Chief for a day Rankin Inlet On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the Rankin Inlet Fire Department welcomed their 2019 Junior Fire Chiefs for the Day to the station for all sorts of goodies and fun.

This year's six Junior Fire Chiefs for the Day are Kindergarten student Kalluk Eecherk, Grade 1 student Naomi Osborne, Grade 2 student Ariana Makpah, Grade 3 student Gianna Hernandez and Grade 4 students Lila Hunter and Princess Rachael Grace.

The students earned their Junior Fire Chiefs for the Day designation by winning the annual Fire Prevention Week drawing contest held at Leo Ussak Elementary School in Rankin. The winners were treated to a day of fire truck rides to and from school, a pizza-party-and-cake lunch at the fire hall (with puppies) and a whole lot of fun with the local firefighters.

Successful first night launches Parent's Night program at VSS

The first Parent's Night at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) was a success in Chesterfield Inlet on Nov. 26, says an organizer.

The idea to start a Parent's Night program came from teacher Horace Palmer, who brought it to fellow educator Ana Leishman to help organize the original night's activities.

Palmer said he took the idea from Nunavut's guiding principle for effective schooling, which calls for the involvement of parents in their children's educaSanikiluaq tions.

He said part of the vision of school staff is to ensure VSS – which is the main employer of people in the community – has the parents of its student body playing an active, vital role in the education of their children.

"We can also use this program to educate parents on the special needs and types of services that are involved within the school, how we do assessments at VSS and things of that nature," said Palmer.

"The first night of Parent's Night was just to call the parents into the school to interact with the kids, so they played games and had a lot of fun enjoying eachother's company.

"From there we will gradually move into the more serious stuff, such as how we're going to realize our vision of the program.

"We really want the parents to be involved with the school in how we shape our little initiative."

Palmer said every student should be reading on their own each day, so VSS will eventually start sending books home with the students so that parents can help them realize that goal.

He said Parent's Night will also help

"We are marketing the school with this initiative, to a certain extent, to show parents some of the things we do at VSS with the kids and that we want to involve them as much as possible with their children's education.

"We have an open-door policy at VSS, so parents can interact with the teachers on a different level to discuss any areas of concern that they may have and to get their feedback on any of the programs we do at VSS. "So, we started Parent's Night on a lighter note to start parent involvement, but the overall objective is for it to help with the success of every kid attending VSS." A total of 23 parents attended the first Parent's Night at VSS, which was a better turnout than expected.

Palmer said everyone enjoyed a wonderful evening during the first meeting and he's confident the number of parents

participating will grow as the program moves forward.

He said VSS has adapted activities for special-needs students who may not be able to participate in regular school activities.

"So, the parents saw the first night, for example, that we have a bowling mat that we roll out for kids who are in a wheelchair and that was one of the activities our first night.

"It was so encouraging to see all these kids and their parents having such a good time together.

"There were a number of positive comments on our first night made on Facebook by parents who participated, including a few asking if this was going to become a regular event at VSS. "There was a real buzz created by our first Parent's Night gathering, so I'm looking forward to discussing ways we can move the program forward and eventually realize the vision we have for it."

Less talk, more action for a festive community Northern News Services

Well, the holiday season is nearly upon us, so it's time to wonder aloud where did the year go?

It's also supposed to herald in a time of peace, family warmth, blissful feelings and love for your fellow humans. In short, it's a time of peace and happiness.

The problem is the real world has precious little time for such sentimental malarkey, especially in this age of the easily offended when every word, every mannerism and every meaning has untold numbers of people (with far too much time on their hands) combing over every inch in hopes of finding something to be offended by.

And here in the Kivalliq, we are approaching the holiday season with Sanikiluaq our kettles of discontent seemingly bubbling over with angst.

Yes, there are bones of contention to be picked with some of the prerequisites to be voter-eligible for the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA), like the requirement for members to have lived in the Kivalliq for the past year to vote, but really, the only one that truly needs to be revisited quickly by the KIA concerns students away for postsecondary studies.

As for Premier Joe Savikataaq's concerns over not being able to vote in the KIA elections – Dude! You hold the highest seat in the territory and are doing a great job as the first Kivalliq premier of our territory. We'll still be here when you get back home full

The Pinnguaqta pilot project got off to a rousing start in Rankin Inlet earlier this month, attracting as many as 35 people to one daily session.

The program brings parents and kids together for a day of fun and learning, with its focus being on children who are not in school or attending day care.

Higher quality live streams for community from new arena

Gabe Karlik is looking forward to the next hockey tournament he streams live in Rankin Inlet – big time!

Karlik was on-hand to work the sound board for the grand opening of the new arena last Saturday, Nov. 23, in Rankin.

He and James Sandy, along with play-by-play announcer David Ningeongan, have been sending local hockey tournaments into the homes of Rankin Inlet for the past few years and their broadcasts have been a big hit in the community, especially among shut-ins and those who don't get around as easily as they once did.

Karlik said he can't wait for the new PA system to be installed in the arena and the Polar Bear Plate juniorjuvenile hockey tournament to roll around.

He said he expects the crowds to hear a big difference inside the arena once the new system is installed.

"I'm expecting the difference between our old arena and the new one to be 10-times fold and the audience will really be able to hear the improvements," said Karlik.

"It's going to be a (major) improvement to the sound and people will

no longer have to worry about crowd noise and hearing the announcer clearly.

"And we're going to see those improvements across the board with the new arena.

"There should be no more kids heard crying because they're cold and want to go home and parents will be able to watch a whole practice or an entire game without freezing to do so."

Karlik said the new arena will make live streaming the games a heck of a lot easier for he and Sandy.

