Going to TASK in Chesterfield Inlet High school students take training in mechanics, wilderness first aid

Senior students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) finally had the opportunity to participate in Trades Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (TASK) Week learning opportunities in Chesterfield Inlet.

Now in its sixth year, The TASK week initiative is a partnership between Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), the Government of Nunavut, the territorial Department of Education and Nunavut Arctic College.

Regular classes were put on hold during the week, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, as students learned about the disciplines of mechanics and a fairly advanced course on wilderness first aid.

VSS teacher Glen Brocklebank said the students picked the discipline they wanted to participate in and they had an even split with 11 students in each course.

He said the VSS students were invited to participate in the 2018 edition of TASK Week at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake, but an outbreak of hepatitis prevented the students from leaving their community and possibly spreading the virus.

"AEM sent Keith Dargo to instruct the mechanics course and he was just a fantastic instructor for the kids," said Brocklebank.

"He started the first day with a kind of PowerPoint presentation with

a bunch of videos and slides explaining the fundamentals of how engines and systems work.

"He brought two engines with him to Chester and the students had to perform some compression tests and figure out what was wrong, or what they thought was wrong, with the engines.

"Then we took both of those engines apart, then reassembled them and we actually got one of them going again."

Brocklebank said TASK Week went even better than they had hoped for.

He said the students told him after they returned to regular classes that they loved both courses during TASK Week.

"One community member brought-in their pickup truck and we performed an oil change, did lubrication, checked the battery, checked the coolant levels, removed the tires and did the brakes, so the mechanics course was pretty comprehensive," said Brocklebank.

"The students also asked if they could work on their own ATVs and, at one point, we had five of them in being checked, including checking all of their fluids, fixing a universal joint on one, a tire on another and doing an oil change on all of them.

"The students bringing their own ATVs in was, probably, the highlight of the entire week.

"And, to be honest, I learned just as much as the students."

Sewing machine house call Nunavut Development Corp. sponsors workshop in Rankin

A large number of people took full advantage of a recent sewing machine workshop, including free repairs, at the Rankin Inlet Visitor's Centre.

Sessions were held on a walk-in basis from Oct. 7 to 10, with repairs being done in front of people while they listened and learned.

The workshop was facilitated by Winnipeg's Gary Israel, who has 40-years experience working on sewing machines.

He was brought to Rankin for the workshop through the efforts of Goretti Kakuktinniq of the Nunavut Development Corp.

Israel said his first visit to Rankin Inlet was in 1996 to set-up equipment and train some operators on how to time their own machines at the then Ivalu sewing factory.

He said he's travelled to Rankin a number of times since then.

"I don't know if anyone around here knows Sherlyn Kadjuk, but she's someone I remember from the very first time I was up here in Rankin," said Israel.

"In fact, I think she's still

working in the business in Arviat.

"In total, I believe I've been to Rankin five times now over the years, but I prefer coming here in the summer and fall to the middle of winter."

Israel said he's not sure just how many sewing machines he saw during his most recent visit to Rankin Inlet, but it was a lot.

He said just about everyone he saw during the workshop cared a great deal for their sewing machine and what it means to their family.

"Sewing is very popular here in Rankin. Not only is sewing a pastime here, but it also seems to be a way of life," he said.

"I work hard trying to keep up with the machines I see while I'm in Rankin, so it seems to me somebody could make a living at this up here.

"This workshop was sponsored by Ivalu and the Nunavut Development Corp. and that was certainly nice of them because it's needed in the community.

"For people to bring their machines down to Winnipeg – or pay probably a couple of hundred dollars to ship it down – I guess it's probably more than worthwhile to sponsor something like this

Israel said one problem he somehow expected to see – and did, during his time in Rankin, was to see a few

sewing machines that were oiled with cooking oil.

He said when he sees a machine like that, it's always very, very sticky.

"We bought a can of WD40 and I kind of unstuck them.

"I also brought along some proper oil which went

fast, but we can always send stuff up.

"I was just lucky it didn't leak in my luggage when I brought it up."

KIA could be hottest election on the horizon Northern News Services

While most of the attention has been focused on the four candidates for Nunavut's sole seat in the upcoming federal election, there is just as much intrigue brewing closer to home in the upcoming municipal elections.

It will be interesting to see if the Kivalliq's longest-serving mayor – Arviat Mayor Bob Leonard – can, once again, hold off all those who would challenge him (this time out it's Airo Pameolik and Alex Ishalook).

Leonard has been the model of consistency for a long period of time in Arviat and should still have strong community support when it's time for ballots to be cast.

Sanikiluaq Ditto Stanley Adjuk in Whale Cove who, with seven consecutive years as mayor in Whale, looks to break the decade mark with another election win. He is being challenged by Percy Kabloona.

Rankin Inlet could be extremely interesting with, in my opinion, two class acts in Levinia Brown and Harry Towtongie vying for the position left vacant with the passing of longtime mayor Robert Janes.

Both Brown and Towtongie have extensive political experience and both candidates are highly regarded in the community. They both have their own strengths and weaknesses

Nomination time Kivalliq The nomination period for the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) election on Dec. 9 will begin on Oct. 21 and run until 3 p.m. on Nov. 4.

An advance poll for the KIA election will be held on Dec. 2.

Beneficiaries will be voting on the positions of KIA president and secretary-treasurer, as well as director for the communities of Arviat, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour and Chesterfield Inlet.

Production begins Baker Lake Commercial production began at Agnico Eagle Mines' (AEM) Amaruq satellite deposit at the Meadowbank Complex near Baker Lake on Sept. 30.

"Congratulations to all of our employees at Amaruq for achieving commercial production in line with the original schedule, despite ongoing challenges related to dewatering and adverse weather conditions in the second and third quarters of 2019," stated AEM chief executive officer Sean Boyd in an Oct. 7 news release.

