Green fund announced Kivalliq Department of Community and Government Services (CG&S) Minister Lorne Kusugak has announced that his department will launch the Municipal Green Energy Funding Program on April 1.

The objective of the program is to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and decrease carbon emissions. As such, the program supports Nunavut’s commitments within the Pan-Canadian Framework on Climate Change.

Kusugak said the Municipal Green Energy Fund will provide $1 million per year during each of the next three years toward “green” initiatives identified by municipalities, who may submit proposals for up to $500,000 to support Green Energy projects in their communities..

He said the fund will be accessible to all municipal governments on an application basis.

“This could include projects such as energy efficient lighting, solar panels, or planning related to climate change, adaptation and the impacts on the municipality." said Kusugak.

“The fund will be administered by CG&S in co-operation with the Climate Change Secretariat. An application package and proposal guidelines will be distributed to municipalities in the next few weeks.

School update Coral Harbour Education Minister David Joanasie updated his Government of Nunavut colleagues on the coming expansion and renovation of Sakku School in Coral Harbour on March 12.

Joanasie said the school design team, which consists of staff from Accutech Engineering Inc., the Department of Education and the Department of Community and Government Services, conducted the latest round of consultations with the goal of visualizing the future needs of the school and community from Jan. 20 to 24.

He said the team met the local district education authority, hamlet council, students, school staff, Elders, parents and Nunavut Arctic College to seek input on what types of classrooms the community would like for their students, such as a sewing room, a carpentry workshop or music room.

“The renovation and expansion of Sakku School means the community will be able to offer more services and activities for students and the Coral Harbour community,” said Joanasie.

“New classrooms will support future growth and more cultural programming and sport event hosting.”

Career, contribution recognized Rankin Inlet/Iqaluit Minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College Patterk Netser acknowledged the contributions of trades instructor Alexander (Sandy) Napier to the legislative assembly on March 10.

Napier retired from a 40-year trades career on Sept. 3, the final decade of which he spent with Nunavut Arctic College in Rankin Inlet, first as an instructor for the School of Construction Trades (Sanatuliqsarvik) and eventually as chair of construction trades for the college.

Netser said Napier worked tirelessly to promote the trades as a viable and desirable career for Nunavummiut, and was a staunch supporter of women working in the trades sector.

He said Napier made too many positive contributions to the college to be able to cover in one statement.

“Retirement has not slowed Sandy down,” said Netser.

“He continues to volunteer hundreds of hours on weekends and late nights to work with young apprentices before their government certification exams.

“Sandy’s contribution will continue to the next decade.

I’m proud to announce that on Feb. 20, at the celebration of Sandy’s career, Sandy presented the college with a cheque for $6,000 designated to scholarships to be awarded annually to trades students who demonstrate perseverance and academic excellence.

“Nunavut Arctic College is very grateful for this endowment.”

TTM a no-go this month Biggest hockey event of the year now to be hosted in November

The biggest hockey event of the year had to be rescheduled last week in Rankin Inlet due to concern over the coronavirus disease and COVID-19.

The Terence Tootoo Memorial (TTM) senior men's tournament has been tremendously successful since taking over from its predecessor, the Avataq Cup. And, this year, excitement was at a fever pitch for the first TTM tourney to be played in Rankin's brand-new arena, as well as rumours and reports of at least four former NHLers on their way to compete at the 2020 TTM. But that all came crashing down – at least for the time being – with the fear of COVID-19 across North America.

and he said he was, kind of, sad inside to have to cancel the tournament.

He said the TTM is a tournament that everyone wants to play in and it was a tough decision to cancel a tournament that popular across the region.

"I think we made the right decision, especially when you look at all the cancellations going on across the country," said Aksalnik.

"And, really, we're not cancelling the TTM as much as we’re re-scheduling it.

"At first, we thought about rescheduling it for the end of April, but this situation is probably only going to get worse before it gets better.

"We thought it would be better to put more space between the TTM and what's happening now and it would be a great way to kick-off a new season of hockey in Rankin if we held it in November, so that's the direction we took."

