Power outage threatens Northern Store stock Approximately $10,000 worth of goods donated to families, organizations while they were still safe to consume

It was all hands on deck to keep thousands of dollars worth of food from going bad when three-phase power was lost to the Northern store in Rankin Inlet early on the morning of Sept. 1.

Northern spokesperson Ellen Curtis of Winnipeg, MB, said all refrigeration was down in the store with the outage, along with most lighting and all other electrical systems.

She said as luck would have it, there were no linesmen in town on the day of the power outage.

"The earliest they could arrive was on the

1 p.m. flight and that was iffy due to weather," said Curtis.

Turns out they didn't get in until the next day.

"There were multiple concerns among our staff that morning and one of the primary ones was how to handle the idea of the perishable food items and that was when they reached out to the women's shelter to lend a hand."

Curtis said staff members closed the store and focused on saving what refrigerated and frozen products they could.

She said the Northern also wanted to donate the rest of the food items while they were still safe to consume.

"Joyce Kent from the Kataujaq Society

Safe Shelter co-ordinated the food donations – approximately $10,000 worth of perishables – which, I think, went to both families and organizations within the town at Joyce's discretion. We completely trusted her to distribute it equitably within the community.

"Bruno Laverdure of Agnico Eagle's Meliadine gold mine sent a 40' cold container, as well, to help us out and that was just so wonderful of them to do that for us.

"They took one from their site and hauled it on down to us. We got it set up to use like a giant refrigerator as we moved everything from our cold storage into it."

Curtis said their regular freight handler in Rankin, Sarliaq, was very modest about the

role it played in helping.

However, she said, the company (Richard Connelly) stepped right up when the Northern needed it.

"They escorted the container into town and actually used their crane to offload the storage from the flatbed for us.

"Everyone on our team worked very hard on this to get all the product onto pallets, wrap-it up and then load it all in. There were a ton of people helping out.

"It was a lot of work but we were able to save 20,000 pounds of temperature-sensitive product, including medication. It was absolutely heartwarming to see everyone help out ... and people were just wonderful."

There's a lot going on in our territorial capital this week during a special sitting of the legislative assembly which began this past Monday, Sept. 21.

The regular spring sitting of the legislative assembly, originally scheduled to run from May 26 to June 4, had been cancelled due to Covid-19, which is the primary topic of discussion this week in Iqaluit.

And well it should be, but not necessarily for all the same reasons our political leaders have brought to the table.

Two happenings which, at first glance, may seem to have little in common, may, in fact, be a lot more closely connected than the casual observer may realize.

Rankin firefighters plan purchase of aerial truck

Editor's note: This is the first of a three part series that shows how far the Rankin Inlet fire department has come in the past five years as it readies itself to officially open its new training centre in Rankin.

The Rankin Inlet Fire Department had a bit of growth awaiting it when the new fire chief, Mark Wyatt, first arrived in the community on Nov. 22, 2015.

One of the first things Wyatt noticed was the lack of proper equipment needed for the firefighters to be able to do their jobs properly.

He also noticed a lack

of apparel for the firefighters to take pride in during parades, community gatherings and national events such as Remembrance Day. Wyatt immediately approached the Office of the Fire Marshal to see what it supplied and then set out to get the firefighters under his command proper uniforms.

Wyatt said shortly after arriving in Rankin, he approached then senior administrative officer Justin Merritt to see what type of municipal fire department budget he had to work with.

He said one look at the budget number told him one of his first orders of business was going to be to ramp up the department's fundraising efforts.

"Looking at the things the Office of the Fire Marshal supplied in terms of the basics with equipment, trucks, nozzles, hoses and that type of thing, I figured we could do better even though, at the time, I had no idea of the department's capacity for fundraising other than the odd bingo game," said Wyatt.

"The association did have a little bit of money in the department – although some of it had gone missing – but, basically, the only fundraising that was done was with bingos.

"My next-door neighbour at the time gave me a ticket to a beer dance and, when I went, I found it to be exactly that, beer and dancing.

"We knew we could take it from that to special galas and the like so we started planning. Our first live event was Oktoberfest with a local band that did pretty darn good, so we added a second live event which was Solfest and, if not for the pandemic, we would have been into our fourth year with that this year."

Wyatt said the Rankin department reached the point where it was fundraising about $200,000 per year.

He said in total, the Rankin department has raised more than half a million dollars under his watch.

"We've built things like garages and we bought uniforms – Class A for our officers – a side-by-side and wild

land fire-training equipment, as well as putting money into our new training ground.

"We put a lot of what we raise into operations. We bought a set of the jaws of life for our truck, so if we ever do have a major motor vehicle accident we have it readily available to help save lives.

"Anything, equipment wise, that we can't get from the Office of the Fire Marshal we buy ourselves.

"We're going to start raising money to go towards an aerial truck. Our original fire marshal said there's no way we're ever going to get a ladder truck in Rankin, yet we have three-storey buildings here that you wouldn't even be allowed to build down south without the proper fire protection.

"I also want to get our fire hall to the point where we have sleeping rooms upstairs, so people can actually stay here during bad weather and

be able to respond to emergencies much more quickly."

Wyatt said he may very well have been the catalyst for the improvements to the fire department, but, without this particular fire department, he wouldn't have raised a dime.

He said everyone in the department works together to achieve its common goals.

"We've broken the department down into fire operations but our association also has committees – a fundraising committee, a special events committee, a construction committee – and they have us doing things like going out and buying fixtures to renovate the bathroom at the fire hall.

"We have talented people here who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work and they all do exactly that.

