INTRODUCTION
Our Story It started with a journey… and a journal. Ten years ago we set out on a life-changing adventure, travelling the world and discovering talented craftspeople and their beautiful work along the way. It inspired us to do something different, so we moved to rural Devon and started working with artisans throughout the world, supporting and celebrating their skills by bringing their products to a wider audience. Our name was borrowed from a hut in Zambia, our business plan jotted on the cover of a paperback and our first order was for exquisite leather journals that we still sell today. Our team and products may have grown, but we still have the same hands-on approach, meeting and working with all our makers personally. That’s how we know that every product has a story to tell…

We think that ethical business is good business, that’s why we work to make sure that all the people involved in Nkuku, from producers to employees treat each other fairly and with respect.
We care about the environment and this has an impact on how we go about our work. We work with natural and recycled materials through sustainable methods of production and this shapes our collections.
We want to make sure that age-old traditions are handed onto future generations. This is one of the reasons why handmade products create the core of our business. The relationship between an artisan and a beautiful handmade piece creates a story and makes each product not a mass market item, but an individually crafted piece.

Our glassware is handmade from recycled glass. Firstly, we collect and wash the waste glass to remove any impurities; it's then crushed and melted down before being hand blown or placed in moulds to create beautiful new products.

Meet the Artisans
Yusut A FRAMER FROM UTTAR PRADESH Yusut lives with his six brothers and sisters in their family home in a village outside Moradabad. He has a motorbike and commutes into work each day. Yusut’s specialist skill is to shape the metal frame around the internal glass used with our Kiko frames, lanterns and other t-lights, this job takes time, and attention to detail. Yusut spends his spare time watching and playing street cricket. He says that he also enjoys walking in the park with his friends. The place Yusut would most like to visit is the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

MEET THE ARTISANS
Gyarsi AN ARTISAN FROM RAJASTHAN Gyarsi is married with five children, her oldest child is now twenty seven years old. Gyarsi takes the bus to work each day, the bus is provided by the company she works for. Gyarsi’s role is finishing each product. This entails rinsing each piece with water and polishing it to ensure no glaze or ceramic dust is left. Gyarsi is yet to leave Jaipur and it is her favourite place in India. However she is interested in visiting Pushka at some stage in her life. Gyarsi likes to cook, but she says her daughterin-law does the majority of the cooking. Her son and daughter-in-law also have a large family of five children and they all live together. In her childhood Gyarsi enjoyed playing traditional Indian games particularly one game that she says is a bit like golf. She feels too old for these sorts of games now and instead enjoys listening to religious and spiritual lectures. She particularly enjoys traditional Bajan religious songs in Hindi. She also says she is a fan of Rajasthani films.

Shagihad A MASTER STITCHER FROM RAJASTHAN Shagihad Khan is from Khava Rani Ji in Rajasthan. He is married and has just had a baby boy. Shagihad enjoys watching and playing cricket. His favourite player is Sachin Tendulkar. Shagihad loves old Hindi songs and his favourite singer is Lata Mangeshkar. He also likes watching television, particularly the movie channels. Shagihad has been a ‘stitcher’ for four years. One of the products Shagihad is responsible for stitching is the braided hemp and this is his favourite product. He would also like to create a new jute bag design.
“I enjoy working here because my colleagues have a good nature and it is a good working environment.”

Our lifestyle store provides the perfect backdrop to showcase our collections, as well as an exciting assortment of reclaimed and antique Indian furniture and other unusual pieces. Come and discover what we hope you will think is a unique and inspiring space. It was over two years ago that we first stumbled across a beautiful courtyard of stone barns, located just outside of Totnes, Devon. The buildings were originally dedicated to farming and cattle and had been derelict for several years. Despite the exposure to the elements and neglect there was a certain magic to the space. Our first taste of the site was enough to inspire us and as we stood surrounded by decaying timber, rubble and a fair amount of cow muck we saw our first store coming to life. The stone buildings are laid out in a horseshoe shape with a courtyard within, this area is south facing and even on cold days if the sun is shining it is a lovely sheltered spot. We were keen to keep as many of the original features and stay true to the original building. In keeping with our Nkuku principles we wanted to restore rather than rebuild. This set about a number of research projects, searching for reclaimed materials and other suitable resources. There was also a fine balance to be found between look and practicalities. Maintaining these important details really make the building what it is today.
Café A LAID-BACK SETTING FOR GREAT COFFEE AND FOOD Our café is located within the store in a calm and atmospheric space, styled with Nkuku products and reclaimed materials. The café serves the finest artisan, wood roasted coffee; served by an experienced barista each blend has been personally curated ensuring a delicious flavour. We have taken care to source local suppliers providing fresh produce and our menu provides delicious choices from deli boards to wood fired pizzas.

Each beautifully sculptured piece is handmade and hand-painted by traditional potters in the north of Vietnam who use age-old processes honed over thousands of years. Their rich culture of influences includes indigenous and Chinese methods. We love the care and attention that is invested in every part of these collections.

Poonkubi A C L AY M A K E R F R O M TA M I L N A D U Poonkubi is from Tamil Nadu and has two school aged children. Poonkubi loves cooking which she learned from her mother. She enjoys experimenting with dishes and coming up with new creations. Poonkubi’s job is to make the clay, which she loves doing. Her favourite product to make is the Mali mug as she loves the colouring part of the process. If she was not working with this scheme Poonkubi would be carrying out agricultural field work.

Jagdish A M E TA L W O R K E R F R OM R A JA S T H A N Jagdish is from Jodpur and he lives there with his family. He has recently got engaged and plans to marry soon. Jagdish cycles to work every day and his job is to work on the decorative punching of the metal sheets. He enjoys working with metal because it responds well to design and is easy to carve. His favourite products to make are photograph frames and mirrors. Jagdish is a big fan of Bollywood romantic films and his favourite actor is Akshay Kumar. When asked about his favourite sport he says 'Cricket of course! Sachin Tendulkar is my favourite player'.
"If I was not working as a metal craftsman I would like to be an electrical mechanic. I have already studied for a year in electrical equipment and repair."

Our selection of furniture combines the traditional iron work skills of artisans in Rajasthan with the carpentry methods of our resident carpenter Angus. The result is a stylish, rustic – industrial collection. The traditional trestle tables are also handmade in our Devon workshop, we love their chunky wood tops and choice of finishes. Meet the Artisans Angus, Carpenter Angus is happily married with four boys. He has worked at Nkuku for nearly four years. His role is to make our bespoke furniture collections. Angus came from a fine arts and sculpture background, and he started making furniture once he left college. He worked with various other carpenters and furniture makers and gleaned a lot of knowledge before he started working on his own designs. Angus started making things from wood to fulfil a practical need to make furniture for his own house and enjoyed creating things so much it then became a way of making a living.

Tasha A M E TA L P O L I S H E R F R OM R A JA S T H A N Tasha is married with a four year old boy, she lives in Jodhpur with her family in a rented house, which is located close to work so Tasha and her husband can walk there together each day. Her mother takes care of her little boy. Tasha says she does not have a desire to travel at the moment, but if she could go anywhere it would be to her favourite place, her home where she was born. Her family moved to Jodhpur several years ago for work. Tasha loves listening to folk music from her local region and knows many songs. Her favourite movie is the first movie she ever saw “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gum”, she says she hasn’t stopped thinking about it ever since! Tasha enjoys her job, her role is to polish and wax the reclaimed items and add the finishing touches to every piece.
