Arviat youth learning to fly Careers in aviation out there, but not easy for Northern youth

Eric Anoee Jr. is one proud dad when it comes to the career choice of his son, Nangmalik, who left Arviat to begin his college studies earlier this month.

Nangmalik, 18, is enrolled in the three-year aviation management program at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont., taking his first steps to becoming a pilot.

Georgian College is a college of applied arts and technology, which has 13,000 full-time students on seven different campuses, the largest of which is in Barrie.

Eric said he noticed his son was becoming more-and-more serious about becoming a pilot when he began to start his high school years.

But, at first, he wasn't totally convinced Nangmalik was really serious about becoming a pilot because, like most youth, he just wanted to enjoy being a kid and leave tough decisions like career choices for later in life.

"I began to realize he was getting more serious about his career choice as his years in senior high were going by," said Eric.

"It took me a long time to research a career as a pilot because we have nothing like aviation schools or real exposure to any part of that industry up here.

"As a parent, I felt I needed to

find out as much as I could about what he truly wanted to do."

Eric said being closer to home than a number of similar schools probably played a significant role in why Nangmalik choose Georgian College.

He said he supports whatever choice his son makes and would never want to be seen as a father forcing a career on his child.

"We all have hopes and expectations for our kids but I just want to be there for my son and offer him any support I'm able to," he said.

"I don't have any real concerns over the dangers that can come as a pilot, but I am finding out it's certainly not an easy career to get into unless you have a lot of money.

"The way the industry trains pilots, it's very expensive to attend a specialized place to gain your licence.

"The college route seems to be the most cost-effective way. One can get funded by the government to go through the college system and that helps a great deal."

Eric said it's, ultimately, up to his son if he wants to become a Northern pilot like Jeremy Maley of Rankin Inlet, or if he prefers to try a more southern location.

He said Maley became a real eyeopener for a lot of kids in Nunavut.

"He's proof it can be done."

When Eric left his son at Georgian College earlier this month, he left him with encouragement and a few words of wisdom.

He told Nangmalik to try his best

and, seeing how much he wants this, give it a fair chance and don't give up when he hits his first hardships.

"I told him it will get easier with time.

"I know homesickness will get to him, but I reminded him this was his choice and years ago people didn't have a choice.

"They were forced to do this or that and move to settlements and such, but kids today have a choice and he has to try his best to complete his studies.

"The reality of it is that any youth up here who wants to pursue a career in aviation will have to go quite far away from home to pursue that goal."

Impaired driving Rankin Inlet A 64-year-old man from Rankin Inlet is facing impaired-driving charges after fleeing from local bylaw officers before being picked-up

by RCMP on Friday, Sept. 13.

The RCMP officers were dispatched at about 3 p.m. concerning a report of a possibly impaired driver.

Students were participating in the annual Terry Fox Walk/Run when Rankin bylaw officers attempted to stop an ATV at a controlled intersection to allow the students to cross the street safely.

The driver of the ATV failed to stop for the bylaw officers. The RCMP immediately located the ATV and arrested the driver for impaired driving.

His blood alcohol level was allegedly found to be more than double the legal limit.

The driver is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Nov. 4 in Rankin.

RCMP remind the public of the dangers of impaired driving and the dire consequences that often result from operating a vehicle while impaired.

Rankin Inlet While there is still no word on the official opening date for the community's new arena, the new hockey season is almost upon us.

The Rankin Rock have released the three October dates for minor hockey player registration in Rankin Inlet.

Players can be registered for minor hockey on Oct. 4, 11 and 18.

All three sessions will be held at the old arena from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The registration fee for the upcoming season is $150 per child.

The Rock will hold its annual free hockey gear giveaway on Oct. 18, also at the grand old lady on the hill from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Showtime Kivalliq The eighth annual Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP) awards ceremony will be held at the Northern Lights Business and Cultural Showcase at Ottawa's Shaw Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020.

Up to $3 million in prize money will be awarded to the 2019 AIP laureates and their projects for the North.

The AIP awarded more than $200,000 to Kivalliq projects in 2018, with the Qajaq program at Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet picking up $140,000 and the Rankin Rock Hockey Camp in Rankin Inlet earning $80,000.