"I have an amazing group of people here and I'm simply the person fortunate enough to be the leader."

An effort is being made to launch a new sport in Rankin Inlet that is a first cousin to the game of hockey and it all gets underway with a three-day clinic this coming weekend.

Recreation co-ordinator David Clark is behind the push to see if lacrosse will catch-on in Rankin and he's hosting the clinic this coming weekend that will cater to kids in the initiation to midget age groups.

Clark said there appeared to be at least cursory interest in the sport, so he applied to the Sport and Recreation Division of Community and Government Services for a grant to purchase some sticks and balls to launch the sport.

He said lacrosse is very similar to hockey in a number of ways, so players can use much the same gear for lacrosse as they do for hockey.

"We want any kid with an interest to come out to the clinic this weekend, Sept. 25 to 27, but, I think, it's a big help having so many kids in the community who don't have to worry about gear at all," said Clark.

"So, with gear not being a big concern at this point and with us getting turf for the new arena, it just kind of made sense for us to try out the sport right now.

"We had plans for doing the clinic earlier in the year and, at that time, we had a guy committed to coming up and help run the camp,

Lacrosse uses much of the same equipment and skills as hockey, "and with us getting turf for the new arena, it just kind of made sense for us to try out the sport right now" says rec co-ordinator David Clark. but Covid-19 and the travel restrictions in place because of it ruined that plan.

"So, I took it upon myself to learn about lacrosse on the internet and I spent a lot of time researching drills, practices and techniques while I was in quarantine in Winnipeg."

Clark is going to run the camp using local youth leaders to assist him in much the same way as he does with the annual Rankin Rock hockey clinic that kicks-off

every new hockey season.

He said the based-in-Nunavut movie, The Grizzlies, has made lacrosse quite popular among youth right now and he hopes that popularity will lead to lots of kids signing up for the sport.

"We have a new rink, new turf and a sport that youth see as being pretty cool right now because of that movie, so the timing couldn't be better to give it a try.

"If we have a good turnout at the

camp and there's enough interest in the sport, hopefully, we'll be able to offer some type of lacrosse program the following season. We're all going to be learning.

"My vision for this would be for it to evolve into something similar to the Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association or the Rankin Inlet Soccer Association – maybe not as big but something along those lines."

Clark said lacrosse will take root in Rankin as long as its made fun to play.

He said kids having fun and word of mouth are two great allies to have when launching something new.

"If the sport is fun and accessible and it's being held at a fun, safe place to come, then the kids will get excited and the program will succeed. That being said, I will be giving everyone lots of notice that this sport is not for everyone. It's a real physical and mental grind to play lacrosse.

"You've got to be tough."

Kivalliq Trade Show goes online Society offers virtual program for entrepreneurs after in-person trade show cancelled due to Covid-19

The Kivalliq Trade Show Society has announced the virtual delivery of its Kivalliq Entrepreneur program on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 8 p.m.

The delivery will begin this coming Monday, Sept. 28 and continue until Dec. 23. The program is usually held during the week of the Kivalliq Trade Show in Rankin Inlet, which has been cancelled this year due to the pandemic.

The Kivalliq Trade Show Society's vicepresident, Robert Connelly, said the program initially began as a youth-orientated initiative but, during the past couple of years, it became open to all entrepreneurs, not necessarily youth under a certain age.

He said the in-person trade show had to be cancelled this year, as is, but the Kivalliq Trade Show Society decided to move forward with a virtual event.

"One of the things included in the virtual event is the delivery of the Kivalliq Entrepreneur program using an online meeting platform," said Connelly.

"The Kivalliq Trade Show Society has, obviously, an elected executive committee and there are a variety of subcommittees that organize each aspect of the trade show.

"There is a Kivalliq Entrepreneur program subcommittee and its members talked about options because the great thing about this program is that it's not hundreds of people, but, rather, during an average year it would be roughly 10 to 14 participants.

"The biggest challenge in delivering the program virtually is Internet access but, other

than that, what it boils down to is whether there's sufficient interest."

Connelly said the trade show society actually put out a survey of past-and-potential participants to see if there would be enough interest and there was.

He said that made the decision to give the virtual program a try an easy one to make.

"Essentially, it's the same content. It's just delivered online rather than in person.

"From day one there's been an entrepreneurial program delivered through the Kivalliq Trade Show, which has evolved over the years.

"In the first few years it was a little more ad-hoc and directly tied to the event, but, over the years, it became more formalized into our program and, in recent years, it's become much more structured with a curriculum, an instructor, a variety of presenters and specific topics that are covered.

"The Kivalliq Trade Show celebrated its 10th anniversary this past year, so this would be year 11 for both the trade show and the entrepreneurial program."

Connelly said both the trade show society, itself and the program committee continuously try to improve the entrepreneur program, which has been fortunate enough to receive very broad support over the years.

And, he said, probably no one has done more to support the program than Agnico Eagle Mines, which invested significantly in, or provided a significant contribution to, the Kivalliq Entrepreneur program this past year.

"Also, the Kivalliq Inuit Association has supported the program since day one with program investments to help with things like participant travel, instructor costs and pro-

"We have a lot of established businesses here that have, over the years, approached the Kivalliq Trade Show wanting to have a mechanism or forum to share their knowledge and experience with new-and-upcoming entrepre-

neurs, but we had to figure out a way to create a forum that would allow existing businesses to potentially link and share their experiences with up-and-coming entrepreneurs.

"So, really, the Kivalliq Entrepreneur program was, kind of, born out of that."