Aksalnik said the TTM has a lot of

sponsors that donated to the tournament and the committee felt it was only fair that they go ahead and hold it before the end of the year.

He said most rinks in the region are open by the middle of November and that will give most players two weeks to get the rust off and get ready to play in the TTM. "You might not be at the top of your game, but it's something to look forward to and a great way to start your season.

"Players in the region will know all summer that the TTM is coming in November, so it's up to them to try and stay in shape and be ready for the tournament.

"So, we'll hold the 2020 TTM in November and, just four months later, we'll hold the 2021 TTM. "I think it will be a lot of fun for many players to compete in two tournaments like that so close together."

JAHS Drama Club prepares to perform The Breakfast Club in Arviat next month

As many folks across the land follow the coronavirus saga and worry about where it might turn up next, a group of young thespians are quietly going about the business of the theatre at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) in Arviat.

The students belong to the JAHS Drama Club and have begun rehearsals on a play they asked director Gord Billard to resurrect: The Breakfast Club.

The play runs a fast and dramatic 45 minutes and is not meant to be a full representation of the big screen movie.

Director Billard said the cast has only had five rehearsals and their character readings are already strong and they're projecting quite well.

He said he almost feels like he's fine tuning the memorization stage already.

"They're really diving-into the characters," said Billard.

"With this play, they get what they're reading and they know exactly the personalities of the characters they're going

to portray.

"Even though, really, we're in the early stages of preparation, I almost feel like a good chunk of the work has already been done because they identify so well with the characters in the play."

Billard said when a play is one the students can really identify with and it's one they really want to do, that makes his job as director a whole lot easier.

He said the play is about kids in school and his actors are kids in school.

"The kids can identify with the characters in the play, so they know exactly what they're talking about and how to deliver it.

"Because of all that, the actors can play with their roles a lot more then they can in any other type of show.

"The roles in the play are, really, true to who they are, so they don't have to step outside of themselves very far to really get into these roles.

"This will mark the second time we've performed this play and our current cast, I think, is going to impress a lot of people with their performances on stage."

Missing the Games AWG cancellation devastates athletes

The suspensions, reschedulings and cancellations due to the spread of the coronavirus disease which causes COVID-19, haven’t passed by the North.

News of the cancellation of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Whitehorse left many a young athlete brokenhearted across the region.

It also left their coaches, who had put in so much time and energy in preparation for the Games, deeply disappointed over missing the Games and deeply concerned over how the cancellation may affect their young athletes.

Team Nunavut bantam coach David Clark said telling his 14-year-old son he wasn't going to be playing at the AWG was one of the hardest things he ever had to do.

He said he also felt bad for the kids who only had one chance to play in the AWG and that was this year in Whitehorse.

"If you had told me when the AWG were cancelled that in a week's time the NHL, NBA, MLB and Hockey Canada would all be shutdown, I would have laughed in your face," said Clark.

"But, this is the world we live in and precautions had to be taken against this bug.

"You never think about something like this until it happens and you hate to see so many deserving kids negatively affected by it.

"But when entire countries are shutting down because of this, then, obviously, the proper precautions have to be put in place to keep it from getting out of control in our country."

Kailee Karlik, 17, of Rankin Inlet was looking forward to representing Nunavut for a second and final time on the junior girls volleyball court when she got news the games had been cancelled.

She said the news of the cancellation left her devastated.

"It hit our whole team hard," said Karlik.

"We were all messaging each other on Facebook's Messenger and everyone was upset

"We had practiced with each other for a long time and we were ready for the Games.

"We really had a good chance to take a medal this year."

Karlik said she fully understands the Games were cancelled for safety reasons with so many people about to gather in one area either to play or watch one sport.

She said that didn't make the news any less devastating, especially coming only a week

before the games were set to begin.

"We were going to start a sort of Rankin Winter Games and we were all looking forward to that, but it had to be cancelled too.

"The Nunavut territory has such a small population, but we were all so ready for the games.

"It was such a small group, but everyone helped each other.

"It's really good to see people supporting each other, so I still see us as winners."
