In 1866 the blue plaque scheme was established in London to celebrate its notable residents, linking “the people of the past with the buildings of the present”. For those in search of a piece of NLCS history I would suggest a journey to Sandall Road in Kentish town where one such plaque is affixed to Camden School for Girls commemorating Frances Mary Buss as a pioneer of education. Her successor Sophie Bryant, the first English woman to be awarded a doctorate degree in science, was also considered an educational pioneer and a key figure in the development of NLCS. Indeed, ever since its inception NLCS students and teachers have felt great pride in the pioneering spirit of our great institution.

Reflecting on the growth of NLCS Dubai and the successes of this academic year gives me great pride. This is a pride that goes beyond our superb examination results, sporting triumphs or achievements in the creative arts, but a pride that at NLCS Dubai we continue to embody the pioneering spirit which was the very cornerstone of the foundation of NLCS. It is hard to describe the sheer breadth of activities we have enjoyed from House competitions to concerts and productions, or from our local and international service to our charitable contributions. It is in these activities, in our scholarly ethos, and in all that we achieve, that we continue to celebrate the values of our Founder and all those who have been a part of the NLCS family.

A reflection on our pioneering spirit would not be complete without a few words about our outgoing Principal Mr Monaghan, who leaves us to set up a new NLCS school. Having been a key part of the establishment of both NLCS Jeju and NLCS Dubai, we say goodbye to a Principal who has undoubtedly earned his blue plaque in the evolving history of our great family of schools, and whose pioneering spirit, good humour and belief in the talents of our students has been key in making NLCS Dubai the wonderful school we all enjoy today.
