How I find my true colours Shona Hyun Park

I have always felt like I was on the edge of plummeting down into a great bleak pit and let me admit it, it’s not the very best feeling. Constantly filled with anxiety and millions of worries roaming through my head, I was not able to relish small little things that would eventually bring me happiness. Being aligned with academic pressure, my focal point shifted to my future in what I have to do, what I was required of, what was needed to be done, instead of focusing on the present with all the exceptional quality of education I was grateful for being provided with, and all the accomplished people I surround myself with. Soon my disorientated worries metamorphosed into impacting my physical health such as extreme pain in my abdomen and experiencing severe headaches. However, the very purpose of this article is not to illustrate my struggles in coping with the pressure but to share my journey that I soon realised a lot of people around me were suffering as much as I was.

I have always been attached to the idea of diverse elaborate movements of my body parts to create something divine, which I later learned that can be explored through diverse sports. After going into a higher year group, I soon distanced myself from the sports sector that has always been a part of my daily life. Twenty minutes of night stretch that allowed me to loosen my muscles, and vigorous dance movements with friends that bonded us together and alleviated my mood amid all the heavily weighted burden that pushed me under the water. These small movements allowed me to resurface to the shore simply allowing me to enjoy negligible moments in my life. However, now with the absence of daily exercises, I felt like I was missing a significant but incomprehensible piece that reflected who I was. But, luckily here in NLCS Jeju we

can always find time to engage ourselves with ventures that motivates us and form who we are today and that was exactly what I did.

During the last summer, I engaged myself in Pilates, an exercise that uses special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, and enhance mental awareness. Pilates has been a core part of my life before I decided to surrender due to my lack of flexibility and endurance. However, looking at numerous NLCS Jeju students who were so keen and passionate about “their” sports and upcoming Kisac competitions, it made me want to fabricate and continue so-called “my” sports.

After multiple one to one sessions in Pilates, I found myself being exuberant with the sense of enthralling energy when I positioned my body in graceful manners. Although it was a journey with colossal amounts of sweat and shaking breaths, I found myself being able to explore minor things that I was grateful for instead of addressing things I had to do, I had to endure, and I had to be burdened with. I am not saying that playing sports suddenly forms inner peace, but doing 3

something that you love and moving your body in synchronising rhythm provides you with a significant stepping stone in finding your true colours. And through Pilates, this is how I found mine.

Interview on Ella Jo,Year 7 Shabell (Sharon.Y Bella.K)

“When I was young, I wasn’t a good swimmer. I always wanted to give up, and there always stood challenges. But I overcame them.” - Ella Jo Year 7 -

One of our star swimmers here in NLCS Jeju is Ella Jo in Year 7. She is an amazing swimmer with a splendid career. For such talent, the sports council decided to interview her, and discover more about who she is as an athlete. While asking her questions and receiving responses, we realised once more that there are so many wonderful sports players in our school that have a vision, talent, and inspiration.

Ella was only 6 years old when she started swimming, but she was also interested in other sports, such as running and attended competitions that were held mostly in Jeju, in the biggest sports hall where most events are held annually. She joined the swim squad every year to enhance her skills and her interest in running also grew.

She continuously participated in multiple competitions such as competitions held in the Hala gym.

At the age of 10, she began to show interest in football and continued to develop her skills rapidly and consistently until Year 6. Moving on to senior school her interest \ in swimming developed which was her childhood passion. She participated in tournaments and registered herself to be a part of the swimming CCAs. But, did she always enjoy swimming? No! She always felt like giving up and quitting, but she overcame those moments and challenged herself to be a true sports player like the one she is today. She says, “When I was young, I wasn’t a good swimmer. And challenges constantly faced me. But I overcame them.”

Ella does think that there are a variety of different sports that we can play in NLCS Jeju, but also mentions that there are ‘limited number of sports CCAs.’ Since there are only three CCAs we can explore and four when including our Bryants, she thinks that there are fewer opportunities to find potential talent in other types of sports just as she enjoys playing football, swimming, running..etc.

Ella Jo has a true passion for sports and currently is an active member of our NLCS sports community. She participates in KISACs and volunteers to be a part of the house competitions held in NLCS Jeju. With such enthusiastic students like Ella, the NLCS sports community develops day by day.

How can you prepare for NLCS Jeju House Competitions?

Every week in NLCS Jeju, there is an exciting moment of competition happening around the senior school. Sparks of eagerness, hollars of encouragement, dusty air due to the loud stomping of the crowd cheering on their houses; this is NLCS Jeju’s House Competition, an event that is most anticipated by students during the week. These House Competitions vary from many different activities, ranging from House drama performance to basketball in many divisions. Today, the article will mainly focus on the athletic House Competitions because it requires the most teamwork and cooperation. However, most houses don’t really prep for these “What-might-beexciting” Competitions. Without further ado, let’s jump right in!

How can a practice be successful?

1.

The first process is to know what the Competition is for the upcoming Monday. This would be one of the easiest steps because every Friday at House Meeting time, the activity is announced and people can start joining and putting their names forward for the events.

Then comes the recruiting part. This part might be challenging due to the fact that fewer or more people applied for the limited spots. At this point, the decision is up to the House Masters and the House Captains of the Year groups. However, let’s not forget that the main target of the House Competition is to have fun competing and playing with your fellow friends. Now the preparation for the practices is done.

Normally the team that is entering the House Competition is mixed with boarders and day students and therefore, the only time left for the whole group to practice is Saturday Afternoon, just after Bryant, which is from 1 pm ~3 pm. These 2 hours chunks of time are the only hours that a day student can enter the school without any other note or excuses.

So, if anyone is willing to practice, they are free to do so. In this precious period of time, people can do various activities; assigning positions, deciding on the order to perform, practising teamwork, or even just simply encouraging their friends for mental reliance.

Since nothing is taken for granted, these efforts will later blossom as great scores for your team and increase the potentials for high rankings.

The 4th step is one of the most obvious ones, but the most crucial one that most people often neglect. It is the amount of sleep you get the night before the competition. Sleep has been proven by many scientists and doctors, to be one of the most important factors that affect your concentration even in a split second. So in a competition that requires massive

concentration, the results differ by a single point and sleeping plentifully the day before is definitely a necessary step.

5.

Last but not least, the need for a positive mindset. After all the petty discussions, House Competition is down to having fun at the end of the day. Whatever people do, whatever the result, it is important to respect each other and keep the games fun and fair. So, just enjoy it.

From now on, all readers of this article know exactly how to prepare for a House Competition, bet on the stars, and try your best to get closer to victory. Maybe it is not as far as you think it is.
