About us Nkuku specialise in eco-friendly, fair trade, home wares and gifts.

All our products are inspired by the traditional skills of artisans throughout Africa and India. We combine contemporary design with age old traditions, natural materials and sustainable methods of production.

Nkuku was founded in 2003 by Ali & Alex Cooke. The idea came from a year out travelling. The name ‘Nkuku’ was borrowed from a village in Zambia and the business plan was jotted down on the cover of a paperback, on a beach off Malaysia. On our return to the UK we moved out of London to south Devon, and so began the journey of Nkuku!

Fa i r T r a d e At Nkuku, we believe that it is possible to build ethical and fair trade business relationships with our suppliers. We are delighted to work with a number of different producer groups from family businesses and co-operatives to social enterprises and charities.

Nkuku practice the 10 principles of fair trade (see page 132).

Environment Nkuku is an environmentally aware company. We endeavour to create products using natural and recycled materials through a handmade process. We consider the environment in everything we do and this has a large impact on the products that we sell.

G l ass The process of making our recycled glass products starts by collecting waste glass.

This is then sorted by colour and washed to remove any impurities. The glass is then crushed and melted down and moulded either by hand or in moulds to create beautiful new products. Recycling glass not only requires 30 % less energy to melt when compared with raw material but using less energy means less fuel is burnt and less emissions. This means we can create new beautiful glass products with less impact on our environment.

C o tt o n Pa p e r Our photograph albums and journals are handmade from cotton paper. Created from pieces of recycled cotton rag, this ancient paper making skill has been passed on from generation to generation. The cotton is not grown specifically for papermaking; instead, we collect the cotton left over from the clothing industry. It would otherwise go to waste. Cotton paper is considered tree free as no wood pulp is used and fewer chemicals are required for processing cotton paper than other paper. Making cotton paper also produces less waste and provides the perfect acid free paper suitable for photograph albums and journals.
