RCMP seize 'large quantities' of drugs in Rankin Rankin Inlet A 35-year-old man from Rankin Inlet has been charged with impaired driving and drug trafficking following an RCMP stop last week.

Among the drugs seized were cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms and shatter, a potent form of cannabis that resembles toffee and gets its name from its glass-like fragility, or the way it shatters under pressure.

The arrest was made after the Mounties responded to a disturbance and the possibility of an impaired driver the evening of May 30, stated a news release.

The exact quantities of the drugs in question were not specified.

The accused's next court appearance was set for June 10 in Rankin Inlet.

The Rankin Inlet RCMP continue to investigate the matter with the assistance of the RCMP Federal Operation Section in Iqaluit.

Northern Haze returns to Rankin Rankin Inlet Nunavut's favourite rockers Northern Haze will be returning to Rankin Inlet to perform at the community's annual SolFest this weekend.

The band will play a free concert outside the arena on June 16 starting at 1 p.m.

They will be joined by local performers Kayden Mercer and Lucien Taleriktok.

The night before, Northen Haze will play a private gala dinner on the night of June 15 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets for the gala can be purchased from the Rankin Inlet Fire Department. Money raised through the event and the raffles associated with it will go toward supporting the department.

Summer camp registration open Rankin Inlet Registration for summer camp in Rankin Inlet is now open. The camp will run from June 24 to August 9 and is open to children between the ages of 5 and 10.

There will be lots of fun activities planned throughout the summer, including crafts, outdoor activities, a bouncy castle, and more.

Angoshadluk said he gets an average of five people asking to join every day – once had 250 ask to join in a single day.

Between himself and another moderator in Cambridge Bay, they ensure that there are no fake accounts and that people are not posting content that isn't Northern.

Ninety per cent of the page's 10,000 followers come from Canada, with the United States a distant second, followed

by Greenland.

However, Angoshadluk has connected with people from all over the world through the page. A few years ago he even got a message from a school teacher in Australia who was using the images from the page to teach her students about the North.

"She thanked me for creating this page," he said.

Angoshadluk said he has been blown away by the quality of the contributors, especially as the page has evolved. So far the page has featured mostly landscapes, however more and more people are posting pictures of people. Angoshadluk said he would particularly like to see old archival photos that show how people used to live in the North.

"When I look at something like that, I just think, what kind of life did they live.

How far did they have to walk? Did they have to move somewhere to eat off the land. It just amazes me."

Angoshadluk started the page to share pictures which showcased the beautiful scenery, animals and people of Arctic nations all around the world.

Travelling to places unknown from the comfort of home Northern News Services

After a long week at work, most of us spend our Friday afternoons looking forward to some kind of escape.

At this time of year, most families turn to the land to get outside the bubble of the workday grind. Last weekend, I was hoping to do just that until the nasty weather rolled in from the north-east and pinned me indoors for the better part of Saturday.

With the exception of sports and a few bad comedies, I don't watch much TV. But as the wind whistled between the buildings outside, I decided to flip it on to keep me company.

Much to my delight, I discovered one of the stations was airing an Anthony Bourdain marathon. BourSanikiluaq dain was a chef and travel writer who shot up to fame as the host of his own television show Parts Unknown, in which he would travel all over the world in search of hidden cultures and rich culinary traditions. Last Saturday marked the one year anniversary of his death by suicide.

Bourdain was well-known for his kind demeanour, infinite curiosity, and his understated charm. I did not follow his career closely, but I remember being shaken up when I heard the news of his passing.

Those feelings lingered as I let him transport me to Vietnam, Iran, Japan, the United States' deep south – all places I was so curious about but

Summer traffic crackdown begins As warmer weather arrives, Rankin Inlet bylaw to start handing out tickets for violations

Motorists on ATVs who flout traffic laws in Rankin Inlet may soon be getting a nasty surprise.

Last week, the head of the community's bylaw announced the department would begin its annual crackdown on dangerous driving.

The department will only issue warnings for the next week. However, as of June 17, it will begin handing out tickets for a range of violations.

The department plans to enforce any infractions which contravene territorial and hamlet bylaws, with a focus on those not wearing helmets, speeding, disobeying stop signs and driving without licences or registrations.

Most infractions carry a fine of $25, with the exception of excessive speeding and dangerous driving, which can earn a $500 ticket and an impounded vehicle.

Of all the rules of the road, the helmet requirement and insurance have been the most contentious.

Up until this year, helmets were only required under hamlet bylaw. However, updates to Nunavut's Traffic Safety Act came into effect on Dec. 31, making helmets mandatory for ATV operators across the territory.

Responding to comments on a community Facebook page, Fire Chief Mark Wyatt, who is also in charge of the bylaw, stated helmets are required in town but not on the land.

"However, we do have people who have used this excuse and are still using it

in town. That will get you a ticket," he stated.

He also addressed concerns of one commenter who argued that insurance and registration do not affect road safety.

"We don't make the laws.

We follow the Nunavut Traffic Act. Insurance is there for a common sense reason. If you are driving and accidentally hit someone or something, you are liable for the damage. If you injure someone, including a passenger on your own Honda, you could be liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would say that is a big safety concern."

Meanwhile, during a hamlet meeting at the end of May, several councillors said they would like to look into finding ways to increase safety.

At least three councillors said they would like to have the hamlet review its traffic bylaws. Some of the items they wanted to look at were lowering the speed limit, having more school zones and adding signs to encourage people to follow the law.

The speed limit in town is currently 50 km/h unless otherwise marked. In school zones it is 20 km/h.

"Some people don't slow down whatsoever," said Coun.

Lynn Rudd during the meeting. "I'm scared to see kids running and walking and vehicles are going almost 40."

Council has the authority to change the hamlet's traffic bylaws though a majority vote.

They are expected to review the existing laws and debate potential changes at a future council meeting.

Rankin health fair tackles big issues Second annual event features student projects on addiction, sexual health and balanced diet

Students in Grade 7 and 8 at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik took part in the school's second annual health fair on June 6.

The fair featured student projects about addiction, sexual health and balanced diets, among other topics.

"Every part of this has something to do with someone's emotional, physical and mental well-being," said Grade 7 teacher Jennifer Webb, who was responsible for founding the health fair last year.

She said one of the reasons she wanted an end-of-year event is because the health module has no final exams and instead relies on projects for grading.

"I figured if they were going to do something big, we might as well involve the whole community," she said.

When it started it was just for Grade 7, but this year saw the addition of projects from the school's Grade 8 students.

Some students worked on their projects alone while others were partnered up.

Grade 8 students Deanne Angidlik did her project on the dangers of cannabis. She said she didn't know much about the drug until she started researching it.

"There is no safe level of substance abuse for teens with developing brains," she said. "I hope other people learn from this and know that it's not safe to smoke marijuana."

Allana Airut and Maxine Ronald did their project on sexual health.

They decided to focus on sexually transmitted diseases because they thought it would have shock value.

However after spending time learning about how dangerous STDs can be, they took it more seriously.

"We kind of thought it was funny at first and there was the shock factor. But then we started getting more interested and did a bunch of research and we didn't laugh as much," said Ronald. "It's kind of scary to know what's possible."

The event was open to the public. Parents and students from other schools came to check out the presentations throughout the afternoon.

"There were quite a few parents and kids that weren't even involved with the fair," said Webb.
