Parks Day Rankin Inlet A modest crowd headed-out to Iqalugaarjuup Nunanga Territorial Park to check-out the scene at the Elder's Cabin for Parks Day celebrations in Rankin Inlet on July 20.

Buses were available to transport those who needed a lift to the event, which ran from noon until 3 p.m.

Among the scheduled activities were a barbecue, games and prizes.

Family Fun Day Rankin Inlet The Agnico Eagle Family Fun Day will be held outside the community recreation hall in Rankin Inlet this coming Saturday, July 27, beginning at 1 p.m.

Scheduled treats, attractions and activities include a free barbecue, live music, an ice-cream bar, cupcakes, a kid's carnival, dunk tank, Bouncy Castles, face painting, draws and a square dance.

Volunteer advisor Baker Lake The Abluqta Society seeks a volunteer to take the role of financial advisor to the society in Baker Lake.

Anyone looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity, and who has financial knowledge and experience to share, is asked to apply to the Abluqta Society by July 31.

Pride in the product Canadian flag bearer true believer in Young Living

There's no feeling quite like having a lot of success with a product line you truly believe in.

Essential oils (aromatherapy) from Young Living have become a lifestyle choice for millions of consumers in Canada, and Ashley Tulugak of Rankin Inlet was proud to represent each-and-every one as she carried the Canadian flag for the opening ceremonies of the 25th anniversary of Young Living's International Sanikiluaq Grand Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A., on July 16.

Tulugak said members of her distribution team started to see a lot of success with the Young Living products about a year ago.

She said her team members all loved the products and wanted to share them with others, so they choose to pursue Young Living as a business opportunity in their community.

"Those members saw a lot of success, were able to earn some extra income and win some prizes, so I was feeling really proud of them for all their dedication and hard

work," said Tulugak.

"You feel a real shift when you start using essential oils in your home. They help calm you."

Tulugak said a colleague posted online information about the products, which got her interested.

"I've participated in a number of classes to learn about what you can do to remove toxins from your home, and which products offer healthier-and-safer choices for me and my family," she said.

"I have a genetic skin disorder called psoriasis. Young Living products have helped me deal with that, including making healthier eating choices."

Close to 50 countries involved with Young Living were represented at the convention, with about 35,000 members taking part in the three-day event.

Tulugak said she's been working closely with Young Living leadership and corporate teams to address some of the shipping issues that plague the North.

She said the team members have worked with her to resolve the issues, and even came to Rankin Inlet to host an event this past year.

Bike rodeo Rankin Inlet A bike rodeo will be held at Victor's Playground this coming Friday, July 26, in Rankin Inlet from 1:15 to 4 p.m.

Participants are asked to meet at the playground by 1:15 p.m. to assemble for the parade, which begins at 1:30 p.m.

The rodeo is a joint activity of the Rankin Inlet detachment of the RCMP, the Rankin Inlet Fire Department and the local Department of Public Health.

The rodeo is scheduled to include road and helmet safety, basic first-aid training, bike inspections and great prizes, including prizes for parents taking part in the event.

Softball tourney Rankin Inlet The hamlet of Rankin Inlet will host a softball tournament this coming weekend, July 26 to 28, for youth born in 2003 or younger.

Scheduled to compete in the tourney are two teams from Rankin Inlet, and well as teams from Arviat, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour and Whale Cove.

Festival time Baker Lake Event organizers are currently taking suggestions for what local residents would like to see at the upcoming Festival by the Lake in Baker Lake next month.

This year's Festival by the Lake will run from Aug. 23 to 25.

Kayden Mercer: A star on the rise Rankin teen doing well in first year on stage

It's been quite the ride for young musician Kayden Mercer since he decided to pick up a guitar to learn how to play and write songs less than a year ago in Rankin Inlet.

Mercer, 14, could look back upon his musical career one day and make a strong case for the saying "mother knows best," considering he first started learning the guitar in October of 2018 after his mom, Holly Mercer, saw

his attraction to the instrument and asked him if he'd like to learn to play.

Kayden said he was fortunately in the mood to try something new at the time, so he took up his mother on her suggestion.

He said playing guitar did not come all that easily to him and his heavy practice routine had his fingers full of calluses and blisters – but he started making good progress on the instrument thanks to a little help from his friends (and fellow performing art-

ists), Sam Tutanuak, Martin Walach and Jennifer Wakegijiq.

"I got a bit of help from other musicians in the community while I was learning and that felt just great," said Kayden.

"Their help had me feeling humble, to be honest, because a number of them had toured around Nunavut and other parts of the country.

"It was really nice of them to find the time to help me begin my journey."

Kayden cites classic rock

from the 1970s and 1980s as his favourite grooves; being particularly influenced by the likes of The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, ZZ Top and John Mellencamp – with a dash of Queen thrownin for the sizzle.

He said he began writing song lyrics about a month after he began studying the guitar.

"I was always interested in writing my own songs once I got good enough on the guitar to begin the process.

"For me, every song I

write seems to be different when it comes to the process, but I lean more toward coming up with a riff I like first and then trying to write lyrics to fit the riff."

For now, Kayden said, he plans to stay focused on

improving both his guitar playing and lyric writing, while constantly being on the lookout for venues to play.

"I was pretty lucky to be included in both Solfest and the Nunavut Day concert during my first year," he said.

The value of leadership – near and far Northern News Services

It has really been something to watch Kivalliq students and athletes travelling all over the world during the past little while.

And, it is nothing short of mind numbing to get your head around just how much money it has taken for these youths to have such wonderful opportunities presented to them.

