Grade 3 from Kathy Urban

Grade 3 were invited to meet Kathy Urban, a famous children’s author who wrote a book called Hop Lola Hop, which was illustrated by Siska Kala. The book was based on her own daughter and a toy bunny called Lola. At first, Kathy thought writing would be quite straight forward, but she soon realised that it was a long process that took nine months for her to complete.

While Kathy was writing, Siskin was also having trouble; the bunny she first drew looked too realistic. Kathy wanted the reader to think it was a toy bunny, so she drew clothing on Lola. Once the story and illustrations were complete, Kathy then had to find an editor and after that her story was published it. She showed us the different drafts of her book which were very interesting to look at.

It was a very informative visit and we enjoyed hearing about the process of writing your own book, from the first idea to it being printed and sold in shops. Kathy’s visit inspired us to write our own stories, that one day may also be published.

In our learning we grew and grew, There were many experiences that were new. Ellis Island role play was little scary, The teachers were extremely wary, They were pretending to be the guards at the port, It was trickier to get in than we all thought!

The residential was an adventure for all, Our first overnight trip away from school. We pushed ourselves to be courageous, The size of the climbing wall was outrageous! We helped each other in times of need, Each challenge was harder than it seemed.
