Staff attacked at Naujaat school No charges laid in either of two assaults inside high school

The Kivalliq was rocked as news of two separate attacks on staff members at Tuugaalik High School spread across the region this past week.

Reports out of Naujaat indicate the incidents took place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and Friday, Feb. 28.

The Feb. 26 incident had a student attacking the acting principal, before a group of fellow students were able to pull him away.

Meanwhile, the Feb. 28 incident was reported to have been sparked by a classroom discussion on religion that spiraled out of control when the teacher said he did not believe in God; so he feared no hell, pain, nor retribution when his life ended.

Kivalliq News has learned a male student apparently took exception to the teach-

er's opinion that there is no God and allegedly told the teacher he would give him an example of what awaited him in hell and proceeded to drag him around the classroom by the hair.

The RCMP will not be laying charges against the two students involved in the incidents.

It's not known what discipline the students will face from the education authority.

No teacher at Tuugaalik approached by Kivalliq News would comment on the incidents due to fear of losing their jobs.

Nunavut teachers are forbidden to speak to reporters without direct permission from the Government of Nunavut's Department of Education.

The ban on speaking to the media is almost laughable, said the teacher, during an age when almost every student in a class can take

photos or video footage with their cell phone or other electronic devices.

"I would bet a lot of money that most teachers at Tusarvik are probably feeling more than a little isolated and more than a little unsupported right now," said the teacher.

"I don't have all the facts, but from what I've heard from a few people in the educational field and from what I've learned through the media – the GN seems more intent on portraying this as a result of school shortcomings, as a whole, or those

of the two staff members involved.

"It's a sad day for education in the region and, I would think, a bit on the scary side for some teachers in the community, or even across the region for that matter."

Mayor passes Arviat Mayor Bob Leonard passed away on March 4.

One of the Kivalliq's longest serving mayors, Leonard was highly regarded as a municipal leader and an honest, caring person across the region.

Leonard's fifth-consecutive election win took place on Oct. 28.

He will be fondly remembered as a mayor who loved the community he served and a community leader who treated everyone equally and with respect.

Growing the game

Games cancelled Kivalliq Hundreds of young athletes, coaches and families were disappointed with the news that the 2020 Arctic Winter Games, scheduled to run from March 15 to 21 in Whitehorse had been cancelled due to public health concerns over the coronavirus disease COVID-19.

The decision was made by the host society on March 7 based on the recommendation of the Yukon's acting chief medical officer of health.

While there were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Yukon at the time of the decision, the host society stated that cancelling the Games was the most responsible cautionary precaution.

The host society's decision was supported by the Arctic Winter Games International Committee.

Peewee time Rankin Inlet A total of eight teams in two divisions competed for the Powerful Peewees championship in Rankin Inlet last weekend.

The lineup of teams included Arviat, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour, Iqaluit, Naujaat, the Rankin Rock, Rankin Atoms and a combined Rankin Inlet/Whale Cove squad.

Final results were not known as of press time.

By-election announced Baker Lake will hold a by-election to choose their new MLA on April 27 according to a statement issued by the Government of Nunavut.

"It’s important that the by-election is held quickly, to ensure the constituents of Baker Lake are represented in the spring sitting of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly," stated Premier Joe Savikataaq in a March 5 news release.

The writ for the election will be issued on March 23, 2020.

Basketball takes another step forward in Arviat

Five local teams took to the court to compete in the inaugural Junior NBA basketball tournament at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) in Arviat from Feb. 28 to March 1.

The Nanuqs of the North defeated Team Mamba to claim the event's first championship banner.

There were 15 games played, as well as a three-point contest that headlined the events on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Basketball coach and local teacher Ryan Barbeau organized the event and said the tournament was well received by the community.

He said there was plenty of excitement in the JAHS gym during both the semi-final and championship matches.

"The gym was filled with parents, girlfriends, friends and community members throughout the weekend," said Barbeau.

"It was an incredible atmosphere and I know that each and every participant appreciated the support they received.

"We want to involve teams from other parts of Arviat during our next tournament.

"And, both Baker Lake and Rankin Inlet have expressed interest in sending teams to it as well, so, hopefully we can continue to expand and grow these types of events here in Arviat."

Cody Pitseloak was the winner of the three-point competition, while tournament MVP honours went to the top team's captain, Ben Manik.

Named to the tournament's all-star squad were Donald Baker Spence, Donald Suluk, Ben Manik, Cody Pitseolak and Adam Ahmak.

Barbeau said the tournament grew fairly competitive as the weekend progressed.

He said three of the event's five teams were actually built to be quite strong.

"The final was only a 10-point game at 62-52, while the semi-final between Team

Mamba and our high school team went down to the wire with Team Mamba taking the game by four points.

"Overall, the tournament was definitely about the environment, the fun of playing and competing and getting the community out to watch, but it definitely was also competitive."

Barbeau said he sees the game of basketball continuing to grow in Arviat.

JAHS principal Don Peters also sees the game of basketball growing more popular in Arviat.

He said he speaks on behalf of JAHS staff and students when he says it was their pleasure to contribute to the further development of basketball in Arviat.

The tournament was a chance for our local athletes to come together to showcase their skills in front of friends and family," said Peters.

