Whale Cove tears down historic church

Every graduate from Sakku School in Coral Harbour was on top of the community fire truck, parading around town to celebrate their graduation. All graduates were up there and many community members followed behind in their vehicles. For more photos see pages 4 and 5.

Baker Lake men's group chooses logo Baker Lake The Baker Lake men's group has decided on a logo after holding a competition for local artists to submit their designs.

Jimmy Kamimmalik's design of a hunter teaching another hunter to survey the land was chosen from the submissions.

The group seeks ways to help improve the health and wellness of the community emotionally, spiritually and physically through leadership of each father participating in this initiative.

Kamimmalik won a 16-foot Qamutik made by Jamie Kataluk and Joachim Kubluitok.

Health department warns against use of 'ear candles' Kivalliq The department of health has issued a warning about the sale of ear candles on social media in the Kivalliq.

According to the department, ear candling can be dangerous and provides no proven medical benefits. Selling ear candles for medical reasons is illegal in Canada and Health Canada has banned the import of ear candles into the country.

Ear candling is an alternative practice

that is believed to cure several medical problems such as a build up of ear wax, earaches and sinus infections.

Ear candling involves placing a hollow, burning candle into the ear canal. The risks associated with ear candling include: serious burns, punctured ear drums, temporary loss of hearing, candle wax blocking the ear canal and nearby objects catching on fire.

If you are concerned about ear wax or other conditions, visit your local health centre to discuss safe and effective treatment options.

Whale Cove turf reopens Whale Cove Whale Cove finally reopened its recreation centre, including the soccer turf, on August 26 after it was closed due Covid-19 concerns earlier this year.

The community will limit the number of people allowed in the building to 45 to ensure proper social distancing. A schedule based on age groups will soon be posted in order to try and control how many people are allowed in at a time.

If a child has a cough or runny nose they will not be allowed in the arena. Anyone using the turf is asked to wear indoor shoes and to follow the rules and instructions of supervisors.

Coral Harbour sets record number of grads Sakku School Feature

A record number of students graduated from Sakku School in Coral Harbour Aug. 21. A total of 17 students received their Grade 12 diplomas this year.

The community celebrated with a parade and dance before capping off the evening with a bonfire outside of town.

Flora Gibbons was the class Valedictorian.

Honouring history by fighting for racial justice Northern News Services

Last week professional sports leagues across North America decided to go on strike to demand racial justice, after yet another black man – Jason Blake – was shot by police.

The move came after months of protests across America and the world, which have led to the tearing down of monuments that celebrate America's racist history.

This battle is not a new one. Like Inuit's fight for recognition and equal opportunity, it is one that has been ongoing ever since the onset of colonization.

I visited Whale Cove for the first time in the summer of 2018. It was a community that didn't exist until the forced relocation of Inuit in the late 1950s led to its creation.

It was during that trip that I met a hulking legend of a man who regaled me with stories about fighting off polar bears and growing up on the land before Whale Cove even existed.

Lewis Voisey's storytelling opened up my mind to the rich history of Whale Cove and convinced me to come back to interview elders about their experience being relocated and growing up in a newly created community.

That compilation, which was originally printed in The Walrus, was recently republished in the pages of Kivalliq News as part of a five-part series that just wrapped up.

Rankin graduates celebrated the end of their high school carers in a slightly different fashion this year due to Covid-19.

The community still got together to acknowledge them with a parade through the streets of Rankin Inlet. Many family members also continued celebrations at home.

Girls try their hands at trades Skills Canada workshop series in Rankin Inlet encourages young women to break into male-dominated industry

Dozens of girls from all over Nunavut came to Rankin Inlet this week for a special program dedicated to intro work in the trades.

Organized by Skills Canada Nunavut, the three-day workshop featured 30 students from 15 communities between Grades 9 and 12, as well as some recent graduates.

"These sorts of programs have been happening all over the US and Canada for years now and Skills Canada Nunavut has always wanted to run one up here. This time we thought let's just do one in Rankin," said Gail Hodder, program co-ordinator for Skills Nunavut Canada.

