Message from the President Carpe diem! Welcome to the 96th New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Annual Convention. As President, I join President-Elect, Carol Lynch, Executive Director, Jackie Malaska, and the entire Executive Board in welcoming you to this professional development extravaganza. Seize the day, and soak up as much information you can and enjoy every moment you are here! NJAHPERD efforts continue to focus on the theme “Advocacy Moving Forward” with vigor, strength, power, energy, and continued passion. I am proud to say that we took the lead with Assembly Bill A-3256 (Diegnan /Pinkin) requiring K-6 certification to teach Physical Education and Health Education. NJAHPERD provided oral testimony before the Assembly Education Committee and the Bill was voted out of Committee with a 10-0-0 vote. The full Assembly vote passed 76-1-0. The sister bill, S-2245 (Barnes/Allen) was voted out of Committee unanimously. We hope to announce updates on the bill at the Opening Session! With assistance from our partners, we have secured primary sponsors (Peterson/Lagana) to introduce Assembly Bill A-4044, the sister bill to Senate Bill S-1594 (Turner) regarding daily recess in public schools. We look forward to this Bill moving forward in this Legislative session. As President, and on behalf of our NJAHPERD members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners and stakeholders who have collaborated with us over the years. Their continued support to promote policies and programs to ensure healthy active lifestyles for New Jersey’s students, educators and families is appreciated. We are an Association that relies on the talents of all our members for speaking out on our professional guidelines and standards, fighting childhood obesity, developing SGOs and SLO’s and working on assessments to improve instruction. I would be remiss if I did not give a big thank you to our Convention Manager, Jackie Malaska, the office staff, Kimberly Boerner and Michelle Delano, and the Executive Board for all the planning hours devoted to making this convention the premiere professional development event for the Health and Physical Education profession! The Convention will provide you with many 21st Century and beyond sessions and great networking that will enable you to enhance your professional growth. I hope the socials, Awards Banquet, and Grande Finale Raffle add to your personal enjoyment. Please don’t forget to visit the exhibitors and thank them for attending and caring about meeting your needs as an educator and that of your students. My hope is that when you leave the Convention this year you will continue to ADVOCATE for policy change in your school. Your chosen profession does make a difference in our society. Please continue to let your voice be heard. Have a spectacular convention and stop me and say hello. Please enjoy the wonderful Jersey Shore. JoAnn Doherty NJAHPERD President

Welcome from SHAPE America President Dear NJAHPERD Friends: On behalf of my colleagues at the Society of Health and Physical Educators, now known as SHAPE America, I bring you greetings from your national professional organization. Thank you for inviting me to your annual state conference. Having grown up outside Philadelphia and having a son-in-law from Secaucus it is a bit of a homecoming. This year we will be celebrating our 130th anniversary at the 2015 National Convention & Expo in Seattle, Washington. One of my personal goals is to have us all begin thinking of SHAPE America as not just a membership organization, but rather as a cause organization. This means we are united around a specific cause activated around a needed change that members believe in with all their hearts, are marching together to accomplish, and are passionate about encouraging others to join. I think this describes us. We want to change the culture of this country so that every child is supported in growing up “healthy, physically educated and physically active.” As an organization with a cause we will educate, engage and empower ourselves and others in the knowledge and strategies needed to make our vision a reality. We will: • Shape a future where healthy is the norm • Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education • Shape the lifelong habits of young people • Shape and influence policy related to physical education and health education. I hope I can count on you to add your voice, support and energy to realizing our vision—Healthy People – Physically Educated and Physically Active. Sincerely, Dolly Lambdin, Ed.D. SHAPE America President

Greetings!

Welcome from the Executive Director

On behalf of the NJAHPERD Executive Board, welcome to the 2015 Annual Convention at the Jersey Shore. We extend a special thank you to our guests, speakers, exhibitors, and especially to you, our membership. Your attendance validates your personal commitment and makes a powerful statement that our profession is critical in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for everyone in New Jersey! NJAHPERD is committed to providing programs, products and services to reverse the obesity epidemic, but our shared vision for quality health and physical education programs is dependent upon our combined efforts. As Convention Manager, I want to thank the NJAHPERD Executive Board for their commitment and help in planning an excellent program. Many hours are necessary to plan an event of this size and scope. Without the assistance of the countless volunteers, especially our retired members and the smiling faces of the future professionals, your experience would not be as enjoyable. Special thanks to the more than 200 speakers who have developed high quality PD sessions for you and their willingness to share their expertise. The excitement and energy that surrounds us during convention time is truly who we are as professionals. Be proud and recognize that you play a vital role in the educational process of the whole child. Take the time to network with fellow professionals and share your experiences. Examine the latest products and services from our vendors, and applaud NJAHPERD award recipients. Most importantly, reflect on your personal wellness. Take a moment and breathe in the salt air and be mindful of the beautiful ocean view. Enjoy yourself and return to your students refreshed and rejuvenated, with a sense of accomplishment, pride, and a renewed excitement for the best profession ever!

Gian Paul Gonzalez uses the concept of “ALL IN” to challenge audience members to examine their lives at work, with family and in the community and how they can become committed or take it to the next level of commitment. He uses dynamic examples and interactive stories to illustrate his points. Gian Paul outlines the steps that need to be taken to be “ALL IN”. At the start of each session, Gian Paul shows a brief video piece that was shown on national TV about the impact of his ALL IN speech on the N.Y. Giants before they went on to win their last Super Bowl. At the conclusion of each program, Gian Paul challenges everyone to be committed in their own lives-to go ALL IN. He provides blank poker chips for each participant so that they can initial and keep as a symbol of their personal commitment as the Giants football team used this analogy to reach not only the pinnacle of football success, but personal success as well. Gian Paul will be available to answer questions upon the conclusion of the keynote. Gian Paul is a member of A Vision in Motion Speakers Bureau. For more information on his programs please contact his agent Jay Gittleson at A Vision in Motion (www.avisioninmoition.com) or call (800) 883-4147.

Dr. Nettie L. Smith Dr. Nettie L. Smith, for whom this keynote address has been named, was a strong advocate for health, physical education and dance for many years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University and her Master’s and Doctorate from New York University. Dr. Smith taught at the elementary, high school, and college levels in Ohio, Alaska, and New Jersey. She started the Health and Physical education major program at what now is known as Kean University, where she was also chairperson of the department for many years. She served NJAHPERD as president and parliamentarian, along with many other positions. She was on the Executive Board of the EDA of AAHPERD, and was a member of NCATE, the assessment group for colleges and universities. Dr. Smith was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a nationally known collegiate group. Dr. Smith spoke at the AAHPERD national convention and authored articles for numerous professional journals. She was a mentor and colleague to many. It is NJAHPERD’s pleasure to name this lecture in honor of Dr. Nettie L. Smith.

NJAHPERD wishes to thank Kean University for sponsoring the Opening Session. 15
