canadian Arctic of species that lived many millions of years ago when there were large trees, for example, in the high Arctic," said Saarela.

"That work continues. The Arctic is a huge area and it's very difficult to access remote areas. And the Arctic is changing very quickly.

"We know that the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the planet and there are very urgent threats to biodiversity in the Arctic.

"It's very expensive to get up to those remote field sites, and these gifts will allow the museum to continue to engage in the important scientific work we've been doing for a long time now."

Saarela said teams of zoologists, botanists and paleontologists work in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago primarily, with most of it being done in Nunavut.

He said some of the research they do at the Museum of Nature in the Canadian Arctic is, really, just trying to get some basic understanding of where organisms occur right now – where do they live, where do plants live and where do fish currently live?

"As we know, the climate is warming and there are changes happening all ready. Northerners have been reporting many changes in their local environments for years now, including seeing new species come-in to their communities.

"So, to be able to understand those changes on a large scale, we need information – scientific data on what occurs in time and space right now – so that we have a record by which we can look back and compare as things change in the future.

"These funds will allow us to continue to go into the field, to remote areas that haven't yet been explored by experts who have detailed knowledge about the diversity that lives there, and make

collections that are brought back to the museum to become part of the permanent scientific record.

"Because of the Arctic's huge size and expanse – compared to, say, southern Canada where it's very easy to get around – there are huge gaps in our detailed knowledge of local biodiversity."

Saarela said the type of documentation research they're doing could go on forever, especially as things start to change more rapidly.

He said part of the $300,000 they recently received is going to go into an endowment so that it will be able to generate interest, rather than spending a full $250,000 over a couple of seasons in the Arctic, which isn't hard to do.

"In terms of their impact, these are funds that will exist for a long time so that they'll continue to generate revenue that we can use to support the science.

"With people who study the Arctic, it's almost a race against time right now because the changes are happening so fast. We're not going to be able to get all the baseline data we need before things have already changed."

Saarela said the science done at the museum is known as collections-based research, so every question they ask is based on the study of specimens that were collected in the environment.

He said the project to digitize the museum's collection, called Expedition Arctic Botany, has focused primarily on the plants and lichen from the Canadian Arctic.

"We have the world's best scientific collection of plant species from Canada's Arctic and, once preserved properly, they last for centuries.

"As well, flat specimens are relatively easy to take an image of, and you can do many images relatively quickly.

"The project allows us to share images from our data base on the internet with anyone who's interested in them, whether that be someone who wants to draw Arctic plants, or researchers who are studying

Arviat drama club back on stage Director faces the new normal as rehearsals ramp up for a new production

Thirty-year stage director Gord Billard of Arviat is finding the Covid reality more challenging to deal with than a young group of thespians who have been away from the stage for almost a year.

Billard said actors who have been away from the stage for a while don't really present any unique challenge to the director.

He said his regular routine with a cast would help blow away any dust that may have accumulated on their acting skills while being away from the stage for a year.

Billard said he started off with six to eight actors showing up for rehearsals, but that number quickly rose to 15 in a week to 10 days.

"Once word began to spread on our work on the Lindsay Price (Theatrefolk) piece, Scenes from a Quarantine, more of my regular cast members began to come out.

"We have a pretty strong troupe right now that I think will be able to pull this off quite nicely."

Billard said the current health restrictions in place due to Covid will

affect how the play is delivered.

He said Scenes from a Quarantine was actually written to be done completely on a computer screen if one wanted to, so it could be an online production.

"We're looking at doing a mixture of that with some of the vignettes being done online – recording them and projecting them on the screen after a performance of half a dozen or more live ones on the stage.

"We'll be cutting out computer screens with people's faces in them and they're going to be acting like they're online, but really they'll be live.

"We plan to do the whole production online, but we also hope to do a performance for youths in the theatre before a crowd of controlled numbers due to the pandemic. There's nothing confirmed, but it remains a distinct possibility."

past week, Shouldice said he still speaks regularly with Gely through social media, although Gely is losing much of his strength these days.

Shouldice said he met Gely the very first day he arrived in Arviat in the mid-1970s.

He said, with tongue firmly in cheek, that one would think Gely was a French priest.

"He would say in a thick French accent, 'Hello, I'm father Gabe Gely,' and he was a father because he had two sons," laughs Shouldice.

"Gabe has a wild sense of humour, is a real people person and just loves Inuit. To walk down the street from one end of Arviat to the other with Gabe took forever because everybody knew him and wanted to stop and talk with him. He knew everybody and teased them all.

"To me it's not that his photography was that exciting, but more his whole life being so amazing.

"We were sitting out one summer

evening in the early '80s, I think it was, and he told war stories until about four in the morning. I was just gobsmacked by these stories from a guy who, at the time, didn't expect to live.

"They walked over the Alps from France into Italy countless times. He found himself at a Red Cross station at the end of the war, where he was fed and bathed, but, when they tried to take his clothing, Gabe didn't want to give them up.

When they rolled back the lapel on his jacket it was just full of body lice."

Shouldice said Gely loved developing his own photos in a darkroom and said it's incredible how much he learned about a darkroom from Gely.

"He told me so many times later on how much he missed the smell of a darkroom.

"We had a light table in the darkroom where I was working in Arviat at the Inuit Cultural Institute. After he'd washed the negatives up and was waiting for them to develop,

he'd say, 'Ah, here comes the magic.'

"He was just a fabulous human being and he painted or took pictures of everything he saw. His portraits were just unbelievable. They have some of his portraits hanging in the Co-op here in Rankin, and I don't think they really realize what they have in them.

"He always had his paints, a camera and a short-wave radio.

"He was a guy whose whole life would go in a suitcase. He had no material possessions other than those paints, cameras and a little

radio. If I had to have a second dad for whatever reason, he's the guy I would pick. He's just that wonderful a human being."

Pettipas said Gely's photos are valued for their artistic appeal, with some being sold to publications such as The Beaver magazine, which has since been renamed Canada's History.

She said his large collection of images span the years 1954 to 1987. The photos are primarily of people and scenes from various periods of time in the communities

of Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk), Arviat, Baker Lake, Clyde River (Kangiqtugaapik), Ennadai Lake, Gjoa Haven (Uqsuqtuuq), Grise Ford (Ausuittuq), Hall Beach (Sanirajak), Lake Harbour (Kimmirut), Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik), Rankin Inlet (Kangiqliniq), Naujaat, Sachs Harbour (Ikaahuk) and Spence Bay (Talurjuaq).

"In total, there are 671 slides, approximately 2,125 negatives, 125 proofs and 597 photographs in both black and white and colour," said Pettipas.