Participants got to try their hand at a variety of trades over the course of the week, including carpentry, plumbing, machine operation and more.

For the plumbing workshops they made hoola-hoops out of the same materials you would use in the trade.

For the carpentry portion they made a

wooden cellphone holder and for the machine operation component they got to use Northern Arctic College's simulator.

"Another thing we've asked instructors to do is tell them what a career in that trade looks like," said Hodder. "It's fascinating for the girls to hear what it's like to be a tradesperson."

Iqaluit's Emma Akulukjuk-Hackett, who is a trades apprentice in industrial painting and blasting, was one of the chaperones for the trip.

As part of the girl's daily routine she would speak to the various groups about her experience working on big construction sites in southern Canada, including an offshore an oil rig in Newfoundland.

"It was pretty cool watching the girls and to see their interest in the trades," said Akulukjuk-Hackett, who only has 300 hours to complete until she becomes a journeyman.

"I told them were actually a lot of women working on the project I was doing.

"It was really cool to see how many women were actually in the different trades."

Akulukjuk-Hackett also told the girls that they would likely encounter people who would talk down to them because of their gender.

"They would underestimate me and try to give me the easier jobs, but I always asked for the hard jobs," said Akulukjuk-Hackett. "They would be surprised I could do it, or quality control would come by and say that the work you did is better than the people here that have been around a long time.

"I told them, don't let anyone underestimate you."

She added that she would like to see more women in the territory embracing the opportunity to work in the Arctic.

"I didn't say it during my presentation but it was something we spoke about casually. There are a lot of construction workers that are flown into Nunavut to work on certain projects and if this generation can get into the trades, especially if they are women, it would be really awesome," she said.

"If people from Nunavut could work in Nunavut we would have more Nunavummiut working in the trades."

Whale Cove tears down part of its history The community's first ever church, which was relocated by dog team in the 1960s, had fallen into disrepair

Whale Cove lost a part of its history last week as the community's first ever church was demolished.

It had been at least a decade since the building had been used after it fell into disrepair.

"It was one of the last original buildings in the community," said Susie Kritterdlik, one of the church's lay readers.

The Anglican Church was originally located at Tavani in the 1950s, but when the community of Whale Cove began to take shape, it was disassembled and moved to the community by dog team.

The late Reverend Armand Tagoona, lay leader Moses Aliyak and other community members helped to put it up as a church and resident parish in the early 1960s.

Hamlet councillor Lewis Voisey, who is one of the community's founding members, was baptised in the church at Tavani before it was relocated.

He remembers the church getting

stuck when his father-in-law, John Towtongie, was helping to pull it.

"I was up there when they got it stuck in Tavani," he said "In those days if we could do something we had to finish it. Nothing ever seemed to get stuck. They must have been pretty strong. Today if you get something stuck they just leave it there I suppose."

The Anglican diocese made the decision to tear down the church years ago. However, it wasn't until last week that the hamlet decided to finally demolish it.

"We've tried to take it down for a few years now," said Voisey. "It was just going to be an eyesore if it stayed any longer."

The Anglican bishop for Nunavut previously visited the community to bless the old church because it was closing down, said Kritterdlik.

Because of Covid-19, the bishop was unable to travel to Whale Cove for the demolition.

"It was sitting there for a long time. We were just waiting for it to be demolished," said Kritterdlik. "Nothing else could happen. We couldn't

keep that building. It wasn't healthy for the community."

As a young woman growing up in the community, Kritterdlik became involved with the Anglican Church, in most part because her husband was a member. Kritterdlik said she had many fond memories spent in the church.

"My parents were churchgoers and they went every time there was a service. I remember a lot of weddings and baptisms for babies," she said. "It was a really important place for me."

She was not in town for the demolition but watched a live stream of it online from Rankin Inlet.

"I watched it and it was emotional for me. I was just envisioning who used to be there and everything that happened before. I wasn't sad it was just memories coming back to me."

Voisey said he was out fishing at his cabin when the church was torn down.

"When I came home from fishing I went down to the dock. I never even noticed it was gone. And then I went back and I realized there's something missing here."
