Blizzard delays KIA election Kivalliq Election day for the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) was put on delay by Mother Nature when blizzard conditions struck Arviat, Naujaat and Rankin Inlet this past Monday, Dec. 9.

The KIA stated the ballots cast in all seven Kivalliq communities will be counted at the same time once the blizzard conditions lift and every community has had the chance to vote.

Further information will be released by the KIA as the weather clears in the affected communities.

Northern Networks signs partnership contract Arviat Northern Networks Ltd. has signed a partnership deal with Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology to bring Sandvik's products to Nunavut's mining companies, stated a Dec. 3 news release.

Northern Networks Ltd. is a general contractor under Arviat's Eskimo Point Lumber Supply.

Eskimo Point Lumber Supply and Northern Networks Ltd. president and chief executive officer Ryan St. John stated increasing technology will produce more employment opportunities in communities. He stated today's youth are also better prepared to benefit from advancing technology than ever before.

"As you (mining) automate, there is more opportunity for people in the community to be a part of that industry and gain employment thanks to new technology," stated St. John. "A lot of younger people are so computer-savvy and they are already working with their hands and equipment every day."

Of the 170 people employed by St. John's companies, 60 per cent of them come from Inuit communities.

Baker Lake Minor Hockey holding annual hockey night Baker Lake The Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association (BLMHA) will hold its annual Hockey Night in Baker Lake event on Saturday, Dec. 14. Players in the BLMHA program, from initiation to junior aged, will be featured in minor hockey games played throughout the evening.

Hockey Night in Baker Lake will also see $20,000 worth of prizes distributed in one evening from the senior men's hockey fundraiser, the Gentlemen's Elimination Draw.

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt and members of the Rankin Inlet Fire Department recently welcomed their six 2019 junior fire chiefs for the day to the fire station for all sorts of fun and tasty goodies.

The six 2019 junior fire chiefs for the day were Leo Ussak Elementary School students: Kalluk Eecherk (Kindergarten); Naomi Osborne (Grade 1); Ariana Makpah (Grade 2); Gianna Hernandez (Grade 3); Lila Hunter (Grade 4); and Princess Rachael Grace (Grade 4).

The Leo Ussak students were awarded their fire chiefs designations when they were selected as the top young artists in the Rankin Fire Department's third annual Fire Prevention Week drawing contest at their school.

Among the perks and prizes for being named junior fire chiefs on Wednesday, Nov. 27 were being chauffeured to and from their school, a pizza party for lunch,

complete with a young chief's cake, a $25 certificate from the Northern Store, having lunch at the fire station and enjoying some tender time with a group of happy puppies and, of course, hanging out and having a whole lot of fun with a small group of local firefighters.

Chief Wyatt said the entries to the drawing contest are judged by the officers in the Rankin department.

He said it can be a little tough selecting the winners, especially when one considers every student at Leo Ussak Elementary School enters the contest.

"Some of the entries stand out for how well they're drawn, some stand out for how imaginative they are and some stand out because you can see from the entry the kids were paying attention to our presentations at the school," said Wyatt.

"Obviously each entry is usually impacted by the age of the student submitting it, but the picture should indicate they picked-up on something we were trying to teach them during

Fire Prevention Week."

Wyatt said sometimes the contest's younger winners can be a little intimidated by all the attention at first, but they all seem to have a pretty good time overall.

He said the junior chiefs always love being driven back and forth to school in the fire truck and spending time at the station for lunch.

"The kids do look up to us a bit in the community and that might mean a bit more these days with the shifting dynamic within the station," said Wyatt.

"We have eight applicants for the department in our recruitment drive this year and seven of them are women.

"We have six females in our department now and, if all these current applicants get in, we'll be a female-dominated department in Nunavut.

"This has been a gender-specific industry for a long time, but the women in our department step-up and do a great job and we're proud of the make-up of our department."

Notes and noteworthy as holiday season set to arrive Northern News Services

I always mark this space, my final editorial of any given year, to flap a flipper toward a few folks across the region who are more than worthy of the recognition.

We have folks who put in a lot of extra time and effort on top of their regular working hours to help improve the quality of life for our youth across the region.

And, we always hold a special place in our printing press for the fine folks in the Kivalliq region who feel it important to highlight the accomplishments Sanikiluaq of people in their community to the Kivalliq News, take photos, do interviews or line them up between those in the story and yours truly.

These folks are more important to me than ever right now, as I've lost a good number of great contacts who were very, very active in their communities during the past few years.

It seems like I've been thanking Arviat teacher and drama club director Gord Billard for his efforts at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) for ages upon ages.

The majority of people appreciate a little public recognition for their efforts, especially when it involves an activity they're passionate about.

It's difficult for me to put into words how noteworthy public recognition becomes when it originates from someone as respected in the community as Clark and as highly regarded at his job.

The students learned to make winter parkas and amautik, while a second intake class which began this week will be focusing on winter clothing.

Elder super fans remembered Annual Hockey Challenge to honour legendary fans in Rankin Inlet

A new hockey game promises to be a big hit with fans and players alike when the Rankin Rock peewee team splits into two club teams to play the first annual Team (Tommy) Misheralak vs. Team (Moses) Aliyak Hockey Challenge in Rankin Inlet on Feb. 8.

The game will be played from 2:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the annual salute to the game known as Hockey Day in Canada.

