Thankfully, with many of the COVID-19 restrictions easing, the last few weeks have been packed with exciting sporting events Firstly, on March 6,Year 12 girls organised an inter-house netball tournament. Please have a look at the image below.

Congratulations to Mulchat, the champions of the inter-house netball tournament Also, on the 6th of March, an inter-house MS Football Tournament took place. Please take a read of the tournament report written by Haayoon Shin Yr11 On March 6 2021, the NLCS MS Football Tournament took place at the old Astro from 9.00 to 12.00. Four boarding houses: Geomun, Jeoji, Noro, and Sarah, participated in the tournament; Mulchat could not participate due to the scheduled exeats. Each house played against one another at the group stage, and the top two houses at the group stage, Geomun, and Noro advanced to the final match. The champion of the tournament was Geomun as they won the final match against Noro. After the tournament, the players had drinks prepared by Mr. Scargill. This

These two events are only part of the many sporting events we have had recently. Over the last two-three weeks, teams from our school took part in 18 matches over 9 tournaments/ meets.

Interview with Derek Kim Nick Oh Derek Kim, a Year 10 student from Jeoji, has recently joined the U-17 Korean Fencing National Team. It is truly amazing that he can achieve such a high level of competition while achieving the high academic standards of our School. Today, Derek shares with us his fencing journey. I hope you enjoy this week’s interview.

How did you get to start fencing?

When Derek Kim was in Year 6, he had to sign up for the CCA programme. He initially wanted to choose basketball for his CCA. However, he had always done basketball before. Therefore, his mother suggested that he try a different sport since it may help him find a new passion.

After trying out fencing for the first time in his life as a Year 6 student, Derek immediately fell in love with the sport. He tells me that he really liked the short periods of extreme tension between him and the opponent.

From when did you start to take fencing seriously?

After participating in the CCA fencing for a few terms, Derek participated in his first fencing competition as a Year 7 student. Derek proudly walked away with second place from his first competition. With his growing passion for the sport, he participated in more fencing competitions.

Surprisingly, he consistently performed well in all the competitions he took part in, which made him consider fencing a more serious part of his current life.

As he gained fencing experience and participated in more competitions, he realized that he required more practice time to improve his performance. This led him to join a fencing academy.

He fenced for approximately two hours every other day from the day he joined his local fencing academy.

What was your journey to becoming a member of the national team like?

Although he thoroughly enjoyed the sport, he claims that fencing so many times a week was physically demanding.To date, he has taken part in over 25 fencing tournaments around the world, and recently, he took part in a professional fencing camp. In this fencing camp, he had to take part in many different exercises that he hadn’t done before, which often pushed him to his physical limits.

After many hours of preparation, he took part in his first elite fencing tournament, which would help him earn a place in the U-17 national team. Unfortunately, in his first elite tournament, he was eliminated in the preliminary rounds. However, this did not discourage Derek. After more consistent practice, he participated in his second, third, and eventually fourth elite fencing tournament.

In his fourth elite tournament, he lost in the quarter-finals but was able to win in the third-place playoff. Having placed in the top three in the elite fencing competition, he finally succeeded in joining the U-17 Korean National Fencing Team.

Where are you headed next?

Derek has an international fencing competition most closely coming up on the April 6; this international event is being hosted in Egypt. He is currently preparing for that with his fencing coach. Every weekday he does various strength & conditioning exercises and other fencing

practices for two hours. On the weekends, he fences against his coach to apply what he had learned over the week into his game.

Derek’s ultimate aim in the upcoming competition is to place in the top 3. Let’s all hope Derek performs the best he can in Egypt!