Some closure in Baker Lake Remains of missing boater Solomon (Sala) Tulurialik found

After weeks upon weeks of intense searches on air, land and water, closure came to his family and friends when the body of Solomon (Sala) Tulurialik was finally located on Sept. 13.

The 29-year-old Baker Lake man went missing on July 31 while trying to swim to shore after the boat he was on ran out of gas.

Malakhov stated in a news release the community has been engaged in an exhaustive search since Solomon's disappearance.

Malakhov stated fundraising had taken place for the local search-and-rescue team and to deploy the HEART (Hutterite Emergency Aquatic Response Team) with specialized underwater equipment.

All efforts failed to locate Solomon and formal search efforts were suspended in consultation with all parties.

However, the community continued to fund-

raise and brought in Crossman Consulting, a sonar team from Minnesota.

During its second day of searching on Sept. 13, the team located Solomon's remains in 99 feet of water, about 500 metres from shore.

The coroner was notified and is now leading the case.

The community rallied around the family and fundraising efforts to bring family members to Baker Lake from Rankin Inlet and Chesterfield Inlet saw $1,831.95 raised in the first three hours.

Victor Sammurtok School throws a big grad

The Class of 2019 tied the record for the most grads in one year at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) when six students received their Grade 12 diploma in Chesterfield Inlet on Aug. 16.

The school's gym was packed with about 100 friends and family members to celebrate the occasion and listen to what the grads had to say.

They don't select valedictorians at VSS, preferring, instead, to let each student address the gathering and then pay homage to the special people who were instrumental to their educational journey.

Teacher Glen Brocklebank, now in his 19th year at VSS, said five of the six grads entered kindergarten at the same time and remained together in the same class, year after year, until they received their diploma.

He said there has been at least one grad at VSS for each of the past 18 years and that means a great deal to the overall spirit at the school.

"It shows other students that it can be done," said Brocklebank.

"We work on the philosophy of success breeds success. When we see success, we start to believe we can achieve it too and it's easier to work towards that.

Spotlight on Rankin Legion Branch 169 named Nunavut Business of the Year

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 Rankin Inlet took home the Business of the Year award at the annual Nunavut Trade Show and Conference in Iqaluit this past week.

Branch 169 treasurer Darrin Nichol said the Legion learned it had won the award just a few days before the event was held.

He said the award came as a surprise – albeit a well-deserved one – and the recognition is deeply appreciated.

"A lot of people on the Legion board have worked really hard, so it was gratifying," said Nichol.

"I attribute a good part of the success to a really committed executive board at the Legion, as well as the leadership of chair-

person Pelagie Sharp.

"In regards to the executive committee, it's been an overall 100-percent team effort from top to bottom, with everyone doing their best in different roles and we also have an amazing group of volunteers.

"So, it's been many, many people who've been involved with the success of this."

Branch 169's executive board consists of: Sharp; first vice-president Mark Wyatt; second vice-president Kelly Kaludjak; third vice-president Hamish Tatty; sergeant-at-arms Ron Graham; treasurer Darrin Nichol; secretary Ashley Julien; membership chair Taina Kubluitok; and members at large Keenan Eetuk and Titaaq Komaksuitiksak.

He said everyone has stayed focused on keeping things up-andrunning smoothly and being a positive force in the community.

"I think a lot of people realize the legion puts a lot of money back into the community.

"During our speech Wednesday night (Sept. 18), we talked about what the legions are all about – that a veteran, is a veteran, is a veteran, regardless of whether you fought in a certain conflict or spent most of your time domestically here at home.

"We talked about the RCMP, Canadian Rangers, bylaw officers and the unsung heroes of our communities in the fire departments and how we engage with these groups

"While in Iqaluit, we met with Veterans Affairs Canada and we met about the Rangers on how we can more actively ensure they're aware of the programming available to them, which is quite extensive through Veterans Affairs Canada."

Nichol said he sees no reason why the legion can't keep-up this level of success in the years to come.

He said Branch 169 fills an important role in the community and the current executive would like to see it grow even bigger and keep moving forward.