Anyone who knows anything about local hockey in Rankin Inlet realizes the two deceased super fans the peewee teams are being named after were part of a group of hockey-loving elders who always occupied the same section of the bleachers (take a hard left after entering rink side) at the old Rankin arena when watching local hockey games.

And these guys watched a lot of local hockey.

Didn't matter if it was minor, junior or senior hockey, the elder group rarely missed a game for many a year and became almost celebrities in their own right for their love and dedication to the sport.

Robert Kabvitok is behind organizing the Hockey Challenge and he said the idea developed after he started coaching peewee hockey when he felt it was time to move away from volleyball, which he had coached for years in Rankin with Holly Mercer.

Kabvitok said when coaching, he's always looking for something new for kids to look forward to.

He said he looked at the Team (Bobby) Orr vs. Team (Don) Cherry format for major junior's top prospects and immediately saw a local comparison – a quick call to Troy Aksalnik produced the family names of the two brothers, put them on the same page and started

the puck sliding.

"We thought of those two respected elders, who had been in the old arena all those years watching so much local hockey with their group of friends. and I thought the same format could be used here for the peewee players to pay tribute to the two brothers, Misheralak and Aliyak," said Kabvitok.

"I asked the parents of the peewee group and they liked the idea, so we got it started."

The Rankin Rock peewee players will be split in such a way as to make the two teams as evenly matched as possible.

Kabvitok said it's a great time to launch the game because there's so many Misheralak and Aliyak family members among the current cast of peewee players.

He said he spoke to the families to get their input and things are moving in the direction of making the Hockey Challenge an annual event to give the younger players a big game to work toward and get excited over as they move through atoms to peewees.

"Everyone knows Misheralak, Aliyak, (Simon) Twyee and the rest of the hockey elders who always sat in the same corner of the old arena watching hockey," said Kabvitok.

"They were Rankin's biggest hockey fans and they were always there, even when it was -60 C in that old barn.

"The two families were excited, speechless and a little overwhelmed by it, so that made everyone pretty happy about the idea.

"The families requested the two teams wear the sweaters of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens – so we're going to have to start writing letters to have a sponsor in place for the game, which seems like it's going to be very well received by the community."

The final roster for Team Nunavut's bantam hockey team that will compete in the upcoming 2020 Arctic Winter Games has been officially announced following a tryout camp in Rankin Inlet earlier this month.

The bantam team is led by head coach David Clark, assistant coach Graham (Bubsy) Kusugak and team manager Hanna Siksik, all of Rankin Inlet.

Goaltender Tony Natsiapik and forwards Seth Burke, Michael Donovan and Jacob Nungaq are from the Baffin region, while all other players selected to the bantam team are from the Kivalliq region.

Women, families, hunters benefit from sewing program held at the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre

A sewing program being operated by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre (PKFC) is gaining popularity and posting great early results in Rankin Inlet, says an organizer.

PKFC executive director Charlene Williams-Kaludjak said the friendship centre started by launching the amautikand-snuggly program in August.

She said the program is funded through Indian Residential School Survivors money the PKFC receives through its agreement with Health Canada.

"I met with people from Health Canada to talk about what the agreement entails and what I'm allowed – and not allowed to do – with that funding," said WilliamsKaludjak.

"I started throwing ideas at them and they said this program is culturally related, so if it's something they missed out on when they were attending residential school, it's got something to do with their culture and identity and you know it's something the community has a demand for, then why wouldn't I use that money to fund it?

"One of our employees said she knows women are wanting to be taught how to make amautik, so we ran the program."

The August program was followed by a first intake of students on a two-week course from Nov. 25 to Dec. 6 focused on amautik and parkas.

The sewing program's first intake had eight participants attend in the daytime, with eight more attending in the evenings due to employment or previous commitments which prevented them from participating during normal daytime business hours.

The participants held a light lunch this past Friday, Dec. 6, at the Kivalliq Counselling Services building to close out the program and display their finished projects.

A second student intake focused on winter clothing just began.

The instructors for the PKFC 2019 Winter Sewing program are Aline Kabvitok, Amanda Ford-Rogers, Corrine Pilakapsi and Paula Autut.

The students keep the clothing articles they sew during the two-week course, while instructors also sew winter parkas which the friendship centre plans to give to Income Support employees to distribute among clients who are in need of them.

Williams-Kusugak said all the women who wanted to make amautik seemed to turn to Kabvitok when they needed help and she, in turn, turned out to be a natural teacher. She said the other three instructors help participants make parkas.

"We have some amazing instructors and the ladies finished their projects during the first two-week intake, which was a mixed group as far as individual sewing talents and abilities were concerned.

"We had a 14-year-old who attended during the evenings in the first intake.

We had mothers of two or three children make amautik and we had mothers whose children are expecting kids of their own right now making amautik and parkas, so we had a crazy range of participants.

"I would say a program is being successful when participants ask if there's

any more they can take to sew different things."

"We've piqued their interest, our second intake began this week and, after Christmas, in January of 2020, any participant interested in learning to make hunting clothing for use out on the land, can join another intake at that time."

Williams-Kusugak said the friendship centre will definitely be continuing the program for the near term, at least and it's being expanded into other communities.

She said one cultural-support workers is just completing a parka-making program in Naujaat.

"We also have an employee in Chesterfield Inlet who is going to starting a mittmaking program very soon – this week or next. She just found out what evenings are available this month in Chester to start the program.

"So, overall, we're very pleased with where the program is right now and the success the ladies are enjoying while participating in it.