He said they're still looking at a few possible upgrades to the system they'll be using and he's confident those upgrades will become reality now.

"People watching the games at home during the next tournament we broadcast should notice a big improvement in the camera work.

"We'll be using better cameras that will allow us to follow the action better and do things like zoom-in and zoom-out from face-offs.

"The atmosphere at the grand opening was exciting and people were able to put the long wait for this facility behind them, I think.

"There were a lot of people who were beginning to think this day was never going to come because our new arena was pushed back, pushed back

and pushed back some more."

Karlik said he expects the atmosphere during big tournaments will be similar to the old arena, only better.

In fact, he said, he expects the energy levels to be high in the new arena during the bantam tryouts for the Arctic Winter Games this coming weekend.

"Everyone gets pretty pumped-up on their own when it comes to hockey in this community.

"But, that being said, the new arena really does represent the dawning of a new hockey era for Rankin Inlet and the fact turf will be put down after hockey season to make it a real year-round facility makes things even better for the community, especially among our youth."

Sewing club going well at Rankin school Funding became available to start program this semester

An after school sewing club produced its first completed parka of the year at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet this past week.

The first parka was completed by Destiny Anawak and given to Ava Nahalolik.

Class instructor Tracy Ayaruak said she approached MUI principal Catherine Leblanc with the idea for

the sewing class because she was aware of the success students in that program at Skills Nunavut were enjoying.

She said there wasn't any funding available for a full class at MUI this past year, but funding became available to launch the program this semester.

"The program will help our young ladies to start sewing at a young age," said Ayaruak.

"I know how important that is because my mom taught me during my high school years.

"So, I thought it would be nice to help some kids learn now and they will be able to sew for their families one day."

Leblanc laughed and said she, kind of, wanted to be in Ayaruak's program herself when she first heard the details of it.

She said she was excited about the program from day one and could see its potential for growth in future years at MUI. "Although the class started

out fairly small this past year, we stumbled upon some funding through Quality of Life this year that was, basically, a grant for hosting activities for kids that was tied-in through mental health," said Leblanc.

"I wrote to them asking if they could supply the funding for the furs, materials, new sewing machines and thread and we were approved.

"I love how Tracy has the club set-up in a way that has the students feeling good

about themselves for doing something for others, by having each student make a parka for someone else before they can make one for themselves.

"Destiny Anawak was the first to complete a parka for someone else this year, so now she gets to start working on one of her own."

Ayaruak said the sewing club has grown from six girls from junior-and-senior high this past year to 10 girls this year.

She said the students have taken to the program very well and would spend more time at the MUI sewing club if they could.

"The girls ask me if they could stay a few more hours

almost every evening when I ask them to start cleaning up, so I have to remind them that I have my own family to care for and have to go," said Ayaruak with a chuckle.

"I hope we can look at getting a Skills Nunavut program going again in the new year but, for now, I'm just seeing how the club is going with more young ladies taking part this year.

"I do, however, have one student who is in her second year with the sewing club and she's really improved a lot.

"So, maybe I'll encourage a few of the girls who are learning the quickest to take an interest in (Skills Nunavut)."

Hockey fans in Arviat are in for a good show when the next Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) Calm Air Cup senior men's tournament rolls around following news out of Whale Cove last week.

Tourney organizer Gleason Uppahuak, who is currently working in Whale Cove, informed Kivalliq News both Iqaluit and Iglulik are confirmed to make their first appearance at the JLM next month.

He said there is also about a 75 per cent chance that two teams from Northern Quebec – Puvirnituq and Inukjuaq – will also be suiting-up for this year's JLM Calm Air Cup. "We owe a big debt of gratitude to our main sponsor, Calm Air, for making all this possible," said Uppahuak.

"Calm Air are going to

put on a special flight to pick the Iglulik team up in Naujaat and transport them to Arviat for the tournament.

"The two teams from Northern Quebec will be dropped-off in Sanikiluaq and Calm Air deserves another huge thank you for agreeing to pick the two teams up in Sanikiluaq and take them to Winnipeg and then on to Rankin and Arviat.

"The only thing we're waiting on right now is for Puvirnituq and Inukjuaq to make their deposits on the special flights – so I can only say 75 per cent chance of them being here until that deposit is made – which we're all hoping will be any day now."

Uppahuak has been working toward growing the JLM Calm Air Cup for the past 12 years and the 2020 JLM now promises to be the most electrifying tourney of them all.

He said Inukjuaq were competing at an aboriginal tourney this past weekend in Val-d'Or, Quebec and a number of players on the team were said to be excited about attending the Arviat tourney in January.

"There's going to be plenty of good teams in our A Division this year and more good teams than ever before in the B Division," said Uppahuak.

"I can pretty much guarantee the JLM is going to be a 12-team tournament next month.

"Right now, it looks like our A Division will feature defending champion Arviat, Rankin Inlet, Puvirnituq, Inukjuaq, Iqaluit and Naujaat.

"I think Kivalliq hockey fans will agree that is one awesome A Division for any tournament in our region."

Uppahuak said it's been a lot of work over the years to get to the verge of hosting

a JLM Calm Air Cup this exciting.

He said he gets butterflies when he thinks about the promise the 2020 JLM holds in store for Arviat hockey fans.

"This tourney will also be a little different for me because I'll be playing with Whale Cove this time out," he said.

"The community has been very, very welcoming to me ever since I started work here and I want to play with their team this year just to show them that I have nothing but the highest respect for their team and community.

"I have absolutely no worries about Arviat being able to handle the number of players coming in for the tournament next month. Our community is very welcoming and very friendly and we'll accommodate every need the players have next month, I'm sure."
