Triumph and disappointment for cast bringing Gothic tale to life

Venue changed Rankin Inlet The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 169 Rankin Inlet has announced the 2019 Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the community hall instead of Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin.

The Legion also thanked members of the local 3019 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps for their continued support of the Legion's Poppy Campaign.

The Rankin cadets will be at local stores selling poppies during the weekend of Nov. 1 to 3 and Nov. 8 to 10.

Medal boom Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet table tennis team scored an impressive haul of medals at the territorial championship in Iqaluit from Oct. 19 to 20.

The Rankin team captured eight medals in total, taking home gold in U15 women's doubles, silver in U18 men's singles and bronze in U18 mixed doubles, U15 mixed doubles and U15 men's singles.

Gholam Dareshoripour of Rankin qualified for Team Nunavut in the U15 boy's division at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon, while Rankin's Gregory Wiseman (U15 boys) and Coral Harbour's Collin Pudlat (U18 boys) and Prime Paniyuk (U15 boys) were named as alternates.

The John Arnalukjuak Drama Club is wrapping up the run of its Halloween play with a highly anticipated public performance of the Nemesis of Dracula tonight, Oct. 30, in Arviat.

At the end of the show, the club will have performed the timeless vampire story four times this week; twice for students and twice for the general public.

The run marks the second time the club has performed the Gothic thriller, having first taken it to the stage in Arviat in 2012.

Director Gord Billard said the show was a tremendous success in 2012, breaking local attendance records at the time for a stage performance.

He decided to bring it back this year when the students suggested it was time for another Halloween play, he said.

"This version was actually written by my old high school drama teacher, Alistair Rice and, when we did the play back in the late ‘70s, I played the role of Dracula," said Billard. "I held onto that script for all these years and now we're doing it here for the second time."

This year's production has 23 charac-

ters being handled by 18 cast members.

Billard said with some of the cast members pulling double duty, sharp-eyed local theatre lovers might notice someone being killed in the first scene and then showing-up later as a different character.

He said the cast is exceptionally strong and he's confident that Nemesis of Dracula will send more than a few folks in the crowd home with a case of the willies.

"We have Ted Thompson in the lead as Dracula, who is on the stage with me for the first time. He stepped-up to the plate and wanted to take on the lead role and he's doing a great job with it," he said.

"Some graduates have come back to do Nemesis of Dracula with us, including Andy Evaluardjuk, who was in our first production 12 years ago and he's taken on one of the main roles with Rudolph, one of the vampire hunters.

"Another main role, vampire hunter Nicolas, is a great story because it's being shared by Kevin Mikiyungiak and Justin Suluk, who both fell from a roof this past year in Arviat and almost died.

"They both spent several months in Winnipeg being treated but they're back now, doing great and sharing a great role in the play."

Billard said the troupe started rehearsing right after Labour Day and the rehearsals went great, especially considering the number of people he had to rely on to show-up every week.

He said he can't say enough about the dedication and commitment of the cast members throughout the process; sticking with it even when disappointment struck.

"Chasity St. John was playing one of the main roles as Mary Ann, one of Dracula's favourite brides and she had a very dramatic scene in which the vampire hunters kill her with a wooden stake through the heart," he said.

"We found out halfway through rehearsals that Chasity had to leave for wrestling tryouts during our play dates and, although we did our best to accommodate her travel, there just wasn't enough time for us to pull it off.

"Chasity was the first to suggest she step aside and let someone else play the role, so, thanks to her, we were able to perform the shows on the dates we had originally planned.

"I felt really bad about not having her involved because she was doing a great job with that role, but, when it came down to the crunch, we realized it was best for us to get someone else to do it."

Rankin blessed with tireless volunteer base Northern News Services

The beat goes on in Rankin Inlet with a bevy of fundraisers for numerous sports and activities – and the amount of money raised, the generosity of the community, the sheer number of fundraising efforts on the go and the dedication of the people behind them continues to be mind blowing.

The month of October seems to have been one penny sale after another for various good causes in Rankin. This past weekend delivered a treat for taste buds across the community when a fundraiser for Rankin Rock peewee hockey saw the McDonald's Big Mac and cheeseburgers prepared and sold locally on Oct. 25 and 26.

And while their efforts totally depend on the generosity of the Rankin community, one rarely sees anyone within the small army of dedicated volunteers driving these fundraisers take any credit for their efforts.

That's yet another wonderful aspect of the fundraising scene in Rankin Inlet, although the volunteers who make it all happen deserve some form of public recognition – and tons of it – for their dedication, drive and determination in reaching countless goals throughout the year.

Learning to teach first aid Two new instructors certified, two more to follow

The community now has two more certified first-aid instructors following an instruction program held in Rankin Inlet earlier this month.

