A trio of programs organized and overseen by the (Ilitaqsiniq) Nunavut Literacy Council were a big success in Rankin Inlet this summer.

Ilitaqsiniq's Kelly Clark-Lindell said the programs were made possible by the Government of Nunavut's Department of Family Services, which is a regular funder of many of the Ilitaqsiniq programs offered in Rankin.

She said one of the youth programs to run this summer was a

fishing program that saw youth head to Diane River to fish and also to learn from Elders how to filet the fish and then properly hang them to make pipsi.

"They also learned how to smoke char and do char chowder during the week-long program," said ClarkLindell.

"We were able to run the program twice, with a total of six to eight youths participating each time.

"Our second one-week program for youth focused on berry picking and it saw the youths go out on the land twice during the week to pick berries with their instructors and a guide.

"They also learned how to make jam and no-bake cheesecake with berries."

Clark-Lindell said the last week of the Ilitaqsiniq programs was focused around boating and maktaaq.

She said the six youth taking part in that program spent a day making pickled maktaaq and learning to cook with maktaaq, before going out boating on Sept. 8 with local hunters Leo Kaludjak, Chris Connelly and their helpers.

"Three of the six participants in the program harvested whales. Jada Kaludjak and Ramona Niviatsiak

both harvested their first whale and Adam Taipana caught just his second.

"All of the participants got to bring home maktaaq to give to their families and, on Sept. 10, we handed out maktaaq to the community and saw more than 50 people come to get some."

Clark-Lindell said, hopefully, the weather will stay nice enough for the group of six to have another day of boating ahead of them.

She said it would be great if the other three youth participants were able to harvest their first beluga whale during the second day out.

"The Department of Social Ser-

vices wanted these youth programs to help combat the effects of Covid-19.

"The idea was to engage youths who were dealing with the effects of Covid-19 and having so much shut down on them so suddenly.

"The programs were a way to help them combat the Covid-19 blues by connecting them with the land and the outdoors.

"We (Ilitaqsiniq) also opened our new pop-up library this past week to help ease the effect of the Rankin Inlet District Education Authority's recent decision to close the community library at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik."

First tuktu Baker Lake There was reason for celebration within Baker Lake's Ookowt family this past week when young hunter Brian Jr. Ookowt harvested his very first tuktu (caribou) at Thelon near Baker on Sept. 12.

Also catching their first caribou earlier this month in Baker Lake was Terrence Arngna'naaq.

Lacrosse time Rankin Inlet A lacrosse camp will be held at the new arena in Rankin Inlet from Sept. 25 to Sept. 27.

Space is limited, so, if you're genuinely interested, please register at the Rankin Inlet community recreation hall on Sept. 18 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The age divisions being accepted are initiation, novice, atoms, peewee, bantam and midget.

The entrance fee for the camp is $20.

Draw date changed Rankin Inlet The draw date for the Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) raffle in partnership with Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey will now be held on Oct. 23.

The top prize in the raffle is a brand new truck.

Minor hockey parents are reminded that the first 20 minor hockey players to sell five books of raffle tickets will get their registration fees for the upcoming hockey season paid for by the TTM committee.

Back to the ledge Nunavut Members of the legislative assembly will return on Sept. 21, marking the first sitting since February and the first since Covid-19 emerged in Canada.

The focus of the upcoming meetings will be to consider territorial government expenses related to the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as other business, according to Speaker Paul Quassa.

The two newest members to join the assembly – Baker Lake's Craig Simailak and Kugluktuk's Calvin Pedersen – both via acclamation in byelections, will assume their seats during this sitting.

Friendship centre to deliver 28-day addictions program in Rankin Inlet

The Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre (PKFC) is in the process of helping to implement a 28-day addictions program on the land near Rankin Inlet that will focus on healing on the land and traditional activities.

The PKFC's executive director, Charlene Williams-Kaludjak, said the friendship centre has signed a contribution agreement with the Department of Health's Quality of Life Secretariat.

Williams-Kaludjak said this is the first program development year for the program and the PKFC is currently in the process of purchasing the capital for the project and hiring a contractor to build cabins for the camp site.

"The overall idea of the program is to use a traditional onthe-land approach," said Williams-Kaludjak.

"It will be a 28-day, 'unplugged,' away on the land healing program with counsellors and program staff."

Williams-Kaludjak said, once the program is developed, the plan is for three intakes each year.

She said in addition to counsellors on staff, the PKFC has hired three staff members to work on the development of the program.

"We're working with Nunavut's other two regions and sharing best practices for the camp/program.

"The intakes will concentrate on working on addictions for alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc."

The PKFC was identified by Quality of Life as a good organization to head the Kivalliq project because of the work it already does with counselling and mental health.

Williams-Kaludjak said the friendship centre was hoping to have its first intake before the end of the 2020-2021 fiscal year, but, due to Covid-19 and all of the travel restrictions associated with the pandemic, training for staff members is behind, making sometime next year a much more realistic scenario.

She said costs are still being worked out on the program

for this year, including ordering, transportation, building and shipping costs.

"I'm looking forward to getting the program up and running.

"We know there are a lot of resources and support systems in place for people who want help, but most of the time they have to leave Nunavut to receive the support they are looking for and/ or that they need. I hope this program will fill some of that need closer to home." bf l A ᐳᓛᕐᕕᒃ m4WZz 5

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's upcoming throne speech on Sept. 23 may very well prove itself to be one of the most important of the modern era and it should be every bit as desperate as it is ambitious.

