Timber Technology Engineering and Design

Short Courses

Timber Technology Engineering and Design (TED) short courses provide comprehensive and flexible training to upskill and reskill training for modern methods of timber construction. You will gain specialist knowledge and skills relating to the use of timber in the built environment, and you’ll be equipped to respond to the climate crisis, able to build ‘better, faster and greener’.

You will learn to build sustainably with timber, from components to assemblies, designing with a knowledge of how timber structures are manufactured and assembled. You will experience a hybrid model that combines remote and residential learning with access to a virtual learning environment, providing the latest industry thinking and guided by academic and industry experts.

A series of short engaging residentials are hosted at the Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT) at NMITE’s Skylon Campus. You see technologies in action, interact with fellow students from across the value chain, make site visits, and collaborate on practical design projects using our state-of-the-art materials and equipment.

» In TED 1 you will learn about timber as a structural material and the array of product options available, and you’ll draw on this to respond to a sustainable design brief.

» In TED 2 you will develop a deeper understanding of timber construction technologies, and the manufacture and assembly approaches that translate these to sustainable, useful, and attractive structures. You’ll draw on this knowledge to respond to a more challenging sustainable design brief.

“What an enjoyable way to future proof my skill-set in the concepts of sustainability and timber construction. This unique course has made me appreciate the sustainable built environment and the principles of sustainable timber design in construction. I have enjoyed networking with other professionals and feel lucky to be part of a community of knowledge in helping timber transform the built environment”.

10

“I joined the TED 1 course as I looked to start to specialise within my early career as an Architect. I found it staggering that within the UK we don’t have the ability to mass produce engineered timber and import the majority of our timber used within the UK Construction Industry from mainland Europe. I believe that courses such as TED 1 offered at NMITE are required by the industry if we hope to diversify our knowledge of more sustainable construction materials and methods to reach our Net Zero 2050 ambitions.”