Fire Chief Mark Wyatt said the fire department is asked a lot to conduct first-aid courses because there's a big demand from people who want to learn first aid, and from corporations that need people trained in first aid at their worksite.

He said the town's only first-aid instructor is Alan Everard, who is now semi-retired.

"I've wanted to be able to teach first aid at the fire department for a couple of years now," said Wyatt.

"So, we took four of our best people and decided to turn them into instructors, which is why we had Andrew Debenham up here earlier this month."

Wyatt said the program went very well.

He said during the Oct. 14 to 18 program, the participants spent three days on instruction training and then taught a first-aid class for

two days, getting everyone certified in their standard first aid.

"It will be a little bit more work to get everyone certified as an instructor, but we're able to signoff on two people now, myself and Megan Netser, and we have two others who can get signed off if they teach another course.

"So, we'll be offering another course during the next couple of weeks and then we'll have four certified instructors."

Wyatt said the instructor's course may have been a little more challenging than everyone thought, in terms of actually having to get up in front of people and teach them for two days.

He said doing a 30-minute presentation is one thing, but being in control of 15 different modules that require explaining, demonstrating and practical application is a lot of work.

"The standard first-aid courses we teach are two full days, so, if you're going to lead that group and instruct them all the way through, you really want to know the material well and be really confident in your abilities

"But, from my perspective, standard first-aid courses teach people what to do in the event someone breaks their arm, breaks their neck or, God forbid, has their heart

Sixth-level black belt works with Arviat taekwon-do students

by Darrell Greer Students in a new taekwon-do Northern NewsaServices club began learning from sixthdegree black belt in Arviat last Arviat week.

Taekwon-do is a martial art that originated in Korea.

Jim Ripley of Amherst, N.S., was brought to Arviat by Don Peters, who started the taekwon-do club with his spouse, Joanne, this past February.

Peters said the Arviat club has been funded through the Government of Nunavut's Sport and Recreation Division to hold a number of workshops to help develop the local organization.

He said he was very fortunate Ripley's schedule allowed him to visit Arviat conduct the workshops, "We conducted workshops on taekwon-do introduction in the elementary, middle and high schools this past week," said Peters.

"In addition to that, Mr. Ripley has brought his expertise in to work with our students who are all at, or about, the while belt or yellow belt level.

"We have 27 students in these gradings, so we're quite excited about that."

Ripley said there are 10 different

levels of colour belts in taekwon-do starting with the white belt and going all the way up to black stripe, which is the last step before becoming a full black belt.

He said among the Arviat students, some will be tested to move from white belt to yellow stripe, from yellow stripe to yellow belt, from yellow belt to green stripe and from green stripe into their green belt.

"We put them through set-requirement testing," said Ripley.

"They must perform self-defense, proper techniques of kicking and what we call three-step sparring based on the specific patterns of each belt level."

Ripley said taekwon-do is an art specifically designed for self-defense only.

He said over the years, the sport side of taekwon-do has been developed and participants now compete in the ring with sparring.

"If you've seen the Olympics, that is the World Taekwon-do Federation style of sparring which is mainly just kicking," he said.

"In the International Taekwon-do Federation system, we use hand-

The Arviat club has grown to more than 40 youth members since having seven its first night and has since been opened-up to the entire community.

The club now boasts family members and senior members, with its youngest member being five years old.

Ripley said he sees great things for the club moving forward. He said the Arviat students are dedicated,

eager to work and quick to learn.

"It's amazing to see how far they've come in such a short period of time, especially when they don't practice with the club over the summer.

"If I can share my passion for taekwon-do with someone to help give them better insight and understanding into what we actually do, I'm fulfilling my part in honouring our founder, Gen. Choi (Hong Hi), who passed away back in 2002 and helping to spread taekwon-do throughout the world."

Ripley said one of the golden rules with his students is that he does not allow street fighting of any kind and he has expelled two of his taekwon-do students for breaking that rule.

He said he also does not allow his students to show-off to their friends or try to teach them taekwon-do they've learned.

"If you just show-off to your friends and they go out and try it, they could actually hurt someone quite badly," he said.

"So, if someone breaks my golden rules, my doors are closed to that person.

"From day one, taekwon-do is strictly self defense; defending yourself, your family members, or someone desperately in need of assistance because they are unable to protect themselves."

Ripley, 65, started with taekwondo 35 years ago and said he plans to keep on practicing it until his body won't allow it anymore.

Augustine is this edition's youth of the week for doing a great job during his first time as a sound technician for a stage production. He was put in charge of cuing the soundscape for the Nemesis of Dracula, including special effects and background and transition music. Way to come through, Augustine!