Keeping the music alive

Music program major component of life at Arviat's JAHS

A growing number of students and staff members couldn't imagine their daily routines without the soundtrack provided by the vibrant music program at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) in Arviat.

With a number of precautions in place to ensure student safety from Covid-19, JAHS is continuing on with its program led by music teacher Curtis Metcalf.

It features a school orchestra, a six-person performance-guitar group and a basic introductory course to guitar learning.

There are no less than 55 students enrolled in the basic guitar program alone. However, 25 of those students

are studying without actually playing due to a shortage of instrument inventory at JAHS during the Covid pandemic.

Principal Don Peters said music and drama are major components of promoting attendance at JAHS. He said as a principal he feels quite fortunate to have such talented and dedicated instructors as Metcalf (music) and Gord Billard (drama) heading up the two programs.

"We're happy to report that our student attendance at JAHS is more than 90 per cent this year," said Peters.

"These are surreal times for most people right now. Promoting strong, positive activities for our students in a safe environment is paying dividends in a number of different ways,

especially with the school being closed to parents this year.

"Music is really catching on here.

We've got kids from every class participating and everyone is following the guidelines for social distancing, etc."

The performance group of six guitarists play at a very high level and the string-benders have already performed at the Elder's Centre this past March.

Metcalf said the shortage of instruments is just one more challenge to be overcome during the ongoing pandemic.

He said the school is renting most of its band instruments from a company in Winnipeg, although it does have about 20 guitars of its own, as well as 15 keyboards.

"Our students can tend to be pretty shy and music, like drama, helps them express themselves more effectively," said Metcalf.

"If you're up there playing the trombone, or whatever instrument, you can't hide. You have to perform and that growing confidence level helps our students in other areas, as well, including their personal life.

"One of our students' biggest fears is public speaking and I always notice them cringe when they're first told about public performance, yet, in the end, it can be so helpful in developing their self-confidence, especially when it comes to publicly voicing their opinions.

"And, having smaller groups this year due to Covid may lead to more performances, which, in turn, may

lead to students gaining more confidence as a result of having more opportunities to perform."

Billard said he's been absolutely thrilled to learn the trombone in JAHS's little school orchestra.

He said he loves the camaraderie he feels when he is among the other orchestra members.

"On a personal level, I just find it all really cool – the feeling of accomplishment you get out of learning a piece of work, especially when it's something arranged by your music teacher, such as Whale Cove Rock," said Billard.

"I'm teamed up with a second trombonist, Grade 11 student Alex Angalik and it's really cool to be sitting next to a student and learning together.

"It adds a whole other level of atmosphere at the school and it's especially enjoyable to have music being done by students and teachers together."

Billard is turning his attention back to the JAHS Drama Club this week, as he and his young thespians begin work on their first presentation of the year.

"We've talked about revisiting the Breakfast Club, so I plan to take their temperature on that and see where they stand with it.

"I also want to introduce them to a one-act piece written by Lindsay Price (Theatrefolk) called Scenes From a Quarantine (a vignette play in one act).

"We had a lot of critical success, I guess you might say, with another of Price's efforts a few years back called, The Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note."

Celluloid heroes, a return to the movies Movie lovers enjoy drive-in experience in Rankin Inlet

Film lovers are getting a little taste of the drive-in movie experience, thanks to the efforts of Gabriel (DJ Gabe) Karlik and a small group of helpers in Rankin Inlet this summer.

Karlik said the whole thing began about a year ago when his son began asking if he

could watch a movie outside during his family's visit to Iglulik.

He said once he returned to Rankin Inlet, he began to look at his various needs in order to cobble together a system and try to show an outdoor movie behind his home.

"Both my son and my daughter wanted to invite some friends over to watch a movie with them, so I started

looking at that possibility," said Karlik.

"It rained every weekend from July to October this past year, so I had to try the system out in my garage.

"So, when a big new release would become available, my kids would invite their friends and classmates over to watch it and that became my test run.

went very well. I just added some popcorn for the kids and they all loved it."

With all systems go after the test run, Karlik decided it was time to begin testing his system at an outdoor venue.

A quick call to the hamlet's recreation co-ordinator, David Clark, to gain permission and the next test site became the community's ball diamond.

The wind, however, quickly revealed itself to be a major issue at the ball diamond, so Karlik was off again to scout out a new location.

"I wrote a letter to the local District Education Authority for permission to try the back of Simon Alaittuq School because the wall size there is perfect," said Karlik.

"The loudspeakers I was using were just not enough, so I started looking at other ways to transmit the sound.

"I got my hands on a small FM transmitter to test and that turned out to be the game changer I needed to try the system out for the community.

"The FM transmitter was running sound for a week as I was testing its range and I was able to do my first community showing this past month on August 8."

Karlik's system consisted of a 4K projector, a pair of loudspeakers, an FM transmitter, a media player, a mixer

Karlik said he needed strong magnets to hold up the outdoor screen, which is 300 inches diagonally, or a little more than 12 feet by 22 feet (3.6 metres by 6.7 metres).

He said he received help along the way at various stages from James Sandy, Jeff Tulugak, Tommy Bruce, Troy Aksalnik, James Sandy Jr. and Blaine Chislett.

"The community response to the movies has been great.

"And, it's been a real learning experience along the way for me, as well, finding out how to secure the proper licensing for each movie showing, such as a public performance movie licence and a proper movie studio licence.

"The licensing fee for the nine shows in the Tuktu series was $30.

"I'm hoping to be able to continue showing the movies until sometime in October, but weather, of course, is the main issue as far as that's concerned."