Zacharias's first feature, Atanarjuat The Fast Runner, won the Camera d'or at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

His recent projects include being the executive-producer for SGaawaay K'uuna (Edge of the Knife); the world's first feature film in the endangered Haida language and the winner of Best Canadian Film at the 2018 Vancouver Film Festival and six Leo Awards, including Best Motion Picture.

Generous donation Baker Lake David Simailak made a presentation of $10,000 on behalf of Qamanittuaq Sana to the Baker Lake Minor Hockey Association (BLMHA) during its annual general meeting earlier this month.

The BLMHA held a player registration drive for the upcoming season this past Saturday, Oct. 12.

A total of 22 senior high students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) participated in Trades Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (TASK) Week learning opportunities in Chesterfield Inlet from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.

The 22 students were divided equally between the mechanic program and wilderness first aid course being offered at VSS as part of TASK Week.

Principals' conference focuses on 'Safe and Caring Schools'

Nunavut school principals and other education staff gathered to network, update their training and learn new skills in Iqaluit this past month.

The Nunavut Principals' Conference ran from Sept.

21 to 27.

Principals from all regions attended the gathering focused on Safe and Caring Schools.

The principals learned a number of strategies for ensuring safe and caring schools in order to foster optimal academic, social-emotional and cultural growth.

John Arnalukjuak High School principal Don Peters of Arviat said for him, as an experienced principal, the annual conference is a

great time for all the principals to get together to really exchange ideas and have conversations about their schools.

He said during the conferences, the principals also have a chance to do their breakout sessions, during which they work strictly with their region's principals.

"This year's theme was Safe and Caring Schools, which is a very important topic that I know is backed by the Nunavut Teachers' Association and a lot of principals have expressed an interest in covering these topics," said Peters.

"This year we were very, very fortunate to have a presentation on the Shaker Method, which is a way of understanding the stressors that young students – and ourselves as individuals – go through and how we can

respond to help our students when they're in crisis.

"Part of the Shaker Method is to try and understand the reasons why youth may self-injure and we looked at practical strategies on how to identify and provide support to those type of children who are involved with self-injury.

"The idea is to give principals some tools to identify stressors that trigger students and ourselves really, into situations that can become uncontrollable for people.

"None of us are really experts or clinical in that field, but it did give us, I think, some tools to help make the schools more safe and caring and, as an administrator, we can go back to the schools and have conversations with our teachers to, maybe, be a little bit more aware of the stresses that are involved in a

student's everyday life."

Peters said another part of the annual conference saw the principals discuss child sexual abuse and its prevention.

He said that was another session that had everyone really wanting the chance to have a conversation on the topic.

"We do workshops on it all the time, but it was great to have a perspective on how it affects the school, itself, from an administrative point of view.

"Those were the main topics we had this year and they were all beneficial."

Peters said Kivalliq principals conduct a mini regional conference the week before the annual territorial conference.

He said he found this year's regional session to be quite good, as well.

Rankin department brings fire drills up a notch during Fire Prevention Week

The quest to have an emergency scenario as realistic as possible led to Fire Prevention Week being a bit more dramatic than normal last week in Rankin Inlet.

Rankin Inlet Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said fire drills were conducted at Simon Alaittuq School (SAS) and Maani Uluyuk Ilinniarvik to simulate a fire breaking out inside the two schools.

He said, overall, it was a busy week for the Rankin department.

"Normally, for a fire drill, we'd enter

the school and randomly pull an alarm or co-ordinate it in such a way that they know they're having a fire drill," said Wyatt.

"In this case we went in early and set the smoke machine up in a vacant classroom and turned it on, so the smoke started billowing out under the door and we just left, and waited until someone saw smoke and pulled a fire alarm.

"This was the first time we used this approach and, with SAS, very few people in the fire department knew it was a drill either.

"So, not only did we do a really good job with the fire drill at the school – it was also a good training exercise for the fire department in terms of responding and dealing with it."

Wyatt said he wasn't worried anyone would be traumatized by fear during the drill.

He said a few people were a little unnerved by the drill, but it still benefitted them in the long run.

"You know what? You have to be prepared for a fire and this is the safest way to make that impact.

"The teachers and the principals at both schools noted that this was by far the best fire drill that they'd ever done.

"There was a sense of urgency that they don't normally experience when they conduct a fire drill."

Wyatt said department members go out and have a special talk with students at the schools during Fire Prevention Week.

He said the annual approach also provides an opportunity for the firefighters to discuss an escape plan with the students, something that rarely occurs outside the school. Having

"That includes developing an effective home-escape plan in your house that ensures you have two ways out of your home if fire strikes," said Wyatt.

"The students are used to doing fire drills at school, but when I ask the question of how many of you do fire drills at home, nobody raises their hand, but, when I ask them how many of you sleep with your bedroom door open, most people raise their hand.

"I mean, there are simple things that kids can learn and then they can go home and teach their parents."

Wyatt said, overall, it was a busy but productive week for the Rankin Inlet Fire Department.

Conservatives believe that the big emitters should be putting the money into green technology. Under the current regime, major emitters get sweetheart deals and the taxes collected go into general revenues.

4) Something I have had brought up time and time again is that we are on an unsustainable path. The rising cost of living, the cost of housing and the cost of doing business is hurting Nunavummiut.

We need to take a hard look at cost drivers and leverage public-private partnerships to find innovative solutions. I am committed to examining ways of reducing costs in all sectors.

5) I have met with lots of people who support me and want an MP that delivers for Nunavut.

I'm working on meeting with and talking to as many people as possible. I'm hearing that people believe Conservatives have a plan to help them get ahead.