"A big thank you going out to Ryan Barbeau and his staff of middle school students for making this event possible"

Professional soccer coach instructs players, coaches in Rankin

Soccer loving youth and coaches had a special opportunity to learn from a top coach and instructor for the sport last weekend in Rankin.

Claude Bolton was in Rankin on behalf of the Nunavut Soccer Association to work with the players and coaches March 6 to 8.

Bolton is a professional coach licensed by the United States Soccer Federation, who is also licensed in Europe and is a chartered professional coach in Canada.

Bolton said he was in Rankin to try and make sure interest remains for the game.

He said his visit was not

so much about Xs and Os as it was about guiding coaches into simple principles and keeping the fire for the game burning within the Rankin unit.

"I delivered a clinic for the kids which was centred around passion, the love of the game and a basic understanding of basic game tactics," said Bolton.

"If I can empower the individual I'm speaking with at any moment ... whether it's one stoppage in a little practice or one little discussion in the sidelines as we ended a session, it's about letting them know that they're capable and that they can do and they can achieve.

"That way they will set

their own personal goals, which sometimes can be minute, sometimes be lofty and everything in-between.

"So none of it has to do with winning and losing. It has to do with empowerment, followed by the ability to demand of them."

Bolton said his method is taught in a competitive environment.

He said while enjoying playing the game is always paramount, soccer is a sport which, by definition, is competitive.

"I have my own children and I didn't play Monopoly and chess with them and teach them how to give away their hotels and their most powerful pieces.

"The object of the game, itself, is to win.

"I was only here for a short time, so I wanted them to have a sense of seeing the fun in the game and understanding that it's very simple. That's where the empowerment comes from.

"I'm very grateful for being given the opportunity to come to Rankin and the open-arms

welcome I had from Lisa Oolooyuk and everyone from Nunavut Soccer in Rankin."

Bolton said soccer is still opening and developing in Canada and the country's national program is in great hands right now.

He said hopefully, that will filter through all the way to the grassroots level.

"That means having clear plans and definitions of how the game should be given to children and to the grassroots levels of the game.

"I think that will go a long way.

"There's still a far, far way for Canada to go, but I think we have the right people holding the compass."

So, the past week brought two news items my way that had a deep impact on me for two very different reasons.

The first I had a feeling was coming was the official cancellation of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Whitehorse, Yukon, this week due to public health concerns with the coronavirus or, more specifically in this case, the coronavirus disease COVID-19, which first surfaced in Wuhan, Hubei, mainland China, in December 2019.

To break it down to its simplest form, the regional reaction to the AWG cancellation was either one reflective of how we live in fear in today's world, or one of better safe than very, very sorry.

In the end the right decision was made, but it is one of intensely deep Sanikiluaq disappointment for hundreds of young athletes and their coaches, many of whom have logged countless hours at their sport in preparation for the event.

It is even more heartbreaking for those to whom the 2020 Games represented their only chance at ever competing at the AWG. To them, their dream was crushed in their here and now by something that seems like it's

Sharpening skating skills Famous Andrews Hockey School visits Rankin

Local minor hockey players had a rare treat when instructors from the famous Andrews Hockey School in Prince Edward Island ran a three-day mini-camp in Rankin Inlet from Feb. 24 to 26.

Rankin recreation director David Clark, who coaches the Rankin Rock bantams this year and holds his own hockey camp at the start of each season, said the camp went quite well and the kids enjoyed every minute of it.

He said, for him, it was nice to take a step back and watch how the Andrews instructors do things.

"I've been to the Andrews Hockey School a bunch of times and my kids go to it every year, but it sure was nice for the players in our community to learn from these guys because they're one of the top schools in the whole country " said Clark.

"I was very interested in a lot of the skating drills they did.

"So much of the game is skating now and Andrews is one of the top skatinginstruction schools you can

find – the way they break it down and teach new skating skills to help a player create more space, as well as using your edges to give yourself more room on the ice are two things they're known for and very, very good at teaching.

"I leaned a bunch of things this week just watching some of their sessions and you have to remember, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and most of the top players from Eastern Canada all went through their school."

Clark said he was just a little relieved to see a solid turnout for the school's visit.

He said it was one of the worst times of the hockey season to visit Rankin and he hopes to bring them up earlier in the coming season.

"It was tough because there's always a bit of a letdown in the community following the big Polar Bear Plate tournament.

"It's a huge weekend for us and everybody kind of takes a few deep breaths and a few days to recoup from it all after a weekend like that is over.

"But the kids were all here and eager to learn, so it was a great time for all of us. I'm

doing a lot of the camps here and helping the coaches and it's good to hear a different voice at times and get a different perspective on things.

"My kids need to learn from different people and the Andrews Hockey School visiting here was a great opportunity for them to do exactly that."

Clark said he's going to try to make the visit from the school an annual event.

He said he threw around some ideas with the instructors while they were here and it looks like they're going to try to come at the beginning of the 2020-2021 season.

"I'm a big believer in the beginning of the year being

when you get the most out of what you're trying to do with the players.

"The kids are very eager at the start of the season.

"The parents are also eager to get going and the excitement level is high throughout the whole community for a new season to get underway. So, we're going to

try and bring them in just after I have my camp and have them here for a whole week.

"The timing for this visit was because they were in Iqaluit for the week before and it just made sense financially to bring them right to Rankin when they finishedup in Iqaluit."