Then, when you look at the level of dedication shown by individuals such as former Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik teacher and Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights) gymnastics club founder and head coach Lisa Kresky – you have to slowly shake your head in admiration for all she managed to accomplish in Rankin Inlet, and how many youth Sanikiluaq benefitted from her never-say-die attitude.

Roll back the clock a couple of years and those were some pretty big dreams Kresky planted in the heads of her competitive gymnastics – to attend such events as the ones held in Las Vegas, Nev., and Vancouver, B.C., before topping it all off with the World Gymnaestrada in Dornbirn, Austria.

And she came through on all three. Wow! Kudos have to be given to every government agency, regional organization, sports association and private business that backed the gymnastics program in Rankin and donated funds to help these girls live their dreams.

However, there were still plenty

Hazy days of fun Solfest weekend continues to be a major hit in Rankin Inlet

Big crowds produce long lineups for every activity and treat during the Solfest outdoor concert and community celebration in Rankin Inlet on June 16.

The spectacle may have only just completed its third year, but the legacy of the annual Solfest Gala and outdoor concert is slowly beginning to take shape around topnotch headlining performers and support opportunities for strong local talent after a third-straight success was racked-up in Rankin Inlet.

This year's event saw Inuit rockers, Northern Haze, return to Rankin to rock the Solfest Gala and concert for a second time on June 15 and 16.

Lucien Taleriktok and DJ Gabe also performed during the gala, while Taleriktok and young artist Kayden Mercer joined Northern Haze for the outdoor concert.

Northern Haze also headlined the original 2017 Solfest concert, being joined by Terrie Kusugak, Angnakuluk and the Midnight News, while the Jerry Cans took centre stage in 2018, also supported by Terrie Kusugak and the Midnight News.

Rankin Inlet Fire Department Chief Mark Wyatt said he and his fellow firefighters put the word out around the community numerous times, asking which band people would most like to see perform at the 2019 edition of Solfest.

He said the name that kept coming back was Northern Haze, so the rockers were booked to appear again.

"It was obvious that Northern Haze was the favourite choice by many of those who let us know who they wanted to appear," said Wyatt.

"I asked about having the Jerry Cans make their second appearance, or, perhaps, having Twin Flames headline this

year, but Northern Haze was the name that kept coming back to us.

"They're a pretty popular band up here."

The Solfest Gala is an indoor fundraiser for the local fire department, which also holds a giant raffle at the same time.

The following day's outdoor concert is free of charge as a way for the department to give a little something back to the community, and the hamlet also has the Bouncy Castles out for the kids to make the afternoon a true family event.

Wyatt said the grand prize for this year's raffle was an Arctic Cat 500 with a custom-built trailer, and the gala was completely sold out once again.

He said both the gala and the outdoor concert were well-received by the community.

"We do these special events as fundraisers, but, honestly, we make more money off of bingo than we do from them, especially for the amount of work that goes into it all.

"But we did manage to raise about $15,000 for the department with Solfest, as well as a lot of good will with the community.

"We still pay most of the bands for their outdoor performance, even though the concert is free to the public.

They don't charge us nearly as much for the outdoor Sunday performance, but we still have a lot of expenses because of giving away hotdogs and all sorts of other things.

"It's, more or less, our version of a family fun day, with the recreation department bringing out all its Bouncy Castle attractions for the kids and M&T providing the stage.

It works out quite well."

Funding sparks new training centre Agnico Eagle Mines donates $250,000 toward design and construction of firefighter facility

Rankin Inlet Fire Department Chief Mark Wyatt saw one of his top priorities move a giant-step closer to reality when Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) recently donated $250,000 toward the design and construction of a Kivalliq Regional Fire Training Centre.

Wyatt said he initially talked to AEM about the need for a proper training facility in Rankin Inlet while the community was hosting Operation Nanook about 18 months ago.

He said that conversation ultimately led to him submitting a proposal to AEM for the training centre about three months ago.

"Our fire department has been training in the middle of Rankin's smelly old dump for years," said Wyatt. "It's reached the point where (a) that doesn't work anymore and (b) it never did in terms of actually training firefighters properly to experience live-fire types of conditions.

"We designed a training building, talked to the hamlet about finding space to move the training ground to, and secured a site behind the ball field for the facility."

Wyatt said the building will be constructed in the south and shipped to Rankin.

The facility will be built out of five 40-foot sea cans and one 20-footer, with everything being

custom built on the inside, including a concrete floor.

"On the first floor, we'll have two steel-lined burn rooms and movable steel walls to create a maze for search-and-rescue training," he said.

"Go up the stairs to the second floor and you'll find a full apartment, with a bedroom, living room, hallway and a kitchen with another burn room in it."

A sprinkler system will be installed on the first two floors, he added, while the third floor will a have confined-space room that you enter from the roof to conduct confined-space training.

It will also have a hatch between the second and third floors "so we can practice rescuing someone who falls through the floor to the next level and getting them out of the building," he said.

Wyatt's proposal highlighted how AEM has a fire department with no training and no place to train, while Rankin has a fire department that needs much better training, and every fire department in the region needs a place where it can actually conduct proper training.

AEM will be able to utilize the building and the Rankin department will be able to manage it.

"Our department has also raised $100,000 toward the building, which leaves me with about another $200,000 to raise through other sources to, basically, finish

so that, in addition to the Rankin and AEM firefighters, we can also teach live-fire training to firefighters across the Kivalliq.

"Firefighters throughout the region need to be able to properly train for the conditions they face

and this facility will provide that.

"We're building this for the benefit of everyone – safety for the community, safety and training for our firefighters, and increased safety and proper training for every department across the Kivalliq."

Hundreds of people packed the community hall to take part in Nunavut Day festivities in Baker Lake on July 9.
